Abstract:In this paper, a unified family, for any $n\geqslant 2$ and $1\leqslant k\leqslant n-1$, of nonconforming finite element schemes are presented for the primal weak formulation of the $n$-dimensional Hodge-Laplace equation on $H\Lambda^k\cap H^*_0\Lambda^k$ and on the simplicial subdivisions of the domain. The finite element scheme possesses an $\mathcal{O}(h)$-order convergence rate for sufficiently regular data, and an $\mathcal{O}(h^s)$-order rate on any $s$-regular domain, $0<s\leqslant 1$, no matter what topology the domain has.

Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:In this work, we construct and analyze three dimensional high order finite volume element schemes for elliptic equations. In these schemes, the trial function space is chosen as the standard rth order Lagrange finite element space, where r >= 1 is an arbitrary positive integer; the test function space is chosen as the piecewise constant space with respect to the dual mesh of which the control volumes are constructed using Gauss points in each element of the primal mesh. We investigate the inf-sup property of these schemes and based on it, we prove that vertical bar u - u(h)vertical bar(1) = O(h(r)), vertical bar u(I) - u(h)vertical bar(1) = O(h(r+1)) and parallel to u - u(h)parallel to(0) = O(h(r+1)), where u is the exact solution, u(h) is the rth order finite volume element solution and u(I) is the piecewise rth order Lagrange interpolation of u. Several numerical examples are presented to verify the theoretical findings.

Abstract:In this paper, we study decoupled mixed element schemes for fourth order problems. A general process is designed such that an elliptic problem on high-regularity space is transformed to a decoupled system with spaces of low order involved only and is further discretised by low-degree finite elements. The process can be fit for various fourth order problems, and is used in the remaining of the paper particularly for three-dimensional bi-Laplacian equation to conduct a family of mixed element discretisation schemes.

Abstract:This article proposes a new numerical algorithm for second order elliptic equations in non-divergence form. The new method is based on a discrete weak Hessian operator locally constructed by following the weak Galerkin strategy. The numerical solution is characterized as a minimization of a non-negative quadratic functional with constraints that mimic the second order elliptic equation by using the discrete weak Hessian. The resulting Euler-Lagrange equation offers a symmetric finite element scheme involving both the primal and a dual variable known as the Lagrange multiplier, and thus the name of primal-dual weak Galerkin finite element method. Error estimates of optimal order are derived for the corresponding finite element approximations in a discrete H2H^2-norm, as well as the usual H1H^1- and L2L^2-norms. The convergence theory is based on the assumption that the solution of the model problem is H2H^2-regular, and that the coefficient tensor in the PDE is piecewise continuous and uniformly positive definite in the domain. Some numerical results are presented for smooth and non-smooth coefficients on convex and non-convex domains, which not only confirm the developed convergence theory but also a superconvergence result.

Abstract:Fourth-order differential equations play an important role in many applications in science and engineering. In this paper, we present a three-field mixed finite-element formulation for fourth-order problems, with a focus on the effective treatment of the different boundary conditions that arise naturally in a variational formulation. Our formulation is based on introducing the gradient of the solution as an explicit variable, constrained using a Lagrange multiplier. The essential boundary conditions are enforced weakly, using Nitsche's method where required. As a result, the problem is rewritten as a saddle-point system, requiring analysis of the resulting finite-element discretization and the construction of optimal linear solvers. Here, we discuss the analysis of the well-posedness and accuracy of the finite-element formulation. Moreover, we develop monolithic multigrid solvers for the resulting linear systems. Two and three-dimensional numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the discretization and efficiency of the multigrid solvers proposed.

Abstract:Nowadays numerical methods for handling partial differential equations is so vast that it is almost taken for granted. In this paper, we propose a discrete duality finite volume scheme with biquadratic elements and its application in solving two-dimensional elliptic equation on quadrilateral meshes. To test the robustness and efficiency of this method, we investigate several examples from physical and engineering fields with different parameters and coefficients. Numerical experiments, encompassing linear and nonlinear elliptic equations with constant or variable coefficients, reveal that the new method achieves optimal convergence in the continuous H1 -norm, with a 2nd-order convergence, and in the L2 -norm, with a 3rd-order convergence. Moreover, comparison with the existing biquadratic element finite volume scheme shows that the above method has an advantage of accuracy in the discrete L∞ -norm on several distorted meshes.

Abstract:In this paper, two nonconforming finite element schemes that use piecewise cubic and piecewise quartic polynomials respectively are constructed for the planar biharmonic equation with optimal convergence rates on general shape-regular triangulations. Therefore, it is proved that optimal finite element schemes of arbitrary order for planar biharmonic equation can be constructed on general shape-regular triangulations.

Abstract:This paper derives some discrete maximum principles for $P1$-conforming finite element approximations for quasi-linear second order elliptic equations. The results are extensions of the classical maximum principles in the theory of partial differential equations to finite element methods. The mathematical tools are based on the variational approach that was commonly used in the classical PDE theory. The discrete maximum principles are established by assuming a property on the discrete variational form that is of global nature. In particular, the assumption on the variational form is verified when the finite element partition satisfies some angle conditions. For the general quasi-linear elliptic equation, these angle conditions indicate that each triangle or tetrahedron needs to be $\mathcal{O}(h^\alpha)$-acute in the sense that each angle $\alpha_{ij}$ (for triangle) or interior dihedral angle $\alpha_{ij}$ (for tetrahedron) must satisfy $\alpha_{ij}\le \pi/2-\gamma h^\alpha$ for some $\alpha\ge 0$ and $\gamma>0$. For the Poisson problem where the differential operator is given by Laplacian, the angle requirement is the same as the existing ones: either all the triangles are non-obtuse or each interior edge is non-negative. It should be pointed out that the analytical tools used in this paper are based on the powerful De Giorgi's iterative method that has played important roles in the theory of partial differential equations. The mathematical analysis itself is of independent interest in the finite element analysis.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with C 0 (non-Lagrange) finite element approximations of the linear elliptic equations in non-divergence form and the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) equations with Cordes coefficients. Motivated by the Miranda–Talenti estimate, a discrete analog is proved once the finite element space is C 0 on the ( n - 1 ) -dimensional subsimplex (face) and C 1 on ( n - 2 ) -dimensional subsimplex. The main novelty of the non-standard finite element methods is to introduce an interior stabilization term to argument the PDE-induced variational form of the linear elliptic equations in non-divergence form or the HJB equations. As a distinctive feature of the proposed methods, no stabilization parameter is involved in the variational forms. As a consequence, the coercivity constant (resp. monotonicity constant) for the linear elliptic equations in non-divergence form (resp. the HJB equations) at discrete level is exactly the same as that from PDE theory. The quasi-optimal order error estimates as well as the convergence of the semismooth Newton method are established. Numerical experiments are provided to validate the convergence theory and to illustrate the accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed methods.

Abstract:This paper proposes a C0 (non-Lagrange) primal finite element approximation of the linear elliptic equations in non-divergence form with oblique boundary conditions in planar, curved domains. As an extension of [Calcolo, 58 (2022), No. 9], the Miranda–Talenti estimate for oblique boundary conditions at a discrete level is established by enhancing the regularity on the vertices. Consequently, the coercivity constant for the proposed scheme is exactly the same as that from PDE theory. The quasi-optimal order error estimates are established by carefully studying the approximation property of the finite element spaces. Numerical experiments are provided to verify the convergence theory and to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed methods.
Low-degree robust Hellinger-Reissner finite element schemes for planar linear elasticity with symmetric stress tensors

Abstract:In this paper, we study the construction of low-degree robust finite element schemes for planar linear elasticity on general triangulations. Firstly, we present a low-degree nonconforming Helling-Reissner finite element scheme. For the stress tensor space, the piecewise polynomial shape function space is $$ {\rm span}\left\{\left(\begin{array}{cc}1&0\\ 0 & 0\end{array}\right),\left(\begin{array}{cc}0&1\\ 1 & 0\end{array}\right),\left(\begin{array}{cc}0&0\\ 0 & 1\end{array}\right),\left(\begin{array}{cc}0&x\\ x & 0\end{array}\right),\left(\begin{array}{cc}0&y\\ y & 0\end{array}\right),\left(\begin{array}{cc}0&x^2-y^2\\ x^2-y^2 & 0\end{array}\right)\right\}, $$ the dimension of the total space is asymptotically 8 times of the number of vertices, and the supports of the basis functions are each a patch of an edge. The piecewise rigid body space is used for the displacement. Robust error estimations in $\mathbb{L}^2$ and broken $\mathbf{H}({\rm div})$ norms are presented. Secondly, we investigate the theoretical construction of schemes with lowest-degree polynomial shape function spaces. Specifically, a Hellinger-Reissner finite element scheme is constructed, with the local shape function space for the stress tensor being 5-dimensional which is of the lowest degree for the local approximation of $\mathbf{H}({\rm div};\mathbb{S})$, and the space for the displacement is piecewise constants. Robust error estimations in $\mathbb{L}^2$ and broken $\mathbf{H}({\rm div})$ norms are presented for regular solutions and data.

Substructuring preconditioners with novel interface solvers for general elliptic-type equations in three dimensions

Abstract:In this paper we propose two variants of the substructuring preconditioner for solving three-dimensional elliptic-type equations with strongly discontinuous coefficients. In the new preconditioners, we use the simplest coarse solver associated with the finite element space induced by the coarse partition, and construct novel interface solvers based on some new observations. The resulting preconditioners share the merits of the non-overlapping domain decomposition method (DDM) and the overlapping DDM in the sense that they not only are cheap but also are easy to implement. We apply the proposed preconditioners to solve the linear elasticity problems and Maxwell's equations in three dimensions. Numerical results show that the convergence rate of PCG method with the preconditioners are nearly optimal, and also robust with respect to the (possibly large) jumps of the coefficients in the considered equations.

Abstract:This paper presents a study of large linear systems resulting from the regular $B$-splines finite element discretization of the $\bm{curl}-\bm{curl}$ and $\bm{grad}-div$ elliptic problems on unit square/cube domains. We consider systems subject to both homogeneous essential and natural boundary conditions. Our objective is to develop a preconditioning strategy that is optimal and robust, based on the Auxiliary Space Preconditioning method proposed by Hiptmair et al. \cite{hiptmair2007nodal}. Our approach is demonstrated to be robust with respect to mesh size, and we also show how it can be combined with the Generalized Locally Toeplitz (GLT) sequences analysis presented in \cite{mazza2019isogeometric} to derive an algorithm that is optimal and stable with respect to spline degree. Numerical tests are conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to a canonical construction of a family of piecewise polynomials with the minimal degree capable of providing a consistent approximation of Sobolev spaces H-m in R-n (with n >= m >= 1) and also a convergent (nonconforming) finite element space for 2m-th-order elliptic boundary value problems in R-n. For this class of finite element spaces, the geometric shape is n-simplex, the shape function space consists of all polynomials with a degree not greater than m, and the degrees of freedom are given in terms of the integral averages of the normal derivatives of order m - k on all subsimplexes with the dimension n - k for 1 <= k <= m. This sequence of spaces has some natural inclusion properties as in the corresponding Sobolev spaces in the continuous cases.The finite element spaces constructed in this paper constitute the only class of finite element spaces, whether conforming or nonconforming, that are known and proven to be convergent for the approximation of any 2m-th-order elliptic problems in any R-n, such that n >= m >= 1. Finite element spaces in this class recover the nonconforming linear elements for Poisson equations (m = 1) and the well-known Morley element for biharmonic equations (m = 2).

Abstract:We introduce a generalized finite difference method for solving a large range of fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations in three dimensions. Methods are based on Cartesian grids, augmented by additional points carefully placed along the boundary at high resolution. We introduce and analyze a least-squares approach to building consistent, monotone approximations of second directional derivatives on these grids. We then show how to efficiently approximate functions of the eigenvalues of the Hessian through a multi-level discretization of orthogonal coordinate frames in R3\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$\mathbb {R}^3$$\end{document}. The resulting schemes are monotone and fit within many recently developed convergence frameworks for fully nonlinear elliptic equations including non-classical Dirichlet problems that admit discontinuous solutions, Monge–Ampère type equations in optimal transport, and eigenvalue problems involving nonlinear elliptic operators. Computational examples demonstrate the success of this method on a wide range of challenging examples.

Abstract:This paper discusses highly efficient discretization schemes for solving self-adjoint elliptic differential operator eigenvalue problems. Several new two-grid discretization schemes, including the conforming and nonconforming finite element schemes, are proposed by combining the finite element method with the shifted-inverse power method for matrix eigenvalue problems. With these schemes, the solution of an eigenvalue problem on a fine grid $\pi_{h}$ is reduced to the solution of an eigenvalue problem on a much coarser grid $\pi_{H}$ and the solution of a linear algebraic system on the fine grid $\pi_{h}$. Theoretical analysis shows that the schemes have a high efficiency. For instance, the resulting solution can maintain an asymptotically optimal accuracy by using the conforming linear element or the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element by taking $H=O(\sqrt[4]{h})$. Numerical experiments are presented to support the theoretical analysis. In addition, this paper establishes multigrid discretization schemes and proves their efficiency.

Abstract:In this paper, amiable mixed schemes are presented for two variants of fourth order curl equations. Specifically, mixed formulations for the problems are constructed, which are well-posed in Babuska-Brezzi's sense and admit stable discretizations by finite element spaces of low smoothness and of low degree. The regularities of the mixed formulations and thus equivalently the primal problems are established, and some finite elements examples are given which can exploit the regularity of the solutions to an optimal extent.

Abstract:A combined finite element method is presented in this paper to solve the elliptic problems posted in domains with rough boundaries. Solving these problems numerically is difficult because resolving the boundaries usually requires very fine meshes, while good quality meshes often over-refine unnecessarily the interior of the domain. The basic idea of the proposed method is to use a fine mesh with size h in the vicinity of oscillating boundaries and a coarse mesh with size H ≫ h for other portions of the domain to reduce some unnecessary computational effort. The transmission conditions across the fine-coarse mesh interface are treated by the penalty technique. The key point of the method lies in the new scheme employing a weighted average in the definition of the bilinear form, which avoids the affection of the ratio H ∕ h in the error estimate. We prove a quasi-optimal convergence in terms of elements since there is no whole H 2 regularity in the domain with rough boundaries. Numerical results are provided for elliptic equations in domains with non-oscillating or oscillating boundaries to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we first construct the $H^2$(curl)-conforming finite elements both on a rectangle and a triangle. They possess some fascinating properties which have been proven by a rigorous theoretical analysis. Then we apply the elements to construct a finite element space for discretizing quad-curl problems. Convergence orders $O(h^k)$ in the $H$(curl) norm and $O(h^{k-1})$ in the $H^2$(curl) norm are established. Numerical experiments are provided to confirm our theoretical results.
