Abstract:In this paper, we classify the $m$-ovoids of finite classical polar spaces that admit a transitive automorphism group acting irreducibly on the ambient vector space. In particular, we obtain several new infinite families of transitive $m$-ovoids.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider finite flag-transitive affine planes with a solvable automorphism group. Under a mild number-theoretic condition involving the order and dimension of the plane, the translation complement must contain a linear cyclic subgroup that either is transitive or has two equal-sized orbits on the line at infinity. We develop a new approach to the study of such planes by associating them with planar functions and permutation polynomials in the odd order and even order case respectively. In the odd order case, we characterize the Kantor–Suetake family by using Menichetti's classification of generalized twisted fields and Blokhuis, Lavrauw and Ball's classification of rank two commutative semifields. In the even order case, we develop a technique to study permutation polynomials of DO type by quadratic forms and characterize such planes that have dimensions up to four over their kernels.
Some non-existence results on $m$-ovoids in classical polar spaces

Abstract:In this paper we develop non-existence results for $m$-ovoids in the classical polar spaces $Q^-(2r+1,q), W(2r-1,q)$ and $H(2r,q^2)$ for $r>2$. In [4] a lower bound on $m$ for the existence of $m$-ovoids of $H(4,q^2)$ is found by using the connection between $m$-ovoids, two-character sets, and strongly regular graphs. This approach is generalized in [3] for the polar spaces $Q^-(2r+1,q), W(2r-1,q)$ and $H(2r,q^2)$, $r>2$. In [1] an improvement for the particular case $H(4,q^2)$ is obtained by exploiting the algebraic structure of the collinearity graph, and using the characterization of an $m$-ovoid as an intruiging set. In this paper, we use an approach based on geometrical and combinatorial arguments, inspired by the results from [10], to improve the bounds from [3].

Abstract: We construct a family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$, the parabolic quadric of $\textup{PG}(4,q)$, for $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$. The existence of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$ was only known for $q=3, 7,$ or $11$. Our construction provides the first infinite family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$.Along the way, we also give a construction of $\frac{q+1}{2}$-ovoids in $Q(4,q)$ for $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$.

Abstract:This paper is an exploration of the faithful transitive permutation representations of the orientation-preserving automorphisms groups of highly symmetric toroidal maps and hypermaps. The main theorems of this paper give a list of all possible degrees of these specific groups. This extends prior accomplishments of the authors, wherein their focus was confined to the study of the automorphisms groups of toroidal regular maps and hypermaps. In addition the authors bring out the recently developed {\sc GAP} package {\sc corefreesub} that can be used to find faithful transitive permutation representations of any group. With the aid of this powerful tool, the authors show how Schreier coset graphs of the automorphism groups of toroidal maps and hypermaps can be easily constructed.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct an infinite family of $\frac{q-1}{2}$-ovoids of the generalized quadrangle $Q(4,q)$, for $q\equiv 1 (\text{mod}\ 4)$ and $q>5$. Together with the examples given by Bamberg et al. and constructions provided by Feng et al., this establishes the existence of $\frac{q-1}{2}$-ovoids in $Q(4,q)$ for each odd prime power $q$.

Abstract:Suppose that $q$ is a prime power such that $q\equiv~2\pmod{3}$. By using Kantor's model of $Q^+(7,q)$, we study the orbit structure of the action of $\textup{PSU}_3(q)$ on the polar space $Q^+(7,q)$ and obtain new $(q^2+q)$- and $q^3$-ovoids with an automorphism group $\textup{PSU}_3(q)$. In this way, we determine all $\textup{PSU}_3(q)$-invariant intriguing sets of $Q^+(7,q)$. It turns out that such an intriguing set is either the unitary ovoid, one of the two new $m$-ovoids, or their complements.

Abstract:We give a lattice-theoretic classification of non-symplectic automorphisms of prime order of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds of OG10 type. We determine which automorphisms are induced by a non-symplectic automorphism of prime order of a cubic fourfold on the associated LSV manifolds, giving a geometric and lattice-theoretic description of the algebraic and transcendental lattices of the cubic fourfold. As an application we discuss the rationality conjecture for a general cubic fourfold with a non-symplectic automorphism of prime order.

Abstract:We investigate what we call generalized ovoids, that is families of totally isotropic subspaces of finite classical polar spaces such that each maximal totally isotropic subspace contains precisely one member of that family. This is a generalization of ovoids in polar spaces as well as the natural $q$-analog of a subcube partition of the hypercube (which can be seen as a polar space with $q=1$). Our main result proves that a generalized ovoid of $k$-spaces in polar spaces of large rank does not exist. More precisely, for $q=p^h$, $p$ prime, and some positive integer $k$, a generalized ovoid of $k$-spaces in a polar space $\mathcal{P}$ with rank $r \geq r_0(k, p)$ in a vector space $V(n,q)$ does not exist.

Ramsey numbers and extremal structures in polar spaces

Abstract:We use $p$-rank bounds on partial ovoids and the classical bounds on Ramsey numbers to obtain upper bounds on the size of partial $m$-ovoids in finite classical polar spaces. These bounds imply non-existence of $m$-ovoids for new infinite families of polar spaces. We also give a probabilistic construction of large partial $m$-ovoids when $m$ grows linearly with the rank of the polar space. In the special case of the symplectic spaces over the binary field, we prove an equivalence between partial $m$-ovoids and a generalisation of Oddtown families from extremal set theory that has been studied under the name of $m$-nearly orthogonal sets. We give a new construction for large partial $2$-ovoids in these spaces and thus $2$-nearly orthogonal sets over the binary field. This construction uses triangle-free graphs associated to certain BCH codes whose complements have low $2$-rank and it gives an asymptotic improvement over the previous best construction. We give another construction of triangle-free graphs using a binary projective cap, which has low complementary rank over the reals. This improves the bounds in the recently introduced rank-Ramsey problem and it gives better constructions of large partial $m$-ovoids for $m > 2$ in the binary symplectic space.

Abstract:We give a lattice-theoretic characterization for a manifold of $\mathrm{OG}10$ type to be birational to some moduli space of (twisted) sheaves on a K3 surface. We apply it to the Li-Pertusi-Zhao variety of $\mathrm{OG}10$ type associated to any smooth cubic fourfold. Moreover we determine when a birational transformation is induced by an automorphism of the K3 surface and we use this to classify all induced birational symplectic involutions.

Abstract:Polar spaces over finite fields are fundamental in combinatorial geometry. The concept of polar space was firstly introduced by F. Veldkamp who gave a system of 10 axioms in the spirit of Universal Algebra. Later the axioms were simplified by J. Tits, who introduced the concept of subspaces. Later on, from the point of view of incidence geometry, axioms of polar spaces were also given by F. Buekenhout and E. Shult in 1974. The reader can find the three systems of axioms of polar spaces in Appendix A. Examples of polar spaces are the so called Finite classical polar spaces, i.e. incidence structures arising from quadrics, symplectic forms and Hermitian forms, which are in correspondance with reflexive sesquilinear <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://forms.It" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> is still an open problem to show whether or not classical polar spaces are the only example of finite polar spaces. Nowadays, some research problems related to finite classical polar space are: existence of spreads and ovoids; existence of regular systems and $m$-ovoids; upper or lower bounds on partial spreads and partial ovoids. Moreover, polar spaces are in relation with combinatorial objects as regular graphs, block designs and association schemes. In this Ph.D. Thesis we investigate the geometry of finite classical polar spaces, giving contributions to the above problems. The thesis is organized as follows. Part I is more focused on the geometric aspects of polar spaces, while in Part II some combinatorial objects are introduced such as regular graphs, association schemes and combinatorial designs. Finally Appendix B, C and D are dedicated to give more details on, respectively, maximal curves, linear codes and combinatorial designs, giving useful results and definitions.

Multimatroids and rational curves with cyclic action

Abstract:We study the connection between multimatroids and moduli spaces of rational curves with cyclic action. Multimatroids are generalizations of matroids and delta-matroids introduced by Bouchet, which naturally arise in topological graph theory. The vantage point of moduli of curves provides a tropical framework for studying multimatroids, generalizing the previous connection between type-A permutohedral varieties (Losev--Manin moduli spaces) and matroids, and the connection between type-B permutohedral varieties (Batyrev--Blume moduli spaces) and delta-matroids. Specifically, we equate a combinatorial nef cone of the moduli space with the space of $\mathbb{R}$-multimatroids, a slight generalization of multimatroids, and we introduce the independence polytopal complex of a multimatroid, whose volume is identified with an intersection number on the moduli space. As an application, for the generating set of the Chow ring of the moduli space consisting of all psi-classes and their pullbacks along certain forgetful maps, we give a combinatorial formula for their intersection numbers by relating to the volumes of independence polytopal complexes of multimatroids.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider local centralizer classification and rigidity of some toral automorphisms. In low dimensions, we classify up to finite index possible centralizers for volume preserving diffeomorphisms -close to an ergodic irreducible toral automorphism . Moreover, we show a rigidity result in the case that the centralizer of is large: if the smooth centralizer is virtually isomorphic to that of then is -conjugate to . In higher dimensions, we show a similar rigidity result for certain irreducible toral automorphisms. We also classify up to finite index all possible centralizers for symplectic diffeomorphisms -close to a class of irreducible symplectic automorphisms on tori of any dimension.

Abstract:Perepechko and Zaidenberg conjectured that the neutral component of the automorphism group of a rigid affine variety is a torus. We prove this conjecture for toric varieties and varieties with a torus action of complexity one. We also obtain a criterion for an $m$-suspension over a rigid variety to be rigid (for every rigid variety and every regular function). Additionally, we study the automorphism group of $m$-suspensions satisfying this criterion.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the orbit configuration spaces of some equivariant closed manifolds over simple convex polytopes in toric topology, such as small covers, quasi-toric manifolds and (real) moment-angle manifolds; especially for the cases of small covers and quasi-toric manifolds. These kinds of orbit configuration spaces have non-free group actions, and they are all noncompact, but still built via simple convex polytopes. We obtain an explicit formula of the Euler characteristic for orbit configuration spaces of small covers and quasi-toric manifolds in terms of the h-vector of a simple convex polytope. As a by-product of our method, we also obtain a formula of the Euler characteristic for the classical configuration space, which generalizes the Félix-Thomas formula. In addition, we also study the homotopy type of such orbit configuration spaces. In particular, we determine an equivariant strong deformation retraction of the orbit configuration space of 2 distinct orbit-points in a small cover or a quasi-toric manifold, which allows to further study the algebraic topology of such an orbit configuration space by using the Mayer-Vietoris spectral sequence.
