Abstract:Let G be a graph, and let k, r be nonnegative integers with k ≥ 2. A k-factor of G is a spanning subgraph F of G such that dF(x) = k for each x ∈ V (G), where dF(x) denotes the degree of x in F. For S ⊆ V (G), NG(S) = ∪x∊SNG(x). The binding number of G is defined by bind(G)=min{|NG(S)||S|:∅≠S⊂V(G),NG(S)≠V(G)}$\begin{array}{} (G) = {\rm{min }}\{ \frac{{|{N_G}(S)|}}{{|S|}}:\emptyset \ne S \subset V(G),{N_G}(S) \ne V(G)\} \end{array}$. In this paper, we obtain a binding number and neighborhood condition for a graph to have a k-factor excluding a given r-factor. This result is an extension of the previous results.

Abstract:Let G a graph of order n, and k >= 1 an integer. Let h: E(G) -> [0,1] be a function. If Sigma(e epsilon x)h(e) = k holds for each x is an element of V(G), we call G[F-h] a fractional k-factor of G with indicator functional h where F-h = {e is an element of E(G) : h(e) > 0}. In this paper, it is proved that G has a fractional k-factor including any given edge if G satisfies n >= 4k - 3, delta(G) >= k and and d(G)(x)+d(G)(y) >= n+ 1 for each pair of nonadjacent vertices x, y of G. Furthermore, it is showed that the result in this paper is best possible in some sense.

Abstract:Let $G$ denote a graph and $k\geq2$ be an integer. A $\{K_{1,1},K_{1,2},\ldots,K_{1,k},\mathcal{T}(2k+1)\}$-factor of $G$ is a spanning subgraph, whose every connected component is isomorphic to an element of $\{K_{1,1},K_{1,2},\ldots,K_{1,k},\mathcal{T}(2k+1)\}$, where $\mathcal{T}(2k+1)$ is one special family of tree. In this paper, we put forward some sufficient conditions for the existence of $\{K_{1,1},K_{1,2},\ldots,K_{1,k},\mathcal{T}(2k+1)\}$-factors in graphs. Furthermore, we construct some extremal graphs to show that the main results in this paper are best possible.

Abstract:Let a, b and k be three nonnegative integers with a >= 2 and b >= a(k + 1) + 2. A graph G is called a k-Hamiltonian graph if G - U contains a Hamiltonian cycle for every subset U subset of V (G) with vertical bar U vertical bar = k. An [a, b]-factor F of G is called a Hamiltonian [a, b] factor if F contains a Hamiltonian cycle. If G - U has a Hamiltonian [a, b]-factor for every subset U subset of V(G) with vertical bar U vertical bar = k, then we say that G admits a k-Hamiltonian [a, b] -factor. Suppose that G is a k Hamiltonian graph of order n with n >= a + k + 2. In this paper, it is proved that G includes a k-Hamiltonian [a, b]-factor if delta(G) >= a + k and t(G) >= a - 1 + (a - 1)(k + 1)/b - 2.

Abstract:Let π=(d1,...,dn) be a nonincreasing degree sequence with even n . In 1974, Kundu showed that if Dk(π)=(d1−k,...,dn−k) is graphic, then some realization of π has a k ‐factor. For r≤2 , Busch et al. and later Seacrest for r≤4 showed that if r≤k and Dk(π) is graphic, then there is a realization with a k ‐factor whose edges can be partitioned into a (k−r) ‐factor and r edge‐disjoint 1‐factors. We improve this to any r≤min{k+53,k} . In 1978, Brualdi and then Busch et al. in 2012, conjectured that r=k . The conjecture is still open for k≥6 . However, Busch et al. showed the conjecture is true when d1≤n2+1 or dn≥n2+k−2 . We explore this conjecture by first developing new tools that generalize edge‐exchanges. With these new tools, we can drop the assumption Dk(π) is graphic and show that if dd1−dn+k≥d1−dn+k−1, then π has a realization with k edge‐disjoint 1‐factors. From this we confirm the conjecture when dn≥d1+k−12 or when Dk(π) is graphic and d1≤max{n∕2+dn−k,(n+dn)∕2} .

An algorithmic version of the Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem

Abstract:A $K_r$-factor of a graph $G$ is a collection of vertex disjoint $r$-cliques covering $V(G)$. We prove the following algorithmic version of the classical Hajnal--Szemerédi Theorem in graph theory, when $r$ is considered as a constant. Given $r, c, n\in \mathbb{N}$ such that $n\in r\mathbb N$, let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $(1-1/r)n - c$. Then there is an algorithm with running time $2^{c^{O(1)}} n^{O(1)}$ that outputs either a $K_r$-factor of $G$ or a certificate showing that none exists, namely, this problem is fixed-parameter tractable in $c$. On the other hand, it is known that if $c = n^{\varepsilon}$ for fixed $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$, the problem is \texttt{NP-C}. We indeed establish characterization theorems for this problem, showing that the existence of a $K_r$-factor is equivalent to the existence of certain class of $K_r$-tilings of size $o(n)$, whose existence can be searched by the color-coding technique developed by Alon--Yuster--Zwick.

Abstract:Let a, b and k be three integers with b > a = 2 and k = 0, and let G be a graph. If G-U contains a Hamiltonian cycle for any U subset of V (G) with |U| = k, then G is called a k-Hamiltonian graph. An [a, b]-factor F of a graph G is Hamiltonian if F admits a Hamiltonian cycle. If G-U includes a Hamiltonian [a, b]-factor for every subset U. V (G) with |U| = k, then we say that G has a k-Hamiltonian [a, b]-factor. In this paper, we prove that if G is a k-Hamiltonian graph with 1 <= alpha(G) <= 4(b-2)(delta(G) - a - k + 1)/(a + k + 1)(2), then G admits a k-Hamiltonian [a, b]-factor. Furthermore, it is shown that this result is sharp.

Efficient Detection of Exchangeable Factors in Factor Graphs

Abstract:To allow for tractable probabilistic inference with respect to domain sizes, lifted probabilistic inference exploits symmetries in probabilistic graphical models. However, checking whether two factors encode equivalent semantics and hence are exchangeable is computationally expensive. In this paper, we efficiently solve the problem of detecting exchangeable factors in a factor graph. In particular, we introduce the detection of exchangeable factors (DEFT) algorithm, which allows us to drastically reduce the computational effort for checking whether two factors are exchangeable in practice. While previous approaches iterate all $O(n!)$ permutations of a factor's argument list in the worst case (where $n$ is the number of arguments of the factor), we prove that DEFT efficiently identifies restrictions to drastically reduce the number of permutations and validate the efficiency of DEFT in our empirical evaluation.

Integer Factorization Based on the Tile Assembly Model

Abstract:The problem of finding the prime factors of large composite numbers has always been of mathematical interest for centuries. With the advent of the public-key cryptosystem RSA, it is also of practical importance since the security of RSA system depends on the hardness of factoring the large number. The tile assembly model is a highly distributed parallel model of crystal growth. Here, we present an algorithmic tile assembly system that decides integer factorization, a well-known NP-hard problem. Firstly, a tile assembly system is developed to perform the improved binary Euclid's algorithm that computes the greatest common divisor between any two positive integers. On the basis of this assembly system, we then extend it to accomplish the integer factorization by adding a type of non-deterministic tiles. The major advantage of this algorithmic tile assembly system lies in the high information-storage, capacity and parallel-computation power of tile assembly. This method can factor any integer in a high probability only by use of a constant number of tile type sets.
An Algebraic-Geometry Approach to Prime Factorization

Abstract:New algorithms for prime factorization that outperform the existing ones or take advantage of particular properties of the prime factors can have a practical impact on present implementations of cryptographic algorithms that rely on the complexity of factorization. Currently used keys are chosen on the basis of the present algorithmic knowledge and, thus, can potentially be subject to future breaches. For this reason, it is worth to investigate new approaches which have the potentiality of giving a computational advantage. The problem has also relevance in quantum computation, as an efficient quantum algorithm for prime factorization already exists. Thus, better classical asymptotic complexity can provide a better understanding of the advantages offered by quantum computers. In this paper, we reduce the factorization problem to the search of points of parametrizable varieties, in particular curves, over finite fields. The varieties are required to have an arbitrarily large number of intersection points with some hypersurface over the base field. For a subexponential or poly- nomial factoring complexity, the number of parameters have to scale sublinearly in the space dimension n and the complexity of computing a point given the parameters has to be subexponential or polynomial, respectively. We outline a procedure for building these varieties, which is illustrated with two constructions. In one case, we show that there are varieties whose points can be evaluated efficiently given a number of parameters not greater than n/2. In the other case, the bound is dropped to n/3. Incidentally, the first construction resembles a kind of retro-causal model. Retro-causality is considered one possible explanation of quantum weirdness.

Efficient Detection of Commutative Factors in Factor Graphs

Abstract:Lifted probabilistic inference exploits symmetries in probabilistic graphical models to allow for tractable probabilistic inference with respect to domain sizes. To exploit symmetries in, e.g., factor graphs, it is crucial to identify commutative factors, i.e., factors having symmetries within themselves due to their arguments being exchangeable. The current state of the art to check whether a factor is commutative with respect to a subset of its arguments iterates over all possible subsets of the factor's arguments, i.e., $O(2^n)$ iterations for a factor with $n$ arguments in the worst case. In this paper, we efficiently solve the problem of detecting commutative factors in a factor graph. In particular, we introduce the detection of commutative factors (DECOR) algorithm, which allows us to drastically reduce the computational effort for checking whether a factor is commutative in practice. We prove that DECOR efficiently identifies restrictions to drastically reduce the number of required iterations and validate the efficiency of DECOR in our empirical evaluation.

Abstract:For integers $r,t\geq2$ and $n\geq1$ let $f_r(t,n)$ be the minimum, over all factorizations of the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph of order $n$ into $t$ factors $H_1,\dots,H_t$, of $\sum_{i=1}^tc(H_i)$ where $c(H_i)$ is the number of maximal cliques in $H_i$. It is known that $f_2(2,n)=n+1$; in fact, if $G$ is a graph of order $n$, then $c(G)+c(\overline G)\geq n+1$ with equality iff $\omega(G)+\alpha(G)=n+1$ where $\omega$ is the clique number and $\alpha$ the independence number. In this paper we investigate $f_r(t,n)$ when $r>2$ or $t>2$. We also characterize graphs $G$ of order $n$ with $c(G)+c(\overline G)=n+2$.

Berge-$k$-factors in tough hypergraphs

Abstract:Chvátal in 1973 introduced the concept of graph toughness and initiated the study of sufficient toughness conditions for the existence of hamiltonian cycles in graphs. Over the years, numerous results related to graph toughness have been proved. Notably, Enomoto, Jackson, Katerinis, and Saito (1985) established a renowned theorem stating that for every integer $k\ge 1$, any $k$-tough graph $G$ possesses a $k$-factor if $k |V(G)|$ is even and $|V(G)|\ge k+1$. In this paper, we initiate the study of toughness conditions for the existence of substructures in hypergraphs. Specifically, we extend the aforementioned result concerning $k$-factors in graphs to Berge-$k$-factors in hypergraphs. The proof of this extension presents a unique challenge due to the inherent non-uniformity of hypergraphs compared to graphs, and our proof techniques are of independent interest for similar investigations.

Maximally Edge-Connected Realizations and Kundu's $k$-factor Theorem

Abstract:A simple graph $G$ with edge-connectivity $\lambda(G)$ and minimum degree $\delta(G)$ is maximally edge connected if $\lambda(G)=\delta(G)$. In 1964, given a non-increasing degree sequence $\pi=(d_{1},\ldots,d_{n})$, Jack Edmonds showed that there is a realization $G$ of $\pi$ that is $k$-edge-connected if and only if $d_{n}\geq k$ with $\sum_{i=1}^{n}d_{i}\geq 2(n-1)$ when $d_{n}=1$. We strengthen Edmonds's result by showing that given a realization $G_{0}$ of $\pi$ if $Z_{0}$ is a spanning subgraph of $G_{0}$ with $\delta(Z_{0})\geq 1$ such that $|E(Z_{0})|\geq n-1$ when $\delta(G_{0})=1$, then there is a maximally edge-connected realization of $\pi$ with $G_{0}-E(Z_{0})$ as a subgraph. Our theorem tells us that there is a maximally edge-connected realization of $\pi$ that differs from $G_{0}$ by at most $n-1$ edges. For $\delta(G_{0})\geq 2$, if $G_{0}$ has a spanning forest with $c$ components, then our theorem says there is a maximally edge-connected realization that differs from $G_{0}$ by at most $n-c$ edges. As an application we combine our work with Kundu's $k$-factor Theorem to show there is a maximally edge-connected realization with a $(k_{1},\dots,k_{n})$-factor for $k\leq k_{i}\leq k+1$ and present a partial result to a conjecture that strengthens the regular case of Kundu's $k$-factor theorem.

Abstract:Under the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, any integer n > 1 can be uniquely written as a product of prime powers p a ; factoring each exponent a as a product of prime powers q b , and so on, one will obtain what is called the tower factorization of n . Here, given an integer n > 1, we study its height h ( n ), that is, the number of "floors" in its tower factorization. In particular, given a fixed integer k≥1 , we provide a formula for the density of the set of integers n with h ( n ) = k . This allows us to estimate the number of floors that a positive integer will have on average. We also show that there exist arbitrarily long sequences of consecutive integers with arbitrarily large heights.

Abstract:This thesis concerns the study of homogeneous factorisations of complete graphs with edge-transitive factors. A factorisation of a complete graph $K_n$ is a partition of its edges into disjoint classes. Each class of edges in a factorisation of $K_n$ corresponds to a spanning subgraph called a factor. If all the factors are isomorphic to one another, then a factorisation of $K_n$ is called an isomorphic factorisation. A homogeneous factorisation of a complete graph is an isomorphic factorisation where there exists a group $G$ which permutes the factors transitively, and a normal subgroup $M$ of $G$ such that each factor is $M$-vertex-transitive. If $M$ also acts edge-transitively on each factor, then a homogeneous factorisation of $K_n$ is called an edge-transitive homogeneous factorisation. The aim of this thesis is to study edge-transitive homogeneous factorisations of $K_n$. We achieve a nearly complete explicit classification except for the case where $G$ is an affine 2-homogeneous group of the form $Z_p^R \rtimes G_0$, where $G_0 \leq \Gamma L(1,p^R)$. In this case, we obtain necessary and sufficient arithmetic conditions on certain parameters for such factorisations to exist, and give a generic construction that specifies the homogeneous factorisation completely, given that the conditions on the parameters hold. Moreover, we give two constructions of infinite families of examples where we specify the parameters explicitly. In the second infinite family, the arc-transitive factors are generalisations of certain arc-transitive, self-complementary graphs constructed by Peisert in 2001.
