Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:This paper is to study further some properties of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. Some rigidity theorems for harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds are given. By introducing the stress-energy tensor of maps between Finsler manifolds, some integral formulas are obtained. Moreover, it is proved that any conformal strongly harmonic map from an n(>2)-dimensional Finsler manifold to a Finsler manifold must be homothetic.

Abstract:We analyse the Finsler geometries of the kinematic space of spinless and spinning electrically charged particles in an external Rañada field. We consider the most general actions that are invariant under the Lorentz, electromagnetic gauge and reparametrization transformations. The Finsler geometries form a set parametrized by the gauge fields in each case. We give a simple method to calculate the fundamental objects of the Finsler geometry of the kinematic space of a particle in a generic electromagnetic field. Then we apply this method to calculate the geodesic equations of the spinless and spinning particles. Also, we show that the electromagnetic duality in the Rañada background induces a simple dual map in the set of Finsler geometries. The duality map has a simple interpretation in terms of an electrically charged particle that interacts with the electromagnetic potential and a magnetically charged particle that interacts with the dual magnetoelectric potential. We exemplify the action of the duality map by calculating the dual geodesic equation.

Abstract:A generalized Einstein-Hilbert functional in Finsler geometry is defined and its Euler-Lagrange equation is derived, which depends on not only the Ricci scalar but also the mean Landsberg curvature. Such critical metrics include usual Riemann-Einstein metrics. Some non-Riemannian examples of critical metrics are given. Moreover, some rigidity theorems for a Finsler metric to be Riemannian are obtained.

Abstract:Some links between Lorentz and Finsler geometries have been developed in the last years, with applications even to the Riemannian case. Our purpose is to give a brief description of them, which may serve as an introduction to recent references. As a motivating example, we start with Zermelo navigation problem, where its known Finslerian description permits a Lorentzian picture which allows for a full geometric understanding of the original problem. Then, we develop some issues including: (a) the accurate description of the Lorentzian causality using Finsler elements, (b) the non-singular description of some Finsler elements (such as Kropina metrics or complete extensions of Randers ones with constant flag curvature), (c) the natural relation between the Lorentzian causal boundary and the Gromov and Busemann ones in the Finsler setting, and (d) practical applications to the propagation of waves and firefronts.

Abstract:Lorentz invariance is one of the foundations of modern physics; however, Lorentz violation may happen from the perspective of quantum gravity, and plenty of studies on Lorentz violation have arisen in recent years. As a good tool to explore Lorentz violation, Finsler geometry is a natural and fundamental generalization of Riemann geometry. The Finsler structure depends on both coordinates and velocities. Here, we simply introduce the mathematics of Finsler geometry. We review the connection between modified dispersion relations and Finsler geometries and discuss the physical influence from Finsler geometry. We review the connection between Finsler geometries and theories of Lorentz violation, such as the doubly special relativity, the standard-model extension, and the very special relativity.

Abstract:Finsler geometry is a natural generalization of (pseudo-)Riemannian geometry, where the line element is not the square root of a quadratic form but a more general homogeneous function. Parameterizing this in terms of symmetric tensors suggests a possible interpretation in terms of higher-spin fields. We will see here that, at linear level in these fields, the Finsler version of the Ricci tensor leads to the curved-space Fronsdal equation for all spins, plus a Stueckelberg-like coupling. Nonlinear terms can also be systematically analyzed, suggesting a possible interacting structure. No particular choice of spacetime dimension is needed. The Stueckelberg mechanism breaks gauge transformations to a redundancy that does not change the geometry. This is however not enough to eliminate non-transverse modes, at least for some versions of Finsler dynamics.

Abstract:We consider a Finslerian type geometrization of the non-relativistic quantum mechanics in its hydrodynamical (Madelung) formulation, by also taking into account the effects of the presence of the electromagnetic fields on the particle motion. In the Madelung representation the Schrödinger equation can be reformulated as the classical continuity and Euler equations of classical fluid mechanics in the presence of a quantum potential, representing the quantum hydrodynamical evolution equations. The equation of particle motion can then be obtained from a Lagrangian similar to its classical counterpart. After the reparametrization of the Lagrangian it turns out that the Finsler metric describing the geometric properties of quantum hydrodynamics is a Kropina metric. We present and discuss in detail the metric and the geodesic equations describing the geometric properties of the quantum motion in the presence of electromagnetic fields. As an application of the obtained formalism we consider the Zermelo navigation problem in a quantum hydrodynamical system, whose solution is given by a Kropina metric. The case of the Finsler geometrization of the quantum hydrodynamical motion of spinless particles in the absence of electromagnetic interactions is considered in detail, and the Zermelo navigation problem for this case is also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss a variational approach to the length functional and its relation to sub-Hamiltonian equations on sub-Finsler manifolds. Then, we introduce the notion of the nonholonomic sub-Finslerian structure and prove that the distributions are geodesically invariant concerning the Barthel non-linear connection. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the curves that are abnormal extremals; likewise, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for normal extremals to be the motion of a free nonholonomic mechanical system, and vice versa. Moreover, we show that a coordinate-free approach for a free particle is a comparison between the solutions of the nonholonomic mechanical problem and the solutions of the Vakonomic dynamical problem for the nonholonomic sub-Finslerian structure. In addition, we provide an example of the nonholonomic sub-Finslerian structure. Finally, we show that the sub-Laplacian measures the curvature of the nonholonomic sub-Finslerian structure.

A metrical approach to Finsler geometry

Abstract:In the standard approach to Finsler geometry the metric is defined as a vertical Hessian and the Chern or Cartan connections appear as just two among many possible natural linear connections on the pullback tangent bundle. Here it is shown that the Hessian nature of the metric, the non-linear connection and the Chern or Cartan connections can be derived from a few compatibility axioms between metric and Finsler connection. This result provides a metrical formulation of Finsler geometry which is well adapted to field theory, and which has proved useful in Einstein-Cartan-like approaches to Finsler gravity.

Abstract:An extension of Riemmann's geometry into a direction dependent geometric structure is usually described by Finsler's geometry. Historically, this construction was motivated by the well-known Riemann's quartic length element example. Quite surprisingly, the same quartic expression emerges in solid-state electrodynamics as a basic dispersion relation -- covariant Fresnel equation. Consequently, Riemann's quartic length expression can be interpreted as a mathematical model of a well-established physics phenomena. In this paper, we present various examples of Riemann's quartic that demonstrate that Finsler's geometry is too restrictive even in the case of a positive definite Euclidean signature space. In the case of the spaces endowed with an indefinite (Minkowski) signature, there are much more singular hypersurfaces where the strong axioms of Finsler's geometry are broken down. We propose a weaker definition of Finsler's structure that is required to be satisfied only on open subsets of the tangent bundle. We exhibit the characteristic singular hypersurfaces related to Riemann's quartic and briefly discuss their possible physical interpretation.

Abstract:Finsler space is differentiable manifold for which Minkowski space is the fiber of the tangent bundle. To understand structure of the reference frame in Finsler space, we need to understand the structure of orthonormal basis in Minkowski space. In this paper, I considered the definition of orthonormal basis in Minkowski space, the structure of metric tensor relative to orthonormal basis, procedure of orthogonalization. Linear transformation of Minkowski space which preserves the scalar product is called a motion. Linear transformation which maps the orthonormal basis into an infinitely close orthonormal basis is infinitesimal motion. An infinitesimal motion maps orthonormal basis into orthonormal basis. The set of infinitesimal motions generates Lie algebra, which acts single transitive on basis manifold of Minkowski space. Element of twin representation is called quasimotion of Minkowski space. Quasimotion of event space is called Lorentz transformation.

Abstract:There are two definitions of Einstein-Finsler spaces introduced by Akbar-Zadeh, which we will show is equal along the integral curves of $I$-invariant projective vector fields. The sub-algebra of the $C$-projective vector fields, leaving the $H$-curvature invariant, has been studied extensively. Here we show on a closed Finsler space with negative definite Ricci curvature reduces to that of Killing vector fields. Moreover, if an Einstein-Finsler space admits such a projective vector field then the flag curvature is constant. Finally, a classification of compact isotropic mean Landsberg manifolds admitting certain projective vector fields is obtained with respect to the sign of Ricci curvature.

Abstract:This paper is a study of a generalization of the quantum Riemannian Hamiltonian evolution, previously analyzed by us, in the geometrization of quantum mechanical evolution in a Finsler geometry. We find results with dynamical equations governing the evolution of the trajectories defined by the expectation values of the position. The analysis appears to provide an underlying geometry described by a geodesic equation, with a connection form with a second term which is an essentially quantum effect. These dynamical equations provide a new geometric approach to the quantum evolution where we suggest a definition for "local instability" in the quantum theory.

Abstract:We present an explicit connection between the symmetries in a Very Special Relativity (VSR) and isometric group of a specific Finsler space. It is shown that the line element that is invariant under the VSR symmetric group is a Finslerian one. The Killing vectors in Finsler space are constructed in a systematic way. The Lie algebras corresponding to the symmetries of VSR, are obtained from a geometric famework. The dispersion relation and the Lorentz invariance violation effect in the VSR, are discussed.
Traversable wormholes in Finsler geometry under conformal motion

Abstract:This paper aims to investigate the possibility of physically achievable new wormhole solutions within the context of Finsler geometry by focusing on conformal motion. For this purpose, we study the barotropic linear equation of state (EoS). We scrutinized their geometric features within the EoS model, which includes baryonic and non-baryonic matter. Through derived field equations, shape functions adhering to critical criteria governed by the Finsler parameter $\gamma$ are explored. By evaluating energy conditions, violations are found, which indicate the potential presence of exotic matter necessary for traversable wormholes. Notably, violations of energy conditions signify the plausibility of traversable wormholes within the conformally transformed Finslerian space observed in both baryonic and non-baryonic scenarios. Additionally, anisotropy exploration uncovers repulsive geometric characteristics within these wormholes.

Abstract:Finsler differential geometry enables enriched mathematical and physical descriptions of the mechanics of materials with microstructure. The first propositions for Finsler geometry in solid mechanics emerged some six decades ago. Ideas set forth in these early works are reviewed, along with subsequent literature culminating in contemporary theories of Finsler-geometric continuum mechanics. Concepts unique to generalized Finsler spaces, in the context of continuum mechanical applications, are highlighted. Capabilities afforded by physical models in generalized Finsler spaces are contrasted with those of standard approaches in affinely connected spaces. Theory and several examples of reduced dimensionality are reported for boundary value problems of fracture and phase transformations, showing how simultaneously novel, physical, and pragmatic model predictions can be obtained from Finsler-type continuum field theory. Lastly, the modern theory is newly applied to describe nonlinear elastic ferromagnetic solids in the magnetically saturated state. A variational approach is used to derive Euler–Lagrange equations for macroscopic and microscopic, i.e., respective electromechanical and electronic continuum, equilibrium states. For a representative generalized Finsler metric depending on material symmetry, augmented conservation laws of macroscopic momentum and electronic spin angular momentum naturally emerge.
