Abstract:We present a self-contained introduction to the theory of chip-firing games on metric graphs, as well as the more recent theory of tropical Prym varieties. We briefly discuss the connection between these notions and their algebraic counterparts and suggest various avenues for future research.

Abstract:In this expository article intended to be accessible to undergraduate students we introduce a finite abelian group that can be associated to any finite connected graph. This group can be defined in an elementary combinatorial way in terms of chip-firing operations, and has been an object of interest in combinatorics, algebraic geometry, statistical physics, and several other areas of mathematics. We will begin with basic definitions and examples and develop a number of properties that can be derived by looking at this group from different angles. Throughout, we will give exercises, some of which are straightforward and some of which are open questions. We will also attempt to highlight some of the many contributions to this area made by undergraduate students

Abstract:This paper provides a friendly introduction to chip-firing games and graph gonality. We use graphs coming from the five Platonic solids to illustrate different tools and techniques for studying these games, including independent sets, treewidth, scramble number, and Dhar's burning algorithm. In addition to showcasing some previously known results, we present the first proofs that the dodecahedron graph has gonality $6$, and that the icosahedron graph has gonality~$9$.

Abstract:We study chip-firing on a signed graph $G_\phi$, employing a general theory of chip-firing on invertible matrices introduced by Guzmán and Klivans. Here a negative edge designates an adversarial relationship, so that firing a vertex incident to such an edge leads to a loss of chips at both endpoints. The chip-firing rule for $G_\phi$ is described by its reduced Laplacian matrix $L_{G_\phi}$, which also defines the critical group ${\mathcal K}(G_\phi)$. The valid chip configurations are given by the lattice points of a rational cone determined by $G_\phi$ and the underlying graph $G$. This gives rise to notions of critical as well as $z$-superstable configurations, both of which are counted by the determinant of $L_{G_\phi}$. We establish general results regarding these configurations, focusing on efficient methods of verifying the underlying properties. We then study the critical groups of signed graphs in the context of vertex switching and Smith normal forms. We use this to compute the critical groups of various classes of signed graphs including signed cycles, wheels, complete graphs, and fans, in the process generalizing results of Biggs and others.

Chip Firing on Directed $k$-ary Trees

Abstract:Chip-firing is a combinatorial game played on a graph in which we place and disperse chips on vertices until a stable state is reached. We study a chip-firing variant played on an infinite rooted directed $k$-ary tree, where we place $k^\ell$ chips on the root for some positive integer $\ell$, and we say a vertex $v$ can fire if it has at least $k$ chips. A vertex fires by dispersing one chip to each out-neighbor. Once every vertex has less than $k$ chips, we reach a stable configuration since no vertex can fire. We determine the exact number and properties of the possible stable configurations of chips in the setting where chips are distinguishable.

Abstract:We study a particular chip-firing process on an infinite path graph. At any time when there are at least $a+b$ chips at a vertex, $a$ chips fire to the left and $b$ chips fire to the right. We describe the final state of this process when we start with $n$ chips at the origin.

Abstract:In 1992, Bitar and Goles introduced the parallel chip-firing game on undirected graphs. Two years later, Prisner extended the game to directed graphs. While the properties of parallel chip-firing games on undirected graphs have been extensively studied, their analogs for parallel chip-firing games on directed graphs have been sporadic. In this paper, we prove the outstanding analogs of the core results of parallel chip-firing games on undirected graphs for those on directed graphs. We find the possible periods of a parallel chip-firing game on a directed simple cycle and introduce the method of Gauss-Jordan elimination on a Laplacian-like matrix to establish a lower bound on the maximum period of a parallel chip-firing game on a directed complete graph and a directed complete bipartite graph. Finally, we expand the method of motors by Jiang, Scully, and Zhang to directed graphs to show that a binary string $s$ can be the atomic firing sequence of a vertex in a parallel chip-firing game on a strongly connected directed graph if and only if $s$ contains $1$ or $s=0$.

On Chip-Firing on Undirected Binary Trees

Abstract:Chip-firing is a combinatorial game played on an undirected graph in which we place chips on vertices. We study chip-firing on an infinite binary tree in which we add a self-loop to the root to ensure each vertex has degree 3. A vertex can fire if the number of chips placed on it is at least its degree. In our case, a vertex can fire if it has at least 3 chips, and it fires by dispersing $1$ chip to each neighbor. Motivated by a 2023 paper by Musiker and Nguyen on this setting of chip-firing, we give an upper bound for the number of stable configurations when we place $2^\ell - 1$ labeled chips at the root. When starting with $N$ chips at the root where $N$ is a positive integer, we determine the number of times each vertex fires when $N$ is not necessarily of the form $2^\ell - 1$. We also calculate the total number of fires in this case.

Abstract:We define the Laplacian matrix and the Jacobian group of a finite graph of groups. We prove analogues of the matrix tree theorem and the class number formula for the order of the Jacobian of a graph of groups. Given a group $G$ acting on a graph $X$, we define natural pushforward and pullback maps between the Jacobian groups of $X$ and the quotient graph of groups $X/\!/G$. For the case $G=\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, we also prove a combinatorial formula for the order of the kernel of the pushforward map.

Abstract:Matthew Baker investigated, in previous work, an elegant, infinite-length game that may be used to study subsets of real numbers. We present two accessible examples of how an important technique from set theory, or a different technique from infinite game theory, may be used to answer Baker's question on whether this game provides a precise characterization for countable subsets of real numbers, and we connect this game to the well-studied Banach-Mazur game from topology.

Abstract:We study rational normal curves via a connection to the chip firing game. A key technique, introduced in this article, is to interpret the defining ideal of the rational normal curve as an ideal associated to a generalisation of a cycle graph called a parcycle. This association allows us to study rational normal curves by combinatorial methods. Given any Cohen-Macaulay initial monomial ideal of the rational normal curve, we explicitly construct (via this association) a corresponding Gröbner degeneration and an explicit combinatorial minimal free resolution of this Gröbner degeneration. Applications include minimal cellular resolutions for each Cohen-Macaulay initial monomial ideal of the rational normal curve, explicit combinatorial formulas for Hilbert series of certain lex-segment ideals and a combinatorial perspective on the Eagon-Northcott complex associated to the rational normal curve.

Non-Stabilizing Parallel Chip-Firing Games

Abstract:In 2010, Kominers and Kominers proved that any parallel chip-firing game on $G(V,\,E)$ with $|\sigma|\geq 4|E|-|V|$ chips stabilizes. Recently, Bu, Choi, and Xu made the bound exact: all games with $|\sigma|< |E|$ chips or $|\sigma|> 3|E|-|V|$ chips stabilize. Meanwhile, Levine found a "devil's staircase'' pattern in the plot of the activity of parallel chip-firing games against their density of chips. The stabilizing bound of Bu, Choi, and Xu corresponds to the top and bottom stairs of this staircase, in which the activity is 1 and 0, respectively. In this paper, we analyze the middle stair of the staircase, corresponding to activity $\frac{1}{2}$. We prove that all parallel chip-firing games with $2|E|-|V|< |\sigma|< 2|E|$ have period $T\neq 3,\,4$. In fact, this is exactly the range of $|\sigma|$ for which all games are non-stabilizing. We conjecture that all parallel chip-firing games with $2|E|-|V|< |\sigma|<2|E|$ have $T=2$ and thus activity $\frac{1}{2}$. This conjecture has been proven for trees by Bu, Choi, and Xu, cycles by Dall'asta, and complete graphs by Levine. We extend Levine's method of conjugate configurations to prove the conjecture on complete bipartite graphs $K_{a,a}$.

Abstract:We study how parallel chip-firing on the complete graph K_n changes behavior as we vary the total number of chips. Surprisingly, the activity of the system, defined as the average number of firings per time step, does not increase smoothly in the number of chips; instead it remains constant over long intervals, punctuated by sudden jumps. In the large n limit we find a "devil's staircase" dependence of activity on the number of chips. The proof proceeds by reducing the chip-firing dynamics to iteration of a self-map of the circle S^1, in such a way that the activity of the chip-firing state equals the Poincare rotation number of the circle map. The stairs of the devil's staircase correspond to periodic chip-firing states of small period.

Abstract:We study the paintability, an on-line version of choosability, of complete multipartite graphs. We do this by considering an equivalent chip game introduced by Duraj, Gutowski, and Kozik. We consider complete multipartite graphs with $ n $ parts of size at most 3. Using a computational approach, we establish upper bounds on the paintability of such graphs for small values of $ n. $ The choosability of complete multipartite graphs is closely related to value $ p(n, m) $, the minimum number of edges in a $n$-uniform hypergraph with no panchromatic $m$-coloring. We consider an online variant of this parameter $ p_{OL}(n, m), $ introduced by Khuzieva et al. using a symmetric chip game. With this symmetric chip game, we find an improved upper bound for $ p_{OL}(n, m)$ when $m \geq 3$ and $n$ is large. Our method also implies a lower bound on the paintability of complete multipartite graphs with $m \geq 3$ parts of equal size.

Abstract:The parallel chip-firing game is an automaton on graphs in which vertices "fire" chips to their neighbors when they have enough chips to do so. The game is always periodic, and we concern ourselves with the firing sequences of vertices. We introduce the concepts of motorized parallel chip-firing games and motor vertices, study the effects of motors connected to a tree and show that motorized games can be transformed into ordinary games if the motors' firing sequences occur in some ordinary game. We then characterize exactly which periodic firing patterns can occur in an ordinary game and state some implications of the finding.

Abstract:Hereditary chip-firing models generalize the Abelian sandpile model and the cluster firing model to an exponential family of games induced by covers of the vertex set. This generalization retains some desirable properties, e.g. stabilization is independent of firings chosen and each chip-firing equivalence class contains a unique recurrent configuration. In this paper we present an explicit bijection between the recurrent configurations of a hereditary chip-firing model on a graph and its spanning trees.

Abstract:For a collection of papers in memory of Elwyn Berlekamp (1940-2019), John Conway (1937-2020), and Richard Guy (1916-2020). The Sprague-Grundy theory for finite games without cycles was extended to general finite games by Cedric Smith and by Aviezri Fraenkel and coauthors. We observe that the same framework used to classify finite games also covers the case of locally finite games (that is, games where any position has only finitely many options). In particular, any locally finite game is equivalent to some finite game. We then study cases where the directed graph of a game is chosen randomly, and is given by the tree of a Galton-Watson branching process. Natural families of offspring distributions display a surprisingly wide range of behaviour. The setting shows a nice interplay between ideas from combinatorial game theory and ideas from probability.

Abstract:It is well known that there is a duality map between the superstable configurations and the critical configurations of a graph. This was extended to all M-matrices in (Guzmàn-Klivans 2015). We show a natural way to extend this to all $(L,M)$-chip firing pairs introduced in (Guzmàn-Klivans 2016). In addition, we study various properties of this map.

A matroidal perspective on the tropical Prym variety

Abstract:We associate a matroid $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ to a harmonic double cover $\pi:\widetilde{\Gamma}\to \Gamma$ of metric graphs. The matroid $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ is a geometric interpretation of Zaslavsky's signed graphic matroid. We show that the principalization $\mathrm{Prym}_p(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ of the tropical Prym variety of the double cover can be reconstructed from $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$, equipped with certain additional decorations. We describe the simplification of the matroid $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ and show that the Prym variety does not change under simplification.

Abstract:We investigate a variant of the chip-firing process on the infinite path graph: rather than treating the chips as indistinguishable, we label them with positive integers. To fire an unstable vertex, i.e. a vertex with more than one chip, we choose any two chips at that vertex and move the lesser-labeled chip to the left and the greater-labeled chip to the right. This labeled version of the chip-firing process exhibits a remarkable confluence property, similar to but subtler than the confluence that prevails for unlabeled chip-firing: when all chips start at the origin and the number of chips is even, the chips always end up in sorted order. Our proof of sorting relies upon an independently interesting lemma concerning unlabeled chip- firing which says that stabilization preserves a natural partial order on configurations. We also discuss some extensions of this sorting phenomenon to other graphs (variants of the infinite path), to other initial configurations, and to other Cartan-Killing types.
