Abstract:Marine plastic pollution is an emerging environmental problem since it pollutes the ocean, air and food whilst endangering the ocean wildlife via the ingestion and entanglements. During the last decade, an enormous effort has been spent on finding possible solutions to marine plastic pollution. Remote sensing imagery sits in a crucial place for these efforts since it provides informative earth observation products, and the current technology offers further essential development. Despite the advances in the last decade, there is still a way to go for marine plastic monitoring research where challenges are rarely highlighted. This paper contributes to the literature with a critical review and aims to highlight literature milestones in marine debris and suspected plastics (MD&SP) monitoring by promoting the computational imaging methodology behind these approaches along with detailed discussions on challenges and potential future research directions.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the issue of marine plastic pollution monitoring. Specifically, it focuses on how to detect and track plastic debris in the ocean using remote sensing computational imaging technology. Due to the unconscious use of plastic products by humans over the past 10 years, the ocean faces a severe threat of plastic pollution, posing significant risks to marine ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. Despite substantial efforts by public initiatives and academic institutions in recent years to reduce marine plastic pollution, the use of remote sensing technology for plastic pollution monitoring is still in its early stages. Therefore, this paper, through a comprehensive literature review, highlights the current progress in using remote sensing computational imaging technology for marine debris monitoring and underscores the research milestones in this field. The paper first introduces the current state of marine plastic pollution and its environmental and economic impacts, then discusses the current technological means used to monitor marine plastic debris, particularly satellite remote sensing technology and computational imaging methods. The paper also explores the potential applications of machine learning and deep learning in this field, proposing various plastic detection methods based on satellite data and other remote sensing technologies. Additionally, the paper analyzes the effectiveness of different spectral indices in identifying marine plastic debris and points out that future research directions should include improving the quality and quantity of datasets to better support the development of automated detection systems.
