Abstract:A concrete geometrisation scheme is proposed for the Green-Schwarz cocycles in the supersymmetric de Rham cohomology of the super-minkowskian spacetime, which determine standard super-$\sigma$-model dynamics of super-p-branes. The scheme yields higher-supergeometric structures with supersymmetry akin to those known from the un-graded setting - distinguished (Murray-type) p-gerbe objects in the category of Lie supergroups. These are shown to carry a canonical equivariant structure for the action of the discrete Kostelecký-Rabin subgroup of the target supersymmetry group on the target, and thus to resolve the `topology' of the corresponding Rabin-Crane soul superorbifold of the super-minkowskian spacetime. The equivariant structure is seen to effectively define a novel $\sigma$-model of super-p-brane dynamics in the super-orbifold through the construction of the corresponding (gauge-)symmetry defect.

Abstract:We study type IIB supergravity solutions that are dual to two-dimensional superconformal defects in d = 4 SCFTs which preserve = (0 , 2) supersymmetry. We consider solutions dual to defects in = 4 SYM theory that have non-trivial monodromy for U(1) 3 ⊂ SO(6) global symmetry and we also allow for the possibility of conical singularities. In addition, we consider the addition of fermionic and bosonic mass terms that have non trivial dependence on the spatial directions transverse to the defect, while preserving the superconformal symmetry of the defect. We compute various physical quantities including the central charges of the defect expressed as a function of the monodromy, the on-shell action as well as associated supersymmetric Rényi entropies. Analogous computations are carried out for superconformal defects in the = 1, d = 4 Leigh-Strassler SCFT. We also show that the defects of the two SCFTs are connected by a line of bulk marginal mass deformations and argue that they are also related by bulk RG flow.

The $\mathfrak{su}(2)_{-1}$ WZW model

Abstract:Some WZW models on affine Lie superalgebras at critical level describe string theory on AdS backgrounds at critical values of the string tension. This is the case of $\mathfrak{psu}(1,1|2)_1$ for ${\rm AdS}_3 \times {\rm S}^3$ and potentially of $\mathfrak{u}(2|2)_1$ (or related algebras) for ${\rm AdS}_5 \times {\rm S}^5$. Many interesting features of these superalgebra models are already captured by their affine subalgebra $\mathfrak{su}(2)_{-1}$. In this paper we study the WZW model on $\mathfrak{su}(2)_{-1}$: we classify the representations, introduce a free field realisation, and decompose the free field modules in terms of $\mathfrak{su}(2)_{-1}$. We find continuous and discrete modular invariants and see that the latter naturally leads to considering superalgebra extensions of $\mathfrak{su}(2)_{-1}$. Lastly, we find an invariant for the free field theory of four symplectic bosons.

On Supergravity and Noncritical Strings

Abstract:Motivated by the long-term goal of finding holographic descriptions for ${\mathcal N}=1$ and ${\mathcal N}=2$ super QCD, we revisit the subject of ''noncritical'' superstring theory. Focusing on string models with 6d super Poincaré invariance, we provide a careful worldsheet derivation of the leading-order effective theories for the lowest modes. We identify them as $\textit{seven}$-dimensional, $\textit{maximally supersymmetric}$ gauged supergravities: the $SO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIA and the $ISO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIB. The same theories also arise as consistent truncations on $S^3$ of the 10d IIB and IIA supergravities, respectively, where the chirality flip is as expected from T-duality. These effective supergravities should be interpreted in the following sense. The noncritical string can be viewed as a special case of a discrete series of backgrounds labelled by an integer $k$ (which counts the number of NS5 branes in a certain duality frame); the ''noncritical'' value is $k=2$, while for $k \to \infty$ one recovers a weakly-curved 10d target space. The effective supergravities described here give an accurate description of the interactions among the lowest modes for $k \to \infty$, with higher derivative corrections suppressed by powers of $1/k$. We discuss BPS solutions of the 7d gauged supergravities and their uplift to 10d solutions. In particular, we find a novel class of solutions with RR flux, parametrized by a function of three variables that solves an elegant PDE. While we cannot solve the PDE in closed form except in trivial cases, we confirm that our solutions correspond to a 10d IIA Hanany-Witten setup with continuous distributions of both ''color'' D4 branes and ''flavor'' D6 branes.

Abstract:We generalize the auxiliary field deformations of the principal chiral model (PCM) introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2405.05899" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.05899">arXiv:2405.05899</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2407.16338" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2407.16338">arXiv:2407.16338</a> to sigma models whose target manifolds are symmetric or semi-symmetric spaces, including a Wess-Zumino term in the latter case. This gives rise to a new infinite family of classically integrable $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ coset models of the form which are of interest in applications of integrability to worldsheet string theory and holography. We demonstrate that every theory in this infinite class admits a zero-curvature representation for its equations of motion by exhibiting a Lax connection.

In this paper, we show how to derive the complete pure spinor $AdS_5\times S^5$ superstring sigma-model from 4DCS theory with defects. The matter sector of this sigma model was previously derived by Costello and Yamazaki, and we propose here that the pure spinor ghosts come from gauge-fixing meromorphic transformations of 4DCS which lead to the usual pure spinor Lax connection including the ghost contribution.

Cosmic Topological Defects from Holography

Abstract:This work investigates cosmic topological defects in gauge theories, focusing on models with an $SU(N)$ gauge group coupled with a single flavor, explored through a holographic framework. At low energies, the effective theory is described by an axion-like particle resulting from the spontaneous breaking of the axial $U(1)_A$ flavor symmetry. As the Universe cools below a critical temperature, the chiral symmetry is broken, and non-trivial vacuum configurations form, resulting in the creation of cosmic strings and domain walls. We provide a UV description of these defects in a particular holographic theory, the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model, as probe D6-branes. We show the presence of a first-order phase transition separating string loop from domain wall solutions. String loops charged under the baryon symmetry and with angular momentum - vortons - can be understood as excitations of a topological phase of matter given by a Chern-Simons theory living on the D6-brane world volume. Finally, we provide an effective description of string loops and vortons in terms of degrees of freedom living on the flavor brane, i.e. mesonic modes.

Abstract:We study the properties of interacting line defects in the four-dimensional Chern Simons (CS) gauge theory with invariance given by the $SL\left( m|n\right) $ super-group family. From this theory, we derive the oscillator realisation of the Lax operator for superspin chains with $SL(m|n)$ symmetry. To this end, we investigate the holomorphic property of the bosonic Lax operator $\mathcal{L}$ and build a differential equation $% \mathfrak{D}\mathcal{L}=0$ solved by the Costello-Gaioto-Yagi realisation of $\mathcal{L}$ in the framework of\ the CS theory. We generalize this construction to the case of gauge super-groups, and develop a Dynkin super-diagram algorithm to\ deal with the decomposition of the Lie superalgebras. We obtain the generalisation of the Lax operator describing the interaction between the electric Wilson super-lines and the magnetic 't Hooft super-defects. This coupling is given in terms of a mixture of bosonic and fermionic oscillator degrees of freedom in the phase space of magnetically charged 't Hooft super-lines. The purely fermionic realisation of the superspin chain Lax operator is also investigated and it is found to coincide exactly with the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$- gradation of Lie superalgebras.\ \newline Keywords: 4D Chern-Simons theory, Super-gauge symmetry, Lie superalgebras and Dynkin super-diagrams, Superspin chains and integrability, Super- Lax operator.

Abstract:We study the (super-)symmetries of classical solutions in the higher spin (super-)gravity in AdS3. We show that the symmetries of the solutions are encoded in the holonomy around the spatial circle. When the spatial holonomies of the solutions are trivial, they preserve maximal symmetries of the theory, and are actually the smooth conical defects. We find all the smooth conical defects in the sl(N), so(2N + 1), sp(2N), so(2N), g 2, as well as in sl(N|N −1) and osp(2N + 1|2N) Chern-Simons gravity theories. In the bosonic higher spin cases, there are one-to-one correspondences between the smooth conical defects and the highest weight representations of Lie group. Furthermore we investigate the higher spin black holes in osp(3|2) and sl(3|2) higher spin (super-)gravity and find that they are only partially symmetric. In general, the black holes break all the supersymmetries, but in some cases they preserve part of the supersymmetries.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss how gauging one-form symmetries in Chern-Simons theories is implemented in an A-twisted topological open string theory. For example, the contribution from a fixed H/Z bundle on a three-manifold M, arising in a BZ gauging of H Chern-Simons, for Z a finite subgroup of the center of H, is described by an open string worldsheet theory whose bulk is a sigma model with target a Z-gerbe (a bundle of one-form symmetries) over T^* M, of characteristic class determined by the H/Z bundle. We give a worldsheet picture of the decomposition of one-form-symmetry-gauged Chern-Simons in three dimensinos, and we describe how a target-space constraint on bundles arising in the gauged Chern-Simons theory has a natural worldsheet realization. Our proposal provides examples of the expected correspondence between worldsheet global higher-form symmetries, and target-space gauged higher-form symmetries.

Abstract:We consider two seemingly different theories in the $\Omega$-background: one arises upon the most generic Higgsing of a 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ $\text{U}(N)$ gauge theory coupled to matter, yielding a 3d-1d intersecting defect; the other one arises upon simple Higgsing of a 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ $\text{U}(N|M)$ supergroup gauge theory coupled to super-matter, yielding another defect. The cases $N=M=1$ are discussed in detail via equivariant localization to matrix-like models. The first theory exhibits itself a supergroup-like structure, which can be motivated via non-perturbative string dualities, and in a matter decoupling limit it is argued to be dual to a supergroup version of refined Chern-Simons theory. Furthermore, it is observed that the partition functions of the two defect theories are related by analytic continuation in one of the equivariant parameters. We find a common origin in the algebraic engineering through $q$-Virasoro screening currents. Another simple Higgsing of the 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ $\text{U}(1|1)$ yields a single component defect whose partition function is reminiscent of ordinary refined Chern-Simons on a lens space.

Generalized Symmetries in Supergravities and Superconformal Field Theories via String Theory

Abstract:In this dissertation, we study the generalized symmetries in supergravities and superconformal field theories from the string theory perspective. Part one is devoted to the study of string universality in high spacetime dimensions. Answering this question requires us to combine the following two approaches. In the "top-down" approach, We focus on supergravity theories in 7, 8, and 9 dimensional spacetime with 16 supercharges. We emphasize two discrete aspects of these theories: generalized global symmetries and frozen singularities. We give an exhaustive classification of IIB supergravity theory in 8D, particularly emphasizing these two discrete aspects. In the "bottom-up" approach, we present a consistency condition of general 8D supergravity theories involving their higher-form symmetries use it to rule out many global structures of the gauge groups in 8D supergravity theories that do not admit string theory constructions. Part two studies the generalized global symmetries of geometrically-engineered quantum field theories via string theory. We examined branes wrapping on relative topological cycles that give heavy defects that are charged under generalized global symmetries, which can then be used to construct new lower-dimensional theories. By investigating the string theory origin of the topological operators, we provide a general construction of these topological operators in the context of geometric engineering as branes wrapped on the homological cycles in the asymptotic boundary of the internal geometry. We illustrate this proposal by determining non-invertible 2-form symmetries in 6D superconformal field theories. Furthermore, by wrapping type IIB 7-brane on the entire asymptotic boundary of the internal manifold, we explicitly give a unified string-theoretic construction of two different types of field-theoretic non-invertible duality defects.

Abstract: Forty-six years after the birth of supersymmetry in 1973 from works of Julius Wess and Bruno Zumino, the standard quantum-field-theorists and particle physicists' language of `superspaces', `supersymmetry', and `supersymmetric action functionals in superspace formulation' as given in Chapters IV, V, VI, VII, XXII of the classic on supersymmetry and supergravity: Julius Wess & Jonathan Bagger: Supersymmetry and Supergravity (2nd ed.), is finally polished, with only minimal mathematical patches added for consistency and accuracy in dealing with nilpotent objects from the Grassmann algebra involved, to a precise setting in the language of complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-Algebraic Geometry. This is completed after the lesson learned from D(14.1) (arXiv:1808.05011 [math.DG]) and the notion of `$d=3+1$, $N=1$ towered superspaces' as complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-schemes, their distinguished sectors, and purge-evaluation maps first developed in SUSY(1) (= D(14.1.Supp.1)) (arXiv:1902.06246 [hep-th]) and further polished in the current work. While the construction depends on a choice of a trivialization of the spinor bundle by covariantly constant sections, as long as the transformation law and the induced isomorphism under a change of trivialization of the spinor bundle by covariantly constant sections are understood, any object or structure thus defined or constructed is mathematically well-defined. The construction can be generalized to all other space-time dimensions with simple or extended supersymmetries. This is part of the mathematical foundation required to study fermionic D-branes in the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz formulation.
The $\mathfrak{u}(2|2)_1$ WZW model

Abstract:WZW models based on super Lie algebras play an important role for the description of string theory on AdS spaces. In particular, for the case of ${\rm AdS}_3 \times {\rm S}^3$ with pure NS-NS flux the super Lie algebra of $\mathfrak{psu}(1,1|2)_k$ appears in the hybrid formalism, and higher dimensional AdS spaces can be described in terms of related supergroup cosets. In this paper we study the WZW models based on $\mathfrak{u}(2|2)_1$ and $\mathfrak{psu}(2|2)_1$ that may play a role for the worldsheet theory that is dual to free super Yang-Mills in 4D.

Abstract:We study $D=11$ supergravity solutions which are dual to one-dimensional superconformal defects in $d=3$ SCFTs. We consider defects in ABJM theory with monodromy for $U(1)^4\subset SO(8)$ global symmetry, as well as in $\mathcal{N}=2$ mABJM SCFT, which arises from the RG flow of a mass deformation of ABJM theory, with monodromy for $U(1)^3\subset SU(3)\times U(1)$ global symmetry. We show that the defects of the two SCFTs are connected by a line of bulk marginal mass deformations and argue that they are also related by bulk RG flow. In all cases we allow for the possibility of conical singularities at the location of the defect. Various physical observables of the defects are computed including the defects conformal weight and the partition function, as well as associated supersymmetric Renyi entropies.
