Full and Partial Shape Similarity Through Sparse Descriptor Reconstruction

Abstract:We introduce a novel approach to measuring similarity between two shapes based on sparse reconstruction of shape descriptors. The main feature of our approach is its applicability in situations where either of the two shapes may have moderate to significant portions of its data missing. Let the two shapes be A and B. Without loss of generality, we characterize A by learning a sparse dictionary from its local descriptors. The similarity between A and B is defined by the error incurred when reconstructing B’s descriptor set using the basis signals from A’s dictionary. Benefits of using sparse dictionary learning and reconstruction are twofold. First, sparse dictionary learning reduces data redundancy and facilitates similarity computations. More importantly, the reconstruction error is expected to be small as long as B is similar to A, regardless of whether the similarity is full or partial. Our proposed approach achieves significant improvements over previous works when retrieving non-rigid shapes with missing data, and it is also comparable to state-of-the-art methods on the retrieval of complete non-rigid shapes.

Abstract:This paper introduces a simple yet effective shape analysis mechanism for geometry processing. Unlike traditional shape analysis techniques which compute descriptors per surface point up to certain neighborhoods, we introduce a shape analysis framework in which the descriptors are based on pairs of surface points. Such a pairwise analysis approach leads to a new class of shape descriptors that are more global, discriminative, and can effectively capture the variations in the underlying geometry. Specifically, we introduce new shape descriptors based on the isocurves of harmonic functions whose global maximum and minimum occur at the point pair. We show that these shape descriptors can infer shape structures and consistently lead to simpler and more efficient algorithms than the state-of-the-art methods for three applications: intrinsic reflectional symmetry axis computation, matching shape extremities, and simultaneous surface segmentation and skeletonization.

Abstract:Shape dissimilarity is a fundamental problem with many applications such as shape exploration, retrieval, and classification. Given a collection of shapes, existing methods develop a consistent global metric to compare and organize shapes. The global nature of the involved shape descriptors implies that overall shape appearance is compared. These methods work well to distinguish shapes from different categories, but often fail for fine-grained classes within the same category. In this paper, we develop a dissimilarity metric for fine-grained classes by fusing together multiple distinctive metrics for different classes. The fused metric measures the dissimilarities among inter-class shapes by observing their unique traits. We demonstrate the advantage of using our approach in several applications.

Abstract:Recently, there are remarkable progress in similarity computing for 3D geometric models. Few focus is put on the research of the similarity between volumetric models. This paper proposes a novel approach for performing similarity computation between two volumetric data sets. For each data set, it is performed by four stages. First, the volume data set is resampled into a unified resolution. Second, the data set is band-pass filtered and quantized to reveal its physical attributes. The resulting voxels are then normalized into a canonical coordinate system concerning the center of mass and scale. Subsequently, a series of uniformly spaced concentric shells around the center of mass are constructed, based on which spherical harmonics analysis (SHA) is applied. The coefficients of SHA constitute a rotation invariant spectrum descriptor which are used to measure the similarity between two data sets. The algorithm has been performed on a set of clinical CT and MRI data sets and the preliminary results are fairly inspiring.

Abstract:The study of spatial geometric similarity plays a significant role in spatial data retrieval. Many researchers have examined spatial geometric similarity, which is useful for spatial analysis and data retrieval. However, the majority of them focused on objects of the same type. Methods to support the spatial geometric similarity computation for different types of objects are rare, a systematic theory index has not been developed yet, and there has not been a comprehensive computational model of spatial geometric similarity. In this study, we conducted an analysis of the spatial geometric similarity computation based on conformal geometric algebra (CGA), which has certain advantages in the quantitative computation of the measurement information of spatial objects and the qualitative judgment of the topological relations of spatial objects. First, we developed a unified expression model for spatial geometric scenes, integrating shapes of objects and spatial relations between them. Then, we established a model for the spatial geometric similarity computation under various geographical circumstances to provide a novel approach for spatial geometric similarity research. Finally, the computation model was verified through a case study. The study of spatial geometric similarity sheds light on spatial data retrieval, which has scientific significance and practical value.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the problem of similarity assessment of isometric 3D shapes, which is of great relevance in improving the effectiveness of retrieval tasks. We first present an effective shape representation technique by proposing a partial aggregation model based on the bag-of-words paradigm. This technique can effectively encode our multiscale local features and has a good discriminatory ability. We then develop a parameter-free distance mapping approach to re-evaluate the similarity results based on intrinsic analysis of a well organized reciprocal k-nearest neighborhood graph. Different from the existing methods which determine k manually and globally, the proposed method can automatically adjust k to a reliable local domain, which therefore ensures a more accurate similarity measurement. We fully study our shape representation technique and evaluate the performance of the proposed distance mapping approach on several popular public shape benchmarks. Experiment results have demonstrated the state-of-the-art performance of our approach. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Allrightsreserved.
Assessing the similarity of real matrices with arbitrary shape

Abstract:Assessing the similarity of matrices is valuable for analyzing the extent to which data sets exhibit common features in tasks such as data clustering, dimensionality reduction, pattern recognition, group comparison, and graph analysis. Methods proposed for comparing vectors, such as cosine similarity, can be readily generalized to matrices. However, this approach usually neglects the inherent two-dimensional structure of matrices. Here, we propose singular angle similarity (SAS), a measure for evaluating the structural similarity between two arbitrary, real matrices of the same shape based on singular value decomposition. After introducing the measure, we compare SAS with standard measures for matrix comparison and show that only SAS captures the two-dimensional structure of matrices. Further, we characterize the behavior of SAS in the presence of noise and as a function of matrix dimensionality. Finally, we apply SAS to two use cases: square non-symmetric matrices of probabilistic network connectivity, and non-square matrices representing neural brain activity. For synthetic data of network connectivity, SAS matches intuitive expectations and allows for a robust assessment of similarities and differences. For experimental data of brain activity, SAS captures differences in the structure of high-dimensional responses to different stimuli. We conclude that SAS is a suitable measure for quantifying the shared structure of matrices with arbitrary shape.

A New Approach for Examining the Similarity of Protein 3D Shape

Abstract:A novel technique for estimating the potential similarity of protein 3D shape is proposed. It is found that the structures of proteins are of self-similarity, such a phenomenon can be well described by their fractal dimensions. We then adopt the size and the volume fractal dimensionality of proteins to characterize the spatial complexity of the protein shape. Such quantitative measurement is helpful to reduce the search space when we retrieve protein structures from large data sets. Experimental results demonstrate the potential of our proposed approach. Abstract:This paper proposes a new shape signature based on D2 shape distribution for 3D shape similarity assessment and search. An efficient implementation of this signature on 3D binary image is discussed. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a good retrieval performance with short computation time.

Abstract:Building data play a crucial role in geographic information science, and building shape similarity can be used for spatial inquiry, cartographic generalization, map updating, data quality assessment, and other spatial data mining applications. However, conventional shape representation and measurement methods use geometric and statistical measures and may not effectively capture the subtle differences among building shapes. Geospatial artificial intelligence methods often overlook nuanced differences in building contours, posing a challenge when precise fine-grained measurements are required. Furthermore, they have low interpretability. This study proposes a graph edit distance-based method for measuring the similarity between building shapes. It uses geometrics characteristics to construct a graph, matches and associates similar regional features between two building contours, and defines edit costs based on geometric and positional differences that align with the Gestalt principle of visual similarity. It converts the optimal edit path problem to the maximum weighted cluster solution problem and utilizes a heuristic approach to achieve the exact optimal solution within a moderately suitable timeframe. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method identifies detailed differences between building contours, providing accurate similarity measurement with high interpretability.

Abstract:The study of 2D shapes and their similarities is a central problem in the field of vision. It arises in particular from the task of classifying and recognizing objects from their observed silhouette. Defining natural distances between 2D shapes creates a metric space of shapes, whose mathematical structure is inherently relevant to the classification task. One intriguing metric space comes from using conformal mappings of 2D shapes into each other, via the theory of Teichmüller spaces. In this space every simple closed curve in the plane (a “shape”) is represented by a ‘fingerprint’ which is a diffeomorphism of the unit circle to itself (a differentiable and invertible, periodic function). More precisely, every shape defines to a unique equivalence class of such diffeomorphisms up to right multiplication by a Möbius map. The fingerprint does not change if the shape is varied by translations and scaling and any such equivalence class comes from some shape. This coset space, equipped with the infinitesimal Weil-Petersson (WP) Riemannian norm is a metric space. In this space, the shortest path between each two shapes is unique, and is given by a geodesic connecting them. Their distance from each other is given by integrating the WP-norm along that geodesic. In this paper we concentrate on solving the “welding” problem of “sewing” together conformally the interior and exterior of the unit circle, glued on the unit circle by a given diffeomorphism, to obtain the unique 2D shape associated with this diffeomorphism. This will allow us to go back and forth between 2D shapes and their representing diffeomorphisms in this “space of shapes”. We then present an efficient method for computing the unique shortest path, the geodesic of shape morphing between each two end-point shapes. The group of diffeomorphisms of S1 acts as a group of isometries on the space of shapes and we show how this can be used to define shape transformations, like for instance ‘adding a protruding limb’ to any shape.

Abstract:Similarity (dissimilarity) is of critical importance for data analysis, especially for clustering problem. The classical dissimilarity is related to distance (norm of the difference between each pair of data points), but it ignores the direction information from one data point to another. In this paper, we proposed a new dissimilarity based on direction consistence, which considers not only the distance information but also the direction information. It has some advantages and can be used in clustering to give a good performance. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Most of the existing algorithms for protein similarity comparison focus on the sequence comparison and structure comparison. However, the 3D structure of a protein is determined by the force field generated by all of its atoms in essence. Thus the similarity of force field implies the similarity of 3D structure. Abstract:Figures used in statistics and other sciences play a vital role in understanding and analyzing the problems under study. Due to the complexity and diversity of these problems, figures such as cartograms, choropleth maps, or radar charts take various geometric forms. Their visual evaluation from the view of geometric similarity is essential but insufficient. This paper proposes and theoretically justifies new metrics based on graph theory. They make it possible to quickly determine the degree of similarity of the statistical figures used in the research procedure. The new metrics were used to 1. Determine the similarity of the domestic route networks of major U.S. airlines, 2. Determine the similarity of the distribution of votes cast in U.S. presidential election in each state in 2016 and 2020, 3. Compare radar charts of some countries, constructed based on the Global Competitiveness Index, 4. Analyze the similarity of neutrosophic double line graphs representing sets of approximate (neutrosophic) numbers. This improves analytical capabilities concerning various processes mapped with well-known types of statistical charts, such as choropleth maps, radar charts, etc.

Abstract:Object data analysis is concerned with statistical methodology for datasets whose elements reside in an arbitrary, unspecified metric space. In this work we propose the object shape, a novel measure of shape/symmetry for object data. The object shape is easy to compute and interpret, owing to its intuitive interpretation as interpolation between two extreme forms of symmetry. As one major part of this work, we apply object shape in various metric spaces and show that it manages to unify several pre-existing, classical forms of symmetry. We also propose a new visualization tool called the peeling plot, which allows using the object shape for outlier detection and principal component analysis of object data.

Abstract:The initial effort to develop a systematic approach for estimating partial similarity measure of 2D boundary curve is proposed. First the curves are segmented and a high-level structure, feature', is introduced to organize the segments into meaningful regions. Then a two-step similarity assessment approach is devised. The first step is structure similar comparison based on the structure description function (SDF), and the second step is to exactly calculate the degree of similarity. One of important characteristics of the proposed approach is that it can implement the partial similarity estimation, not just for the whole object. In addition it can easily point out which parts of two objects are similar and how similar they are, which is very useful for mechanical activity such as creative design, process , etc.
3D Model Retrieval Based on 2D Slice Similarity Measurements

Abstract:We present an approach based on 2D slices for measuring similarity between 3D models. The key idea is to represent the 3D model by a series of slices along certain directions so that the shape-matching problem between 3D models is transformed into similarity measuring between 2D slices. Here, we have to deal with the following problems: selection of cutting directions, cutting methods, and similarity measuring. To solve these problems, some strategies and rules are proposed. Firstly, a maximum normal distribution method is presented to get three ortho-axes that coincide better with human visual perception mechanism. Secondly, a cutting method is given which can be used to get a series of slices composed of a set of closed polygons. Thirdly, on the basis of 3D shape distribution method presented by Robert et al., we develop a 2D shape distribution method to measure the similarity between the 2D slices. Some experiments are given in this paper to show the validity of this method for 3D model retrieval.

Abstract:Shape space is an active research field in computer vision study. The shape distance defined in a shape space may provide a simple and refined index to represent a unique shape. Wasserstein distance defines a Riemannian metric for the Wasserstein space. It intrinsically measures the similarities between shapes and is robust to image noise. Thus it has the potential for the 3D shape indexing and classification research. While the algorithms for computing Wasserstein distance have been extensively studied, most of them only work for genus-0 surfaces. This paper proposes a novel framework to compute Wasserstein distance between general topological surfaces with hyperbolic metric. The computational algorithms are based on Ricci flow, hyperbolic harmonic map, and hyperbolic power Voronoi diagram and the method is general and robust. We apply our method to study human facial expression, longitudinal brain cortical morphometry with normal aging, and cortical shape classification in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Experimental results demonstrate that our method may be used as an effective shape index, which outperforms some other standard shape measures in our AD versus healthy control classification study.

Abstract:Traditional machine learning (ML) algorithms, such as multiple regression, require human analysts to make decisions on how to treat the data. These decisions can make the model building process subjective and difficult to replicate for those who did not build the model. Deep learning approaches benefit by allowing the model to learn what features are important once the human analyst builds the architecture. Thus, a method for automating certain human decisions for traditional ML modeling would help to improve the reproducibility and remove subjective aspects of the model building process. To that end, we propose to use shape metrics to describe 2D data to help make analyses more explainable and interpretable. The proposed approach provides a foundation to help automate various aspects of model building in an interpretable and explainable fashion. This is particularly important in applications in the medical community where the `right to explainability' is crucial. We provide various simulated data sets ranging from probability distributions, functions, and model quality control checks (such as QQ-Plots and residual analyses from ordinary least squares) to showcase the breadth of this approach.
