Abstract:We prove that the $(2n,1)$-cable of the figure-eight knot is not smoothly slice when $n$ is odd, by using the real Seiberg-Witten Frøyshov invariant of Konno-Miyazawa-Taniguchi. For the computation, we develop an $O(2)$-equivariant version of the lattice homotopy type, originally introduced by Dai-Sasahira-Stoffregen. This enables us to compute the real Seiberg-Witten Floer homotopy type for a certain class of knots. Additionally, we present some computations of Miyazawa's real framed Seiberg-Witten invariant for 2-knots.

Abstract:We prove that the double branched cover of a twist-roll spun knot in $S^4$ is smoothly preserved when four twists are added, and that the double branched cover of a twist-roll spun knot connected sum with a trivial projective plane is preserved after two twists are added. As a consequence, we conclude that a family of homotopy $\mathbb{CP}^2$s recently constructed by Miyazawa are each diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{CP}^2$.

Abstract:We give a new geometric obstruction to the iterated Bing double of a knot being a slice link: for n>1 the (n+1)-st iterated Bing double of a knot is rationally slice if and only if the n-th iterated Bing double of the knot is rationally slice. The main technique of the proof is a covering link construction simplifying a given link. We prove certain similar geometric obstructions for n <= 1 as well. Our results are sharp enough to conclude, when combined with algebraic invariants, that if the n-th iterated Bing double of a knot is slice for some n, then the knot is algebraically slice. Also our geometric arguments applied to the smooth case show that the Ozsvath-Szabo and Manolescu-Owens invariants give obstructions to iterated Bing doubles being slice. These results generalize recent results of Harvey, Teichner, Cimasoni, Cha and Cha-Livingston-Ruberman. As another application, we give explicit examples of algebraically slice knots with non-slice iterated Bing doubles by considering von Neumann rho-invariants and rational knot concordance. Refined versions of such examples are given, that take into account the Cochran-Orr-Teichner filtration.

This result was first proved by Cha and Kim using covering link calculus. We also use this tool, but our proof is substantially simpler and illuminates several generalizations.

Abstract:We prove that the $(p,q)$-cable of a non-trivial knot is not Floer homologically thin. Using this and a theorem of Ian Zemke in \cite{zemke}, we find a larger class of satellite knots, containing non-cable knots as well, which are not Floer homologically thin.

Abstract:We prove that all knots with unknotting number at most 21 are smoothly slice in the K3 surface. We also prove a more general statement for 4-manifolds that contain a plumbing tree of spheres. Our strategy is based on a flexible method to remove double points of immersed surfaces in 4-manifolds by tubing over neighbourhoods of embedded trees. As a byproduct, we recover a classical result of Norman and Suzuki that every knot is smoothly slice in $S^2 \times S^2$ and in $\mathbb{CP}^2 \# \overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$.

Abstract:This is a companion paper to earlier work of the author, which generalizes to an infinite family of $(2,2w+1)$-cabling of the figure eight knot ($|w|>3$) and proposes general formulas for the two-variable series invariant of the family of the cable knots. The formulas provide an insight into the cabling operation. We verify the conjecture through explicit examples using the recursion method, which also provide a strong evidence for the $q$-holonomic property of the series invariant. This result paves a road for computation of the WRT invariant of a 3-manifold obtained from Dehn surgery on the cable knots via a certain $q$-series. We also analyze and conjecture formulas for $(3,3w+1)$-cabling ($|w|>3$).

Abstract:For $X = S^2 \times S^2$ and $\mathbb{CP}^2 \# \overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$, we show that there exists a link with 2 components which is not smoothly slice in $X$. By contrast, it is well-known that every knot (i.e., link with 1 component) is smoothly slice in both $S^2 \times S^2$ and $\mathbb{CP}^2 \# \overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$. Our proof uses classical topological and smooth obstructions, as well as constructive arguments to exploit the symmetries of the problem. As a side note, we also show that for every compact 4-manifold there exists a link that is not slice in it (either smoothly or topologically).

Abstract:It is well-known that complex hyperbolic triangle groups $\Delta(3,3,4)$ generated by three complex reflections $I_1,I_2,I_3$ in $\mbox{PU(2,1)}$ has 1-dimensional moduli space. Deforming the representations from the classical $\mathbb{R}$-Fuchsian one to $\Delta(3,3,4; \infty)$, that is, when $I_3I_2I_1I_2$ is accidental parabolic, the 3-manifolds at infinity change from a Seifert 3-manifold to the figure-eight knot complement. When $I_3I_2I_1I_2$ is loxodromic, there is an open set $\Omega \subset \partial\mathbf H^{2}_{\mathbb C}=\mathbb S^3$ associated to $I_3I_2I_1I_2$, which is a subset of the discontinuous region. We show the quotient space $\Omega/ \Delta(3,3,4)$ is always the figure-eight knot complement in the deformation process. This gives the topological/geometrical explain that the 3-manifold at infinity of $\Delta(3,3,4; \infty)$ is the figure-eight knot complement. In particular, this confirms a conjecture of Falbel-Guilloux-Will.

Abstract:We consider homologically essential simple closed curves on Seifert surfaces of genus one knots in $S^3$, and in particular those that are unknotted or slice in $S^3$. We completely characterize all such curves for most twist knots: they are either positive or negative braid closures; moreover, we determine exactly which of those are unknotted. A surprising consequence of our work is that the figure eight knot admits infinitely many unknotted essential curves up to isotopy on its genus one Seifert surface, and those curves are enumerated by Fibonacci numbers. On the other hand, we prove that many twist knots admit homologically essential curves that cannot be positive or negative braid closures. Indeed, among those curves, we exhibit an example of a slice but not unknotted homologically essential simple closed curve. We further investigate our study of unknotted essential curves for arbitrary Whitehead doubles of non-trivial knots, and obtain that there is a precisely one unknotted essential simple closed curve in the interior of the doubles' standard genus one Seifert surface. As a consequence of all these we obtain many new examples of 3-manifolds that bound contractible 4-manifolds.

Abstract:A knot in $S^3$ is topologically slice if it bounds a locally flat disk in $B^4$. A knot in $S^3$ is rationally slice if it bounds a smooth disk in a rational homology ball. We prove that the smooth concordance group of topologically and rationally slice knots admits a $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$ subgroup. All previously known examples of knots that are both topologically and rationally slice were of order two. As a direct consequence, it follows that there are infinitely many topologically slice knots that are strongly rationally slice but not slice.

Abstract:Heegaard Floer homology and knot Floer homology are powerful invariants of 3-manifolds and links respectively. L-space knots are knots which admit Dehn surgeries to 3-manifolds with Heegaard Floer homology of minimal rank. In this paper we study almost L-space knots, which are knots admitting large Dehn surgeries to 3-manifolds with Heegaard Floer homology of next-to-minimal rank. Our main result is a classification of the $CFK^\infty$ type of almost L-space knots. As corollaries we show that almost L-space knots satisfy various topological properties, including some given by Baldwin-Sivek. We also give some new cable link detection results.

Abstract:This article presents an alternate way to prove a result originally proven by Harvey, Kawamuro, and Plamenvskaya in \cite{HaKaPl}. We accomplish this by explicitly constructing an overtwisted disk in the $p$-fold cyclic branched cover of $S^3$ with the standard contact structure branched along a carefully selected transverse knot. Furthermore, by utilizing this construction of the overtwisted disk, we can see that the overtwisted disk is contained in the complement of the branch locus.

Abstract:We prove a formula for the involutive concordance invariants of the cabled knots in terms of that of the companion knot and the pattern knot. As a consequence, we show that any iterated cable of a knot with parameters of the form (odd,1) is not smoothly slice as long as either of the involutive concordance invariants of the knot is nonzero. Our formula also gives new bounds for the unknotting number of a cabled knot, which are sometimes stronger than other known bounds coming from knot Floer homology.

Abstract:Whitehead doubles provide a plethora of examples of knots that are topologically slice but not smoothly slice. We discuss the problem of the Whitehead double of the Figure 8 knot and survey commonly used techniques to obstructing sliceness. Additionally, we improve bounds in general for the non-orientable 4 genus of $t$-twisted Whitehead doubles and provide genus 1 non-orientable cobordisms to cable knots.
