Abstract:In this note we present the main details of the construction of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}(u)$ with torsion $\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$ and rank 6. Previously only rank 5 examples for such curves were known.

Abstract:For the elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ found by Kihara, with torsion group $\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$ and rank $\geq 5$, which is the current record for the rank of such curves, by using a suitable injective specialization, we determine exactly the rank and generators of $E(\mathbb{Q}(t))$.

Abstract:We describe a system of plane algebraic curves defined over \Z, attached naturally to the exponential function. On of these is a remarkable curve of degree 6 that has genus equal to 1. As the sectic curve has rational points, it is an elliptic curveand can be tranformed over \Q into the curve 1584.j1 of the LMFDB. One is left to wonder what the number 11, appearing in the factorisation 1584=2^4.3^2.11 has to do with the exponential function.

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.

Abstract:In 2016, Balakrishnan-Ho-Kaplan-Spicer-Stein-Weigandt produced a database of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ ordered by height in which they computed the rank, the size of the $2$-Selmer group, and other arithmetic invariants. They observed that after a certain point, the average rank seemed to decrease as the height increased. Here we consider the family of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose rational torsion subgroup is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/8\mathbb{Z}$. Conditional on GRH and BSD, we compute the rank of $92\%$ of the $202461$ curves with parameter height less than $10^3$. We also compute the size of the $2$-Selmer group and the Tamagawa product, and prove that their averages tend to infinity for this family.

Abstract:This paper presents a new result concerning the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve over an arbitrary number field K with a single point of order two that does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over its two-division field. We prove that at least half of all the quadratic twists of such an elliptic curve have arbitrarily large 2-Selmer rank, showing that the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of such an elliptic curve differs from the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve having either no rational two-torsion or full rational two-torsion.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve over $K$. The Mordell--Weil theorem asserts that the $K$-rational points $E(K)$ of $E$ form a finitely generated abelian group. In this work, we complete the classification of the finite groups which appear as the torsion subgroup of $E(K)$ for $K$ a cubic number field. To do so, we determine the cubic points on the modular curves $X_1(N)$ for \[N = 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 35, 36, 39, 45, 65, 121.\] As part of our analysis, we determine the complete list of $N$ for which $J_0(N)$ (resp., $J_1(N)$, resp., $J_1(2,2N)$) has rank 0. We also provide evidence to a generalized version of a conjecture of Conrad, Edixhoven, and Stein by proving that the torsion on $J_1(N)(\mathbb{Q})$ is generated by $\text{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$-orbits of cusps of $X_1(N)_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ for $N\leq 55$, $N \neq 54$.

Abstract:For an elliptic curve E / Q we show that there are infinitely many cyclic sextic extensions K / Q such that the Mordell-Weil group E ( K ) has rank greater than the subgroup of E ( K ) generated by all the E ( F ) for the proper subfields F ⊂ K . For certain curves E / Q we show that the number of such fields K of conductor less than X is ≫ X .

Abstract:In this paper, we consider elliptic curves induced by rational Diophantine quadruples, i.e. sets of four nonzero rationals such that the product of any two of them plus 1 is a perfect square. We show that for each of the groups $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}$ for $k = 2, 4, 6, 8$, there are infinitely many rational Diophantine quadruples with the property that the induced elliptic curve has this torsion group. We also construct curves with moderately large rank in each of these four cases.

Abstract:We combine the exact counting of all elliptic curves over $K = \mathbb{F}_q(t)$ with $\mathrm{char}(K) > 3$ by Bejleri, Satriano and the author, together with the torsion-free nature of most elliptic curves over global function fields proven by Phillips, and the overarching conjecture of Goldfeld and Katz-Sarnak regarding the ``Distribution of Ranks of Elliptic Curves''. Consequently, we arrive at the quantitative statement which naturally renders even finer conjecture regarding the lower order main terms differing for the number of $E/K$ with $|E(K)| = 1$ and $E(K) = \mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbb{Q}(T)$ be a non-isotrivial elliptic curve of rank $r$. A theorem due to Silverman implies that the rank $r_t$ of the specialization $E_t/\mathbb{Q}$ is at least $r$ for all but finitely many $t \in \mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, it is conjectured that $r_t \leq r+2$, except for a set of density $0$. In this article, when $E/\mathbb{Q}(T)$ has a torsion point of order $2$, under an assumption on the discriminant of a Weierstrass equation for $E/\mathbb{Q}(T)$, we produce an upper bound for $r_t$ that is valid for infinitely many $t$. We also present two examples of non-isotrivial elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}(T)$ such that $r_t \leq r+1$ for infinitely many $t$.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $p>3$ be a prime such that $p-1$ is not divisible by $3,4,5,7,11$. In this article we classify the groups that can arise as $E(\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p))_{\text{tors}}$ up to isomorphism. The method illustrates techniques for eliminating possible structures that can appear as a subgroup of $E(\mathbb{Q}^{ab})_{\text{tors}}.$

Abstract:The list of all groups that can appear as torsion subgroups of elliptic curves over number fields of degree $d$, $d=4,5,6$, is not completely determined. However, the list of groups $\Phi^{\infty}(d)$, $d=4,5,6$, that can be realized as torsion subgroups for infinitely many non-isomorphic elliptic curves over these fields are known. We address the question of which torsion subgroups can arise over a given number field of degree $d$. In fact, given $G\in\Phi^{\infty}(d)$ and a number field $K$ of degree $d$, we give explicit criteria telling whether $G$ is realized finitely or infinitely often over $K$. We also give results on the field with the smallest absolute value of its discriminant such that there exists an elliptic curve with torsion $G$. Finally, we give examples of number fields $K$ of degree $d$, $d=4,5,6$, over which the Mordell-Weil rank of elliptic curves with prescribed torsion is bounded from above.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to present elliptic curves defined over function fields of even characteristic having arbitrarily large Mordell-Weil rank. More precisely, we study elliptic curves arising as quartic twist of a supersingular elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{F}_2$ using the function field of a maximal curve $C$ that admits an order 4 automorphism. For such elliptic curves we provide a rank formula for its Mordell-Weil group in terms of the genera of $C$ and of another curve covered by $C$.

On the quadratic twist of elliptic curves with full $2$-torsion

Abstract:Let $E: y^2=x(x-a^2)(x+b^2)$ be an elliptic curve with full $2$-torsion group, where $a$ and $b$ are coprime integers and $2(a^2+b^2)$ is a square. Assume that the $2$-Selmer group of $E$ has rank two. We characterize all quadratic twists of $E$ with Mordell-Weil rank zero and $2$-primary Shafarevich-Tate groups $(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^2$, under certain conditions. We also obtain a distribution result of these elliptic curves.

Genus-2 Jacobians with torsion points of large order

Abstract:We produce new explicit examples of genus-2 curves over the rational numbers whose Jacobian varieties have rational torsion points of large order. In particular, we produce a family of genus-2 curves over Q whose Jacobians have a rational point of order 48, parametrized by a rank-2 elliptic curve over Q, and we exhibit a single genus-2 curve over Q whose Jacobian has a rational point of order 70, the largest order known. We also give new examples of genus-2 Jacobians with rational points of order 27, 28, and 39. Most of our examples are produced by `gluing' two elliptic curves together along their n-torsion subgroups, where n is either 2 or 3. The 2-gluing examples arise from techniques developed by the author in joint work with Leprévost and Poonen 15 years ago. The 3-gluing examples are made possible by an algorithm for explicit 3-gluing over non-algebraically closed fields recently developed by the author in joint work with Bröker, Lauter, and Stevenhagen.

Abstract:We produce a family of numerical Campedelli surfaces with \Z/6 torsion by constructing the (Gorenstein codimension 5) canonical ring of the étale six to one cover using serial unprojection. In Section 2 we develop the necessary algebraic machinery. Section 3 contains the numerical Campedelli surface construction, while Section 4 contains remarks and open questions.

Abstract:Conditionally on a conjecture on the étale cohomology of Hilbert modular surfaces and some minor technical assumptions, we establish new instances of the equivariant BSD-conjecture in rank $0$ with applications to the arithmetic of rational elliptic curves over quintic fields. The key ingredients are a refinement of twisted triple product $p$-adic $L$-functions, the construction of a compatible collection of Hirzebruch-Zagier cycles and an explicit reciprocity law relating the two.

Abstract:We investigate the rank growth of elliptic curves from $\mathbb{Q}$ to $S_4$ and $A_4$ quartic extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}$. In particular, we are interested in the quantity $\mathrm{rk}(E/K) - \mathrm{rk}(E/\mathbb{Q})$ for fixed $E$ and varying $K$. When $\mathrm{rk}(E/\mathbb{Q}) \leq 1$, with $E$ subject to some other conditions, we prove there are infinitely many $S_4$ quartic extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}$ over which $E$ does not gain rank, i.e. such that $\mathrm{rk}(E/K) - \mathrm{rk}(E/\mathbb{Q}) = 0$. To do so, we show how to control the 2-Selmer rank of $E$ in certain quadratic extensions, which in turn contributes to controlling the rank in families of $S_4$ and $A_4$ quartic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$.
