Abstract:We study averages involving the Jacobi quadratic symbol $(\frac{n}{m})$ in regions where the product $mn$ is bounded by a large parameter. We show that these averages exhibit cancellation whenever the summation is restricted to square-free integers bounded away from the axes.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a lot of progress in obtaining non-trivial bounds for bilinear forms of Kloosterman sums in Z / m Z for arbitrary integers m. These results have been motivated by a wide variety of applications, such as improved asymptotic formulas for moments of L-functions. However, there has been very little work done in this area in the setting of rational function fields over finite fields. We remedy this and provide a number of new non-trivial bounds for bilinear forms of Kloosterman and Gauss sums in this setting, based on new bounds on the number of solutions to certain modular congruences in F q [ T ] . These improve upon some results of Macourt and Shparlinski (2019).

Abstract:Let $J_{1,m}(N)$ be the vector space of Jacobi forms of weight one and index $m$ on $\Gamma_0(N)$. In 1985, Skoruppa proved that $J_{1,m}(1)=0$ for all $m$. In 2007, Ibukiyama and Skoruppa proved that $J_{1,m}(N)=0$ for all $m$ and all squarefree $N$ with $\mathrm{gcd}(m,N)=1$. This paper aims to extend their results. We determine all levels $N$ separately, such that $J_{1,m}(N)=0$ for all $m$; or $J_{1,m}(N)=0$ for all $m$ with $\mathrm{gcd}(m,N)=1$. We also establish explicit dimension formulas of $J_{1,m}(N)$ when $m$ and $N$ are relatively prime or $m$ is squarefree. These results are obtained by refining Skoruppa's method and analyzing local invariants of Weil representations. As applications, we prove the vanishing of Siegel modular forms of degree two and weight one in some cases.

Abstract:Jacobi forms can be considered as vector valued modular forms, and Jacobi forms of critical weight correspond to vector valued modular forms of weight $\frac12$. Since the only modular forms of weight $\frac12$ on congruence subgroups of $\SL$ are theta series the theory of Jacobi forms of critical weight is intimately related to the theory of Weil representations of finite quadratic modules. This article explains this relation in detail, gives an account of various facts about Weil representations which are useful in this context, and it gives some applications of the theory developed herein by proving various vanishing theorems and by proving a conjecture on Jacobi forms of weight one on $\SL$ with character.

Abstract:The main purpose of this article is to study the problem of calculating the 2 m th power mean of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums, and using the analytic method and an interesting combinatorial identity to give a sharp asymptotic formula for the 2 m th power mean. Thus, a new simple proof of this existing result [N. Bag, A. Rojas-León, and W. P. Zhang, On some conjectures on generalized quadratic Gauss sums and related problems , Finite Fields Appl. 86 (2023), 10213] is provided.

Abstract:The Beauville-Fujiki relation for a compact Hyperkähler manifold $X$ of dimension $2k$ allows to equip the symmetric power $\text{Sym}^kH^2(X)$ with a symmetric bilinear form induced by the Beauville-Bogomolov form. We study some of its properties and compare it to the form given by the Poincaré pairing. The construction generalizes to a definition for an induced symmetric bilinear form on the symmetric power of any free module equipped with a symmetric bilinear form. We point out how the situation is related to the theory of orthogonal polynomials in several variables. Finally, we construct a basis of homogeneous polynomials that are orthogonal when integrated over the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$, or equivalently, over $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ with a Gaussian kernel.

Abstract:For a complex polynomial $D(t)$ of even degree, one may define the continued fraction of $\sqrt{D(t)}$. This was found relevant already by Abel in 1826, and later by Chebyshev, concerning integration of (hyperelliptic) differentials; they realized that, contrary to the classical case of square roots of positive integers treated by Lagrange and Galois, we do not always have pre-periodicity of the partial quotients. In this paper we shall prove that, however, a correct analogue of Lagrange's theorem still exists in full generality: pre-periodicity of the {\it degrees} of the partial quotients always holds. Apparently, this fact was never noted before. This also yields a corresponding formula for the degrees of the convergents, for which we shall prove new bounds which are generally best possible (halving the known ones). We shall further study other aspects of the continued fraction, like the growth of the heights of partial quotients. Throughout, some striking phenomena appear, related to the geometry of (generalized) Hyperelliptic Jacobians. Another conclusion central in this paper concerns the poles of the convergents: there can be only finitely many rational ones which occur infinitely many times. (This is crucial for applications to a function field version of a question of McMullen.) Our methods rely, among other things, on linking Padé approximants and convergents with divisor relations in generalized Jacobians; this shall allow an application of a version for algebraic groups, proved in this paper, of the Skolem-Mahler-Lech theorem.

Abstract:Let $q=p^n$ be an odd prime power and let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements. Let $\widehat{\mathbb{F}_q^{\times}}$ be the group of all multiplicative characters of $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\chi$ be a generator of $\widehat{\mathbb{F}_q^{\times}}$. In this paper, we investigate arithmetic properties of certain cyclotomic matrices involving nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. For example, let $s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_{(q-1)/2}$ be all nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Abstract:We study non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_{1}$ by means of vector-valued and matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials. The interpretation as matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials yields a new expression of the non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_1$ in terms of the symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_{1}$. In this interpretation, the Cherednik operator, that has the non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials as eigenfunctions, corresponds to two shift operators for the symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_{1}$. We show that the non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_{1}$ with so-called geometric root multiplicities, interpreted as vector-valued polynomials, can be identified with spherical functions on the sphere $S^{2m+1}=\mathrm{Spin}(2m+2)/\mathrm{Spin}(2m+1)$ associated with the fundamental spin-representation of $\mathrm{Spin}(2m+1)$. The Cherednik operator corresponds to the Dirac operator for the spinors on $S^{2m+1}$ in this interpretation.

Abstract:We study the regularity of the law of a quadratic form $Q(X,X)$, evaluated in a sequence $X = (X_{i})$ of independent and identically distributed random variables, when $X_{1}$ can be expressed as a sufficiently smooth function of a Gaussian field. This setting encompasses a large class of important and frequently used distributions, such as, among others, Gaussian, Beta, for instance uniform, Gamma distributions, or else any polynomial transform of them. Let us present an emblematic application. Take $X = (X_{i})$ a sequence of independent and identically distributed centered random variables, with unit variance, following such distribution. Consider also $(Q_{n})$ a sequence of quadratic forms, with associated symmetric Hilbert--Schmidt operators $(\mathsf{A}^{(n)})$. Assume that $\operatorname{Tr}[ (\mathsf{A}^{(n)})^{2} ] = 1/2$, $\mathsf{A}^{(n)}_{ii} =0$, and the spectral radius of $\mathsf{A}^{(n)}$ tends to $0$. Then, $(Q_{n}(X))$ converges in a strong sense to the standard Gaussian distribution. Namely, all derivatives of the densities, which are well-defined for $n$ sufficiently large, converge uniformly on $\mathbb{R}$ to the corresponding derivatives of the standard Gaussian density. While classical methods, from Malliavin calculus or $\Gamma$-calculus, generally consist in bounding negative moments of the so-called \emph{carré du champ} operator $\Gamma(Q(X),Q(X))$, we provide a new paradigm through a second-order criterion involving the eigenvalues of a Hessian-type matrix related to $Q(X)$. This Hessian is built by iterating twice a tailor-made gradient, the \emph{sharp operator} $\sharp$, obtained via a Gaussian representation of the carré du champ. We believe that this method, recently developed by the authors in the current paper and in their companion paper [AoP 52 n°3 (2024)] , is of independent interest and could prove useful in other settings.

Double summation addition theorems for Jacobi functions of the first and second kind

Abstract:In this paper we review and derive hyperbolic and trigonometric double summation addition theorems for Jacobi functions of the first and second kind. In connection with these addition theorems, we perform a full analysis of the relation between symmetric, antisymmetric and odd-half-integer parameter values for the Jacobi functions with certain Gauss hypergeometric functions which satisfy a quadratic transformation, including associated Legendre, Gegenbauer and Ferrers functions of the first and second kind. We also introduce Olver normalizations of the Jacobi functions which are particularly useful in the derivation of expansion formulas when the parameters are integers. We introduce an application of the addition theorems for the Jacobi functions of the second kind to separated eigenfunction expansions of a fundamental solution of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the compact and noncompact rank one symmetric spaces.

Abstract:The classical quadratic Gauss sum can be thought of as an exponential sum attached to a quadratic form on a cyclic group. We introduce an equivariant version of Gauss sum for arbitrary finite quadratic forms, which is an exponential sum twisted by the action of the orthogonal group. We prove that simple arithmetic formulae hold for some basic classes of quadratic forms. In application, such invariant appears in the dimension formula for certain vector-valued modular forms.

Abstract:We generalize techniques by Coskun, Riedl, and Yeong, and obtain an almost optimal bound on the degree for the algebraic hyperbolicity of very general hypersurfaces in homogeneous varieties. As examples, we work out the cases of very general hypersurfaces in products of Grassmannians, orthogonal and symplectic Grassmannians, and flag varieties.

General Berndt-Type Integrals and Series Associated with Jacobi Elliptic Functions

Abstract:In this paper, we prove two structural theorems on the general Berndt-type integrals with the denominator having arbitrary positive degrees by contour integrations involving hyperbolic and trigonometric functions, and hyperbolic sums associated with Jacobi elliptic functions. We first establish explicit relations between these integrals and four classes of hyperbolic sums. Then, using our previous results on hyperbolic series and applying the matrix method from linear algebra, we compute explicitly several general hyperbolic sums and their higher derivatives. These enable us to express two families of general Berndt-type integrals as polynomials in $\Gamma^4(1/4)$ and $\pi^{-1}$ with rational coefficients, where $\Gamma$ is the Euler gamma function. At the end of the paper, we provide some conjectures of general Berndt-type integrals.

Local Euler characteristics of $A_n$-singularities and their application to hyperbolicity

Abstract:Wahl's local Euler characteristic measures the local contributions of a singularity to the usual Euler characteristic of a sheaf. Using tools from toric geometry, we study the local Euler characteristic of sheaves of symmetric differentials for isolated surface singularities of type $A_n$. We prove an explicit formula for the local Euler characteristic of the $m$th symmetric power of the cotangent bundle; this is a quasi-polynomial in $m$ of period $n+1$. We also express the components of the local Euler characteristic as a count of lattice points in a non-convex polyhedron, again showing it is a quasi-polynomial. We apply our computations to obtain new examples of algebraic quasi-hyperbolic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of low degree. We show that an explicit family of surfaces with many singularities constructed by Labs has no genus $0$ curves for the members of degree at least $8$ and no curves of genus $0$ or $1$ for degree at least $10$.

The Jacobi operator of some special minimal hypersurfaces

Abstract:In this work we discuss stability and nondegeneracy properties of some special families of minimal hypersurfaces embedded in $\mathbb{R}^m\times \mathbb{R}^n$ with $m,n\geq 2$. These hypersurfaces are asymptotic at infinity to a fixed Lawson cone $C_{m,n}$. In the case $m+n\ge 8$, we show that such hypersurfaces are strictly stable and we provide a full classification of their bounded Jacobi fields, which in turn allows us to prove the non-degeneracy of such surfaces. In the case $m+n\le 7$, we prove that such hypersurfaces have infinite Morse index.

Abstract:We prove bounds in the strict local $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ range for trilinear Fourier multiplier forms with a $d$-dimensional singular subspace. Given a fixed parameter $K \ge 1$, we treat multipliers with non-degenerate singularity that are push-forwards by $K$-quasiconformal matrices of suitable symbols. As particular applications, our result recovers the uniform bounds for the one-dimensional bilinear Hilbert transforms in the strict local $L^{2}$ range, and it implies the uniform bounds for two-dimensional bilinear Beurling transforms, which are new, in the same range.

Abstract:In this paper we derive many infinite families of explicit exact formulas involving either squares or triangular numbers, two of which generalize Jacobi's 4 and 8 squares identities to 4n^2 or 4n(n+1) squares, respectively, without using cusp forms. In fact, we similarly generalize to infinite families all of Jacobi's explicitly stated degree 2, 4, 6, 8 Lambert series expansions of classical theta functions. In addition, we extend Jacobi's special analysis of 2 squares, 2 triangles, 6 squares, 6 triangles to 12 squares, 12 triangles, 20 squares, 20 triangles, respectively. These results, depending on new expansions for powers of various products of classical theta functions, arise in the setting of Jacobi elliptic functions, associated continued fractions, regular C-fractions, Hankel or Turanian determinants, Fourier series, Lambert series, inclusion/exclusion, Laplace expansion formula for determinants, and Schur functions. The Schur function form of these infinite families of identities are analogous to the eta-function identities of Macdonald. Moreover, the powers 4n(n+1), 2n^2+n, 2n^2-n that appear in Macdonald's work also arise at appropriate places in our analysis. A special case of our general methods yields a proof of the two Kac--Wakimoto conjectured identities involving representing a positive integer by sums of 4n^2 or 4n(n+1) triangular numbers, respectively.
