Abstract:In this paper, we present 3D high resolution radar imaging at millimeter-Wave (mmWave) frequencies by means of a combination of virtual Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) Radars and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) which results in a compact, low-cost, and high-speed 3D mmWave imagery system with low complexity.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the problem of achieving high-resolution 3D radar imaging in the millimeter-wave band by combining virtual Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar systems with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology. Specifically, the paper aims to: 1. **Improve resolution**: Create a larger aperture in the horizontal direction using synthetic aperture technology to achieve higher angular resolution. In the vertical direction, use a sparse MIMO array to increase the aperture size. 2. **Reduce complexity**: Use virtual MIMO technology to virtually increase the number of antennas in the array with a limited number of antennas by employing methods such as Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), thereby reducing system complexity and cost. 3. **Increase speed**: Compared to traditional SAR systems, combining virtual MIMO technology allows for faster data acquisition, thereby increasing imaging speed. The paper details the system model and proposes an image reconstruction algorithm based on 3D Fourier transform. Finally, the effectiveness of the method is validated through experiments. This combined technology can achieve a compact, low-cost, and high-speed 3D millimeter-wave imaging system suitable for generating high-resolution radar images.
