Abstract:Promise Constraint Satisfaction Problems (PCSP) were proposed recently by Brakensiek and Guruswami <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1704.01937" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1704.01937">arXiv:1704.01937</a> as a framework to study approximations for Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP). Informally a PCSP asks to distinguish between whether a given instance of a CSP has a solution or not even a specified relaxation can be satisfied. All currently known tractable PCSPs can be reduced in a natural way to tractable CSPs. Barto <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1909.04878" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1909.04878">arXiv:1909.04878</a> presented an example of a PCSP over Boolean structures for which this reduction requires solving a CSP over an infinite structure. We give a first example of a PCSP over Boolean structures which reduces to a tractable CSP over a structure of size $3$ but not smaller. Further we investigate properties of PCSPs that reduce to systems of linear equations or to CSPs over structures with semilattice or majority polymorphism.

Abstract:The study of the complexity of the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP), centred around the Feder-Vardi Dichotomy Conjecture, has been very prominent in the last two decades. After a long concerted effort and many partial results, the Dichotomy Conjecture has been proved in 2017 independently by Bulatov and Zhuk. At about the same time, a vast generalisation of CSP, called promise CSP, has started to gain prominence. In this survey, we explain the importance of promise CSP and highlight many new very interesting features that the study of promise CSP has brought to light. The complexity classification quest for the promise CSP is wide open, and we argue that, despite the promise CSP being more general, this quest is rather more accessible to a wide range of researchers than the dichotomy-led study of the CSP has been.

Abstract:We present a template for the Promise Constraint Satisfaction Problem (PCSP) which is NP-hard but does not satisfy the current state-of-the-art hardness condition [ACMTCT'21]. We introduce a new "injective" condition based on the smooth version of the layered PCP Theorem and use this new condition to confirm that the problem is indeed NP-hard. In the second part of the article, we establish a dichotomy for Boolean PCSPs defined by templates with polymorphisms in the set of linear threshold functions. The reasoning relies on the new injective condition.

Abstract:For a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP), a robust satisfaction algorithm is one that outputs an assignment satisfying most of the constraints on instances that are near-satisfiable. It is known that the CSPs that admit efficient robust satisfaction algorithms are precisely those of bounded width, i.e., CSPs whose satisfiability can be checked by a simple local consistency algorithm (eg., 2-SAT or Horn-SAT in the Boolean case). While the exact satisfiability of a bounded width CSP can be checked by combinatorial algorithms, the robust algorithm is based on rounding a canonical Semidefinite programming(SDP) relaxation. In this work, we initiate the study of robust satisfaction algorithms for promise CSPs, which are a vast generalization of CSPs that have received much attention recently. The motivation is to extend the theory beyond CSPs, as well as to better understand the power of SDPs. We present robust SDP rounding algorithms under some general conditions, namely the existence of particular high-dimensional Boolean symmetries known as majority or alternating threshold polymorphisms. On the hardness front, we prove that the lack of such polymorphisms makes the PCSP hard for all pairs of symmetric Boolean predicates. Our method involves a novel method to argue SDP gaps via the absence of certain colorings of the sphere, with connections to sphere Ramsey theory. We conjecture that PCSPs with robust satisfaction algorithms are precisely those for which the feasibility of the canonical SDP implies (exact) satisfiability. We also give a precise algebraic condition, known as a minion characterization, of which PCSPs have the latter property.

CLAP: A New Algorithm for Promise CSPs

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 52, Issue 1, Page 1-37, February 2023. We propose a new algorithm for Promise Constraint Satisfaction Problems (PCSPs). It is a combination of the Constraint Basic LP relaxation and the Affine IP relaxation (CLAP). We give a characterization of the power of CLAP in terms of a minion homomorphism. Using this characterization, we identify a certain weak notion of symmetry which, if satisfied by infinitely many polymorphisms of PCSPs, guarantees tractability. We demonstrate that there are PCSPs solved by CLAP that are not solved by any of the existing algorithms for PCSPs; in particular, not by the [math] algorithm of Brakensiek et al. [SIAM J. Comput., 49 (2020), pp. 1232--1248] and not by a reduction to tractable finite-domain CSPs.

Abstract:We continue the investigation of polynomial-time sparsification for NP-complete Boolean Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs). The goal in sparsification is to reduce the number of constraints in a problem instance without changing the answer, such that a bound on the number of resulting constraints can be given in terms of the number of variables n. We investigate how the worst-case sparsification size depends on the types of constraints allowed in the problem formulation—the constraint language—and identify constraint languages giving the best-possible and worst-possible behavior for worst-case sparsifiability. Two algorithmic results are presented. The first result essentially shows that for any arity k, the only constraint type for which no nontrivial sparsification is possible has exactly one falsifying assignment, and corresponds to logical OR (up to negations). Our second result concerns linear sparsification, that is, a reduction to an equivalent instance with (O(n)) constraints. Using linear algebra over rings of integers modulo prime powers, we give an elegant necessary and sufficient condition for a constraint type to be captured by a degree-1 polynomial over such a ring, which yields linear sparsifications. The combination of these algorithmic results allows us to prove two characterizations that capture the optimal sparsification sizes for a range of Boolean CSPs. For NP-complete Boolean CSPs whose constraints are symmetric (the satisfaction depends only on the number of 1 values in the assignment, not on their positions), we give a complete characterization of which constraint languages allow for a linear sparsification. For Boolean CSPs in which every constraint has arity at most three, we characterize the optimal size of sparsifications in terms of the largest OR that can be expressed by the constraint language.

Abstract:The constraint satisfaction problem asks to decide if a set of constraints over a relational structure $\mathcal{A}$ is satisfiable (CSP$(\mathcal{A})$). We consider CSP$(\mathcal{A} \cup \mathcal{B})$ where $\mathcal{A}$ is a structure and $\mathcal{B}$ is an alien structure, and analyse its (parameterized) complexity when at most $k$ alien constraints are allowed. We establish connections and obtain transferable complexity results to several well-studied problems that previously escaped classification attempts. Our novel approach, utilizing logical and algebraic methods, yields an FPT versus pNP dichotomy for arbitrary finite structures and sharper dichotomies for Boolean structures and first-order reducts of $(\mathbb{N},=)$ (equality CSPs), together with many partial results for general $\omega$-categorical structures.

Abstract:The Mermin-Peres magic square is a celebrated example of a system of Boolean linear equations that is not (classically) satisfiable but is satisfiable via linear operators on a Hilbert space of dimension four. A natural question is then, for what kind of problems such a phenomenon occurs? Atserias, Kolaitis, and Severini answered this question for all Boolean Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs): For 0-Valid-SAT, 1-Valid-SAT, 2-SAT, Horn-SAT, and Dual Horn-SAT, classical satisfiability and operator satisfiability is the same and thus there is no gap; for all other Boolean CSPs, these notions differ as there are gaps, i.e., there are unsatisfiable instances that are satisfiable via operators on Hilbert spaces. We generalize their result to CSPs on arbitrary finite domains and give an almost complete classification: First, we show that NP-hard CSPs admit a separation between classical satisfiability and satisfiability via operators on finite- and infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Second, we show that tractable CSPs of bounded width have no satisfiability gaps of any kind. Finally, we show that tractable CSPs of unbounded width can simulate, in a satisfiability-gap-preserving fashion, linear equations over an Abelian group of prime order $p$; for such CSPs, we obtain a separation of classical satisfiability and satisfiability via operators on infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Furthermore, if $p=2$, such CSPs also have gaps separating classical satisfiability and satisfiability via operators on finite- and infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces.

Complexity Classification Transfer for CSPs via Algebraic Products

Abstract:We study the complexity of infinite-domain constraint satisfaction problems: our basic setting is that a complexity classification for the CSPs of first-order expansions of a structure $\mathfrak A$ can be transferred to a classification of the CSPs of first-order expansions of another structure $\mathfrak B$. We exploit a product of structures (the algebraic product) that corresponds to the product of the respective polymorphism clones and present a complete complexity classification of the CSPs for first-order expansions of the $n$-fold algebraic power of $(\mathbb{Q};<)$. This is proved by various algebraic and logical methods in combination with knowledge of the polymorphisms of the tractable first-order expansions of $(\mathbb{Q};<)$ and explicit descriptions of the expressible relations in terms of syntactically restricted first-order formulas. By combining our classification result with general classification transfer techniques, we obtain surprisingly strong new classification results for highly relevant formalisms such as Allen's Interval Algebra, the $n$-dimensional Block Algebra, and the Cardinal Direction Calculus, even if higher-arity relations are allowed. Our results confirm the infinite-domain tractability conjecture for classes of structures that have been difficult to analyse with older methods. For the special case of structures with binary signatures, the results can be substantially strengthened and tightly connected to Ord-Horn formulas; this solves several longstanding open problems from the AI literature.

Abstract:Symmetric Datalog, a fragment of the logic programming language Datalog, is conjectured to capture all constraint satisfaction problems (CSP) in L. Therefore developing tools that help us understand whether or not a CSP can be defined in symmetric Datalog is an important task. It is widely known that a CSP is definable in Datalog and linear Datalog if and only if that CSP has bounded treewidth and bounded pathwidth duality, respectively. In the case of symmetric Datalog, Bulatov, Krokhin and Larose ask for such a duality (2008). We provide two such dualities, and give applications. In particular, we give a short and simple new proof of the result of Dalmau and Larose that "Maltsev + Datalog -> symmetric Datalog" (2008). In the second part of the paper, we provide some evidence for the conjecture of Dalmau (2002) that every CSP in NL is definable in linear Datalog. Our results also show that a wide class of CSPs-CSPs which do not have bounded pathwidth duality (e.g., the P-complete Horn-3Sat problem)-cannot be defined by any polynomial size family of monotone read-once nondeterministic branching programs.

Abstract:We study Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) in an infinite context. We show that the dichotomy between easy and hard problems -- established already in the finite case -- presents itself as the strength of the corresponding De Bruijin-Erdős-type compactness theorem over ZF. More precisely, if $\mathcal{D}$ is a structure, let $K_\mathcal{D}$ stand for the following statement: for every structure $\mathcal{X}$ if every finite substructure of $\mathcal{X}$ admits a solution to $\mathcal{D}$, then so does $\mathcal{X}$. We prove that if $\mathcal{D}$ admits no cyclic polymorphism, and thus it is NP-complete by the CSP Dichotomy Theorem, then $K_\mathcal{D}$ is equivalent to the Boolean Prime Ideal Theorem (BPI) over ZF. Conversely, we also show that if $\mathcal{D}$ admits a cyclic polymorphism, and thus it is in P, then $K_\mathcal{D}$ is strictly weaker than BPI.

Abstract:We study interactions between Skolem Arithmetic and certain classes of Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs). We revisit results of Glass er et al. in the context of CSPs and settle the major open question from that paper, finding a certain satisfaction problem on circuits to be decidable. This we prove using the decidability of Skolem Arithmetic. We continue by studying first-order expansions of Skolem Arithmetic without constants, (N;*), where * indicates multiplication, as CSPs. We find already here a rich landscape of problems with non-trivial instances that are in P as well as those that are NP-complete.

On query complexity measures and their relations for symmetric functions

Abstract:The main reason for query model's prominence in complexity theory and quantum computing is the presence of concrete lower bounding techniques: polynomial and adversary method. There have been considerable efforts to give lower bounds using these methods, and to compare/relate them with other measures based on the decision tree. We explore the value of these lower bounds on quantum query complexity and their relation with other decision tree based complexity measures for the class of symmetric functions, arguably one of the most natural and basic sets of Boolean functions. We show an explicit construction for the dual of the positive adversary method and also of the square root of private coin certificate game complexity for any total symmetric function. This shows that the two values can't be distinguished for any symmetric function. Additionally, we show that the recently introduced measure of spectral sensitivity gives the same value as both positive adversary and approximate degree for every total symmetric Boolean function. Further, we look at the quantum query complexity of Gap Majority, a partial symmetric function. It has gained importance recently in regard to understanding the composition of randomized query complexity. We characterize the quantum query complexity of Gap Majority and show a lower bound on noisy randomized query complexity (Ben-David and Blais, FOCS 2020) in terms of quantum query complexity. Finally, we study how large certificate complexity and block sensitivity can be as compared to sensitivity for symmetric functions (even up to constant factors). We show tight separations, i.e., give upper bounds on possible separations and construct functions achieving the same.

Complexity Classification of Complex-Weighted Counting Acyclic Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Abstract:We study the computational complexity of counting constraint satisfaction problems (#CSPs) whose constraints assign complex numbers to Boolean inputs when the corresponding constraint hypergraphs are acyclic. These problems are called acyclic #CSPs or succinctly, #ACSPs. We wish to determine the computational complexity of all such #ACSPs when arbitrary unary constraints are freely available. Depending on whether we further allow or disallow the free use of the specific constraint XOR (binary disequality), we present two complexity classifications of the #ACSPs according to the types of constraints used for the problems. When XOR is freely available, we first obtain a complete dichotomy classification. On the contrary, when XOR is not available for free, we then obtain a trichotomy classification. To deal with an acyclic nature of constraints in those classifications, we develop a new technical tool called acyclic-T-constructibility or AT-constructibility, and we exploit it to analyze a complexity upper bound of each #ACSPs.

Abstract:Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP) constitute a convenient way to capture many combinatorial problems. The general CSP is known to be NP-complete, but its complexity depends on a template, usually a set of relations, upon which they are constructed. Following this template, there exist tractable and intractable instances of CSPs. It has been proved that for each CSP problem over a given set of relations there exists a corresponding CSP problem over graphs of unary functions belonging to the same complexity class. In this short note we show a dichotomy theorem for every finite domain D of CSP built upon graphs of homogeneous co-Boolean functions, i.e., unary functions sharing the Boolean range {0, 1}.

The Complexity of Planar Boolean #CSP with Complex Weights

Abstract:We prove a complexity dichotomy theorem for symmetric complex-weighted Boolean #CSP when the constraint graph of the input must be planar. The problems that are #P-hard over general graphs but tractable over planar graphs are precisely those with a holographic reduction to matchgates. This generalizes a theorem of Cai, Lu, and Xia for the case of real weights. We also obtain a dichotomy theorem for a symmetric arity 4 signature with complex weights in the planar Holant framework, which we use in the proof of our #CSP dichotomy. In particular, we reduce the problem of evaluating the Tutte polynomial of a planar graph at the point (3,3) to counting the number of Eulerian orientations over planar 4-regular graphs to show the latter is #P-hard. This strengthens a theorem by Huang and Lu to the planar setting. Our proof techniques combine new ideas with refinements and extensions of existing techniques. These include planar pairings, the recursive unary construction, the anti-gadget technique, and pinning in the Hadamard basis.

A simplified proof of the CSP Dichotomy Conjecture and XY-symmetric operations

Abstract:We develop a new theory of strong subalgebras and linear congruences that are defined globally. Using this theory we provide a new proof of the correctness of Zhuk's algorithm for all tractable CSPs on a finite domain, and therefore a new simplified proof of the CSP Dichotomy Conjecture. Additionally, using the new theory we prove that composing a weak near-unanimity operation of an odd arity $n$ we can derive an $n$-ary operation that is symmetric on all two-element sets. Thus, CSP over a constraint language $\Gamma$ on a finite domain is tractable if and only if there exist infinitely many polymorphisms of $\Gamma$ that are symmetric on all two-element sets.

One-Way Communication Complexity of Partial XOR Functions

Abstract:Boolean function $F(x,y)$ for $x,y \in \{0,1\}^n$ is an XOR function if $F(x,y)=f(x\oplus y)$ for some function $f$ on $n$ input bits, where $\oplus$ is a bit-wise XOR. XOR functions are relevant in communication complexity, partially for allowing Fourier analytic technique. For total XOR functions it is known that deterministic communication complexity of $F$ is closely related to parity decision tree complexity of $f$. Montanaro and Osbourne (2009) observed that one-sided communication complexity $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F)$ of $F$ is exactly equal to nonadaptive parity decision tree complexity $NADT^{\oplus}(f)$ of $f$. Hatami et al. (2018) showed that unrestricted communication complexity of $F$ is polynomially related to parity decision tree complexity of $f$. We initiate the studies of a similar connection for partial functions. We show that in case of one-sided communication complexity whether these measures are equal, depends on the number of undefined inputs of $f$. On the one hand, if $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F)=t$ and $f$ is undefined on at most $O(\frac{2^{n-t}}{\sqrt{n-t}})$, then $NADT^{\oplus}(f)=t$. On the other hand, for a wide range of values of $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F)$ and $NADT^{\oplus}(f)$ (from constant to $n-2$) we provide partial functions for which $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F) < NADT^{\oplus}(f)$. In particular, we provide a function with an exponential gap between the two measures. Our separation results translate to the case of two-sided communication complexity as well, in particular showing that the result of Hatami et al. (2018) cannot be generalized to partial functions. Previous results for total functions heavily rely on Boolean Fourier analysis and the technique does not translate to partial functions. For the proofs of our results we build a linear algebraic framework instead. Separation results are proved through the reduction to covering codes.

On SAT representations of XOR constraints

Abstract:We study the representation of systems S of linear equations over the two-element field (aka xor- or parity-constraints) via conjunctive normal forms F (boolean clause-sets). First we consider the problem of finding an "arc-consistent" representation ("AC"), meaning that unit-clause propagation will fix all forced assignments for all possible instantiations of the xor-variables. Our main negative result is that there is no polysize AC-representation in general. On the positive side we show that finding such an AC-representation is fixed-parameter tractable (fpt) in the number of equations. Then we turn to a stronger criterion of representation, namely propagation completeness ("PC") --- while AC only covers the variables of S, now all the variables in F (the variables in S plus auxiliary variables) are considered for PC. We show that the standard translation actually yields a PC representation for one equation, but fails so for two equations (in fact arbitrarily badly). We show that with a more intelligent translation we can also easily compute a translation to PC for two equations. We conjecture that computing a representation in PC is fpt in the number of equations.

The Complexity of Symmetry Breaking Beyond Lex-Leader

Abstract:Symmetry breaking is a widely popular approach to enhance solvers in constraint programming, such as those for SAT or MIP. Symmetry breaking predicates (SBPs) typically impose an order on variables and single out the lexicographic leader (lex-leader) in each orbit of assignments. Although it is NP-hard to find complete lex-leader SBPs, incomplete lex-leader SBPs are widely used in practice. In this paper, we investigate the complexity of computing complete SBPs, lex-leader or otherwise, for SAT. Our main result proves a natural barrier for efficiently computing SBPs: efficient certification of graph non-isomorphism. Our results explain the difficulty of obtaining short SBPs for important CP problems, such as matrix-models with row-column symmetries and graph generation problems. Our results hold even when SBPs are allowed to introduce additional variables. We show polynomial upper bounds for breaking certain symmetry groups, namely automorphism groups of trees and wreath products of groups with efficient SBPs.
