Abstract:We characterise the category of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and linear contractions using simple category-theoretic axioms that do not refer to norms, continuity, dimension, or real numbers. Our proof directly relates limits in category theory to limits in analysis, using a new variant of the classical characterisation of the real numbers instead of Solèr's theorem.

Abstract:The categories of real and of complex Hilbert spaces with bounded linear maps have received purely categorical characterisations by Chris Heunen and Andre Kornell. These characterisations are achieved through Solèr's theorem, a result which shows that certain orthomodularity conditions on a Hermitian space over an involutive division ring result in a Hilbert space with the division ring being either the reals, complexes or quaternions. The characterisation by Heunen and Kornell makes use of a monoidal structure, which in turn excludes the category of quaternionic Hilbert spaces. We provide an alternative characterisation without the assumption of monoidal structure on the category. This new approach not only gives a new characterisation of the categories of real and of complex Hilbert spaces, but also the category of quaternionic Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:We axiomatically define (pre-)Hilbert categories. The axioms resemble those for monoidal Abelian categories with the addition of an involutive functor. We then prove embedding theorems: any locally small pre-Hilbert category whose monoidal unit is a simple generator embeds (weakly) monoidally into the category of pre-Hilbert spaces and adjointable maps, preserving adjoint morphisms and all finite (co)limits. An intermediate result that is important in its own right is that the scalars in such a category necessarily form an involutive field. In case of a Hilbert category, the embedding extends to the category of Hilbert spaces and continuous linear maps. The axioms for (pre-)Hilbert categories are weaker than the axioms found in other approaches to axiomatizing 2-Hilbert spaces. Neither enrichment nor a complex base field is presupposed. A comparison to other approaches will be made in the introduction.

Abstract:We show that the category OS of operator spaces, with complete contractions as morphisms, is locally countably presentable. This result, together with its symmetric monoidal closed structure with respect to the projective tensor product of operator spaces, implies the existence of cofree (cocommutative) coalgebras with respect to the projective tensor product and therefore provides a mathematical model of Intuitionistic Linear Logic in the sense of Lafont.

R*-categories: The Hilbert-space analogue of abelian categories

Abstract:This article introduces R*-categories: an abstraction of categories exhibiting the "algebraic" aspects of the theory of Hilbert spaces. Notably, finite biproducts in R*-categories can be orthogonalised using the Gram-Schmidt process, and generalised notions of positivity and contraction support a variant of Sz.-Nagy's unitary dilation theorem. Underpinning these generalisations is the structure of an involutive identity-on-objects contravariant endofunctor, which encodes adjoints of morphisms. The R*-category axioms are otherwise inspired by those for abelian categories, comprising a few simple properties of products and kernels. Additivity is not assumed, but nevertheless follows. In fact, the similarity with abelian categories runs deeper: R*-categories are quasi-abelian and thus homological. Examples include the categories of finite-dimensional inner product modules over a partially ordered division ring, and the categories of self-dual Hilbert modules over a W*-algebra.

On some new metric characterisations of Hilbert spaces

Abstract:In the literature surrounding the theory of Banach spaces, considerable effort has been invested in exploring the conditions on a Banach space X that characterise X as being an inner product space or as a linearly isomorphic copy of a Hilbert space. On the other hand, a different theory emerges when the class of Banach spaces is looked upon as a Lipschitz category where Lipschitz maps are used as morphisms in the new category in place of the familiar bounded linear maps in the linear theory. This paper provides a short survey of recent results involving the appropriate Lipschitz analogues of certain well known results from the linear theory characterizing Hilbert spaces. Whereas isometric description of Hilbert spaces has all along been a popular theme in this line of investigations, we shall concentrate mainly on isomorphic characterisations which entail the existence of an equivalent norm on the underlying space arising from an inner product.

Abstract:This article examines Hilbert spaces constructed from sets whose existence is incompatible with the Countable Axiom of Choice (CC). Our point of view is twofold: (1) We examine what can and cannot be said about Hilbert spaces and operators on them in ZF set theory without any assumptions of Choice axioms, even the CC. (2) We view Hilbert spaces as ``quantized'' sets and obtain some set-theoretic results from associated Hilbert spaces.

Typical properties of positive contractions and the invariant subspace problem

Abstract:In this paper, we first study some elementary properties of a typical positive contraction on $\ell_q$ for the Strong Operator Topology and the Strong* Operator Topology. Using these properties we prove that a typical positive contraction on $\ell_1$ (resp. on $\ell_2$) has a non-trivial invariant subspace for the Strong Operator Topology (resp. for the Strong Operator Topology and the Strong* Operator Topology). We then focus on the case where $X$ is a Banach space with a basis. We prove that a typical positive contraction on a Banach space with an unconditional basis has no non-trivial closed invariant ideals for the Strong Operator Topology and the Strong* Operator Topology. In particular this shows that when $X = \ell_q$ with $1 \leq q < \infty$, a typical positive contraction $T$ on $X$ for the Strong Operator Topology (resp. for the Strong* Operator Topology when $1 < q < \infty$) does not satisfy the Abramovich, Aliprantis and Burkinshaw criterion, that is there is no non-zero positive operator in the commutant of $T$ which is quasinilpotent at a non-zero positive vector of $X$. Finally we prove that, for the Strong* Operator Topology, a typical positive contraction on a reflexive Banach space with a monotone basis does not satisfy the Abramovich, Aliprantis and Burkinshaw criterion.

Abstract:In his monograph on Infinite Abelian Groups, I. Kaplansky raised three "test problems" concerning their structure and multiplicity. As noted by Azoff, these problems make sense for any category admitting a direct sum operation. Here, we are interested in the operator theoretic version of Kaplansky's second problem which asks: if A and B are operators on an infinite-dimensional, separable Hilbert space and is equivalent to in some (precise) sense, is A equivalent to B ? We examine this problem under a strengthening of the hypothesis, where a "primitive" square root of is assumed to be equivalent to the corresponding square root of . When "equivalence" refers to similarity of operators and A is a compact operator, we deduce from this stronger hypothesis that A and B are similar. We exhibit a counterexample (due to J. Bell) of this phenomenon in the setting of unital rings. Also, we exhibit an uncountable family of unitary operators, no two of which are unitarily equivalent, such that each is unitarily equivalent to , a "primitive" root of .

A dilation theoretic approach to Banach spaces

Abstract:For a complex Banach space $\mathbb X$, we prove that $\mathbb X$ is a Hilbert space if and only if every strict contraction $T$ on $\mathbb X$ dilates to an isometry if and only if for every strict contraction $T$ on $\mathbb X$ the function $A_T: \mathbb X \rightarrow [0, \infty]$ defined by $A_T(x)=(\|x\|^2 -\|Tx\|^2)^{\frac{1}{2}}$ gives a norm on $\mathbb X$. We also find several other necessary and sufficient conditions in this thread such that a Banach sapce becomes a Hilbert space. We construct examples of strict contractions on non-Hilbert Banach spaces that do not dilate to isometries. Then we characterize all strict contractions on a non-Hilbert Banach space that dilate to isometries and find explicit isometric dilation for them. We prove several other results including characterizations of complemented subspaces in a Banach space, extension of a Wold isometry to a Banach space unitary and describing norm attainment sets of Banach space operators in terms of dilations.

Abstract:Higher idempotent completion gives a formal inductive construction of the $n$-category of finite dimensional $n$-vector spaces starting with the complex numbers. We propose a manifestly unitary construction of low dimensional higher Hilbert spaces, formally constructing the $\mathrm{C}^*$-3-category of 3-Hilbert spaces from Baez's 2-Hilbert spaces, which itself forms a 3-Hilbert space. We prove that the forgetful functor from 3-Hilbert spaces to 3-vector spaces is fully faithful.

Abstract:We generalize the concept of a norm on a vector space to one of a norm on a category. This provides a unified perspective on many specific matters in many different areas of mathematics like set theory, functional analysis, measure theory, topology, and metric space theory. We will especially address the two last areas in which the monotone-light factorization and, respectively, the Gromov-Hausdorff distance will naturally appear. In our formalization a Schröder-Bernstein property becomes an axiom of a norm which constitutes interesting properties of the categories in question. The proposed concept provides a convenient framework for metrizations.

Philosophy of contraherent cosheaves

Abstract:Contraherent cosheaves are module objects over algebraic varieties defined by gluing using the colocalization functors. Contraherent cosheaves are designed to be used for globalizing contramodules and contraderived categories for the purposes of Koszul duality and semi-infinite algebraic geometry. One major technical problem associated with contraherent cosheaves is that the colocalization functors, unlike the localizations, are not exact. The reason is that, given a commutative ring homomorphism $R\rightarrow S$ arising in connection with a typical covering in algebraic geometry, the ring $S$ is usually a flat, but not a projective $R$-module. We argue that the relevant difference between projective and flat modules, from the standpoint of homological algebra, is not that big, as manifested by the flat/projective and cotorsion periodicity theorems. The difference becomes even smaller if one observes that the ring $S$ is often a very flat $R$-module.

Abstract:B. Magajna and J. Schweizer showed in 1997 and 1999, respectively, that C*-algebras of compact operators can be characterized by the property that every norm-closed (and coinciding with its biorthogonal complement, resp.) submodule of every Hilbert C*-module over them is automatically an orthogonal summand. We find out further generic properties of the category of Hilbert C*-modules over C*-algebras which characterize precisely the C*-algebras of compact operators.

Abstract:We show that, given a closed subset E of the unit circle of Lebesgue measure zero, there exists a positive sequence u n → ∞ with the following property: if T is a Hilbert-space contraction such that σ ( T ) ⊂ E and ‖ T − n ‖ = O ( u n ) and rank ( I − T ⁎ T ) < ∞ , then T is a unitary operator. Abstract:We introduce a sheaf theoretic viewpoint on functional analysis designed for infinite dimensional Lie group actions. We develop functional calculus for Banach valued functors and, in particular, prove the existence of an exponential map for a certain class of operators that generalise first order partial differential operators. This algebraic framework can be used in dynamical systems and KAM theory to provide normal forms and versal deformations. it is used in our papers on the subject such as the Herman conjecture paper, the versal deformation theorem for vector fields etc.

Abstract:In his work on the foundations of geometry, Hilbert observed that a formula which appeared in works by Beltrami, Cayley, and Klein, gives rise to a complete metric on any bounded convex domain. Some decades later, Garrett Birkhoff and Hans Samelson noted that this metric has interesting applications, when considering certain maps of convex cones that contract the metric. Such situations have since arisen in many contexts, pure and applied, and could be called nonlinear Perron-Frobenius theory. This note centers around one dynamical aspect of this theory.
