Abstract:Let a stick be broken at random at n-1 points to form n pieces. We consider three problems on forming k-gons with k out of these n pieces, and show how a statistical approach, through a linear transformation of variables, yields simple solutions that also allow fast computation.

Abstract:Break a stick at random at $n-1$ points to obtain $n$ pieces. We give an explicit formula for the probability that every choice of $k$ segments from this broken stick can form a $k$-gon, generalizing similar work. The method we use can be applied to other geometric probability problems involving broken sticks, which are part of a long-standing class of recreational probability problems with several applications to real-world models.

Abstract:The broken stick problem is the following classical question. You have a segment $[0,1]$. You choose two points on this segment at random. They divide the segment into three smaller segments. Show that the probability that the three segments form a triangle is $1/4$. The MIT PRIMES program, together with Art of Problem Solving, organized a high school research project where participants worked on several variations of this problem. Participants were generally high school students who posted ideas and progress to the Art of Problem Solving forums over the course of an entire year, under the supervision of PRIMES mentors. This report summarizes the findings of this CrowdMath project.

Abstract:The concerned study pertains to the development of a new stochastic model for the reliability analysis of linear consecutive-k-out-of-n: G system, where k>n2. In the developed model, system may collapse as a result of common cause failure or hardware failure in its units. The system has exponentially distributed failure rates, and in case of breakdown, it is repaired with the copula method. The developed model has been examined through supplementary variable technique (SVT) along with Laplace transform. The current paper has specifically studied consecutive-(n-1)-out-of-n: G system. The performance of such system having ten components is explored and its various reliability measures have been obtained and discussed with the help of graphs. The originality of this work lies in incorporating common cause failure in conjunction with copula repair in the reliability modeling of consecutive systems through the SVT. The study confirms that an increase in failure rates and the number of components of the concerned system decreases mean time to failure (MTTF). The profit of linear consecutive-9-out-of-10: G system is examined with the help of a numerical example.

Abstract:Perturbing the arrangements of pegs on a static Galton board can result in non-trivial stationary distributions, which in the continuum limit correspond to departure from regular gaussian behavior. Two such distributions are obtained. Further, the distributions generated for a dynamic galton board under external forcing in a general direction are obtained by solution of the corresponding stochastic differential equations. Exact cumulant generating functions for the distribution are presented for forcing in one dimension. An approximate expression, correct to first order in the forcing amplitude, is presented for the case of two dimensions. Both cases show nontrivial departures from the static gaussian solution.

Abstract:Two isomorphic graphs can have inequivalent spatial embeddings in 3-space. In this way, an isomorphism class of graphs contains many spatial graph types. A common way to measure the complexity of a spatial graph type is to count the minimum number of straight sticks needed for its construction in 3-space. In this paper, we give estimates of this quantity by enumerating stick diagrams in a plane. In particular, we compute the planar stick indices of knotted graphs with low crossing numbers. We also show that if a bouquet graph or a theta-curve has the property that its proper subgraphs are all trivial, then the planar stick index must be at least seven.

Stabbing balls with line segments and polygonal paths

Abstract:We study the problem of ordered stabbing of $n$ balls (of arbitrary and possibly different radii, no ball contained in another) in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 3$, with either a directed line segment or a (directed) polygonal curve. Here, the line segment, respectively polygonal curve, shall visit (intersect) the given sequence of balls in the order of the sequence. We present a deterministic algorithm that decides whether there exists a line segment stabbing the given sequence of balls in order, in time $O(n^{4d-2} \log n)$. Due to the descriptional complexity of the region containing these line segments, we can not extend this algorithm to actually compute one. We circumvent this hurdle by devising a randomized algorithm for a relaxed variant of the ordered line segment stabbing problem, which is built upon the central insights from the aforementioned decision algorithm. We further show that this algorithm can be plugged into an algorithmic scheme by Guibas et al., yielding an algorithm for a relaxed variant of the minimum-link ordered stabbing path problem that achieves approximation factor 2 with respect to the number of links. We conclude with experimental evaluations of the latter two algorithms, showing practical applicability.

A Bose-Einstein Approach to the Random Partitioning of an Integer

Abstract:Consider N equally-spaced points on a circle of circumference N. Choose at random n points out of $N$ on this circle and append clockwise an arc of integral length k to each such point. The resulting random set is made of a random number of connected components. Questions such as the evaluation of the probability of random covering and parking configurations, number and length of the gaps are addressed. They are the discrete versions of similar problems raised in the continuum. For each value of k, asymptotic results are presented when n,N both go to infinity according to two different regimes. This model may equivalently be viewed as a random partitioning problem of N items into n recipients. A grand-canonical balls in boxes approach is also supplied, giving some insight into the multiplicities of the box filling amounts or spacings. The latter model is a k-nearest neighbor random graph with N vertices and kn edges. We shall also briefly consider the covering problem in the context of a random graph model with N vertices and n (out-degree 1) edges whose endpoints are no more bound to be neighbors.

Abstract:For a nontrivial knot $K$, Negami found an upper bound on the stick number $s(K)$ in terms of its crossing number $c(K)$ which is $s(K) \leq 2 c(K)$. Later, Huh and Oh utilized the arc index $\alpha(K)$ to present a more precise upper bound $s(K) \leq \frac{3}{2} c(K) + \frac{3}{2}$. Furthermore, Kim, No and Oh found an upper bound on the equilateral stick number $s_{=}(K)$ as follows; $s_{=}(K) \leq 2 c(K) +2$. As a sequel to this research program, we similarly define the stick number $s(G)$ and the equilateral stick number $s_{=}(G)$ of a spatial graph $G$, and present their upper bounds as follows; $$ s(G) \leq \frac{3}{2} c(G) + 2e + \frac{3b}{2} -\frac{v}{2}, $$ $$ s_{=}(G) \leq 2 c(G) + 2e + 2b - k, $$ where $e$ and $v$ are the number of edges and vertices of $G$, respectively, $b$ is the number of bouquet cut-components, and $k$ is the number of non-splittable components.

Abstract:There is well-known problem of geometric probability which can be quote as the Broken Spaghetti Problem. It addresses the following question: A stick of spaghetti breaks into three parts and all points of the stick have the same probability to be a breaking point. What is the probability that the three sticks, putting together, form a triangle? In these notes, we describe a hidden geometric pattern behind the symmetric version of this problem, namely a fractal that parametrizes the sample space of this problem. Using that fractal, we address the question about the probability to obtain a $\delta$-equilateral triangle.

Angular Momentum Transport by MHD Turbulence in Accretion Disks: Gas Pressure Dependence of the Saturation Level of the Magnetorotational Instability

Abstract:The saturation level of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) is investigated using three-dimensional MHD simulations. The shearing box approximation is adopted and the vertical component of gravity is ignored, so that the evolution of the MRI is followed in a small local part of the disk. We focus on the dependence of the saturation level of the stress on the gas pressure, which is a key assumption in the standard alpha disk model. From our numerical experiments it is found that there is a weak power-law relation between the saturation level of the Maxwell stress and the gas pressure in the nonlinear regime; the higher the gas pressure, the larger the stress. Although the power-law index depends slightly on the initial field geometry, the relationship between stress and gas pressure is independent of the initial field strength, and is unaffected by Ohmic dissipation if the magnetic Reynolds number is at least 10. The relationship is the same in adiabatic calculations, where pressure increases over time, and nearly-isothermal calculations, where pressure varies little with time. Our numerical results are qualitatively consistent with an idea that the saturation level of the MRI is determined by a balance between the growth of the MRI and the dissipation of the field through reconnection. The quantitative interpretation of the pressure-stress relation, however, may require advances in the theoretical understanding of non-steady magnetic reconnection.

Abstract:A discrete k-out-of-n: G system with multi-state components is modelled by means of block-structured Markov chains. An indefinite number of repairpersons are assumed and PH distributions for the lifetime of the units and for the repair time are considered. The units can undergo two types of failures, repairable or non-repairable. The repairability of the failure can depend on the time elapsed up to failure. The system is modelled and the stationary distribution is built by using matrix analytic methods. Several performance measures of interest, such as the conditional probability of failure for the units and for the system, are built into the transient and stationary regimes. Rewards are included in the model. All results are shown in a matrix algorithmic form and are implemented computationally with Matlab. A numerical example of an optimization problem shows the versatility of the model.

Abstract:Pinning of dislocations at nanosized obstacles like precipitates, voids and bubbles, is a crucial mechanism in the context of phenomena like hardening and creep. The interaction between such an obstacle and a dislocation is often explored at fundamental level by means of analytical tools, atomistic simulations and finite element methods. Nevertheless, the information extracted from such studies has not been utilized to its maximum extent on account of insufficient information about the underlying statistics of this process comprising a large number of dislocations and obstacles in a system. Here we propose a new statistical approach, where the statistics of pinning of dislocations by idealized spherical obstacles is explored by taking into account the generalized size-distribution of the obstacles along with the dislocation density within a three-dimensional framework. The application of this approach, in combination with the knowledge of fundamental dislocation-obstacle interactions, has successfully been demonstrated for dislocation pinning at nanovoids in neutron irradiated type 316-stainless steel in regard to both conservative and non-conservative motions of dislocations.

Abstract:We connect the empirical or 'occupation' laws of certain discrete space time-inhomogeneous Markov chains, related to simulated annealing, to a novel class of 'stick-breaking' processes, a 'nonexchangeable' generalization of the Dirichlet process used in nonparametric Bayesian statistics. To make this unexpected correspondence, we examine an intermediate 'clumped' structure in both the time-inhomogeneous Markov chains and the stick-breaking processes, perhaps of its own interest, which records the sequence of different states visited and the scaled proportions of time spent on them. By matching the associated intermediate structures, we identify the limits of the empirical measures of the time-inhomogeneous Markov chains as types of stick-breaking processes.
Partitioning a Polygon Into Small Pieces

Abstract:We study the problem of partitioning a given simple polygon $P$ into a minimum number of connected polygonal pieces, each of bounded size. We describe a general technique for constructing such partitions that works for several notions of `bounded size,' namely that each piece must be contained in an axis-aligned or arbitrarily rotated unit square or a unit disk, or that each piece has bounded perimeter, straight-line diameter or geodesic diameter. The problems are motivated by practical settings in manufacturing, finite element analysis, collision detection, vehicle routing, shipping and laser capture microdissection. The version where each piece should be contained in an axis-aligned unit square is already known to be NP-hard [Abrahamsen and Stade, FOCS, 2024], and the other versions seem no easier. Our main result is to develop constant-factor approximation algorithms, which means that the number of pieces in the produced partition is at most a constant factor larger than the cardinality of an optimal partition. Existing algorithms [Damian and Pemmaraju, Algorithmica, 2004] do not allow Steiner points, which means that all corners of the produced pieces must also be corners of $P$. This has the disappointing consequence that a partition often does not exist, whereas our algorithms always produce meaningful partitions. Furthermore, an optimal partition without Steiner points may require $\Omega(n)$ pieces for polygons with $n$ corners where a partition consisting of just $2$ pieces exists when Steiner points are allowed. Other existing algorithms [Arkin, Das, Gao, Goswami, Mitchell, Polishchuk and Tóth, ESA, 2020] only allow $P$ to be split along chords (and aim to minimize the number of chords instead of the number of pieces), whereas we make no constraints on the boundaries of the pieces.

Abstract:Let N be the number of triangles in an Erdős–Rényi graph on n vertices with edge density where is a fixed constant. It is well known that N weakly converges to the Poisson distribution with mean as . We address the upper tail problem for N , namely, we investigate how fast k must grow, so that is not well approximated anymore by the tail of the corresponding Poisson variable. Proving that the tail exhibits a sharp phase transition, we essentially show that the upper tail is governed by Poisson behavior only when (sub-critical regime) as well as pin down the tail behavior when (super-critical regime). We further prove a structure theorem, showing that the sub-critical upper tail behavior is dictated by the appearance of almost k vertex-disjoint triangles whereas in the supercritical regime, the excess triangles arise from a clique like structure of size approximately . This settles the long-standing upper-tail problem in this case, answering a question of Aldous, complementing a long sequence of works, spanning multiple decades and culminating in Harel et al. (Duke Math J 171(10):2089–2192, 2022), which analyzed the problem only in the regime The proofs rely on several novel graph theoretical results which could have other applications.

Abstract:<p>Consider the random process in which the edges of a graph <math>G</math> are added one by one in a random order. A classical result states that if <math>G</math> is the complete graph <math>K2n</math> or the complete bipartite graph <math>Kn,n</math>, then typically a perfect matching appears at the moment at which the last isolated vertex disappears. We extend this result to arbitrary <math>k</math>‐regular bipartite graphs <math>G</math> on <math>2n</math> vertices for all <math>k=ω(nlog1/3n)</math>. Surprisingly, this is not the case for smaller values of <math>k</math>. Using a construction due to Goel, Kapralov, and Khanna, we show that there exist bipartite <math>k</math>‐regular graphs in which the last isolated vertex disappears long before a perfect matching appears.</p>

Abstract:We propose an algorithm for the closed-form recursive computation of joint moments and cumulants of all orders of k -hop counts in the 1D unit disk random graph model with Poisson distributed vertices. Our approach uses decompositions of k -hop counts into multiple Poisson stochastic integrals. As a consequence, using the Stein and cumulant methods we derive Berry-Esseen bounds for the asymptotic convergence of renormalized k -hop path counts to the normal distribution as the density of Poisson vertices tends to infinity. Computer codes for the recursive symbolic computation of moments and cumulants of any orders are provided as an online resource.

Abstract:Fix $k\geq 2$, choose $\frac{\log n}{n^{(k-1)/k}}\leq p\leq 1-\Omega(\frac{\log^4 n}{n})$, and consider $G\sim G(n,p)$. For any pair of vertices $v,w\in V(G)$, we give a simple and precise formula for the expected number of steps that a random walk on $G$ starting at $w$ needs to first arrive at $v$. The formula only depends on basic structural properties of $G$. This improves and extends recent results of Ottolini and Steinerberger, as well as Ottolini, who considered this problem for constant as well as for mildly vanishing $p$.
