Abstract:We study the variation of admissible representations of $p$-adic $GL_n$ in families from the point of view of the Bernstein--Zelevinsky classification and show that the ramified parts of these families are rigid. We explain how to apply our results in the context of $GL_n$-eigenvarieties.

Abstract:We define a certain Hecke theoretic notion of family of smooth admissible representations of $GL_n(F)$, or of products of such groups, where $F$ is a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero. While this notion of family is rather weak a priori, we show that it implies strong rigidity properties for the Bernstein-Zelevinsky presentations of the members of such families, as well as for the variation of their epsilon factors (attached to arbitrary functorial lifts). Examples of such families come often from the theory of eigenvarieties, and in this case our results imply analyticity properties for the epsilon factors of the members of these families.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that a $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$-eigenvariety is étale over the (pure) weight space at non-critical Shalika points, and construct multi-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions varying over the resulting Shalika components. Our constructions hold in tame level 1 and Iwahori level at $p$, and give $p$-adic variation of $L$-values (of regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$ admitting Shalika models) over the whole pure weight space. In the case of $\mathrm{GL}(4)$, these results have been used by Loeffler and Zerbes to prove cases of the Bloch--Kato conjecture for $\mathrm{GSp}(4)$. Our main innovations are: (a) the introduction and systematic study of `Shalika refinements' of local representations of $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$, evaluating their attached local twisted zeta integrals; and (b) the $p$-adic interpolation of representation-theoretic branching laws for $\mathrm{GL}(n) \times \mathrm{GL}(n)$ inside $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$. Using (b), we give a construction of multi-variable $p$-adic functionals on the overconvergent cohomology groups for $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$, interpolating the zeta integrals of (a). We exploit the resulting non-vanishing of these functionals to prove our main arithmetic applications.

Abstract:Let $p$ and $l$ be distinct odd primes, and let $F$ be a $p$-adic field. Let $\pi$ be a generic smooth integral representation of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$ over an $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_l$-vector space. Let $E$ be a finite Galois extension of $F$ with $[E:F]=l$. Let $\Pi$ be the base change lift of $\pi$ to the group ${\rm GL}_n(E)$. Let $\mathbb{W}^0(\Pi, \psi_E)$ be the lattice of $\overline{\mathbb{Z}}_l$-valued functions in the Whittaker model of $\Pi$, with respect to a standard ${\rm Gal}(E/F)$-equivaraint additive character $\psi_E:E\rightarrow \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_l^\times$. We show that the unique generic sub-quotient of the zero-th Tate cohomology group of $\mathbb{W}^0(\Pi, \psi_E)$ is isomorphic to the Frobenius twist of the unique generic sub-quotient of the mod-$l$ reduction of $\pi$. We first prove a version of this result for a family of smooth generic representations of ${\rm GL}_n(E)$ over the integral Bernstein center of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$. Our methods use the theory of Rankin-selberg convolutions and simple identities of local $\gamma$-factors. The results of this article remove the hypothesis that $l$ does not divide the pro-order of ${\rm GL}_{n-1}(F)$ in our previous work.

Abstract:We give a classification theorem for certain four-dimensional families of geometric $\lambda$-adic Galois representations attached to a pure motive. More precisely, we consider families attached to the cohomology of a smooth projective variety defined over $\Q$ with coefficients in a quadratic imaginary field, non-selfdual and with four different Hodge-Tate weights. We prove that the image is as large as possible for almost every $\lambda$ provided that the family is irreducible and not induced from a family of smaller dimension. If we restrict to semistable families an even simpler classification is given. A version of the main result is given for the case where the family is attached to an automorphic form.

On modular representations of inner forms of $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over a local non-archimedean field

Abstract:Let $\mathrm{F}$ be a local non-archimedean field of residue characteristic $p$ and $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$ an algebraic closure of a finite field of characteristic $\ell \neq p$. We extend the results of Lapid and Mínguez concerning $\square$-irreducible representations of inner forms of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathrm{F})$ to representations over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$. As applications, we compute the Godement-Jacquet $L$-factor for any smooth irreducible representation over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$ and show that the local factors of a representation agree with the ones of its $\mathrm{C}$-parameter defined by Kurinczuk and Matringe. Moreover, we reprove that the classification of irreducible representations via multisegments due to Vignéras and Mínguez-Sécherre is indeed exhaustive without using the classification of Ariki and Mathas of simple modules of Hecke algebras. Finally, we characterize the irreducible constituents of certain parabolically induced representations, as was already done by Zelevinsky over $\mathbb{C}$.

Abstract:Congruence families, i.e., $\ell$-adic convergence for well-defined arithmetic subsequences, is a commonplace phenomenon for the coefficients of modular forms. Such families superficially resemble one another, but they often vary substantially in difficulty. Moreover, the critical difficulties associated with a given family will generally manifest themselves at the end stages of an attempted proof. We give a conjectured classification system of congruence families for the coefficients of modular eta quotients by studying the topology of the associated modular curve.

Abstract:We construct an exact functor from the category of Harish-Chandra modules of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb C)$ to the category of finite-dimensional modules of graded Hecke algebras of type A. We show that the functor preserves parabolically induced modules, standard modules, irreducible modules, unitary modules and Dirac series. We also use the functor to connect a Bernstein-Zelevinsky type functor for graded Hecke algebra side to the tensor product for $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb C)$ side. Some applications are also discussed.

Abstract:We prove the global triangulation conjecture for families of refined p-adic representations under a mild condition. That is, for a refined family, the associated family of (phi, Gamma)-modules admits a global triangulation on a Zariski open and dense subspace of the base that contains all regular non-critical points. We also determine a large class of points which belongs to the locus of global triangulation. Furthermore, we prove that all the specializations of a refined family are trianguline. In the case of the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve, our results provide the key ingredient for showing its properness in a subsequent work.
On $p$-refined Friedberg-Jacquet integrals and the classical symplectic locus in the $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ eigenvariety

Abstract:Friedberg--Jacquet proved that if $\pi$ is a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{A})$, $\pi$ is a functorial transfer from $\mathrm{GSpin}_{2n+1}$ if and only if a global zeta integral $Z_H$ over $H = \mathrm{GL}_n \times \mathrm{GL}_n$ is non-vanishing on $\pi$. We conjecture a $p$-refined analogue: that any $P$-parahoric $p$-refinement $\tilde\pi^P$ is a functorial transfer from $\mathrm{GSpin}_{2n+1}$ if and only if a $P$-twisted version of $Z_H$ is non-vanishing on the $\tilde\pi^P$-eigenspace in $\pi$. This twisted $Z_H$ appears in all constructions of $p$-adic $L$-functions via Shalika models. We prove various results towards the conjecture by connecting it to the study of classical symplectic families in the $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$ eigenvariety. If $\pi$ is spherical at $p$, there are $(2n)!$ attached $p$-refinements to Iwahori level; we conjecture the dimensions of such families through each of these, prove the upper bound unconditionally, and (by constructing the families) prove the lower bound under a non-critical slope assumption. For example, for $\mathrm{GL}_4$, we conjecture that (modulo 1-dimensional trivial variation) 8 refinements vary in 2-dimensional symplectic families, 8 in 1-dimensional symplectic families, and prove 8 do not vary in any symplectic family.

Abstract:We construct three-variable $p$-adic families of Galois cohomology classes attached to Rankin convolutions of modular forms, and prove an explicit reciprocity law relating these classes to critical values of L-functions. As a consequence, we prove finiteness results for the Selmer group of an elliptic curve twisted by a 2-dimensional odd irreducible Artin representation when the associated $L$-value does not vanish.

Abstract:We prove that the set of `low rank' points on sufficiently large fibre powers of families of curves are not Zariski dense. The recent work of Dimitrov-Gao-Habegger and Kühne (and Yuan) imply the existence of a bound which is exponential in the rank, and the Zilber-Pink conjecture implies a bound which is linear in the rank. Our main result is a (slightly weaker) linear bound for `low ranks'. We also prove analogous results for isotrivial families (with relaxed conditions on the rank) and for solutions to the $S$-unit equation, where the bounds are now sub-exponential in the rank. Our proof involves a notion of the Chabauty-Coleman(-Kim) method in families (or, in some sense, for simply connected varieties). For Zariski non-density, we use the recent work of Blàzquez-Sanz, Casale, Freitag and Nagloo on Ax-Schanuel theorems for foliations on principal bundles.

Affine Hecke algebras for Langlands parameters

Abstract:It is well-known that affine Hecke algebras are very useful to describe the smooth representations of any connected reductive p-adic group G, in terms of the supercuspidal representations of its Levi subgroups. The goal of this paper is to create a similar role for affine Hecke algebras on the Galois side of the local Langlands correspondence. To every Bernstein component of enhanced Langlands parameters for G we canonically associate an affine Hecke algebra (possibly extended with a finite R-group). We prove that the irreducible representations of this algebra are naturally in bijection with the members of the Bernstein component, and that the set of central characters of the algebra is naturally in bijection with the collection of cuspidal supports of these enhanced Langlands parameters. These bijections send tempered or (essentially) square-integrable representations to the expected kind of Langlands parameters. Furthermore we check that for many reductive p-adic groups, if a Bernstein component B for G corresponds to a Bernstein component B^\vee of enhanced Langlands parameters via the local Langlands correspondence, then the affine Hecke algebra that we associate to B^\vee is Morita equivalent with the Hecke algebra associated to B. This constitutes a generalization of Lusztig's work on unipotent representations. It might be useful to establish a local Langlands correspondence for more classes of irreducible smooth representations.

Abstract:We prove a descent criterion for certain families of smooth representations of GL_n(F) (F a p-adic field) in terms of the gamma factors of pairs constructed in previous work of the second author. We then use this descent criterion, together with a theory of gamma factors for families of representations of the Weil group W_F (developed previously by both authors), to prove a series of conjectures, due to the first author, that give a complete description of the integral Bernstein center in terms of Galois theory and the local Langlands correspondence. An immediate consequence is the conjectural "local Langlands correspondence in families" of Emerton and Helm.

Quotients of abelian varieties by reflection groups

Abstract:We prove (by a case-by-case analysis) a conjecture of Bernstein/Schwarzman to the effect that quotients of abelian varieties by suitable actions of (complex) reflection groups are weighted projective spaces, and show that this remains true after reduction to finite characteristic (including characteristics dividing the order of the group!). We also show that an analogous statement holds (with five explicitly enumerated exceptions) for actions of quaternionic reflection groups on supersingular abelian varieties.

Abstract:We state a conjecture, local Langlands in families, connecting the centre of the category of smooth representations on $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{q}^{-1}]$-modules of a quasi-split $p$-adic group $\mathrm{G}$ (where $q$ is the cardinality of the residue field of the underlying local field), the ring of global functions on the stack of Langlands parameters for $\mathrm{G}$ over $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{q}^{-1}]$, and the endomorphisms of a Gelfand-Graev representation for $\mathrm{G}$. For a class of classical $p$-adic groups (symplectic, unitary, or split odd special orthogonal groups), we prove this conjecture after inverting an integer depending only on $\mathrm{G}$. Along the way, we show that the local Langlands correspondence for classical $p$-adic groups (1) preserves integrality of $\ell$-adic representations; (2) satisfies an "extended" (generic) packet conjecture; (3) is compatible with parabolic induction up to semisimplification (generalizing a result of Moussaoui), hence induces a semisimple local Langlands correspondence; and (4) the semisimple correspondence is compatible with automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$ fixing $\sqrt{q}$.
