Abstract:This thesis investigates geometric descriptions of scattering amplitudes, with a specific focus on scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM and ABJM theory. The recent development of the field of positive geometries provides us with a suitable framework for this endeavour. In particular, we will give a detailed account of the amplituhedron, the momentum amplituhedron, and the ABJM momentum amplituhedron. Alongside these geometries, we will also discuss the ABHY associahedron, which encapsulates tree-level scattering amplitudes in bi-adjoint scalar theory. We provide a detailed introduction to these positive geometries, which includes a comprehensive discussion of their structure. For the momentum amplituhedron, ABJM momentum amplituhedron, and ABHY associahedron we give a full stratification of their boundaries, which equivalently elucidates the singularity structure of the tree-level scattering amplitudes. Notably, we show that the ABJM momentum amplituhedron has an Euler characteristic equal to one. Furthermore, we explore the interconnections between these, and other, positive geometries. These connections are in part obtained via push forwards through the scattering equations. We develop techniques to calculate these push forwards which circumvents the necessity to solve the scattering equations explicitly. Beyond tree-level, we illustrate how positive geometries can be used to describe loop integrands in planar N=4 SYM and ABJM. A new framework is established to investigate these loop geometries in the space of dual momenta. The construction relies solely on lightcones and their intersections, and the framework simultaneously encompasses the loop level structure of the amplituhedron, momentum amplituhedron, and the ABJM momentum amplituhedron. This further leads to compact general formulae for all one-loop integrands in N=4 SYM and ABJM.

Four-point correlators in N=4 SYM from AdS$_5$ bubbling geometries

Abstract:Four-point correlation functions are observables of significant interest in holographic field theories. We compute an infinite family of four-point correlation functions of operators in short multiplets of 4D N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in the supergravity regime, by studying the quadratic fluctuations around non-trivial supergravity backgrounds. The supergravity backgrounds are supersymmetric smooth geometries in the family derived by Lin, Lunin and Maldacena. The light probes comprise an infinite sequence of Kaluza-Klein harmonics of the dilaton/axion. For generic parameter values, the supergravity backgrounds are dual to heavy CFT states. However we focus on the limit in which the dual CFT states become light single-particle states. The resulting all-light four-point correlators are related by superconformal Ward identities to previously known four-point correlators of half-BPS chiral primary operators. By verifying that the Ward identities are satisfied, we confirm the validity of the supergravity method.

Abstract:Arkani-Hamed, Bai, He, and Yan (ABHY) discovered a convex realisation of the associahedron whose combinatorial and geometric structure generates tree-level amplitudes in bi-adjoint scalar theory. In this paper, we identify S-matrix of Yang-Mills theory with a scalar obtained by contracting the canonical form of ABHY associahedron with a multi-vector field (MVF) in the kinematic space. Components of this MVF are determined by the combinatorial structures that underlie the associahedron and Corolla polynomial that was introduced by Kreimer, Sars, and van Suijlekom (KSVS) in [2]. KSVS used the Corolla polynomial to obtain (at all orders in the loop expansion) the parametric representation of gauge theory Feynman integral from the corresponding Feynman integral in $\phi^{3}$ theory. Using the full power of Corolla polynomial, we then extend these results to obtain Yang-Mills one loop planar integrand by contracting the Corolla generated MVF with the canonical form defined by $\hat{D}_{n}$ polytope discovered by Arkani-Hamed, Frost, Plamondon, Salvatori, Thomas. We also demonstrate that KSVS representation of Corolla graph differential in the parametric space can be readily extended to "spin up" the curve integral formulae for $\textrm{Tr}\phi^{3}$ amplitude discovered in [3,4] and give an explicit construction of such formulae for tree-level and planar one loop gluon amplitudes.

Abstract:We extend the recently discovered duality between MHV amplitudes and the light-cone limit of correlation functions of a particular type of local scalar operators to generic non-MHV amplitudes in planar N=4 SYM theory. We consider the natural generalization of the bosonic correlators to super-correlators of stress-tensor multiplets and show, in a number of examples, that their light-cone limit exactly reproduces the square of the matching super-amplitudes. We show that the correlation function computed at Born level is dual to the tree-level amplitude if all of its points form a light-like polygon. If a subset of points are not on the light-like polygon but are integrated over, they become Lagrangian insertions generating the loop corrections to the correlator. In this case the duality with amplitudes holds at the level of the integrand. We build up the superspace formalism needed to formulate the duality and present the explicit example of the n-point NMHV tree amplitude as the dual of the lowest nilpotent level in the correlator.

Abstract:We consider type IIB supergravity on a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quotient of AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ as the holographic dual of strongly coupled 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM on $\mathbb{RP}^4$ space with the gauging of charge conjugation. Using bootstrap techniques, we determine all two-point functions of $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS operators of arbitrary weights at the leading order in the large central charge expansion.

Superconformal Monodromy Defects in $\mathcal{N}$=4 SYM and LS theory

Abstract:We study type IIB supergravity solutions that are dual to two-dimensional superconformal defects in $d=4$ SCFTs which preserve $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry. We consider solutions dual to defects in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory that have non-trivial monodromy for $U(1)^3\subset SO(6)$ global symmetry and we also allow for the possibility of conical singularities. In addition, we consider the addition of fermionic and bosonic mass terms that have non trivial dependence on the spatial directions transverse to the defect, while preserving the superconformal symmetry of the defect. We compute various physical quantities including the central charges of the defect expressed as a function of the monodromy, the on-shell action as well as associated supersymmetric Renyi entropies. Analogous computations are carried out for superconformal defects in the $\mathcal{N}=1$, $d=4$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT. We also show that the defects of the two SCFTs are connected by a line of bulk marginal mass deformations and argue that they are also related by bulk RG flow.

Abstract:We study generalized global symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies in 3d N=4 superconformal field theories (SCFTs). Following some general considerations, we focus on good quiver gauge theories, comprised of balanced unitary nodes and unbalanced unitary and special unitary nodes. While the global form of the Higgs branch symmetry group may be determined from the UV Lagrangian, the global form of Coulomb branch symmetry groups and associated mixed 't Hooft anomalies are more subtle due to potential symmetry enhancement in the IR. We describe how Coulomb branch symmetry groups and their mixed 't Hooft anomalies can be deduced from the UV Lagrangian by studying center charges of various types of monopole operators, providing a concrete and unambiguous way to implement 't Hooft anomaly matching. The final expression for the symmetry group and 't Hooft anomalies has a concise form that can be easily read off from the quiver data, specifically from the positions of the unbalanced and flavor nodes with respect to the positions of the balanced nodes. We provide consistency checks by applying our method to compute symmetry groups of 3d N=4 theories corresponding to magnetic quivers of 4d Class S theories and 5d SCFTs. We are able to match these results against the flavor symmetry groups of the 4d and 5d theories computed using independent methods. Another strong consistency check is provided by comparing symmetry groups and anomalies of two theories related by 3d mirror symmetry.

Abstract:Correlators of Wilson loop operators with O_4=Tr(F_{\mu\nu}^2+...) are computed in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The results are compared with the leading order perturbative computations. As a consequence of conformal invariance, these correlators have identical forms in the weak and strong coupling limits for circular loops. They are essentially different for contours not protected by conformal symmetry.

Determinants in self-dual N=4 SYM and twistor space

Abstract:We consider correlation functions of supersymmetrized determinant operators in self-dual super Yang-Mills (SYM). These provide a generating function for correlators of arbitrary single-trace half-BPS operators, including, for appropriate Grassmann components, the so-called loop integrand of the non-self-dual theory. We introduce a novel twistor space representation for determinant operators which makes contact with the recently studied $m=2$ amplituhedron. By using matrix duality we rewrite the $n$-point determinant correlator as a $n\times n$ matrix integral where the gauge group rank $N_c$ is turned into a coupling. The correlators are rational functions whose denominators, in the planar limit, contain only ten-dimensional distances. Using this formulation, we verify a recent conjecture regarding the ten-dimensional symmetry of the components with maximal Grassmann degree and we obtain new formulas for correlators of Grassmann degree four.

Abstract:We consider the $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver gauge theory obtained by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM). By exploiting supersymmetric localization, we study the integrated correlator of two Coulomb branch and two moment map operators and the integrated correlator of four moment map operators, determining exact expressions valid for any value of the 't Hooft coupling in the planar limit. Additionally, for the second correlator, we obtain an exact expression also for the next-to-planar contribution. Then, we derive the leading terms of their strong-coupling expansions and outline the differences with respect to the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory.

Abstract:We study the two-point correlators of the currents of the E8 global symmetry in the N = (1, 0) superconformal six-dimensional theory as well as in the 4D superconformal theories upon toroidal compactification. From the high-energy behavior of the correlator we deduce that in 4D 10 copies of the superconformal theory with E8 global symmetry can be coupled to an N = 2 E8 gauge theory. We present three alternative derivations for the expression for the correlators. One from field theory, one from M-theory and one from F-theory.

Abstract:Integrated correlation functions in = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU( N ) can be expressed in terms of the localised S 4 partition function, Z N , deformed by a mass m . Two such cases are and , which are modular invariant functions of the complex coupling τ . While was recently written in terms of a two-dimensional lattice sum for any N and τ , has only been evaluated up to order 1/ N 3 in a large- N expansion in terms of modular invariant functions with no known lattice sum realisation. Here we develop methods for evaluating to any desired order in 1/ N and finite τ . We use this new data to constrain higher loop corrections to the stress tensor correlator, and give evidence for several intriguing relations between and to all orders in 1/ N . We also give evidence that the coefficients of the 1/ N expansion of can be written as lattice sums to all orders. Lastly, these large N and finite τ results are used to accurately estimate the integrated correlators at finite N and finite τ .

Exceptionally simple integrated correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

Abstract:Supersymmetric localisation has led to several modern developments in the study of integrated correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. In particular, exact results have been derived for certain integrated four-point functions of superconformal primary operators in the stress tensor multiplet valid for all classical gauge groups, $SU(N)$, $SO(N)$, and $USp(2N)$, and for all values of the complex coupling, $\tau=\theta/(2\pi)+4\pi i/g^2_{_{YM}}$. In this work we extend this analysis and provide a unified two-dimensional lattice sum representation for all simple gauge groups, in particular for the exceptional series $E_r$ (with $r=6,7,8$), $F_4$ and $G_2$. These expressions are manifestly covariant under Goddard-Nuyts-Olive duality which for $F_4$ and $G_2$ is given by particular Fuchsian groups. We show that the perturbation expansion of these integrated correlators is universal in the sense that it can be written as a single function of three parameters, called Vogel parameters, and a suitable 't Hooft-like coupling. To obtain the perturbative expansion for the integrated correlator with a given gauge group we simply need substituting in this universal expression specific values for the Vogel parameters. At the non-perturbative level we conjecture a formula for the one-instanton Nekrasov partition function with simple gauge group and general $\Omega$-deformation background. We check that our expression reduces in various limits to known results and that it produces, via supersymmetric localisation, the same one-instanton contribution to the integrated correlator as the one derived from the lattice sum. Finally, we consider the action of the hyperbolic Laplace operator in $\tau$ on the integrated correlators with exceptional gauge groups and derive inhomogeneous Laplace equations very similar to the ones previously obtained for classical gauge groups.

Abstract:We establish a direct connection between scattering amplitudes in planar four-dimensional theories and a remarkable mathematical structure known as the positive Grassmannian. The central physical idea is to focus on on-shell diagrams as objects of fundamental importance to scattering amplitudes. We show that the all-loop integrand in N=4 SYM is naturally represented in this way. On-shell diagrams in this theory are intimately tied to a variety of mathematical objects, ranging from a new graphical representation of permutations to a beautiful stratification of the Grassmannian G(k,n) which generalizes the notion of a simplex in projective space. All physically important operations involving on-shell diagrams map to canonical operations on permutations; in particular, BCFW deformations correspond to adjacent transpositions. Each cell of the positive Grassmannian is naturally endowed with positive coordinates and an invariant measure which determines the on-shell function associated with the diagram. This understanding allows us to classify and compute all on-shell diagrams, and give a geometric understanding for all the non-trivial relations among them. Yangian invariance of scattering amplitudes is transparently represented by diffeomorphisms of G(k,n) which preserve the positive structure. Scattering amplitudes in (1+1)-dimensional integrable systems and the ABJM theory in (2+1) dimensions can both be understood as special cases of these ideas. On-shell diagrams in theories with less (or no) supersymmetry are associated with exactly the same structures in the Grassmannian, but with a measure deformed by a factor encoding ultraviolet singularities. The Grassmannian representation of on-shell processes also gives a new understanding of the all-loop integrand for scattering amplitudes, presenting all integrands in a novel dLog form which directly reflects the underlying positive structure.
Emergent non-invertible symmetries in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory

Abstract:One of the simplest examples of non-invertible symmetries in higher dimensions appears in 4d Maxwell theory, where its $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality group can be combined with gauging subgroups of its electric and magnetic 1-form symmetries to yield such defects at many different values of the coupling. Even though $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory also has an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality group, it only seems to share two types of such non-invertible defects with Maxwell theory (known as duality and triality defects). Motivated by this apparent difference, we begin our investigation of the fate of these symmetries by studying the case of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(1)$ gauge theory which contains Maxwell theory in its content. Surprisingly, we find that the non-invertible defects of Maxwell theory give rise, when combined with the standard $U(1)$ symmetry acting on the free fermions, to defects which act on local operators as elements of the $U(1)$ outer-automorphism of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal algebra, an operation that was referred to in the past as the "bonus symmetry". Turning to the nonabelian case of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, the bonus symmetry is not an exact symmetry of the theory but is known to emerge at the supergravity limit. Based on this observation we study this limit and show that if it is taken in a certain way, non-invertible defects that realize different elements of the bonus symmetry emerge as approximate symmetries, in analogy to the abelian case.

Non-planar integrated correlator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

Abstract:Integrated correlator of four superconformal stress-tensor primaries in $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in the perturbative limit takes a remarkably simple form, where the $L$-loop coefficient is given by a rational multiple of $\zeta(2L+1)$. In this letter, we extend the previous analysis of expressing the perturbative integrated correlator as a linear combination of periods of $f$-graphs, graphical representations for loop integrands, to the non-planar sector at four loops. At this loop order, multiple zeta values make their first appearance when evaluating periods of non-planar $f$-graphs, but cancel non-trivially in the weighted sum. The remaining single zeta value, along with the rational number prefactor, makes a perfect agreement with the prediction from supersymmmetric localisation.

All-loop geometry for four-point correlation functions

Abstract:In this letter, we consider a positive geometry conjectured to encode the loop integrand of four-point stress-energy correlators in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills. Beginning with four lines in twistor space, we characterize a positive subspace to which an $\ell$-loop geometry is attached. The loop geometry then consists of $\ell$ lines in twistor space satisfying positivity conditions among themselves and with respect to the base. Consequently, the $\textit{loop geometry}$ can be viewed as fibration over a $\textit{tree geometry}$. The fibration naturally dissects the base into chambers, in which the degree-$4 \ell$ loop form is unique and distinct for each chamber. Interestingly, up to three loops, the chambers are simply organized by the six ordering of $x^2_{1,2}x^2_{3,4}$, $x^2_{1,4}x^2_{2,3}$ and $x^2_{1,3}x^2_{2,4}$. We explicitly verify our conjecture by computing the loop-forms in terms of a basis of planar conformal integrals up to $\ell=3$, which indeed yield correct loop integrands for the four-point correlator.
