Abstract:We construct the first examples of what we call fake ES-irreducible components; Definition 2.8. In our way to do so, we classify the automorphism groups of smooth plane sextics that only have automorphisms of order 3 or less; Theorems 2.1, 2.4 and 2.5, Corollaries 2.9 and 2.11.

Abstract:We prove that the equisingular deformation type of a simple real plane sextic curve with smooth real part is determined by its real homological type, \ie, the polarization, exceptional divisors, and real structure recorded in the homology of the covering $K3$-surface. As an illustration, we obtain an equisingular deformation classification of real plane sextics with empty real part (for completeness, we consider the few non-simple ones as well).

Abstract:A fake projective plane is a complex surface with the same Betti numbers as $\mathbb{C} P^2$ but not biholomorphic to it. We study the fake projective plane $\mathbb{P}_{\operatorname{fake}}^2 = (a = 7, p = 2, \emptyset, D_3 2_7)$ in the Cartwright-Steger classification. In this paper, we exploit the large symmetries given by $\operatorname{Aut}(\mathbb{P}_{\operatorname{fake}}^2) = C_7 \rtimes C_3$ to construct an embedding of this surface into $\mathbb{C} P^5$ as a system of $56$ sextics with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-7})$. For each torsion line bundle $T \in \operatorname{Pic}(\mathbb{P}_{\operatorname{fake}}^2)$, we also compute and study the linear systems $|nH + T|$ with small $n$, where $H$ is an ample generator of the Néron-Severi group.

Abstract:We study complex plane projective sextic curves with simple singularities up to equisingular deformations. It is shown that two such curves are deformation equivalent if and only if the corresponding pairs are diffeomorphic. A way to enumerate all deformation classes is outlined, and a few examples are considered, including classical Zariski pairs.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a very general smooth hypersurface of degree $6$ in $\mathbb{P}^3$. In this paper we will prove that the moduli space of $\mu$-stable rank $2$ torsion free sheaves with respect to hyperplane section having $c_1 = \mathcal{O}_S(1)$, with fixed $c_2 \ge 27$ is irreducible.

Abstract:We compute the fundamental group of the complement of each irreducible sextic of weight eight or nine (in a sense, the largest groups for irreducible sextics), as well as of 169 of their derivatives (both of and not of torus type). We also give a detailed geometric description of sextics of weight eight and nine and of their moduli spaces and compute their Alexander modules; the latter are shown to be free over an appropriate ring.

Abstract:A classical result of von Staudt states that if eight planes osculate a twisted cubic curve and we divide them into two groups of four, then the eight vertices of the corresponding tetrahedra lie on a twisted cubic curve. In the current paper, we give an alternative proof of this result using modern tools, and at the same time we prove the analogous result for rational normal curves in any projective space. This higher dimensional generalization was claimed without proof in a paper of H.S. White in 1921.

Moduli spaces on Kuznetsov components are Irreducible Symplectic Varieties

Abstract:This article studies moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects in the Kuznetsov component of a cubic fourfold that don't admit a symplectic resolution, i.e., moduli spaces of objects with non-primitve Mukai vector v=mv_0 that is not of OG10-type and where v_0^2 >0. For a generic stability condition, it is shown that these moduli spaces are projective irreducible symplectic varieties with factorial terminal singularities and that their deformation class is uniquely determined by the integers m and v_0^2. On the one hand, this generalizes the results of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1703.10839" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1703.10839">arXiv:1703.10839</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1912.06935" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1912.06935">arXiv:1912.06935</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2007.14108" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.14108">arXiv:2007.14108</a>, which deal with moduli spaces of objects in the Kuznetsov component of a cubic fourfold which are smooth or of OG10-type; on the other hand, this extends to the Kuznetsov component of a cubic fourfold the results of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1802.01182" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1802.01182">arXiv:1802.01182</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2012.10649" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.10649">arXiv:2012.10649</a>, on Gieseker moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces with non-primitive Mukai vector.

Abstract:We prove irreducibility for the space of cyclic covers of fixed numerical type between smooth projective curves, and also for the space of cyclic covers of prime order and of fixed numerical-combinatorial type between moduli-stable projective curves. As an application we describe the irreducible components of the singular locus of the compactified moduli space of curves $\bar{\mahfrak M_g}$, extending the work of Cornalba, who described the irreducible components of the singular locus of the moduli space of curves $\mahfrak M_g}$.

Quatroids and Rational Plane Cubics

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Abstract:Sextic double solids, double covers of $\mathbb P^3$ branched along a sextic surface, are the lowest degree Gorenstein Fano 3-folds, hence are expected to behave very rigidly in terms of birational geometry. Smooth sextic double solids, and those which are $\mathbb Q$-factorial with ordinary double points, are known to be birationally rigid. In this article, we study sextic double solids with an isolated compound $A_n$ singularity. We prove a sharp bound $n \leq 8$, describe models for each $n$ explicitly and prove that sextic double solids with $n > 3$ are birationally non-rigid.

Abstract:A fake octagon is a genus two translation surface with only one singular point and the same periods as the octagon. Existence of infinitely many fake octagons was established first by McMullen (2007), and more generally follows from dynamical properties of the isoperiodic foliation. The purpose of this note is to describe an infinite family of fakes constructed by means of elementary methods. We describe an easy cut-and-paste surgery and show that the n th iterate of that surgery is a fake octagon Oct n . Moreover we show that Oct n ≠ Oct m for n ≠ m , and that any Oct n can be approximated arbitrarily well by some other Oct m . This note is intended to be elementary and fully accessible to non-expert readers.

Abstract:We construct two new infinite series of irreducible components of the moduli space of semistable nonlocally free reflexive rank 2 sheaves on the three-dimensional complex projective space. In the first series the sheaves have an even first Chern class, and in the second series they have an odd one, while the second and third Chern classes can be expressed as polynomials of a special form in three integer variables. We prove the uniqueness of components in these series for the Chern classes given by those polynomials.

Abstract:We consider the question whether a real threefold X fibred into quadric surfaces over the real projective line is stably rational (over R) if the topological space X(R) is connected. We give a counterexample. When all geometric fibres are irreducible, the question is open. We investigate a family of such fibrations for which the intermediate jacobian technique is not available. We produce two independent methods which in many cases enable one to prove decomposition of the diagonal.

Abstract:Recently, Prasad and Yeung classified all possible fundamental groups of fake projective planes. According to their result, many fake projective planes admit a nontrivial group of automorphisms, and in that case it is isomorphic to $\bbZ/3\bbZ$, $\bbZ/7\bbZ$, $7:3$, or $(\bbZ/3\bbZ)^2$, where $7:3$ is the unique non-abelian group of order 21. Let $G$ be a group of automorphisms of a fake projective plane $X$. In this paper we classify all possible structures of the quotient surface $X/G$ and its minimal resolution.

Abstract:For each nonnegative integer m we show that any closed, oriented topological four-manifold with fundamental group Z_{4m+2} and odd intersection form, with possibly seven exceptions, either admits no smooth structure or admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures up to diffeomorphism. Moreover, we construct infinite families of non-complex irreducible fake projective planes with diverse fundamental groups.

Abstract:For a given graph whose edges are labeled with general real numbers, we consider the set of functions from the vertex set into the Euclidean plane such that the distance between the images of neighbouring vertices is equal to the corresponding edge label. This set of functions can be expressed as the zero set of quadratic polynomials and our main result characterizes the number of complex irreducible components of this zero set in terms of combinatorial properties of the graph. In case the complex components are three-dimensional, then the graph is minimally rigid and the component number is a well-known invariant from rigidity theory. If the components are four-dimensional, then they correspond to one-dimensional coupler curves of flexible planar mechanisms. As an application, we characterize the degree of irreducible components of such coupler curves combinatorially.

Abstract:We show that the infinite staircases which arise in the ellipsoid embedding functions of rigid del Pezzo surfaces can be entirely explained in terms of rational sesquicuspidal symplectic curves. Moreover, we show that these curves can all be realized algebraically, giving various new families of algebraic curves with one cusp singularity. Our main techniques are (i) a generalized Orevkov twist, and (ii) the interplay between algebraic $\Q$-Gorenstein smoothings and symplectic almost toric fibrations. Along the way we develop various methods for constructing singular algebraic (and hence symplectic) curves which may be of independent interest.

A Real Generalized Trisecant Trichotomy

Abstract:The classical trisecant lemma says that a general chord of a non-degenerate space curve is not a trisecant; that is, the chord only meets the curve in two points. The generalized trisecant lemma extends the result to higher-dimensional varieties. It states that the linear space spanned by general points on a projective variety intersects the variety in exactly these points, provided the dimension of the linear space is smaller than the codimension of the variety and that the variety is irreducible, reduced, and non-degenerate. We prove a real analogue of the generalized trisecant lemma, which takes the form of a trichotomy. Along the way, we characterize the possible numbers of real intersection points between a real projective variety and a complimentary dimension real linear space. We show that any integer of correct parity between a minimum and a maximum number can be achieved. We then specialize to Segre-Veronese varieties, where our results apply to the identifiability of independent component analysis, tensor decomposition and to typical tensor ranks.

Abstract:We provide new examples of curves of genus 6 or 10 attaining the Serre bound. They all belong to the family of sextics introduced in [19] as a generalization of Wiman's sextics [38] and Edge's sextics [9]. Our approach is based on a theorem by Kani and Rosen which allows, under certain assumptions, to fully decompose the Jacobian of the curve. With our investigation we are able to update several entries in the table www.manypoints.org, see [37].
