Abstract:In this article, we derive conditions for the existence of solutions to state-constrained continuity inclusions in Wasserstein spaces whose right-hand sides may be discontinuous in time. These latter are based on a fine investigation of the infinitesimal behaviour of the underlying reachable sets, through which we show that up to a negligible set of times, every admissible velocity of a continuity inclusion can be approximately realised as the metric derivative of a solution of the dynamics, and vice versa. Building on these results, we are able to establish necessary and sufficient geometric conditions for the viability and invariance of stationary and time-dependent constraint sets which involve a suitable notion of contingent cones in Wasserstein spaces, and presented in ascending order of generality. We then close the article by exhibiting two prototypical examples of constraints sets appearing in applications for which one can compute relevant subfamilies of contingent directions.

Abstract:We establish moduli of continuity and large increment properties for stationary increment Gaussian processes in order to study the path behavior of infinite series of independent Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. The existence and continuity of the latter infinite series type Gaussian processes are proved via showing that under a global condition their partial sum processes converge uniformly over finite intervals with probability one.

Abstract:In this article, we extend the foundations of the theory of differential inclusions in the space of compactly supported probability measures, introduced recently by the authors, to the setting of general Wasserstein spaces. In this context, we prove a novel existence result à la Peano for this class of dynamics under mere Carathéodory regularity assumptions. The latter is based on a natural, yet previously unexplored set-valued adaptation of the semi-discrete Euler scheme proposed by Filippov to study ordinary differential equations whose right-hand sides are measurable in the time variable. By leveraging some of the underlying methods along with new estimates for solutions of continuity equations, we also bring substantial improvements to the earlier versions of the Filippov estimates, compactness and relaxation properties of the solution sets of continuity inclusions, which are derived in the Cauchy-Lipschitz framework.

Abstract:We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for viability of evolution inclusions with locally monotone operators in the sense of Liu and Röckner [J. Funct. Anal., 259 (2010), pp. 2902-2922]. This allows us to prove wellposedness of lower semicontinuous solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations associated to the optimal control of evolution inclusions. Thereby, we generalize results in Bayraktar and Keller [J. Funct. Anal., 275 (2018), pp. 2096-2161] on Hamilton-Jacobi equations in infinite dimensions with monotone operators in several ways. First, we permit locally monotone operators. This extends the applicability of our theory to a wider class of equations such as Burgers' equations, reaction-diffusion equations, and 2D Navier-Stokes equations. Second, we allow state constraints. Third, we have uniqueness of viscosity solutions. Our results on viability and lower semicontinuous solutions are new even in the case of monotone operators.

Abstract:We consider the following question arising in the theory of differential inclusions: given an elliptic set $\Gamma$ and a Sobolev map $u$ whose gradient lies in the quasiconformal envelope of $\Gamma$ and touches $\Gamma$ on a set of positive measure, must $u$ be affine? We answer this question positively for a suitable notion of ellipticity, which for instance encompasses the case where $\Gamma \subset \mathbb R^{2\times 2}$ is an elliptic, smooth, closed curve. More precisely, we prove that the distance of $D u$ to $\Gamma$ satisfies the strong unique continuation property. As a by-product, we obtain new results for nonlinear Beltrami equations and recover known results for the reduced Beltrami equation and the Monge--Ampère equation: concerning the latter, we obtain a new proof of the $W^{2,1+\varepsilon}$-regularity for two-dimensional solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the differential inclusion in ℝ^N involving the p ( x )-Laplacian of the type [ -_p(x) u+V(x)|u|^p(x)-2u∈∂ F(x,u(x)), in ℝ^N, ( P) ] where p: ℝ^N →ℝ is Lipschitz continuous function satisfying some given assumptions. The approach used in this paper is the variational method for locally Lipschitz functions. Under suitable oscillatory assumptions on the potential F at zero or at infinity, we show the existence of infinitely many solutions of (P). We also establish a Bartsch-Wang type compact embedding theorem for variable exponent spaces.

We prove that, under suitable assumptions on the coefficients, the weak mild solution to the equation depends on the initial datum in a Lipschitz way. This implies that pathwise uniqueness holds true. Here, the presence of the operator $\Lambda$ plays a crucial role. In particular the conditions assumed on the coefficients cover the stochastic damped wave equation in dimension $1$ and the stochastic damped Euler--Bernoulli Beam equation upto dimension $3$ even in the hyperbolic case.

Abstract:This paper addresses a new class of generalized Bolza problems governed by nonconvex integro-differential inclusions with endpoint constraints on trajectories, where the integral terms are given in the general (with time-dependent integrands in the dynamics) Volterra form. We pursue here a threefold goal. First we construct well-posed approximations of continuous-time integro-differential systems by their discrete-time counterparts with showing that any feasible solution to the original system can be strongly approximated in the $W^{1,2}$-norm topology by piecewise-linear extensions of feasible discrete trajectories. This allows us to verify in turn the strong convergence of discrete optimal solutions to a prescribed local minimizer for the original problem. Facing intrinsic nonsmoothness of original integro-differential problem and its discrete approximations, we employ appropriate tools of generalized differentiation in variational analysis to derive necessary optimality conditions for discrete-time problems (which is our second goal) and finally accomplish our third goal to obtain necessary conditions for the original continuous-time problems by passing to the limit from discrete approximations. In this way we establish, in particular, a novel necessary optimality condition of the Volterra type, which is the crucial result for dynamic optimization of integro-differential inclusions.

Abstract:In this paper, we are interested in studying the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of differential inclusions governed by maximally monotone operators. In the case where the LaSalle's invariance principle is inconclusive, we provide a refined version of the invariance principle theorem. This result derives from the problem of locating the $\omega$-limit set of a bounded solution of the dynamic. In addition, we propose an extension of LaSalle's invariance principle, which allows us to give a sharper location of the $\omega$-limit set. The provided results are given in terms of nonsmooth Lyapunov pair-type functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a new infinite-dimensional linking theorem without (PS)-type assumptions. The new theorem needs a weaker linking geometry and produces bounded (PS) sequences. The abstract result will be applied to the study of the existence of solutions of the strongly indefinite partial differential systems. For the first application, we consider the systemΔu=uinΩ,Δv=vinΩ,∂u/∂η=Hv(x,u,v)on∂Ω,∂v/∂η=Hu(x,u,v)on∂Ω,where Ω is a bounded domain in RN with smooth boundary, ∂∂η is the outer normal derivative, H:∂Ω×R×R→R is a positive C1-function. On regularity and rigidity of $2\times 2$ differential inclusions into non-elliptic curves

Abstract:We study differential inclusions $Du\in \Pi$ in an open set $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^2$, where $\Pi\subset \mathbb R^{2\times 2}$ is a compact connected $C^2$ curve without rank-one connections, but non-elliptic: tangent lines to $\Pi$ may have rank-one connections, so that classical regularity and rigidity results do not apply. For a wide class of such curves $\Pi$, we show that $Du$ is locally Lipschitz outside a discrete set, and is rigidly characterized around each singularity. Moreover, in the partially elliptic case where at least one tangent line to $\Pi$ has no rank-one connections, or under some topological restrictions on the tangent bundle of $\Pi$, there are no singularities. This goes well beyond previously known particular cases related to Burgers' equation and to the Aviles-Giga functional. The key is the identification and appropriate use of a general underlying structure: an infinite family of conservation laws, called entropy productions in reference to the theory of scalar conservation laws.

Nonuniqueness of trajectories on a set of full measure for Sobolev vector fields

Abstract:In this paper, we resolve an important long-standing question of Alberti \cite{alberti2012generalized} that asks if there is a continuous vector field with bounded divergence and of class $W^{1, p}$ for some $p \geq 1$ such that the ODE with this vector field has nonunique trajectories on a set of initial conditions with positive Lebesgue measure? This question belongs to the realm of well-known DiPerna--Lions theory for Sobolev vector fields $W^{1, p}$. In this work, we design a divergence-free vector field in $W^{1, p}$ with $p < d$ such that the set of initial conditions for which trajectories are not unique is a set of full measure. The construction in this paper is quite explicit; we can write down the expression of the vector field at any point in time and space. Moreover, our vector field construction is novel. We build a vector field $\boldsymbol{u}$ and a corresponding flow map $X^{\boldsymbol{u}}$ such that after finite time $T > 0$, the flow map takes the whole domain $\mathbb{T}^d$ to a Cantor set $\mathcal{C}_\Phi$, i.e., $X^{\boldsymbol{u}}(T, \mathbb{T}^d) = \mathcal{C}_\Phi$ and the Hausdorff dimension of this Cantor set is strictly less than $d$. The flow map $X^{\boldsymbol{u}}$ constructed as such is not a regular Lagrangian flow. The nonuniqueness of trajectories on a full measure set is then deduced from the existence of the regular Lagrangian flow in the DiPerna--Lions theory.

Abstract:We present an integration condition ensuring that a stochastic differential equation dXt=μ(t,Xt)dt+σ(t,Xt)dBt, where μ and σ are sufficiently regular, has a solution of the form Xt=Z(t,Bt). By generalizing the integration condition we obtain a class of stochastic differential equations that again have a functional solution, now of the form Xt=Z(t,Yt), with Yt an Ito process. These integration conditions, which seem to be new, provide an a priori test for the existence of functional solutions. Then path-independence holds for the trajectories of the process. By Green's Theorem, it holds also when integrating along any piece-wise differentiable path in the plane. To determine Z at any point (t,x), we may start at the initial condition and follow a path that is first horizontal and then vertical. Then the value of Z can be determined by successively solving two ordinary differential equations. Due to a Lipschitz condition, this value is unique. The differential equations relate to an earlier path-dependent approach by H. Doss, which enables the expression of a stochastic integral in terms of a differential process.

Abstract:We prove an existence result for a large class of PDEs with a nonlinear Wasserstein gradient flow structure. We use the classical theory of Wasserstein gradient flow to derive an EDI formulation of our PDE and prove that under some integrability assumptions on the initial condition the PDE is satisfied in the sense of distributions.

Abstract:We introduce in this paper a strategy to prove gradient estimates for some infinite-dimensional diffusions on $L_2$-Wasserstein spaces. For a specific example of a diffusion on the $L_2$-Wasserstein space of the torus, we get a Bismut-Elworthy-Li formula up to a remainder term and deduce a gradient estimate with a rate of blow-up of order $\mathcal{O}(t^{-(2+\epsilon)})$.

A Linear Differential Inclusion for Contraction Analysis to Known Trajectories

Abstract:Infinitesimal contraction analysis provides exponential convergence rates between arbitrary pairs of trajectories of a system by studying the system's linearization. An essentially equivalent viewpoint arises through stability analysis of a linear differential inclusion (LDI) encompassing the incremental behavior of the system. In this note, we study contraction of a system to a particular known trajectory, deriving a new LDI characterizing the error between arbitrary trajectories and this known trajectory. As with classical contraction analysis, this new inclusion is constructed via first partial derivatives of the system's vector field, and contraction rates are obtained with familiar tools: uniform bounding of the logarithmic norm and LMI-based Lyapunov conditions. Our LDI is guaranteed to outperform a usual contraction analysis in two special circumstances: i) when the bound on the logarithmic norm arises from an interval overapproximation of the Jacobian matrix, and ii) when the norm considered is the $\ell_1$ norm. Finally, we demonstrate how the proposed approach strictly improves an existing framework for ellipsoidal reachable set computation.
