Abstract:We characterise asymptotic stability of port-Hamiltonian systems by means of matrix conditions using well-known resolvent criteria from $C_0$-semigroup theory. The idea of proof is based on a recent characterisation of exponential stability established in [Trostorff, Waurick, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2201.10367" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2201.10367">arXiv:2201.10367</a>], which was inspired by a structural observation concerning port-Hamiltonian systems from [Picard et al., <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2106.10937" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2106.10937">arXiv:2106.10937</a>, accepted in SIAM SICON]. We apply the result to study the asymptotic stability of a network of vibrating strings.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the characterization problem of the asymptotic stability of port - Hamiltonian systems. Specifically, the author uses the known analyticity criteria in the C0 - semigroup theory through matrix conditions to characterize the asymptotic stability of port - Hamiltonian systems. This method is based on the recent characterization work on exponential stability, which is inspired by the structural observations of port - Hamiltonian systems. In addition, the author also applies the results to study the asymptotic stability of vibrating string networks.
### Core Problems of the Paper
1. **Characterization of Asymptotic Stability**:
- The author uses matrix conditions and C0 - semigroup theory to characterize the asymptotic stability of port - Hamiltonian systems.
- By introducing extended differential equations, the author applies the well - known Batty–Duyckaerts theorem to characterize semi - uniform stability and asymptotic stability.
2. **Revisiting Exponential Stability**:
- The author reviews the conditions of exponential stability and relates it to asymptotic stability.
- Through a series of equivalent conditions, the author proves the relationship between asymptotic stability and certain matrix conditions.
3. **Application Examples**:
- The author applies the above - mentioned theory to a specific example, that is, the stability analysis of vibrating string networks.
- Through detailed derivation and verification, the author shows how to apply the theoretical results to judge the stability of a specific system.
### Main Contributions
- **Theoretical Framework**: Established a theoretical framework for the asymptotic stability of port - Hamiltonian systems, including the characterization of semi - uniform stability and asymptotic stability.
- **Application Examples**: Through the example of vibrating string networks, showed how to apply the theoretical results to actual systems and verified the effectiveness of the theory.
- **Mathematical Tools**: Utilized mathematical tools such as C0 - semigroup theory and the Batty–Duyckaerts theorem to provide strict mathematical proofs.
### Key Formulas
- **Partial Differential Equation of Port - Hamiltonian Systems**:
\[
\frac{\partial x}{\partial t}(\zeta, t)=\sum_{k = 0}^N P_k\frac{\partial^k}{\partial \zeta^k}(H(\zeta)x(\zeta, t))
\]
where \( P_k\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times n} \) satisfies \( P_k^* = (- 1)^{k + 1}P_k \), and \( P_N \) is invertible. The Hamiltonian density \( H:(a, b)\to\mathbb{C}^{n\times n} \) is uniformly bounded, satisfies \( H(\zeta)^* = H(\zeta) \) and there exists \( m>0 \) such that \( H(\zeta)\geq mI \).
- **Boundary Conditions**:
\[
W_B\begin{bmatrix}
(Hx)(b, t)\\
\vdots\\
\frac{\partial^{N - 1}}{\partial \zeta^{N - 1}}(Hx)(b, t)\\
(Hx)(a, t)\\
\vdots\\
\frac{\partial^{N - 1}}{\partial \zeta^{N - 1}}(Hx)(a, t)
\end{bmatrix}=0
\]
- **Equivalent Conditions for Asymptotic Stability**:
\[
\sigma_p(A)\cap i\mathbb{R}=\emptyset
\]
where \( \sigma_p(A) \) represents the point spectrum of the operator \( A \).
- **Stability Conditions of Vibrating String Networks**:
\[
