Abstract:Understanding chemical modifications on proteins opens up further possibilities for research on rare diseases. This work proposes visualization approaches using two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) visual representations to analyze and gain insights into protein modifications. In this work, we present the application of Modie Viewer as an attempt to address the Bio+MedVis Challenge at IEEE VIS 2022.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to visualize the chemical modification of proteins more effectively to promote the research on rare diseases. Specifically, the paper proposes to use two - dimensional (2D) and three - dimensional (3D) visualization methods to analyze protein modifications, aiming to help researchers better understand the location where protein modifications occur and their distribution patterns in the protein sequence. Through these visualization tools, researchers can explore the characteristics of protein modifications more in - depth, especially the modification features related to rare diseases. The main challenges mentioned in the paper include the information overload problem in existing visualization methods, and how to improve the clarity and usability of visualization by improving visual encoding, using space, color coding and interaction design. For example, by optimizing the use of horizontal space, adopting a consistent color scheme, applying Hamming Distance for similarity ranking, etc., the paper proposes a series of improvement measures to reduce visual clutter and enable users to more easily identify the patterns and features of protein modifications.
