Abstract:The linearisation of a second-order formulation of the conformal Einstein field equations (CEFEs) in Generalised Harmonic Gauge (GHG), with trace-free matter is derived. The linearised equations are obtained for a general background and then particularised for the study linear perturbations around a flat background -- the inversion (conformal) representation of the Minkowski spacetime -- and the solutions discussed. We show that the generalised Lorenz gauge (defined as the linear analogue of the GHG-gauge) propagates. Moreover, the equation for the conformal factor can be trivialised with an appropriate choice for the gauge source functions; this permits a scri-fixing strategy using gauge source functions for the linearised wave-like CEFE-GHG, which can in principle be generalised to the nonlinear case. As a particular application of the linearised equations, the far-field and compact source approximation is employed to derive quadrupole-like formulae for various conformal fields such as the perturbation of the rescaled Weyl tensor.

Abstract:A modification of the Einstein-Hilbert theory, the Covariant Canonical Gauge Gravity (CCGG), leads to a cosmological constant that represents the energy of the space-time continuum when deformed from its (A)dS ground state to a flat geometry. CCGG is based on the canonical transformation theory in the De Donder-Weyl (DW) Hamiltonian formulation. That framework modifies the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian of the free gravitational field by a quadratic Riemann-Cartan concomitant. The theory predicts a total energy-momentum of the system of space-time and matter to vanish, in line with the conjecture of a "Zero-Energy-Universe" going back to Lorentz (1916) and Levi-Civita (1917). Consequently a flat geometry can only exist in presence of matter where the bulk vacuum energy of matter, regardless of its value, is eliminated by the vacuum energy of space-time.% $\lambda_0$. The observed cosmological constant $\Lambda_{\mathrm{obs}}$ is found to be merely a small correction %of the order $10^{-120} \,\lambda_0$ attributable to deviations from a flat geometry and effects of complex dynamical geometry of space-time, namely torsion and possibly also vacuum fluctuations of matter and space-time. That quadratic extension of General Relativity, anticipated already in 1918 by Einstein \cite{einstein18}, thus provides a significant and natural contribution to resolving the %$120$ orders of magnitude miss-estimate called the "cosmological constant problem".

Abstract:We investigate the properties of a fairly large class of boundary conditions for the linearised Einstein equations in the Riemannian setting, ones which generalise the linearised counterpart of boundary conditions proposed by Anderson. Through the prism of the quest to quantise gravitational waves in curved spacetimes, we study their properties from the point of view of ellipticity, gauge invariance, and the existence of a spectral gap.

Abstract:The covariant canonical transformation theory applied to the relativistic Hamiltonian theory of classical matter fields in dynamical space-time yields a novel (first order) gauge field theory of gravitation. The emerging field equations necessarily embrace a quadratic Riemann term added to Einstein's linear equation. The quadratic term endows space-time with inertia generating a dynamic response of the space-time geometry to deformations relative to (Anti) de Sitter geometry. A "deformation parameter" is identified, the inverse dimensionless coupling constant governing the relative strength of the quadratic invariant in the Hamiltonian, and directly observable via the deceleration parameter $q_0$. The quadratic invariant makes the system inconsistent with Einstein's constant cosmological term, $\Lambda = \mathrm{const}$. In the Friedman model this inconsistency is resolved with the scaling ansatz of a "cosmological function", $\Lambda(a)$, where $a$ is the scale parameter of the FLRW metric. %Moreover, the strain generated by the quadratic term turns out to act as a geometrical stress. The cosmological function can be normalized such that with the $\Lambda$ CDM parameter set the present-day observables, the Hubble constant and the deceleration parameter, can be reproduced. %We analyze the asymptotics of the such normalized Friedman equations with respect to both, the fundamental parameters (coupling constants) and the scale $a$. With this parameter set we recover the dark energy scenario in the late epoch. The proof that inflation in the early phase is caused by the "geometrical fluid" representing the inertia of space-time is yet pending, though.

Abstract:To numerically evolve the full Einstein equations (or modifications thereof), simulations of cosmological spacetimes must rely on a particular formulation of the field equations combined with a specific gauge/frame choice. Yet truly physical results cannot depend on the given formulation or gauge/frame choice. In this paper, we present a resolution of the gauge problem and, as an example, numerically implement it to evaluate our previous work on contracting spacetimes.

Abstract:We quantized the full Einstein equations in a globally hyperbolic spacetime $N=N^{n+1}$, $n\ge 3$, and found solutions of the resulting hyperbolic equation in a fiber bundle $E$ which can be expressed as a product of spatial eigenfunctions (eigendistributions) and temporal eigenfunctions. The spatial eigenfunctions form a basis in an appropriate Hilbert space while the temporal eigenfunctions are solutions to a second order ordinary differential equation in $\mathbb{R}_+$. In case $n\ge 17$ and provided the cosmological constant $\Lambda$ is negative the temporal eigenfunctions are eigenfunctions of a self-adjoint operator $\hat H_0$ such that the eigenvalues are countable and the eigenfunctions form an orthonormal basis of a Hilbert space.

Gauging the scale invariance of Einstein equations: Weyl invariant equations for gravity

Abstract:We derive a Weyl invariant equation for Gravity by gauging the global Weyl invariance of vacuum Einstein equations. The equation is linear in the curvature and a natural generalization of Einstein equations to Weyl geometry. The system has 5 physical polarizations, two tensor modes, two vectors modes and one scalar, associated to the cosmological constant. An exact black hole solution is found. We study the dynamics on Friedman backgrounds and the evolution of cosmological perturbations. It is shown that cosmological vector modes do not decay in this model.

Abstract:We develop a model of spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic cosmology in Lorentzian Regge calculus, employing 4-dimensional Lorentzian frusta as building blocks. By examining the causal structure of the discrete spacetimes obtained by gluing such 4-frusta in spatial and temporal direction, we find causality violations if the sub-cells connecting spatial slices are spacelike. A Wick rotation to the Euclidean theory can be defined globally by a complexification of the variables and an analytic continuation of the action. Introducing a discrete free massless scalar field, we study its equations of motion and show that it evolves monotonically. Furthermore, in a continuum limit, we obtain the equations of a homogeneous scalar field on a spatially flat Friedmann background. Vacuum solutions to the causally regular Regge equations are static and flat and show a restoration of time reparametrisation invariance. In the presence of a scalar field, the height of a frustum is a dynamical variable that has a solution if causality violations are absent and if an inequality relating geometric and matter boundary data is satisfied. Edge lengths of cubes evolve monotonically, yielding a contracting or an expanding branch of the universe. In a small deficit angle expansion, the system can be deparametrised via the scalar field and a continuum limit of the discrete theory can be defined which we show to yield the relational Friedmann equation. These properties are obstructed if higher orders of the deficit angle are taken into account. Our results suggest that the inclusion of timelike sub-cells is necessary for a causally regular classical evolution in this symmetry restricted setting. Ultimately, this works serves as a basis for forthcoming investigations on the cosmological path integral within the framework of effective spin foams.

Abstract:We reconsider linear perturbations around general Friedmann - Lemaitre - Robertson - Walker (FLRW) cosmological backgrounds. Exploiting gauge freedom involving only time reparametrizations, we write down classical background solutions analytically, for an arbitrary number of fluid components. We then show that the time evolution of scalar and tensor adiabatic perturbations are governed by Schrödinger-like differential equations of generalized Heun type. After recovering known analytic results for a single-component fluid, we discuss more general situations with two and three different fluid components, with special attention to the combination of radiation, matter and vacuum energy, which is supposed to describe the $\Lambda$CDM model. The evolution of linear perturbations of a flat $\Lambda$CDM universe is described by a two-transient model, where the transitions from radiation to matter and matter to vacuum energy are governed by a Heun equation and a Hypergeometric equation, respectively. We discuss an analytic approach to the study of the general case, involving generalized Heun equations, that makes use of (quantum) Seiberg-Witten curves for ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories and has proven to be very effective in the analysis of Black-Hole, fuzzball and ECO perturbations.

Abstract:This study investigates the possibility of a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological solution within the context of the Maxwell-Weyl gauge theory of gravity. To achieve this, we utilize the Einstein-Yang-Mills theory as an analogy and represent the Maxwell gauge field in terms of two time-dependent scalar fields. We derive the modified Friedmann equations, integrating the contributions from the Maxwell gauge fields and an effective cosmological constant that depends on the Dirac scalar field. Our analysis reveals how these modifications influence various cosmological scenarios, including power-law evolution, de Sitter-like expansion, inflationary phases, non-singular bounce cosmologies, and cyclic cosmologies.

Abstract:We introduce the generalized Lorentz gauge condition in the theory of quantum electrodynamics into the general vector-tensor theories of gravity. Then we explore the cosmic evolution and the static, spherically symmetric solution of the four dimensional vector field with the generalized Lorenz gauge. We find that, if the vector field is minimally coupled to the gravitation, it behaves as the cosmological constant. On the other hand, if it is nonminimally coupled to the gravitation, the vector field could behave as vast matters in the background of spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe. But it may be not the case. The weak, strong and dominant energy conditions, the stability analysis of classical and quantum aspects would put constraints on the parameters and so the equation of state of matters would be greatly constrained.

Abstract:On vacuum spacetimes of general dimension, we study the linearized Einstein vacuum equations with a spatially compactly supported and (necessarily) divergence-free source. We prove that the vanishing of appropriate charges of the source, defined in terms of Killing vector fields on the spacetime, is necessary and sufficient for solvability within the class of spatially compactly supported metric perturbations. The proof combines classical results by Moncrief with the solvability theory of the linearized constraint equations with control on supports developed by Corvino and Chruściel-Delay.

Abstract:The cosmological implications of the Covariant Canonical Gauge Theory of Gravity (CCGG) are investigated. CCGG is a Palatini theory derived from first principles using the canonical transformation formalism in the covariant Hamiltonian formulation. The Einstein-Hilbert theory is thereby extended by a quadratic Riemann-Cartan term in the Lagrangian. Moreover, the requirement of covariant conservation of the stress-energy tensor leads to necessary presence of torsion. In the Friedman universe that promotes the cosmological constant to a time-dependent function, and gives rise to a geometrical correction with the EOS of dark radiation. The resulting cosmology, compatible with the $\Lambda$CDM parameter set, encompasses bounce and bang scenarios with graceful exits into the late dark energy era. Testing those scenarios against low-z observations shows that CCGG is a viable theory.

Abstract:Motivated by the quantization of linearized gravity, we consider gauge-fixed linearized Einstein equations and their Wick rotation near a Cauchy surface. We show that Calderón projectors for the Wick-rotated equations induce Hadamard bi-solutions on the Lorentzian level. On the other hand, we find smoothing obstructions to gauge-invariance and positivity conditions needed in quantization. These obstructions are primarily due to boundary terms arising in the Wick-rotated theory and depend on the boundary conditions.

Abstract:This article provides a discussion on the construction of conformal Gaussian gauge systems to study the evolution of solutions to the Einstein field equations with positive Cosmological constant. This is done by means of a gauge based on the properties of conformal geodesics. The use of this gauge, combined with the extended conformal Einstein field equations, yields evolution equations in the form of a symmetric hyperbolic system for which standard Cauchy stability results can be employed. This strategy is used to study the global properties of de Sitter-like spacetimes with constant negative scalar curvature. It is then adapted to study the evolution of the Schwarzschild–de Sitter spacetime in the static region near the conformal boundary. This review is based on Minucci et al . 2021 Class. Cosmological constant as an integration constant

Abstract:The discrepancy between the observed value of the cosmological constant (CC) and its expected value from quantum field theoretical considerations motivates the search for a theory in which the CC is decoupled from the vacuum energy. In this article, we consider theories in which the CC is regarded as an integration constant. These theories include trace-free Einstein gravity, theories constructed from the Codazzi equation (which includes Cotton gravity and a gauge-gravity inspired theory), and conformal Killing gravity. We remark on a recent debate regarding the viability of Cotton gravity and find that while the Codazzi equation is indeed underdetermined, the solutions of the Codazzi equation trivialize to $\lambda g_{ab}$ on generic backgrounds, and that in principle, one can close the system with the divergence-free condition and an appropriate choice of initial data. We also propose a full variational principle (full in the sense that variations in all variables are considered) for each of the aforementioned theories that can incorporate the matter sector; in this manner, we can obtain the trace-free Einstein equations without a unimodular constraint.

Nonsingular solutions to the Einstein equations on piecewise-Lorentzian manifolds

Abstract:We consider 4-dimensional spacetime manifolds that are piecewise Lorentzian, where the Lorentzian components of the manifold are separated by codimension-one planes (spacelike or timelike) on which the metric is degenerate. Such manifolds are of interest because they enlarge the smooth and nonsingular solution space of the Einstein equations. Planes of degeneracy that are perpendicular to each other can exist simultaneously. We describe various solutions of this type to the vacuum equations $G_{\mu\nu}=0$ and $G_{\mu\nu}+\Lambda g_{\mu\nu}=0$, and to $G_{\mu\nu}= 8\pi G T_{\mu\nu}$ for a perfect fluid. Novel examples include static gravitational lumps of finite curvature and a spacetime that responds to a cosmological constant via oscillations in time and/or space. A spacelike degeneracy plane can be used to avoid the big bang singularity, as we have further described elsewhere.
