Abstract:We show that for every two cycles $C,D$, there exists $c>0$ such that if $G$ is both $C$-free and $\overline{D}$-free then $G$ has a clique or stable set of size at least $|G|^c$. ("$H$-free" means with no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$, and $\overline{D}$ denotes the complement graph of $D$.) Since the five-vertex cycle $C_5$ is isomorphic to its complement, this extends the earlier result that $C_5$ satisfies the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture. It also unifies and strengthens several other results. The results for cycles are special cases of results for subdivisions, as follows. Let $H,J$ be obtained from smaller graphs by subdividing every edge exactly twice. We will prove that there exists $c>0$ such that if $G$ is both $H$-free and $\overline{J}$-free then $G$ has a clique or stable set of size at least $|G|^c$. And the same holds if $H$ and/or $J$ is obtained from a graph bychoosing a forest $F$ and subdividing every edge not in $F$ at least five times. Our proof uses the framework of iterative sparsification developed in other papers of this series. Along the way, we will also give a short and simple proof of a celebrated result of Fox and Sudakov, that says that for all $H$, every $H$-free graph contains either a large stable set or a large complete bipartite subgraph.

Abstract:We study left-hand side restrictions of the induced subgraph isomorphism problem: Fixing a class , for given graphs G and arbitrary H we ask for induced subgraphs of H isomorphic to G.For the homomorphism problem this kind of restriction has been studied by Grohe and Dalmau, Kolaitis and Vardi for the decision problem and by Dalmau and Jonsson for its counting variant.We give a dichotomy result for both variants of the induced subgraph isomorphism problem. Under some assumption from parameterized complexity theory, these problems are solvable in polynomial time if and only if contains no arbitrarily large graphs.All classifications are given by means of parameterized complexity. The results are presented for arbitrary structures of bounded arity which implies, for example, analogous results for directed graphs.Furthermore, we show that no such dichotomy is possible in the sense of classical complexity. That is, if there are classes such that the induced subgraph isomorphism problem on is neither in nor -complete. This argument may be of independent interest, because it is applicable to various parameterized problems.

Abstract:The Erdős-Hajnal conjecture says that, for every graph $H$, there exists $c>0$ such that every $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices has a clique or stable set of size at least $n^c$. In this paper we are concerned with the case when $H$ is a path. The conjecture has been proved for paths with at most five vertices, but not for longer paths. We prove that the conjecture is ``nearly'' true for all paths: for every path $H$, all $H$-free graphs with $n$ vertices have cliques or stable sets of size at least $2^{(\log n)^{1-o(1)}}$.

Abstract:The hamiltonian problem is an important topic in structural graph theory, which is closely related to Four Color Problem. Hence lots of graph scholars are dedicated to this topic. There are many authors working for finding some sufficient conditions for hamiltonian property of graphs. Let G be a claw-free graph with n vertices and δ(G)≥3. In this paper, we show that if G has an induced cycle of length more than (4n – 2δ(G)–4)(δ(G)+2)−1, then G is hamiltonian. The result is best possible if δG is 3 or 4.

Abstract:When a small pattern graph does not occur inside a larger target graph, we can ask how to find "as much of the pattern as possible" inside the target graph. In general, this is known as the maximum common subgraph problem, which is much more computationally challenging in practice than subgraph isomorphism. We introduce a restricted alternative, where we ask if all but k vertices from the pattern can be found in the target graph. This allows for the development of slightly weakened forms of certain invariants from subgraph isomorphism which are based upon degree and number of paths. We show that when k is small, weakening the invariants still retains much of their effectiveness. We are then able to solve this problem on the standard problem instances used to benchmark subgraph isomorphism algorithms, despite these instances being too large for current maximum common subgraph algorithms to handle. Finally, by iteratively increasing k, we obtain an algorithm which is also competitive for the maximum common subgraph

Abstract:The independent domination number $i(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a maximal independent set of $G$, also called an $i(G)$-set. The $i$-graph of $G$, denoted $\mathscr{I}(G)$, is the graph whose vertices correspond to the $i(G)$-sets, and where two $i(G)$-sets are adjacent if and only if they differ by two adjacent vertices. Although not all graphs are $i$-graph realizable, that is, given a target graph $H$, there does not necessarily exist a source graph $G$ such that $H \cong \mathscr{I}(G)$, all graphs have $i$-graphs. We determine the $i$-graphs of paths and cycles and, in the case of cycles, discuss the Hamiltonicity of these $i$-graphs.

Counting Small Induced Subgraphs: Hardness via Fourier Analysis

Abstract:For a fixed graph property $\Phi$ and integer $k \geq 1$, the problem $\#\mathrm{IndSub}(\Phi,k)$ asks to count the induced $k$-vertex subgraphs satisfying $\Phi$ in an input graph $G$. If $\Phi$ is trivial on $k$-vertex graphs (i.e., if $\Phi$ contains either all or no $k$-vertex graphs), this problem is trivial. Otherwise we prove, among other results: If $\Phi$ is edge-monotone (i.e., closed under deleting edges), then $\#\mathrm{IndSub}(\Phi,k)$ cannot be solved in time $n^{o(k)}$ assuming ETH. This strengthens a result by Döring, Marx and Wellnitz [STOC 2024] that only ruled out an exponent of $o(\sqrt{\log k}/ \log \log k)$. Our results also hold when counting modulo fixed primes. If there is some fixed $\varepsilon > 0$ such that at most $(2-\varepsilon)^{\binom{k}{2}}$ graphs on $k$ vertices satisfy $\Phi$, then $\#\mathrm{IndSub}(\Phi,k)$ cannot be solved in time $n^{o(k/\sqrt{\log k})}$ assuming ETH. Our results hold even when each of the graphs in $\Phi$ may come with an arbitrary individual weight. This generalizes previous results for hereditary properties by Focke and Roth [SIAM J.\ Comput.\ 2024] up to a $\sqrt{\log k}$ factor in the exponent of the lower bound. If $\Phi$ only depends on the number of edges, then $\#\mathrm{IndSub}(\Phi,k)$ cannot be solved in time $n^{o(k)}$ assuming ETH. This improves on a lower bound by Roth, Schmitt and Wellnitz [FOCS 2020] that only ruled out an exponent of $o(k / \sqrt{\log k})$. In all cases, we also obtain $\mathsf{\#W[1]}$-hardness if $k$ is part of the input and the problem is parameterized by $k$. We also obtain lower bounds on the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension. Our results follow from relatively straightforward Fourier analysis, and our paper subsumes most of the known $\mathsf{\#W[1]}$-hardness results known in the area, often with tighter lower bounds under ETH.

Abstract:A set $S$ of isometric paths of a graph $G$ is "$v$-rooted", where $v$ is a vertex of $G$, if $v$ is one of the end-vertices of all the isometric paths in $S$. The isometric path complexity of a graph $G$, denoted by $ipco(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that there exists a vertex $v\in V(G)$ satisfying the following property: the vertices of any isometric path $P$ of $G$ can be covered by $k$ many $v$-rooted isometric paths. First, we provide an $O(n^2 m)$-time algorithm to compute the isometric path complexity of a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. Then we show that the isometric path complexity remains bounded for graphs in three seemingly unrelated graph classes, namely, hyperbolic graphs, (theta, prism, pyramid)-free graphs, and outerstring graphs. Hyperbolic graphs are extensively studied in Metric Graph Theory. The class of (theta, prism, pyramid)-free graphs are extensively studied in Structural Graph Theory, e.g. in the context of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem. The class of outerstring graphs is studied in Geometric Graph Theory and Computational Geometry. Our results also show that the distance functions of these (structurally) different graph classes are more similar than previously thought. There is a direct algorithmic consequence of having small isometric path complexity. Specifically, we show that if the isometric path complexity of a graph $G$ is bounded by a constant, then there exists a polynomial-time constant-factor approximation algorithm for ISOMETRIC PATH COVER, whose objective is to cover all vertices of a graph with a minimum number of isometric paths. This applies to all the above graph classes.

A coarse Erdős-Pósa theorem

Abstract:An \emph{induced packing} of cycles in a graph is a set of vertex-disjoint cycles with no edges between them. We generalise the classic Erdős-Pósa theorem to induced packings of cycles. More specifically, we show that there exists a function ${f(k) = \mathcal{O}(k \log k)}$ such that for every positive integer ${k}$, every graph $G$ contains either an induced packing of $k$ cycles or a set $X$ of at most~${f(k)}$ vertices such that the closed neighbourhood of $X$ intersects all cycles in $G$. Our proof is constructive and yields a polynomial-time algorithm finding either the induced packing of cycles or the set $X$. Furthermore, we show that for every positive integer ${d}$, if a graph $G$ does not contain two cycles at distance more than $d$, then $G$ contains sets $X_1,X_2\subseteq V(G)$ with $\lvert {X_1} \rvert \leq12(d+1)$ and $\lvert {X_2} \rvert \leq12$ such that after removing the ball of radius $2d$ around $X_1$ or the ball of radius $3d$ around $X_2$, the resulting graphs are forests. As a corollary, we prove that every graph with no $K_{1,t}$ induced subgraph and no induced packing of $k$ cycles has tree-independence number at most $\mathcal{O}(tk\log k)$, and one can construct a corresponding tree-decomposition in polynomial time. This resolves a special case of a conjecture of Dallard et al. (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2402.11222" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.11222">arXiv:2402.11222</a>), and implies that on such graphs, many NP-hard problems, such as Maximum Weight Independent Set, Maximum Weight Induced Matching, Graph Homomorphism, and Minimum Weight Feedback Vertex Set, are solvable in polynomial time. On the other hand, we show that the class of all graphs with no $K_{1,3}$ induced subgraph and no two cycles at distance more than $2$ has unbounded tree-independence number.

Unavoidable induced subgraphs in graphs with complete bipartite induced minors

Abstract:We prove that if a graph contains the complete bipartite graph $K_{134, 12}$ as an induced minor, then it contains a cycle of length at most~12 or a theta as an induced subgraph. With a longer and more technical proof, we prove that if a graph contains $K_{3, 4}$ as an induced minor, then it contains a triangle or a theta as an induced subgraph. Here, a \emph{theta} is a graph made of three internally vertex-disjoint chordless paths $P_1 = a \dots b$, $P_2 = a \dots b$, $P_3 = a \dots b$, each of length at least two, such that no edges exist between the paths except the three edges incident to $a$ and the three edges incident to $b$.

Finding Induced Subgraphs from Graphs with Small Mim-Width

Abstract:In the last decade, algorithmic frameworks based on a structural graph parameter called mim-width have been developed to solve generally NP-hard problems. However, it is known that the frameworks cannot be applied to the Clique problem, and the complexity status of many problems of finding dense induced subgraphs remains open when parameterized by mim-width. In this paper, we investigate the complexity of the problem of finding a maximum induced subgraph that satisfies prescribed properties from a given graph with small mim-width. We first give a meta-theorem implying that various induced subgraph problems are NP-hard for bounded mim-width graphs. Moreover, we show that some problems, including Clique and Induced Cluster Subgraph, remain NP-hard even for graphs with (linear) mim-width at most 2. In contrast to the intractability, we provide an algorithm that, given a graph and its branch decomposition with mim-width at most 1, solves Induced Cluster Subgraph in polynomial time. We emphasize that our algorithmic technique is applicable to other problems such as Induced Polar Subgraph and Induced Split Subgraph. Since a branch decomposition with mim-width at most 1 can be constructed in polynomial time for block graphs, interval graphs, permutation graphs, cographs, distance-hereditary graphs, convex graphs, and their complement graphs, our positive results reveal the polynomial-time solvability of various problems for these graph classes.

Hardness Amplification via Group Theory

Abstract:We employ techniques from group theory to show that, in many cases, counting problems on graphs are almost as hard to solve in a small number of instances as they are in all instances. Specifically, we show the following results. 1. Goldreich (2020) asks if, for every constant $\delta < 1 / 2$, there is an $\tilde{O} \left( n^2 \right)$-time randomized reduction from computing the number of $k$-cliques modulo $2$ with a success probability of greater than $2 / 3$ to computing the number of $k$-cliques modulo $2$ with an error probability of at most $\delta$. In this work, we show that for almost all choices of the $\delta 2^{n \choose 2}$ corrupt answers within the average-case solver, we have a reduction taking $\tilde{O} \left( n^2 \right)$-time and tolerating an error probability of $\delta$ in the average-case solver for any constant $\delta < 1 / 2$. By "almost all", we mean that if we choose, with equal probability, any subset $S \subset \{0,1\}^{n \choose 2}$ with $|S| = \delta2^{n \choose 2}$, then with a probability of $1-2^{-\Omega \left( n^2 \right)}$, we can use an average-case solver corrupt on $S$ to obtain a probabilistic algorithm. 2. Inspired by the work of Goldreich and Rothblum in FOCS 2018 to take the weighted versions of the graph counting problems, we prove that if the RETH is true, then for a prime $p = \Theta \left( 2^n \right)$, the problem of counting the number of unique Hamiltonian cycles modulo $p$ on $n$-vertex directed multigraphs and the problem of counting the number of unique half-cliques modulo $p$ on $n$-vertex undirected multigraphs, both require exponential time to compute correctly on even a $1 / 2^{n/\log n}$-fraction of instances. Meanwhile, simply printing $0$ on all inputs is correct on at least a $\Omega \left( 1 / 2^n \right)$-fraction of instances.

Abstract:For large n we determine exactly the maximum numbers of induced and subgraphs that a planar graph on n vertices can contain. We show that uniquely achieves this maximum in the case, and we identify the graphs which achieve the maximum in the case. This extends work in a paper by Hakimi and Schmeichel and a paper by Ghosh, Győri, Janzer, Paulos, Salia, and Zamora which together determine both maxima asymptotically.

Abstract:In the Maximum Common Induced Subgraph problem (henceforth MCIS), given two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, one looks for a graph with the maximum number of vertices being both an induced subgraph of $G_1$ and $G_2$. MCIS is among the most studied classical NP-hard problems. It remains NP-hard on many graph classes including forests. In this paper, we study the parameterized complexity of MCIS. As a generalization of \textsc{Clique}, it is W[1]-hard parameterized by the size of the solution. Being NP-hard even on forests, most structural parameterizations are intractable. One has to go as far as parameterizing by the size of the minimum vertex cover to get some tractability. Indeed, when parameterized by $k := \text{vc}(G_1)+\text{vc}(G_2)$ the sum of the vertex cover number of the two input graphs, the problem was shown to be fixed-parameter tractable, with an algorithm running in time $2^{O(k \log k)}$. We complement this result by showing that, unless the ETH fails, it cannot be solved in time $2^{o(k \log k)}$. This kind of tight lower bound has been shown for a few problems and parameters but, to the best of our knowledge, not for the vertex cover number. We also show that MCIS does not have a polynomial kernel when parameterized by $k$, unless $NP \subseteq \mathsf{coNP}/poly$. Finally, we study MCIS and its connected variant MCCIS on some special graph classes and with respect to other structural parameters.

Abstract:We study the time complexity of induced subgraph isomorphism problems where the pattern graph is fixed. The earliest known example of an improvement over trivial algorithms is by Itai and Rodeh (1978) who sped up triangle detection in graphs using fast matrix multiplication. This algorithm was generalized by Nešetřil and Poljak (1985) to speed up detection of k-cliques. Improved algorithms are known for certain small-sized patterns. For example, a linear-time algorithm is known for detecting length-4 paths. In this paper, we give the first pattern detection algorithm that improves upon Nešetřil and Poljak's algorithm for arbitrarily large pattern graphs (not cliques). The algorithm is obtained by reducing the induced subgraph isomorphism problem to the problem of detecting multilinear terms in constant-degree polynomials. We show that the same technique can be used to reduce the induced subgraph isomorphism problem of many pattern graphs to constructing arithmetic circuits computing homomorphism polynomials of these pattern graphs. Using this, we obtain faster combinatorial algorithms (algorithms that do not use fast matrix multiplication) for k-paths and k-cycles. We also obtain faster algorithms for 5-paths and 5-cycles that match the runtime for triangle detection. We show that these algorithms are expressible using polynomial families that we call graph pattern polynomial families. We then define a notion of reduction among these polynomials that allows us to compare the complexity of various pattern detection problems within this framework. For example, we show that the induced subgraph isomorphism polynomial for any pattern that contains a k-clique is harder than the induced subgraph isomorphism polynomial for k-clique. An analogue of this theorem is not known with respect to general algorithmic hardness.

Effective Bounds for Induced Size-Ramsey Numbers of Cycles

Abstract:The induced size-Ramsey number of a graph H is the smallest number of edges a (host) graph G can have such that for any k -coloring of its edges, there exists a monochromatic copy of H which is an induced subgraph of G . In 1995, in their seminal paper, Haxell, Kohayakawa and Łuczak showed that for cycles, these numbers are linear for any constant number of colours, i.e., for some . The constant C comes from the use of the regularity lemma, and has a tower type dependence on k . In this paper we significantly improve these bounds, showing that when n is even, thus obtaining only a polynomial dependence of C on k . We also prove for odd n , which almost matches the lower bound of . Finally, we show that the ordinary (non-induced) size-Ramsey number satisfies for odd n . This substantially improves the best previous result of , and is best possible, up to the implied constant in the exponent. To achieve our results, we present a new host graph construction which, roughly speaking, reduces our task to finding a cycle of approximate given length in a graph with local sparsity.

Improved upper bounds on even-cycle creating Hamilton paths

Abstract:We study the function $H_n(C_{2k})$, the maximum number of Hamilton paths such that the union of any pair of them contains $C_{2k}$ as a subgraph. We give upper bounds on this quantity for $k\ge 3$, improving results of Harcos and Soltész, and we show that if a conjecture of Ustimenko is true then one additionally obtains improved upper bounds for all $k\geq 6$. {We also give bounds on $H_n(K_{2,3})$ and $H_n(K_{2,4})$. In order to prove our results, we extend a theorem of Krivelevich which counts Hamilton cycles in $(n, d, \lambda)$-graphs to bipartite or irregular graphs, and then apply these results to generalized polygons and the constructions of Lubotzky-Phillips-Sarnak and Füredi.

Abstract:For every graph class {F}, let HomInd({F}) be the problem of deciding whether two given graphs are homomorphism-indistinguishable over {F}, i.e., for every graph F in {F}, the number hom(F, G) of homomorphisms from F to G equals the corresponding number hom(F, H) for H. For several natural graph classes (such as paths, trees, bounded treewidth graphs), homomorphism-indistinguishability over the class has an efficient structural characterization, resulting in polynomial time solvability [H. Dell et al., 2018]. In particular, it is known that two non-isomorphic graphs are homomorphism-indistinguishable over the class {T}_k of graphs of treewidth k if and only if they are not distinguished by k-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm, a central heuristic for isomorphism testing: this characterization implies a polynomial time algorithm for HomInd({T}_k), for every fixed k in N. In this paper, we show that there is a polynomial-time-decidable class {F} of undirected graphs of bounded treewidth such that HomInd({F}) is undecidable. Our second hardness result concerns the class {K} of complete graphs. We show that HomInd({K}) is co-NP-hard, and in fact, we show completeness for the class C_=P (under P-time Turing reductions). On the algorithmic side, we show that HomInd({P}) can be solved in polynomial time for the class {P} of directed paths. We end with a brief study of two variants of the HomInd({F}) problem: (a) the problem of lexographic-comparison of homomorphism numbers of two graphs, and (b) the problem of computing certain distance-measures (defined via homomorphism numbers) between two graphs.

Abstract:For a positive integer $k$ and a graph $H$ on $k$ vertices, we are interested in the inducibility of $H$, denoted $\mathrm{ind}(H)$, which is defined as the maximum possible probability that choosing $k$ vertices uniformly at random from a large graph $G$, they induce a copy of $H$. It follows from the resolved Edge-statistics conjecture that if $H \not \in \{K_k, \bar K_k\}$, then $\mathrm{ind}(H) \leq 1 / e + o_k(1)$. Equality holds for the star graph $K_{1, k-1}$, the graph with a single edge on $k$ vertices and their complements. We prove that for all other graphs $H$, we have $\mathrm{ind}(H) \leq c + o_k(1)$ for an absolute constant $c < 1 / e$. Moreover, we explicitly characterize all graphs with inducibility bounded away from zero. Namely, we show that this is the class of graphs $H$ for which there is a set $V_0 \subseteq V(H)$ of bounded size with the property that all permutations of $V(H) \backslash V_0$ extend to an automorphism of $H$.
