Abstract:Deep learning has been widely employed to solve the Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) image reconstruction problem. Most existing physical model-based and learning-based approaches focus on 2D EIT image reconstruction. However, when they are directly extended to the 3D domain, the reconstruction performance in terms of image quality and noise robustness is hardly guaranteed mainly due to the significant increase in dimensionality. This paper presents a learning-based approach for 3D EIT image reconstruction, which is named Transposed convolution with Neurons Network (TN-Net). Simulation and experimental results show the superior performance and generalization ability of TN-Net compared with prevailing 3D EIT image reconstruction algorithms.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the challenges in 3D electrical impedance tomography (3D EIT) image reconstruction. Specifically, although deep learning has been widely applied to solve the 2D EIT image reconstruction problem, when these methods are directly extended to the 3D field, due to the significant increase in dimensions, it is difficult to ensure the image quality and noise - resistance performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a deep - learning - based method - Transposed convolution with Neurons Network (TN - Net), aiming to improve the quality and noise - resistance ability of 3D EIT image reconstruction while reducing the demand for computational resources. The main contributions of the paper include: 1. Proposing a new network architecture TN - Net for 3D EIT image reconstruction. By introducing a decoder for structure learning, the non - linearity of the inverse problem is solved, and the subsequent transposed convolution layers further improve the quality of 3D reconstructed images. 2. Constructing a 3D EIT data set containing 21,135 randomly generated multi - object and multi - conductivity - level data. 3. Verifying TN - Net using simulation and experimental data, proving that it is superior to existing reconstruction algorithms in terms of computational efficiency, noise - resistance ability and generalization ability.
