Abstract:We improve Mahler's lower bound for the Mahler measure in terms of the discriminant and degree for a specific class of polynomials: complex monic polynomials of degree $d\geq 2$ such that all roots with modulus greater than some fixed value $r\geq1$ occur in equal modulus pairs. We improve Mahler's exponent $\frac{1}{2d-2}$ on the discriminant to $\frac{1}{2d-3}$. Moreover, we show that this value is sharp, even when restricting to minimal polynomials of integral generators of a fixed not totally real number field. An immediate consequence of this new lower bound is an improved lower bound for integral generators of number fields, generalising a simple observation of Ruppert from imaginary quadratic to totally complex number fields of arbitrary degree.

The Mahler measure of exact polynomials in three variables

Abstract:We prove that under certain explicit conditions, the Mahler measure of a three-variable polynomial can be expressed in terms of elliptic curve $L$-values and Bloch-Wigner dilogarithmmic values, conditionally on Beilinson's conjecture. In some cases, these dilogarithmic values simplify to Dirichlet $L$-values. The proof involves a construction of an element in $K_4^{(3)}$ of a smooth projective curve over a number field. This generalizes a result of Lalín for the polynomial $z + (x+1)(y+1)$. We apply our method to several other Mahler measure identities conjectured by Boyd and Brunault.

We prove identities relating the Mahler measure of [Formula: see text] to special values of the [Formula: see text]-functions of weight 2 cusp forms of level 64. We also express the Beilinson regulator which is a [Formula: see text] determinant of Mahler measures as special value of [Formula: see text]-function of the elliptic curve defined by [Formula: see text].
Mahler's problem and Turyn polynomials

Abstract:Mahler's problem asks for the largest possible value of the Mahler measure, normalized by the $L_2$ norm, of a polynomial with $\pm1$ coefficients and large degree. We establish a new record value in this problem exceeding $0.95$ by analyzing certain Turyn polynomials, which are defined by cyclically shifting the coefficients of a Fekete polynomial by a prescribed amount. It was recently established that the distribution of values over the unit circle of Fekete polynomials of large degree is effectively modeled by a particular random point process. We extend this analysis to the Turyn polynomials, and determine expressions for the asymptotic normalized Mahler measure of these polynomials, as well as for their normalized $L_q$ norms. We also describe a number of calculations on the corresponding random processes, which indicate that the Turyn polynomials where the shift is approximately $1/4$ of the length have Mahler measure exceeding $95\%$ of their $L_2$ norm. Further, we show that these asymptotic values are not disturbed by a small change to make polynomials having entirely $\pm1$ coefficients, which establishes the result on Mahler's problem.

Abstract:Following the work of Lalín and Mittal on the Mahler measure over arbitrary tori, we investigate the definition of the generalized Mahler measure for all Laurent polynomials in two variables when they do not vanish on the integration torus. We establish certain relations between the standard Mahler measure and the generalized Mahler measure of such polynomials. Later we focus our investigation on a tempered family of polynomials originally studied by Boyd, namely with and apply our results to this family. For the case, we explicitly calculate the generalized Mahler measure of over any arbitrary torus in terms of special values of the Bloch–Wigner dilogarithm. Finally, we extend our results to the several variable setting.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Boyd and Rodriguez Villegas relating the Mahler measure of the polynomial $(1+x)(1+y)+z$ and the value at $s=3$ of the $L$-function of an elliptic curve of conductor $15$. The proof makes use of the computation by Zudilin and the author of the regulator of certain $K_4$ classes on modular curves.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a subset of $\overline{\mathbb Z}$, the ring of all algebraic integers. A polynomial $f \in \mathbb Q[X]$ is said to be integral-valued on $S$ if $f(s) \in \overline{\mathbb Z}$ for all $s \in S$. The set $\text{Int}_{\mathbb Q}(S,\overline{\mathbb Z})$ of all integral-valued polynomials on $S$ forms a subring of $\mathbb Q[X]$ containing $\mathbb Z[X]$. We say that $\text{Int}_{\mathbb Q}(S,\overline{\mathbb Z})$ is trivial if $\text{Int}_{\mathbb Q}(S,\overline{\mathbb Z}) = \mathbb Z[X]$, and nontrivial otherwise. We give a collection of necessary and sufficient conditions on $S$ in order $\text{Int}_{\mathbb Q}(S,\overline{\mathbb Z})$ to be nontrivial. Our characterizations involve, variously, topological conditions on $S$ with respect to fixed extensions of the $p$-adic valuations to $\overline{\mathbb Q}$; pseudo-monotone sequences contained in $S$; ramification indices and residue field degrees; and the polynomial closure of $S$ in $\overline{\mathbb Z}$.

Determinants of Mahler measures and special values of $L$-functions

Abstract:We consider Mahler measures of two well-studied families of bivariate polynomials, namely $P_t=x+x^{-1}+y+y^{-1}+\sqrt{t}$ and $Q_t=x^3+y^3+1-\sqrt[3]{t}xy$, where $t$ is a complex parameter. In the cases when the zero loci of these polynomials define CM elliptic curves over number fields, we derive general formulas for their Mahler measures in terms of $L$-values of cusp forms. For each family, we also classify all possible values of $t$ in number fields of degree not exceeding $4$ for which the corresponding elliptic curves have complex multiplication. Finally, for all such values of $t$ in totally real number fields of degree $n=2$ and $n=4$, corresponding to elliptic curves $\mathcal{F}_t$ (resp. $\mathcal{C}_t$), we prove that determinants of $n\times n$ matrices whose entries are Mahler measures corresponding to their Galois conjugates are non-zero rational multiples of $L^{(n)}(\mathcal{F}_t,0)$ (resp. $L^{(n)}(\mathcal{C}_t,0)$).

Abstract:Motivated by a geometric meaning of Mahler's measure, we introduce two operator analogues of Mahler's measure. This leads to some interesting equalities and inequalities between the two operator-theoretic Mahler measures and the classical Mahler measure. In order to apply these results to the operator version of Lehmer's problem, we introduce and study an important class of operators, the so-called subharmonic operators. It is shown that the operator version of Lehmer's problem fails under some mild condition.

Abstract:We construct certain Rajchman measures by using integrability properties of the Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes transforms. In particular, we state a problem and prove that it is equivalent to the known and still unsolved question posed by R. Salem (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 53 (3) (1943), p. 439) whether Fourier-Stieltjes coefficients of the Minkowski's question mark function vanish at infinity.

Abstract:By a formula of Villegas, the Mahler measures of $P_k(x,y)=x+1/x+y+1/y+k$ can be written as a Kronecker-Eisenstein series, where $k=\frac{4}{\sqrt{\lambda(2\tau)}}$ and $\lambda(\tau)=16\frac{\eta(\tau/2)^8\eta(2\tau)^{16}}{\eta(\tau)^{24}}$ is the modular lambda-function. If $\tau$ is taken to be CM points, we can use Villegas's formula to express the Mahler measures of $P_k$ as $L$-values of some modular forms. We prove that if $\tau_0$ is a CM point, then $\lambda(2\tau_0)$ is an algebraic number whose degree can be bounded by the product of the class numbers of $D_{\tau_0}$ and $D_{4\tau_0}$, where $D_{\tau}$ stands for the discriminant of a CM point $\tau$. Then we use the CM points with class numbers $\leqslant 2$ to obtain identities linking the Mahler measures of $P_k$ to $L$-values of modular forms. We get 35 identities, 5 of which are proven results, the others do not seem to appear in the literature. We also verify some cases of Beilinson's conjecture for elliptic curves over real quadratic fields that related to our discovery. Our method might also be used to other polynomial familys that mentioned in Villegas's paper.

Abstract:The goal of this short note is to bring attention to an interesting ring: the ring of $\mathbb Z$-valued functions on $\mathbb Z$ whose restrictions to all finite sets are given by polynomials with integer coefficients. My interest in these functions was inspired by the work of Sayak Sengupta on iterations of integer polynomials, but this and related objects appear to be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this article, we study the Mahler measures of more than 500 families of reciprocal polynomials defining genus 2 and genus 3 curves. We numerically find relations between the Mahler measures of these polynomials with special values of L-functions. We also numerically discover more than 100 identities between Mahler measures involving different families of polynomials defining genus 2 and genus 3 curves. Furthermore, we study the Mahler measures of several families of nonreciprocal polynomials defining genus 2 curves and numerically find relations between the Mahler measures of these families and special values of L-functions of elliptic curves. We also find identities between the Mahler measures of these nonreciprocal families and tempered polynomials defining genus 1 curves. We will explain these relations by considering the pushforward and pullback of certain elements in K2 of curves defined by these polynomials and applying Beilinson’s conjecture on K2 of curves. We show that there are two and three explicit linearly independent elements in K2 of certain families of genus 2 and genus 3 curves, respectively.

Abstract:We show that the distribution of the values of Fekete polynomials $F_p$ on the unit circle is governed, as $p\to\infty$, by an explicit limiting (non-Gaussian) random point process.This allows us to prove that the Mahler measure of $F_p$ satisfies $$M_0(F_p)\sim k_0\sqrt{p},$$ as $p\to\infty$ where $k_0=0.74083\dots,$ thus solving an old open problem. Further, we obtain an asymptotic formula for all moments $\|F_p\|_q$ with $0<q<\infty,$ resolving another open problem and improving previous results of Günther and Schmidt (who treated the case $q=2k,$ $k\in\mathbb{N}$).

Abstract:Using classical results of Rogers bounding the $L^2$-norm of Siegel transforms, we give bounds on the heights of approximate integral solutions of quadratic equations and error terms in the quantiative Oppenheim theorem of Eskin-Margulis-Mozes for almost every quadratic form. Further applications yield quantitative information on the distribution of values of random polynomials at integral points.

Abstract:S. Frisch, showed that the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix ring IntTn(K)(Tn(D)):={f∈Tn(K)[x]|f(Tn(D))⊆Tn(D)} is a ring, where D is an integral domain with field of fractions K . Let R1⊆R2 be commutative rings with identity. In this paper, we study the set IntTn(R2)(Ω,Tn(R1)):={f∈Tn(R2)[x]|f(Ω)⊆Tn(R1)} for some subsets Ω⊆Tn(R1) . We generalize Frisch's result and show that IntTn(R2)(Tn(R1)):=IntTn(R2)(Tn(R1),Tn(R1)) is a ring. We state a lower bound for the Krull dimension of the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix rings. Finally, we state the concept of Skolem closure of an ideal of the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix rings and as a consequence, we obtain a classification of maximal ideals of the integer-valued polynomials on upper triangular matrix rings.

Abstract:The Mahler measure of a polynomial is a measure of complexity formed by taking the modulus of the leading coefficient times the modulus of the product of its roots outside the unit circle. The roots of a real degree N polynomial chosen uniformly from the set of polynomials of Mahler measure at most 1 yield a Pfaffian point process on the complex plane. When N is large, with probability tending to 1, the roots tend to the unit circle, and we investigate the asymptotics of the scaled kernel in a neighborhood of a point on the unit circle. When this point is away from the real axis (on which there is a positive probability of finding a root) the scaled process degenerates to a determinantal point process with the same local statistics (i.e. scalar kernel) as the limiting process formed from the roots of complex polynomials chosen uniformly from the set of polynomials of Mahler measure at most 1. Three new matrix kernels appear in a neighborhood of ±1 which encode information about the correlations between real roots, between complex roots and between real and complex roots. Away from the unit circle, the kernels converge to new limiting kernels, which imply among other things that the expected number of roots in any open subset of C disjoint from the unit circle converges to a positive number. We also give ensembles with identical statistics drawn from two-dimensional electrostatics with potential theoretic weights, and normal matrices chosen with regard to their topological entropy as actions on Euclidean space.

Abstract:A classical problem of D. H. Lehmer suggests the study of distributions of elements of Z/pZ of opposite parity to the multiplicative inverse mod p. Zhang initiated this problem and found an asymptotic evaluation of the number of such elements. In this paper, an asymptotic formula for the fourth moment of the error term of Zhang is proved, from which one may see that Zhang's error term is optimal up to the logarithm factor. The method also applies to the case of arbitrary positive integral moments.
