Abstract:I review the current status of lattice Monte-Carlo computations of the equation of state of QCD, our current understanding of the thermalization process at collider energies, and two new theoretical developments, one pertaining to the ab-initio calculation of the low-$x$ gluon structure of heavy nuclei, the other to the chaotic behavior of QCD. At the end I give a brief overview of the status of various quark-gluon plasma signatures.

Abstract:Nuclear matter is predicted to undergo a phase transition and become a plasma of quarks and gluons (QGP) at high temperature and density. Recent experimental results from high-energy heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-ion Collider (RHIC) indicate the production of a strongly interacting quark-gluon matter with fluid-like properties. I will discuss some expected features of QCD at high temperature and density, theoretical interpretations of experimental observations and challenges in unraveling some of the basic properties of dense matter in the strongly interacting regime.

Abstract:This short paper is an attempt to describe a theorist's view of the goals of relativistic heavy ion program which has just entered the collider era. These goals are centered around understanding the properties and the critical behavior of Quantum Chromo-Dynamics (QCD) in the non-linear regime of high color field strength and high parton density. Some of the current theoretical challenges are highlighted, and the place of heavy ion research in the broader context of modern particle and nuclear physics is discussed.

Abstract:A brief overview of the theory of open heavy flavor dynamics in QCD matter produced in high energy heavy-ion collisions is presented. First, we will summarise the phenomenological efforts to estimate the heavy quark diffusion coefficients obtained within different models. Then, the recent theoretical developments from different groups to probe the medium properties using heavy quarks will be presented. Heavy quarks are also considered as an ideal probe for the initial stage of heavy-ion collisions. In the end, we present the recent theoretical progress made to probe the early-stage effects, pre-equilibrium phase, and electromagnetic fields.

Abstract:In high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions, a transient state of thermalized, hot and dense matter governed by Quantum Chromodynamics is produced. Properties of this state are reflected in the bulk low transverse momentum (P_T) hadron production which represent the remnant of the collective medium as well as in modifications of so-called probes which are not part of the thermalized medium, i.e. jets generated in high P_T processes or leptons and photons which do not participate in the strong interaction. Theory effords aim at deducing the properties of QCD thermodynamics and collectivity from such observables.

Abstract:Survival in groups of termites is known to be socially facilitated since individual longevity is increased together with the size of the group. Here we report on experimental evidence that survival as a function of group size in {\textit Cornitermes cumulans} (Kollar) does not increase asysmptotically but it peaks in a group size range at which individual longevity is maximal. Strinkly, this same effect in other social insects was noted more than fifty years ago, but it was regarded as ``aberrant'' since it has been generally assumed that individual survival should increase with the size of the group. We also provide evidence that individual activity --measured as mobility-- is maximal at approximately the same group-size range as the observed survival

Abstract:In this lecture we review recent progress in various aspects of non-equilibrium QFT with respect to relativistic heavy ion collisions. As a first and rather general study we summarize our (numerical) investigations for a dissipative quantum time evolution of $\phi^4$-field theory for a spatially homogeneous system in 2+1 space-time dimensions on the basis of the Kadanoff-Baym equations. The initial conditions can be chosen arbitrarily and far from equilibrium. The calculations demonstrate how thermalization and chemical equilibration is achieved ab initio from the underlying QFT. As a possible candidate for a non-equilibrium phase transition phenomena we then adress the stochastic formation of disoriented chiral condensates. Finally we elaborate on a new 3+1 dimensional Monte Carlo parton cascade solving kinetic Boltzmann processes including inelastic multiplication processes (gg<->ggg) in an unified manner, where the back reaction channel is treated for the first time fully consistently.

Abstract:In this report we review recent progress achieved in the understanding of heavy quarkonium under extreme conditions from a theory perspective. Its focus lies both on quarkonium properties in thermal equilibrium, as well as recent developments towards a genuine real-time description, valid also out-of-equilibrium. We will give an overview of the theory tools developed and deployed over the last decade, including effective field theories, lattice field theory simulations, modern methods for spectral reconstructions and the the open-quantum systems paradigm. The report will discuss in detail the concept of quarkonium melting, providing the reader with a contemporary perspective. In order to judge where future progress is needed we will also discuss recent results from experiments and phenomenological modeling of quarkonium in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:The two arguably most generic phenomena seen in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions are the flow of essentially all soft hadronic observables and the quenching of essentially all hard hadronic observables. Limiting the discussion to these two classes of phenomena, I review what can be said so far about the properties of hot and dense QCD matter from the heavy ion programs at RHIC and at the LHC, and I discuss the opportunities for further progress in the coming years.

Abstract:We give a review of modern theoretical understanding of the physics of QCD at finite temperature. Three temperature regions are studied in details: the low temperature region where the system presents a rarefied pion gas and its properties are described by chiral perturbation theory, the high temperature region where the system is adequately described in terms of quarks and gluons, and the intermediate region where phase transition occurs in some variants of the theory.

Molecular states with charm: insights from vacuum and finite-temperature analyses

Abstract:This contribution to the SQM2024 conference covers the molecular hypothesis for the internal structure of some open and hidden charm states. The use of effective theories that incorporate heavy-quark spin symmetry, combined with unitarization techniques, has provided strong evidences supporting this interpretation. In the heavy-light sector, we discuss the double pole structure of the $D_0^*(2300)$ and the generation of the $D_{s0}^*(2317)$. In the hidden charm sector, we focus on the exotic $X(3872)$ and its heavy-quark partner, the $X(4014)$. Furthermore, we emphasize the benefits of femtoscopic measurements in $p+p$ collisions to establish the nature of these states, as well as the potential role of temperature to discern their internal structure.

Thermal QCD in a non-uniform magnetic background

Abstract:Off-central heavy-ion collisions are known to feature magnetic fields with magnitudes and characteristic gradients corresponding to the scale of the strong interactions. In this work, we employ equilibrium lattice simulations of the underlying theory, QCD, involving similar inhomogeneous magnetic field profiles to achieve a better understanding of this system. We simulate three flavors of dynamical staggered quarks with physical masses at a range of magnetic fields and temperatures, and extrapolate the results to the continuum limit. Analyzing the impact of the field on the quark condensate and the Polyakov loop, we find non-trivial spatial features that render the QCD medium qualitatively different as in the homogeneous setup, especially at temperatures around the transition. In addition, we construct leading-order chiral perturbation theory for the inhomogeneous background and compare its prediction to our lattice results at low temperature. Our findings will be useful to benchmark effective theories and low-energy models of QCD for a better description of peripheral heavy-ion collisions.
