Abstract:We show that the classification diagram of a relative $\infty$-category arising from a relative simplicial category is equivalent to the levelwise nerve. Applications include the comparison of the diagonal of the levelwise nerve and the homotopy coherent nerve, and a result on the levelwise localizations of simplicial categories.

Abstract:In the case of (∞,1) -categories, the homotopy coherent nerve gives a right Quillen equivalence between the models of simplicially enriched categories and of quasi-categories. This shows that homotopy coherent diagrams of (∞,1) -categories can equivalently be defined as functors of quasi-categories or as simplicially enriched functors out of the homotopy coherent categorifications. In this paper, we construct a homotopy coherent nerve for (∞,n) -categories. We show that it realizes a right Quillen equivalence between the models of categories strictly enriched in (∞,n−1) -categories and of Segal category objects in (∞,n−1) -categories. This similarly enables us to define homotopy coherent diagrams of (∞,n) -categories equivalently as functors of Segal category objects or as strictly enriched functors out of the homotopy coherent categorifications.

Abstract:One can associate to any strict globular $\omega$-category three augmented simplicial nerves called the globular nerve, the branching and the merging semi-cubical nerves. If this strict globular $\omega$-category is freely generated by a precubical set, then the corresponding homology theories contain different informations about the geometry of the higher dimensional automaton modeled by the precubical set. Adding inverses in this $\omega$-category to any morphism of dimension greater than 2 and with respect to any composition laws of dimension greater than 1 does not change these homology theories. In such a framework, the globular nerve always satisfies the Kan condition. On the other hand, both branching and merging nerves never satisfy it, except in some very particular and uninteresting situations. In this paper, we introduce two new nerves (the branching and merging semi-globular nerves) satisfying the Kan condition and having conjecturally the same simplicial homology as the branching and merging semi-cubical nerves respectively in such framework. The latter conjecture is related to the thin elements conjecture already introduced in our previous papers.

Multiple Cylinder of Relations for Finite Spaces and Nerve Theorem for Strong-Good Cover

Abstract:In this paper, we develop the concept of multiple cylinder of relations which is a generalization of the relation cylinder, extending the multiple non-Hausdorff mapping cylinder to sequences of finite T0-spaces linked by a series of relations. This construction is important in capturing complex homotopical structures across chains of finite spaces and, when the relations are induced by maps, it serves as a third space that collapses to two distinct finite spaces. Additionally, we introduce the concept of a strong-good cover for simplicial complexes and finite spaces, char acterized by collapsible (rather than merely contractible) intersections. This leads to a strengthened version of the Nerve Theorem, which we develop for simplicial complexes as well as for finite spaces with strong-good covers, demonstrating that these complexes and spaces and their associated nerves maintain the same simple homotopy type, thereby refining classical results for finite simplicial complexes and finite topological structures.

Abstract:The subject of this paper is a nerve construction for bicategories introduced by Leinster, which defines a fully faithful functor from the category of bicategories and normal pseudofunctors to the category of presheaves over Joyal's category <math>Θ2</math>. We prove that the nerve of a bicategory is a 2-quasi-category (a model for <math>(∞,2)</math>-categories due to Ara), and moreover that the nerve functor restricts to the right part of a Quillen equivalence between Lack's model structure for bicategories and a Bousfield localisation of Ara's model structure for 2-quasi-categories. We deduce that Lack's model structure for bicategories is Quillen equivalent to Rezk's model structure for <math>(2,2)</math>-Θ-spaces on the category of simplicial presheaves over <math>Θ2</math>.To this end, we construct the homotopy bicategory of a 2-quasi-category, and prove that a morphism of 2-quasi-categories is an equivalence if and only if it is essentially surjective on objects and fully faithful. We also prove a Quillen equivalence between Ara's model structure for 2-quasi-categories and the Hirschowitz–Simpson–Pellissier model structure for quasi-category-enriched Segal categories, from which we deduce a few more results about 2-quasi-categories, including a conjecture of Ara concerning weak equivalences of 2-categories.

Abstract:We introduce necklicial nerve functors from enriched categories to simplicial sets, which include Cordier's homotopy coherent, Lurie's differential graded and Le Grignou's cubical nerves. It is shown that every necklicial nerve can be lifted to the templicial objects of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2302.02484v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2302.02484v2">arXiv:2302.02484v2</a>. Building on the work of Dugger and Spivak, we give sufficient conditions under which the left-adjoint of a necklicial nerve can be described more explicitly. As an application, we obtain novel and simple expressions for the left-adjoints of the dg-nerve and cubical nerve.

Abstract:We extend the notion of the nerve of a category for a small class of crossed simplicial groups, explicitly describing them using generators and relations. We do this by first considering a generalised bar construction of a group before looking at twisted versions of some of these nerves. As an application we show how we can use the twisted nerves to give equivariant versions of certain derived stacks.

Abstract:Given a locally finite cover of a simplicial complex by subcomplexes, Björner's version of the Nerve Theorem provides conditions under which the homotopy groups of the nerve agree with those of the original complex through a range of dimensions. We extend this result to covers of CW complexes by subcomplexes and to open covers of arbitrary topological spaces, without local finiteness restrictions. Moreover, we show that under somewhat weaker hypotheses, the same conclusion holds when one utilizes the completed nerve introduced by Fernández-Minian. Additionally, we prove homological versions of these results, extending work of Mirzaii and van der Kallen in the simplicial setting. Our main tool is the Čech complex associated to a cover, as analyzed in work of Dugger and Isaksen. As applications, we prove a generalized crosscut theorem for posets and some variations on Quillen's Poset Fiber Theorem.

Homotopy classification of knotted defects in bounded domains

Abstract:Nozaki et.~al.\ gave a homotopy classification of the knotted defects of ordered media in three-dimensional space by considering continuous maps from complements of spatial graphs to the order parameter space modulo a certain equivalence relation. We extend their result by giving a classification scheme for ordered media in handlebodies, where defects are allowed to reach the boundary. Through monodromies around meridional loops, global defects are described in terms of planar diagrams whose edges are colored by elements of the fundamental group of the order parameter space. We exhibit examples of this classification in octahedral frame fields and biaxial nematic liquid crystals.

Abstract:We prove affirmatively the conjecture raised by J. Mostovoy; the space of short ropes is weakly homotopy equivalent to the classifying space of the topological monoid (or category) of long knots in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We make use of techniques developed by S. Galatius and O. Randal-Williams to construct a manifold space model of the classifying space of the space of long knots, and we give an explicit map from the space of short ropes to the model in a geometric way.

Abstract:We show that the nerve complex of n arcs in the circle is homotopy equivalent to either a point, an odd-dimensional sphere, or a wedge sum of spheres of the same even dimension. Moreover this homotopy type can be computed in time O(n log n). For the particular case of the nerve complex of evenly-spaced arcs of the same length, we determine the dihedral group action on homology, and we relate the complex to a cyclic polytope with n vertices. We give three applications of our knowledge of the homotopy types of nerve complexes of circular arcs. First, we use the connection to cyclic polytopes to give a novel topological proof of a known upper bound on the distance between successive roots of a homogeneous trigonometric polynomial. Second, we show that the Lovasz bound on the chromatic number of a circular complete graph is either sharp or off by one. Third, we show that the Vietoris--Rips simplicial complex of n points in the circle is homotopy equivalent to either a point, an odd-dimensional sphere, or a wedge sum of spheres of the same even dimension, and furthermore this homotopy type can be computed in time O(n log n).

Abstract:We give a homotopy classification of the global defects in ordered media and explain it via the example of biaxial nematic liquid crystals, that is, systems where the order parameter space is the quotient of the three-sphere S 3 by the quaternion group Q . As our mathematical model, we consider continuous maps from complements of spatial graphs to the space S 3 / Q modulo a certain equivalence relation and find that the equivalence classes are enumerated by the six subgroups of Q . Through monodromy around meridional loops, the edges of our spatial graphs are marked by conjugacy classes of Q ; once we pass to planar diagrams, these labels can be refined to elements of Q associated with each arc. The same classification scheme applies not only in the case of Q but also to arbitrary groups.

Geometric Realizations of Tricategories

Abstract:Any tricategory characteristically has associated various simplicial or pseudo-simplicial objects. This paper explores the relationship amongst three of them: the pseudo-simplicial bicategory so-called Grothendieck nerve of the tricategory, the simplicial bicategory termed its Segal nerve, and the simplicial set called its Street geometric nerve, and it proves the fact that the geometric realizations of all of these possible candidate 'nerves of the tricategory' are homotopy equivalent. Our results provide coherence for all reasonable extensions to tricategories of Quillen's definition of the 'classifying space' of a category as the geometric realization of the category's Grothendieck nerve. Many properties of the classifying space construction for tricategories may be easier to establish depending on the nerve used for realizations. For instance, by using Grothendieck nerves we state and prove the precise form in which the process of taking classifying spaces transports tricategorical coherence to homotopy coherence. Segal nerves allow us to obtain an extension to bicategories of the results by Mac Lane, Stasheff, and Fiedorowicz about the relation between loop spaces and monoidal or braided monoidal categories by showing that the group completion of the classifying space of a bicategory enriched with a monoidal structure is, in a precise way, a loop space. With the use of geometric nerves, we obtain genuine simplicial sets whose simplices have a pleasing geometrical description in terms of the cells of the tricategory and, furthermore, we obtain an extension of the results by Joyal, Street, and Tierney about the classification of braided categorical groups and their relationship with connected, simply connected homotopy 3-types, by showing that, via the classifying space construction, bicategorical groups are a convenient algebraic model for connected homotopy 3-types.

Symmetries of the cyclic nerve

Abstract:We undertake a systematic study of the Hochschild homology, i.e. (the geometric realization of) the cyclic nerve, of $(\infty,1)$-categories (and more generally of category-objects in an $\infty$-category), as a version of factorization homology. In order to do this, we codify $(\infty,1)$-categories in terms of quiver representations in them. By examining a universal instance of such Hochschild homology, we explicitly identify its natural symmetries, and construct a non-stable version of the cyclotomic trace map. Along the way we give a unified account of the cyclic, paracyclic, and epicyclic categories. We also prove that this gives a combinatorial description of the $n=1$ case of factorization homology as presented in [AFR18], which parametrizes $(\infty,1)$-categories by solidly 1-framed stratified spaces.

A double $(\infty,1)$-categorical nerve for double categories

Abstract:We construct a nerve from double categories into double $(\infty,1)$-categories and show that it gives a right Quillen and homotopically fully faithful functor between the model structure for weakly horizontally invariant double categories and the model structure on bisimplicial spaces for double $(\infty,1)$-categories seen as double Segal objects in spaces complete in the horizontal direction. We then restrict the nerve along a homotopical horizontal embedding of 2-categories into double categories, and show that it gives a right Quillen and homotopically fully faithful functor between Lack's model structure for 2-categories and the model structure for 2-fold complete Segal spaces. We further show that Lack's model structure is right-induced along this nerve from the model structure for 2-fold complete Segal spaces.

Abstract:In this paper we study the nerves of two types of coverings of a sphere $S^{d-1}$: (1) coverings by open hemispheres; (2) antipodal coverings by closed hemispheres. In the first case, nerve theorem implies that the nerve is homotopy equivalent to $S^{d-1}$. In the second case, we prove that the nerve is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of $(2d-2)$-dimensional spheres. The number of wedge summands equals the Möbius invariant of the geometric lattice (or hyperplane arrangement) associated with the covering. This result explains some observed large-scale phenomena in topological data analysis. We review the particular case, when the coverings are centered in the root system $A_d$. In this case the nerve of the covering by open hemispheres is the space of directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), and the nerve of the covering by closed hemispheres is the space of non-strongly connected directed graphs. The homotopy types of these spaces were described by Björner and Welker, and the incarnation of these spaces appeared independently as "the poset of orders" and "the poset of preorders" respectively in the works of Bouc. We study the space of DAGs in terms of Gale and combinatorial Alexander dualities, and propose how this space can be applied in automated machine learning.

Abstract:Using the Harpaz-Nuiten-Prasma interpretation of the Dwyer-Kan-Smith cohomology of a simplicial category $\mathcal{X}$, we obtain a cochain complex for the André-Quillen cohomology groups in which the $k$-invariants for $\mathcal{X}$ take value. Given a map of simplicial categories $\phi:\mathcal{Y}\rightarrow P^{(n-1)} \mathcal{X}$ into a Postnikov section of $\mathcal{X}$, we use a homotopy colimit decomposition of $\mathcal{Y}$ to study the obstruction to lifting $\phi$ to $P^{(n)}\mathcal{X}$. In particular, an explicit description of this obstruction for the boundary of a cube can be used to recover various higher homotopy invariants of $\mathcal{X}$.
