Abstract:This article brings together a variety of ideas from critical theorists and practitioners in order to present a coherent critical approach for the field of conflict resolution. The historical roots of critical theory are briefly presented, along with critical practices that conflict resolution practitioners and theorists have developed. This leads to a discussion of critical strategies that are employed by conflict resolution practitioners who have aligned their practice and values with critical ideology. The potential place of critical theory and practice in the field of conflict resolution is stressed, highlighting new forms of practice and new roles for practitioners. As Alinsky wrote, “Conflict is the essential core of a free and open society” (1971, p. 12).

Abstract:This review addresses the manifestations and consequences of interpersonal cooperation and competition in interdependent, organizational settings. It challenges the applicability of Deutsch's (1949, 1973) game-based cooperation–competition theory. Rather than separate motives and separate behaviours having separate effects, cooperation and competition seem to refer to entwined motives and behaviours moderating each other's impact on dyadic or group effectiveness. The field of cooperation–competition in organizations is in need of a shift of perspective, as well as a revised research agenda including nation-referenced studies. Nation-referenced research places its results in the context of a country's cooperative and competitive cultural values and practices, with mean atmospheric temperature as a rough indicator of the degrees of cooperation and competition to be expected.

Abstract:This chapter provides an overview of key structural forces impacting conflict and conflict resolution in contemporary democratic society. It discusses four practical prescriptions for the conflict resolution and peacebuilding field, its analysts, and practitioners intended to help address these forces. These are, in brief, the impact of social structures on individual disputes; the use of analytical tools which allow disputants to assess the impact of these forces; support for social movements confronting structural problems; a focus on key issues and conflicts. Karl Marx’s adaptation of Hegelian dialectical idealism continues to be the most prominent of structural theories of conflict, shadowing each succeeding variation. An understanding of structural forces affecting contemporary democratic society begins with an appreciation of the impact of modernity on this society. The structures of global society make centralisation of governance, of work, and of social life unlikely. But community life must nonetheless offer individuals the affiliation they seek and the means to offer the same for others.

This paper embarks on an exploration of the intricate world of conflict resolution, specifically examining how pragmatic strategies manifest differently in Eastern and Western cultures. By delving into the patterns of speech acts and integrating the wisdom of esteemed scholars in cross-cultural communication, we aspire to offer a holistic perspective on how cultural contexts intricately mold conflict resolution strategies. In Eastern cultures, such as those influenced by Confucianism, indirect communication and face-saving strategies often take precedence in conflict resolution (Chen, 2023). Maintaining social harmony and avoiding public embarrassment play vital roles, steering individuals towards subtle cues and nonverbal communication. In contrast, Western cultures, rooted in individualism, tend to emphasize directness and assertiveness in communication (McConachy & Spencer-Oatey, 2021). Conflicts are addressed head-on, prioritizing clarity and resolution, even if it entails temporary discomfort. This exploration will illuminate the profound impact of cultural norms on the language used in conflict resolution, offering insights into how individuals from diverse backgrounds navigate conflicts. Through the lens of renowned scholars, we seek to enrich our understanding of the interplay between culture and conflict resolution, ultimately promoting more effective cross-cultural communication and harmonious interactions.

Abstract:The field of conflict resolution has long recognized that theory and practice are both vital in studying peace and conflict. But theory and practice often exist in separate worlds, each vying for privilege and recognition. However, many scholars and practitioners work in the theory–practice nexus, constantly negotiating as they move back and forth between the two domains. But even though tensions often exist between theory and practice, this essay proposes that they function together is a symbiotic relationship. Several ways are proposed for how a symbiotic approach to theory and research can be beneficial for the study and practice of conflict management, and the benefits of doing so are outlined. It is proposed that theory and practice come together in special ways in the classroom, and scholars and practitioners are encouraged to consider possibilities for promoting through teaching and pedagogy the coevolution of knowledge that is the essence of symbiosis.

Abstract:Conflict is an inherent aspect of social life, presenting itself in various forms, which can be categorized into five types: relationships, data, interests, structural, and values. Relationship conflicts involve communication issues, intense emotions, stereotypes, and retaliation. Resolving relationship conflicts requires displaying respect for the other person. Data conflicts arise from lack of information or incorrect interpretation. Conflicts of interest occur when needs or goals cannot be satisfied. Structural conflicts result from limited access to necessary resources or efficient work tools. Values conflicts involve differences in values and rules. Conflicts within organizations arise due to resource allocation, differing positions, goals, or values. Negotiations are widely considered the most effective means of resolving conflicts. Negotiations involve interpersonal communication aimed at achieving mutually satisfying agreements. Negotiation strategies can be classified into win-lose, lose-win, lose-lose, and win-win approaches. Win-win strategies prioritize mutual benefits, while winlose and lose-win strategies focus on individual gains. Avoidance and rivalry strategies are examples of lose-lose approaches. Mediation is a conflict resolution method involving a neutral third party. It is useful when legislative or normative acts prevent resolution, or when confrontation is costly or dangerous. Mediation relies on cooperative negotiation and is effective when parties desire to maintain a future relationship, value confidentiality, or wish to avoid court proceedings. However, mediation is not suitable for criminal conflicts or cases involving incapacitated parties. In mediation, the parties make the final decision under the guidance of the mediator. The mediator facilitates understanding, agreement, and reconciliation between the parties. They help identify potential solutions and conditions for resolving the dispute. Mediators do not assess evidence or make binding decisions but aim to promote mutual understanding and acceptable resolutions.

Abstract:People regularly encounter various types of conflict. Here, we ask if, and, if so, how, different types of conflict, from lab-based Stroop conflicts to everyday-life self-control or moral conflicts, are related to one other. We present a framework that assumes that action-goal representations are hierarchically organized, ranging from concrete actions to abstract goals. The framework's key assumption is that conflicts involving more abstract goals (e.g., self-control/moral conflict) are embedded in a more complex action space; thus, to resolve such conflicts, people need to consider more associated goals and actions. We discuss how differences in complexity impact conflict resolution mechanisms and the costs/benefits of resolving conflicts. Altogether, we offer a new way to conceptualize and analyze conflict regulation across different domains.

Abstract:Introduction: Although concern related to conflicts within health care teams has been discussed in the literature, most studies have focused on individuals' personal conflict management style identification or on managers resolving workplace conflicts between parties. The purpose of this review was to identify significant components in the field of conflict with particular attention to conceptual findings that may be integrated into understanding interprofessional health care team conflict and its resolution. Methods: A critical review of the conflict literature across many fields was undertaken using the method identified by Grant and Booth, incorporating literature-search, appraisal, synthesis, and analysis. Results: This critical review explored existing models and schools of thought to provide an overview of how conflict is conceptualized, its focus on interpersonal and workplace issues, team conflict application and training in team conflict resolution, and finally a summary of this review's contribution to interprofessional health care team conflict and its resolution. Conclusions: Team conflict is comprised of three forms-relationship, task, and process. When team building occurs that incorporates training in the use of an adapted constructive controversy approach, there is a greater opportunity to enhance the quality of a cooperative approach to patients' care planning. Training in team conflict resolution is needed as a key ingredient to ensure all team members can enhance the effectiveness and quality of interprofessional client-centered collaborative practice. This benefits not only the health providers in the team, but also their clients/patients who are recipients of their shared teamwork.

Abstract:This paper offers a multifaceted exploration of the intricate interplay between cultural dimensions and preferences in conflict resolution styles. It delves into the profound influence of cultural values on the choices individuals make when managing conflicts, enhancing our understanding of this complex relationship. Defining culture and conflict as central constructs, the paper investigates several key cultural dimensions within Hofstede's framework. It focuses on individualism and collectivism, high and low power distance, and high and low uncertainty avoidance. Few studies cover the research on power distance and conflict style preference, underscoring the importance of understanding how individuals choose styles that align with their cultural norms, whether maintaining low or high power distance within their own cultures. The study uncovers the correlation between different cultural types and conflict management styles. In cases of individualism, there is a preference for an avoidance style of conflict management, while collectivist cultures typically lean towards compromising and obliging conflict styles. In situations marked by high power distance, members of high power cultures are more likely to adopt an avoidance conflict style. The research holds significance for managing intercultural conflicts across various contexts, particularly in the realms of global governance, international relations, and multicultural team management. The findings provide a valuable reference for managers striving to navigate intercultural tensions and promote effective conflict resolution strategies aligned with cultural values. While this study offers valuable insights, it highlights the need for further in-depth research on additional cultural dimensions. This paper contributes to understanding the intricate relationship between culture and conflict resolution. It serves as a guide for analyzing preferences in intercultural conflicts, promoting conflict resolution management in multicultural projects, and advancing cross-cultural cooperation and understanding. Abstract:The lack of a clear conceptualization and operationalization of the construct of interpersonal conflict makes it difficult to compare the results of different studies and hinders the accumulation of knowledge in the conflict domain. Defining interpersonal conflict as a dynamic process that occurs between interdependent parties as they experience negative emotional reactions to perceived disagreements and interference with the attainment of their goals, the present paper presents a two‐dimensional framework and a typology of interpersonal conflict that incorporates previous conceptualizations of the construct. The first dimension of the framework identifies three properties generally associated with conflict situations: disagreement, negative emotion, and interference. The framework's second dimension identifies two targets of interpersonal conflict encountered in organizational settings: task and interpersonal relationship. Based on this framework, the paper highlights several shortcomings of current conceptualizations and operationalizations of interpersonal conflict in the organizational literature, and provides suggestions for their remedy.

Abstract:Code review consists of manual inspection, discussion, and judgment of source code by developers other than the code's author. Due to discussions around competing ideas and group decision-making processes, interpersonal conflicts during code reviews are expected. This study systematically investigates how developers perceive code review conflicts and addresses interpersonal conflicts during code reviews as a theoretical construct. Through the thematic analysis of interviews conducted with 22 developers, we confirm that conflicts during code reviews are commonplace, anticipated and seen as normal by developers. Even though conflicts do happen and carry a negative impact for the review, conflicts-if resolved constructively-can also create value and bring improvement. Moreover, the analysis provided insights on how strongly conflicts during code review and its context (i.e., code, developer, team, organization) are intertwined. Finally, there are aspects specific to code review conflicts that call for the research and application of customized conflict resolution and management techniques, some of which are discussed in this paper. Abstract:It is puzzling that links between Gandhian social philosophy and recent conflict resolution/negotiation literature, especially given the latter's Gandhian `flavour', have received so little scholarly attention. While there seems to be no direct causal link between the two bodies of knowledge, conflict resolution literature in the guise of modern problem-solving and win-win (as opposed to power-based and zerosum) approaches leading to integrative conflict resolution (as opposed to mere compromise and distributive outcomes) strongly echoes Gandhi's own writings and the analyses of some Gandhi scholars. This is especially true in the case of non-mainstream writings that see conflict resolution techniques as potentially being about more than the solution of immediate problems, that see a broader personal and societal transformation as the ultimate goal. This article explores these connections and argues that Gandhian satyagraha should be squarely located within conflict resolution discourse.

Abstract:Intractable conflicts are demoralizing. Beyond destabilizing the families, communities, or international regions in which they occur, they tend to perpetuate the very conditions of misery and hate that contributed to them in the first place. Although the common factors and processes associated with intractable conflicts have been identified through research, they represent an embarrassment of riches for theory construction. Thus, the current task in this area is integrating these diverse factors into an account that provides a coherent perspective yet allows for prediction and a basis for conflict resolution in specific conflict settings. We suggest that the perspective of dynamical systems provides such an account. This article outlines the key concepts and hypotheses associated with this approach. It is organized around a set of basic questions concerning intractable conflict for which the dynamical perspective offers fresh insight and testable propositions. The questions and answers are intended to provide readers with basic concepts and principles of complexity and dynamical systems that are useful for rethinking the nature of intractable conflict and the means by which such conflict can be transformed.

Students must be involved in solving concrete situations, it being necessary for them to become responsible and cooperative. Abstract:Empathy and empathy-related processes, such as compassion and personal distress, are recognized to play a key role in social relations. This review examines the role of empathy in interpersonal and intergroup relations, including intractable conflicts. Despite the limitations of empathy, there is growing evidence that empathy and compassion are associated with more prosocial behavior in interpersonal relations. Furthermore, empathy and compassion have been associated with more favorable attitudes and higher readiness for reconciliation across a range of intergroup settings. This review ends by summarizing recent evidence for the beneficial effects of compassion training on interpersonal and intergroup relations and by outlining new avenues for future research on how compassion training could reduce intergroup conflicts.
