Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:Two new invariants f ((1,1)) and g ((1,1)) were introduced by Du and Yau for solving the complex Plateau problem. These invariants measure in some sense how far away the complex manifolds are from having global complex coordinates. In this paper, we study these two invariants further for rational surface singularities. We prove that these two invariants never vanish for rational surface singularities, which confirms Yau's conjecture for strict positivity of these two invariants. As an application, we solve regularity problem of the Harvey-Lawson solution to the complex Plateau problem for a strongly pseudoconvex compact rational CR manifold of dimension 3. We also construct resolution manifolds for rational triple points by means of local coordinates and show that f ((1,1)) = g ((1,1)) = 1 for rational triple points.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce some new invariants for complex manifolds. These invariants measure in some sense how far the complex manifolds are away from having global complex coordinates. For applications, we introduce two new invariants f((1,1)) and g((1,1)) for isolated surface singularities. We show that f((1,1)) = g((1,1)) = 1 for rational double points and cyclic quotient singularities.

Abstract:Given a germ of a smooth plane curve $(\{f(x,y)=0\},0)\subset (\mathbb K^2,0), \mathbb K=\mathbb R, \mathbb C$, with an isolated singularity, we define two invariants $I_f$ and $V_f\in \mathbb N\cup\{\infty\}$ which count the number of inflections and vertices (suitably interpreted in the complex case) concentrated at the singular point; the first is an affine invariant and the second is invariant under similarities of $\mathbb R^2$, and their analogue for $\mathbb C^2$. We show that for almost all representations of $f$, in the sense that their complement is of infinite codimension, these invariants are finite. Indeed when the curve has no smooth components they are always finite and bounded and we can be much more explicit about the values they can attain; the set of possible values is of course an analytic invariant of $f$. We illustrate our results by computing these invariants for Arnold's $\mathcal K$-simple singularities as well as singularities that have ${\mathcal A}$-simple parametrisations. We also obtain a relationship between these invariants, the Milnor number of $f$ and the contact of the curve germ with its osculating circle.

Abstract:We introduce new invariants of the projective plane (and, more generally, of certain toric surfaces) that arise from the appropriate enumeration of real curves of genera one and two. These invariants admit a refinement (according to the quantum index) similar to the one introduced by Grigory Mikhalkin in the rational case.

Abstract:Cubic complexes appear in the theory of finite type invariants so often that one can ascribe them to basic notions of the theory. In this paper we begin the exposition of finite type invariants from the `cubic' point of view. Finite type invariants of knots and homology 3-spheres fit perfectly into this conception. In particular, we get a natural explanation why they behave like polynomials.

Abstract:We study properties of rational curves on complete intersections in positive characteristic. It has long been known that in characteristic 0, smooth Calabi–Yau and general type varieties are not uniruled. In positive characteristic, however, there are well-known counterexamples to this statement. We will show that nevertheless, a general Calabi–Yau or general type complete intersection in projective space is not uniruled. We will also show that the space of complete intersections of degree (d1,⋯,dk) containing a rational curve has codimension at least ∑i=1kdi−2n+2 and give similar results for hypersurfaces containing higher genus curves.

Invariants of real symplectic 4-manifolds out of reducible and cuspidal curves

Abstract:We construct invariants under deformation of real symplectic 4-manifolds. These invariants are obtained by counting three different kinds of real rational J-holomorphic curves which realize a given homology class and pass through a given real configuration of (the appropriate number of) points. These curves are cuspidal curves, reducible curves and curves with a prescribed tangent line at some real point of the configuration. They are counted with respect to some sign defined by the parity of their number of isolated real double points and in the case of reducible curves, with respect to some mutiplicity. In the case of the complex projective plane equipped with its standard symplectic form and real structure, these invariants coincide with the ones previously constructed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.AG/0303145" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0303145">math.AG/0303145</a>. This leads to a relation between the count of real rational J-holomorphic curves done in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.AG/0303145" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0303145">math.AG/0303145</a> and the count of real rational reducible J-holomorphic curves presented here.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to show that the theory of curvature invariant, as introduced by Arveson, admits a natural extension to the framework of -twisted polyballs which consist of k-tuples of row contractions satisfying certain -commutation relations with respect to a set of unitary commuting operators on a Hilbert space . Throughout this paper, we will be concerned with the curvature of the elements with positive trace class defect operator . We prove the existence of the curvature invariant and present some of its basic properties. A distinguished role as a universal model among the pure elements in -twisted polyballs is played by the standard -twisted multi-shift S acting on . The curvature invariant can be any non-negative real number and measures the amount by which A deviates from the universal model S. Special attention is given to the -twisted multi-shift S and the invariant subspaces (co-invariant) under S and , due to the fact that any pure element with is the compression of S to such a co-invariant subspace.

Abstract:We introduce new invariants of the projective plane (and, more generally, of certain toric surfaces) that arise from the appropriate enumeration of real elliptic curves. These invariants admit a refinement (according to the quantum index) similar to the one introduced by Grigory Mikhalkin in the rational case. We also construct tropical counterparts of the refined elliptic invariants under consideration and establish a tropical algorithm allowing one to compute, {\it via} a suitable version of the correspondence theorem, the above invariants.

Refined invariants of finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras

Abstract:We define and study refined Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of contractible curves in complex algebraic 3-folds, alongside the cohomological Donaldson--Thomas theory of finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras. These Gopakumar-Vafa invariants can be constructed one of two ways: as cohomological BPS invariants of contraction algebras controlling the deformation theory of these curves, as defined by Donovan and Wemyss, or by feeding the moduli spaces that Katz used to define genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants into the machinery developed by Joyce et al. The conjecture that the two definitions give isomorphic results is a special case of a kind of categorified version of the strong rationality conjecture due to Pandharipande and Thomas, that we discuss and propose a means of proving. We prove the positivity of the cohomological/refined BPS invariants of all finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras. This result supports this strengthening of the strong rationality conjecture, as well as the conjecture of Brown and Wemyss stating that all finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras for appropriate symmetric quivers are isomorphic to contraction algebras.

Invariants of the singularities of secant varieties of curves

Abstract:Consider a smooth projective curve and a given embedding into projective space via a sufficiently positive line bundle. We can form the secant variety of $k$-planes through the curve. These are singular varieties, with each secant variety being singular along the last. We study invariants of the singularities for these varieties. In the case of an arbitrary curve, we compute the intersection cohomology in terms of the cohomology of the curve. We then turn our attention to rational normal curves. In this setting, we prove that all of the secant varieties are rational homology manifolds, meaning their singular cohomology satisfies Poincaré duality. We then compute the nearby and vanishing cycles for the largest nontrivial secant variety, which is a projective hypersurface.

Universally counting curves in Calabi--Yau threefolds

Abstract:We show that curve enumeration invariants of complex threefolds with nef anti-canonical bundle are determined by their values on local curves. This statement and its proof are inspired by the proof of the Gopakumar--Vafa integrality conjecture by Ionel and Parker. The conjecture of Maulik, Nekrasov, Okounkov, and Pandharipande relating Gromov--Witten and Donaldson--Pandharipande-Thomas invariants is known for local curves by work of Bryan, Okounkov, and Pandharipande, hence holds for all complex threefolds with nef anti-canonical bundle (in particular, all Calabi--Yau threefolds).

Abstract:Let $X$ be an algebraic variety equipped with a dominant rational self-map $\phi:X\to X$. A new quantity measuring the interaction of $(X,\phi)$ with trivial dynamical systems is introduced; the stabilised algebraic dimension of $(X,\phi)$ captures the maximum number of new algebraically independent invariant rational functions on the cartesian product of $(X, \phi)$ and $(Y, \psi)$, as $(Y,\psi)$ ranges over all algebraic dynamical systems. It is shown that this birational invariant agrees with the maximum dimension of a dominant equivariant rational image $(X',\phi')$ where $\phi'$ is part of an algebraic group action on $X'$. As a consequence, it is deduced that if some cartesian power of $(X,\phi)$ admits a nonconstant invariant rational function, then already the second cartesian power does.

$L^2$-type invariants for complex smooth quasi-projective varieties -- a survey

Abstract:Let X be a complex smooth quasi-projective variety with an epimorphism $\nu \colon \pi_1(X)\twoheadrightarrow \mathbb{Z}^n$. We survey recent developments about the asymptotic behaviour of Betti numbers with any field coefficients and the order of the torsion part of singular integral homology of finite abelian covers of $X$ associated to $\nu$, known as the $L^2$-type invariants. We give relations between $L^2$-type invariants, Alexander invariants and cohomology jump loci. When $\nu$ is orbifold effective, we give explicit formulas for $L^2$-invariants at homological degree one in terms of geometric information of $X$. We also propose several related open questions for hyperplane arrangement complement.

Invariants for links and 3-manifolds from the modular category with two simple objects

Abstract:We describe the simplest non-trivial modular category $\mathfrak{E}$ with two simple objects. Then we extract from this category the invariant for non-oriented links in 3-sphere and two invariants for 3-manifolds: the complex-valued Turaev - Reshetikhin type invariant $tr_{\varepsilon}$ and the real-valued Turaev - Viro type invariant $tv_{\varepsilon}$. These two invariants for 3-manifolds are related by the equality $|tr_{\varepsilon}|^2\cdot (\varepsilon + 2) = tv_{\varepsilon}$, where $\varepsilon$ is a root of the equation $\varepsilon^2 = \varepsilon + 1$. Finally, we show that $tv_{\varepsilon}$ coincides with the well-known $\varepsilon$ invariant for 3-manifolds.

Abstract:Welschinger invariants enumerate real nodal rational curves in the plane or in another real rational surface. We analyze the existence of similar enumerative invariants that count real rational plane curves having prescribed non-nodal singularities and passing through a generic conjugation-invariant configuration of appropriately many points in the plane. We show that an invariant like this is unique: it enumerates real rational three-cuspidal quartics that pass through generically chosen four pairs of complex conjugate points. Consequently, we show that through any generic configuration of four pairs of complex conjugate points, one can always trace a pair of real rational three-cuspidal quartics.
