Abstract:A search for a new heavy scalar or pseudo-scalar Higgs boson ($H/A$) produced in association with a pair of top quarks, with the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of top quarks ($H/A\rightarrow t\bar{t}$) is reported. The search targets a final state with exactly two leptons with same-sign electric charges or at least three leptons. The analysed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Two multivariate classifiers are used to separate the signal from the background. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model. The observed (expected) upper limits at 95% confidence level on the $t\bar{t}H/A$ production cross-section times the branching ratio of $H/A\rightarrow t\bar{t}$ range between 14 (10) fb and 6 (5) fb for a heavy Higgs boson with mass between 400 GeV and 1000 GeV, respectively. Assuming that only one particle, either the scalar $H$ or the pseudo-scalar $A$, contributes to the $t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ final state, values of $\tan\beta$ below 1.2 or 0.5 are excluded for a mass of 400 GeV or 1000 GeV, respectively. These exclusion ranges increase to $\tan\beta$ below 1.6 or 0.6 when both particles are considered.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to search for a new heavy scalar or pseudoscalar Higgs boson ($H/A$) in proton - proton collisions. This boson is produced together with a pair of top quarks and decays into a pair of top quarks ($H/A \rightarrow t\bar{t}$). Specifically, the research objective is to search for this process in multi - lepton final states, that is, the final state contains two leptons with the same charge sign or at least three leptons. This study uses the data collected by the ATLAS detector at a center - of - mass energy of 13 TeV, with the corresponding integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. ### Main Objectives 1. **Search for New Heavy Higgs Bosons**: The paper aims to search for heavy scalar or pseudoscalar Higgs bosons ($H/A$) produced together with a pair of top quarks by analyzing multi - lepton final - state events. 2. **Verify the Standard Model**: Through the analysis of these events, verify the predictions of the standard model and explore new physical phenomena beyond the standard model. 3. **Exclude Parameter Space**: In the context of the type - II two - Higgs - doublet model (type - II 2HDM), limit the mass and tanβ parameters of the Higgs boson and exclude certain parameter spaces. ### Research Methods - **Data Set**: Use 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton - proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at a center - of - mass energy of 13 TeV. - **Event Selection**: Select events where the final state contains two leptons with the same charge sign or at least three leptons. - **Background Estimation**: Estimate the contribution of the standard model background by means of simulation samples and control regions. - **Signal Separation**: Use two multivariate classifiers (BDTs) to distinguish between signals and backgrounds. The first classifier (SM BDT) is used to distinguish standard model four - top - quark events from other backgrounds, and the second classifier (BSM pBDT) is used to further distinguish signals from all backgrounds. ### Results - **No Significant Excess Found**: No events significantly exceeding the standard model expectations were observed in the analyzed data. - **Upper Limit of Confidence Level**: The upper limit of the $t\bar{t}H/A$ production cross - section multiplied by the branching ratio $H/A \rightarrow t\bar{t}$ at the 95% confidence level is given. For heavy Higgs bosons in the mass range from 400 GeV to 1000 GeV, the observed (expected) upper limits are 14 (10) fb and 6 (5) fb respectively. - **Exclusion Range**: In the case where only the scalar $H$ or the pseudoscalar $A$ is assumed to contribute to the $t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ final state, tanβ values below 1.2 and 0.5 at masses of 400 GeV and 1000 GeV are excluded respectively. When both particles are considered simultaneously, the exclusion range increases to tanβ below 1.6 and 0.6. Through these results, the research provides important experimental constraints for heavy Higgs bosons in the type - II two - Higgs - doublet model.
