Abstract:The previous literature suggests that citizens calculate the benefits of immigrants by assessing their impact on economic prospects. This paper argues that a type of social demand-the demand for marriage-also induces support for more liberal immigration policies. We conducted a survey experiment with 3,000 adults in China, where the population faces a shortage of women in the marriage market. The respondents were assigned to four groups, namely, a control group, a group with low-skilled worker shortage cues, a group with high-skilled worker shortage cues, and a group with marriage market crisis cues. We found that the marriage crisis treatment was effective to male respondents but not to female respondents. A supplementary examination of cross-national survey data showed that a gender imbalance at birth can elicit citizens' higher support for immigration in 13 Asian countries/regions. The results show that, other than economic considerations, citizens' concerns about marriage market competition can also stimulate immigration support.
Seeking Western Men: Divergent Trajectories of China’s “Email-Order Brides”

Abstract:Based on 17 months of ethnography at three different online dating agencies in southern China, this article examines the life histories and decision-making processes of women who seek marriages with Western men. Most women in my study are middle-aged (over 40), divorced, and come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. I explore how emerging inequalities brought on by China's transition from state socialism toward a global market economy shaped their shared desires to seek out-migration via marriage. My work is set against the backdrop of China's economic ascendance on the world stage alongside a relative decline of the West. I compare how Chinese women from diverse class backgrounds envision a relatively homogenous group of men: Western men in agriculture, manufacturing, and small business sectors who feel they have been left behind by globalization. My results show that China's uneven development has fractured the local marriage migration market into different niche sectors, where each sector is occupied by women who envision Western men and the relative decline of the West differently due to differences in their own social positions and access to resources in China. Their social positions are, in turn, shaped by the intersectionality of many factors including age, generation, parental status, income, etc., which I explore in depth in this article. This study illuminates the importance of adopting a more intersectional approach to analyses of migration as our world becomes increasingly decentered, diversified, and yet polarized.

The Making of a Modern Self: Vietnamese Women Experiencing Transnational Mobility at the China–Vietnam Border

Abstract:China–Vietnam marriages attract increasing public attention in China and trigger many discussions on the phenomenon of ‘Vietnamese brides.’ The discussions are often linked to the rapid modernization of the border areas since the 1990s, caused by the re-opening of the border, the prosperity of the transnational economy and the increase of cross-border mobility between the two countries. Guided by the qualitative research paradigm, 30 Vietnamese women in cross-border intimate relationships with Chinese men were interviewed to examine their motivation and their experience of transnational mobility at the China–Vietnam border. By challenging the popular image of Vietnamese women as pitiable and ignorant country bumpkins in public discourse, this study acknowledges that these women, like other modern women, have the capacity to imagine and desire, to make decisions and to act, caring a lot about self-development and expression. Comparably, these women may not be able to enjoy the relatively rich resources and capital like the economic elites, but they have strategically manipulated multifaceted and contradictory realities at the specific context of the China–Vietnam border to better their economic circumstances, and to reshape their personal, familial, and social relationships.

Abstract:This paper examines marriage migration in Asia through the lens of transnationalism. We pull together results from various studies we conducted on marriage migration in Vietnam and Taiwan between 2004 and 2010, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Our main contention is that marriage migration constitutes a significant vector of social change for both sending and receiving areas of migrants. We examine the gendered aspects of this transformation, since the vast majority of migrant spouses in Asia are women. We use the concept of ‘transnationalism from below’ to frame the social impact of marriage migration. In this paper, we first review activities of marriage migrants and their families that constitute either economic or social transnationalism. In the second part, we discuss how these transnational activities contribute to social change in both societies. In brief, the paper shows the far-reaching significance of this migration flow for the region and aims to move forward the conceptualization of marriage migration in Asia.

Abstract:One of the under-studied effects of global migration has been an increase in transnational marriages. This phenomenon has greatly impacted Taiwan as women from Southeast Asian nations and Mainland China, through professional marriage brokers or personal contacts, enter into marriages with Taiwanese men. How well these women adapt to Taiwan's culture and learn its local languages is studied through the lens of two theories of intercultural communication: Kim's theory of cross-cultural adaptation and Kramer's theory of cultural fusion. Based upon in-depth interviews with 28 women, results show some support for both theories. However, the postulates of cultural fusion demonstrate a better fit: Learning is an additive process; long-term association with co-ethnics appears to correlate with greater satisfaction and adaptation; and women's negotiated identities follow a range of outcomes.
Marriage in an Immigrant Society: Education and the Transition to First Marriage in Hong Kong

Abstract:Background: The prevalence of marriages between locals and immigrants is likely to alter the relationship between education and marriage. However, there has been little empirical research on the implications of a large immigration population for the relationship between education and marriage. Hong Kong provides an ideal setting to investigate this issue. Methods: This article examines the role of education in union formation for both men and women across two birth cohorts and the effect of education on marriages with local or immigrant spouses, using data from the 2011 Hong Kong Population Census and the Hong Kong Panel Study of Social Dynamics [HKPSSD]. Results: In contrast to findings in many other societies, local men's education has little effect on union formation. Further analysis reveals that their education is positively associated with marrying a Hong Kong-born spouse but negatively associated with marrying an immigrant spouse born in mainland China. For local women, education has a negative effect on marrying either local or immigrant spouses, but this effect diminishes over time. These findings suggest an increasing importance of women's economic prospects in union formation in a society like Hong Kong where there is a high cost of living. Contribution: As the first study analysing the role of education in men and women's marriages, over time and with local or immigrant spouses in Hong Kong, this article shows the growing importance of women's economic prospects in union formation. It also demonstrates that the presence of an enlarged pool of potential partners due to immigration can moderate the commonly assumed positive relationship between men's education and marriage.

Abstract:Studies up to now have shown the difference in partner/spouse selection between men and women of ethnic minority groups overseas but lack in-depth exploration of the reasons behind such selection. This study aims to fill the gap by exploring the different types of motivations that drive men and women of ethnic minorities to select their partners/spouses. Using quantitative and qualitative data, we compared partner/spouse selection dynamics and motivations among overseas Chinese men and women. Our study on Chinese people living in Belgium reveal significant gender differences in spouse selection between men and women, with more women likely to go in for intermarriage than men. In our interviews, we found that the underlying motivations for women’s preference for intermarriage lie in their fondness for Western family culture and their desire to make the host country their permanent home. We also found that in their partner-spouse selection, women were less influenced by social norms or pressure from parents and family, which are the main factors driving endogamy. Although the gender ratio in the marriage market is more or less even, cultural factors and possible different adaptation methods of men and women prompt Chinese people to consider or reject their compatriots as suitable partners/spouses.

Abstract:Abstract The global development has led to a huge increase in the number of cross-border mobile employment, and many advanced industrialized countries have introduced cross-border migrant workers in order to continue their economic development. Taiwan began to introduce foreign migrant workers in 1989, and has since opened up various application qualifications and quotas for migrant workers in different sectors. By the end of 2022, there were about 228,000 Vietnamese industrial migrant workers in Taiwan, which was the largest number, accounting for 45% of the total number. Therefore, this study discusses the distribution of countries from which Taiwan imports foreign workers and the countries to which Vietnam exports workers, and compares and analyzes the relevant laws and policies of Taiwan government and Vietnamese government. In addition, issues related to migrant worker policies and human resources agencies are discussed through in-depth interviews with human resources agents and questionnaires on Vietnamese migrant workers in Taiwan. Although many past studies focused on foreign workers, in recent years, the demand for industrial workers has changed due to the pandemic, and Taiwan has faced low birth rate, aging and other factors, which has also impacted the labor supply in the job market. Under this situation, the problem of labor shortage may become more serious. Therefore, this study also analyzes the influence of pandemic and other related factors, hoping that the research results can provide references for related fields of industry, official and university. Racial and Gender Stereotypes in Immigration Attitudes: Evidence from China

Abstract:How do racial and gender stereotypes affect immigration attitudes? Studies on this topic have focused primarily on developed rather than developing countries. To close the gap, we explore the phenomenon in China, a developing economy that is evolving from a source of emigration to a destination of immigration with its citizens having little direct experience with immigrants. Via two waves of survey experiments with over 4,000 respondents, we find that gender cues of female immigrants increase public approval of immigration and liberal immigration policies, while racial cues of Black immigrants discourage them. Further analysis reveals that gender bias is likely the product of sociopsychological concerns over cultural threats and that racial bias stems from concerns over public safety. Our findings contribute to the literature on the racial stratification and discrimination of immigrants in the context of developing countries.
Exceptional membership and liminal space of identity: Student migration from Taiwan to China

Abstract:The opening of China’s economy has attracted an inflow of Taiwanese migrants, including student migration for higher education. Taiwanese migrants in China have created a ‘transnational social field,’ which is simultaneously an exceptional space of sovereignty and a liminal terrain of identity. Based on in-depth interviews with 61 Taiwanese students in China, this article looks into the paradoxes between nationalization and globalization at the intersection of state policy, migration trajectory, and identity politics. The Chinese government has offered Taiwanese citizens exceptional membership and privileged access to college admission, in order to uphold China’s claim of sovereignty over Taiwan and promote the agenda of reunification. Taiwanese students capitalize on such institutional privilege and cultural ties to facilitate their transnational mobility and flexible capital accumulation. They also develop different strategies to negotiate their ethnic or national identification: assimilating as Chinese, reasserting a Taiwanese identity, and claiming a cosmopolitan identity.

Intimate Relationships And Mobility Intentions Of Thai International Students In Chinese Universities: A Gendered Analysis

Abstract:Although extant research has found family critical in understanding international student mobility, studies focusing on the role of intimate relationships, such as marriage or romantic relationships, are few in number and typically with a backdrop of the Global South-to-North mobility pattern. Based on data collected among Thai nationals studying in Chinese universities, intimate relationships are found in this study to pull partners across borders towards each other. This general trend nevertheless hides a stark disparity between genders in the sense that people are attracted by intimate relationships and in their mobility intentions. Contrary to popular belief, women in this study are less attached to their intimate relationships. Instead, they strategically plan on going to places where better chances for self-realisation exist. By examining Thai female international students' cross-cultural experiences and real-life situations, we suggest that their compatriot intimate relationships often fail them because more than their share of household chores are stuck with them, even when they study abroad. Female international students in this article are neither willingly docile nor overtly rebellious, rather, they practically manoeuvre and cope according to their transnational circumstances and capabilities. The implication of these more mobile female international students on gender relationships is also discussed in light of Bourdieu's practice theory. Results in this study contribute to the understanding of international student mobility by focusing on intimate relationships and by incorporating a gendered and critical perspective.

Abstract:After investigating the migrant labors working in Dongcheng District of Beijing,the author finds out the different situations of love and marriage of the migrant labors of different genders.It demonstrates that the men of migrant labors mainly select their wives from their friends or the women around them,yet the women would mainly find their husbands by the matchmaking of their fellow townsmen.In terms of the standards of spouse selection,men pay more attention to the health condition and appearance of women,yet women care more about men’s incomes and working stability.What is more,women might be influenced by their parents’ opinions in spouse selection much more than men.The investigation also manifests that there is a generation gap in the views of marriage among the migrant female labors.The young ladies are more open-minded and they could more easily accept premarital sex.The Logistic Regression Analysis on the influence of the views of love and marriage of migrant labors by different life experiences in cities proves that the frequency and time of surfing on the Internet has a great impact on their attitude toward sex.After getting to know about the modern value through the Internet,the migrant labors change their attitude toward love and marriage and gradually ac-cept premarital sex.
Does the Shortage of Marriageable Women Induce the Trafficking of Women for Forced Marriage? Evidence From China

Abstract:This article examines whether a shortage of marriageable women induces trafficking of women for forced marriage in China as commonly expected. I assemble a data set of 1,215 transactions of women for forced marriage from 2010-2018 using court documents. My analysis suggests that the trafficking of women is not a direct consequence of the local shortage of marriageable women. The fundamental causes are entrenched patriarchal values as indicated by a high local sex ratio at birth, sex-specific internal migration, and the marriage squeeze endured by socially marginalized men in the context of a shortage of women in the population.

Examination of the mouth revealed that a large polypoid mass was hanging from the nasopharynx (figure, B). This mass had anteriorly and superiorly displaced the uvula and soft palate, both of which were edematous. The mass was mobile on palpation with a tongue depressor. On examination with a nasal speculum, the nasal cavities appeared to be normal. However, nasal endoscopy detected a whitish soft-tissue mass in the posterior nasal cavity that appeared to arise from the left middle meatus (figure, C). On palpation with a suction tube, the mass was mobile. A diagnosis of an antrochoanal polyp was made. The patient was taken to the operating room for an endoscopic excision of the polyp. Telescopic examination of the left nasal cavity confirmed that the mass in the posterior nasal cavity had originated in the left middle meatus. After the intranasal component of the mass was separated, the nasopharyngeal portion was grasped with a large cup forceps and removed via the oral cavity (figure, D). Spatial Exclusion of Vietnamese Brides in Sino-Vietnam Cross-border Marriages: A Case Study of Qiaotou Village in Yunnan

Abstract:With the development of the thoughts of"cultural turn"and"spatial turn",geographic space has been subjectivized and has participated in the construction of social ideology.Its research perspective,from macroscopic to microscopic,focuses more on"offbeat groups"who are excluded and marginalized by the mainstream society in a micro-scale domain.It has been a long time since the interaction and the intermarriage between the nationals across the Sino-Vietnam border due to their geographical proximity and ethnic and cultural similarities.The number of the transnational marriages in this area has increases annually since China and Vietnam successively carried out the"Reform and Opening-up"policy,especially after the normalization of the Sino-Vietnam relations in 1991.The Vietnamese brides,due to the lack of legal status,are often excluded from the mainstream society in the everyday life.The Social Exclusion Theory,developed in Europe in the 1990s,originated in the study of social inequality and now has become a core concept of interpreting various social problems.This article,with the Qiaotou administrative village of Hekou County,Yunnan Province as the location for case study and with a qualitative research method,in a micro-spatial scale explores the social exclusion suffered by the Vietnamese brides.The researchers investigated in January 2012 and August 2012 respectively 10 Vietnamese brides on the spots of 7 villages.The research findings are shown as follows: 1) Without legal status,the Vietnamese brides have no access to buying train tickets and to checking in at hotels,which make their activities restricted in the terms of public space;2) The Vietnamese brides and the indigenous villagers,being"Others"and"Subjects"respectively in"place",form two opposed"spaces".The Vietnamese brides,without citizenship and excluded from the village’s public space,have no access to the village’ s political affairs and social activities.Even worse,the Vietnamese brides are monitored by the indigenous villagers who try to prevent them from escaping,which makes them live in a situation somewhat similar to"Panopticon"proposed by Jerome Bentham and developed by Michel Foucault.3) The inferior spatial position of the Vietnamese brides’houses worsens the social exclusion of the Vietnamese brides.The spatial analysis of a house owned by an indigenous villager who married a Vietnamese bride reveals that the spatial marginalization caused by the house being on the edge of the village—an inferior spatial position,hinders the communications between the Vietnamese brides and the indigenous villagers.This study reveals that the spatial exclusion of the Vietnamese brides are due to their lack of legal status,economic inferiority and stigmatization imposed by the public opinions.This study enriches,in terms of the micro-space,both the Social Exclusion Theory and its related empirical research.

Exclusion or Inclusion: National Differential Regulations of Migrant Workers' Employment, Social Protection, and Migrations Policies on Im/Mobilities in East Asia-Examples of South Korea and Taiwan

Abstract:Low fertility rates and an aging society, growing long-term care needs, and workforce shortages in professional, industrial, and care sectors are emerging issues in South Korea and Taiwan. Both governments have pursued economic/industrial growth as productive welfare capitalism and enacted preferred selective migration policies to recruit white-collar migrant workers (MWs) as mobile elites, but they have also adopted regulations and limitations on blue-collar MWs through unfree labor relations, precarious employment, and temporary legal status to provide supplemental labor. In order to demonstrate how multiple policy regulations from a national level affect MWs' precarity of labor in their receiving countries, which in turn affect MWs' im/mobilities, this article presents the growing trends of transnational MWs, regardless of them being high- or low-skilled MWs, and it evaluates four dimensions of labor migration policies-MWs' working and employment conditions, social protection, union rights and political participation, and access to permanent residency in both countries. We found that the rights and working conditions of low-skilled MWs in Korea and Taiwan are improving slowly, but still lag behind those of high-skilled MWs which also affects their public health and well-being. The significant difference identified here is that MWs in Taiwan can organize labor unions, which is strictly prohibited in Korea; pension protection also differs between the nations. Additionally, an application for permanent residency is easier for high-skilled migrant workers compared with low-skilled MWs and both the Korean and Taiwanese immigration policies differentiate the entry and resident status for low-skilled and professional MWs from dissimilar class backgrounds. Policy recommendations for both countries are also discussed.
An interesting phenomenon in immigrant spouses and elderly suicides in Taiwan

Abstract:Background: Immigration is a global issue. Taiwan has a high proportion of immigrant spouses who take care of the aging parents-in-law at home mainly based on filial piety. Difficulties in communication in many aspects of daily life occur between the elderly and immigrant spouses, and result in the elderly becoming vulnerable and thus, influencing their psychological well-being. Although past studies demonstrated that due to cultural differences, employed foreign care providers negatively influenced elder care quality (e.g., care receipts' health or mortality rates), no studies have explored whether immigrant spouses, as family caregivers, have any influence on elderly suicides due to cross cultural communication differences. Objective: To address the above gap, this study was to examine the static relationship between immigrant spouses and elderly suicides. Method: National-level authority data, comprising a 10-year longitudinal nationwide sample, were used. The number of immigrant spouses was treated as a proxy of cultural differences. Twelve models of outcomes with and without city- and time-fixed effects were conducted using panel data analysis. Results: Descriptive statistics of the study variables are provided. The results revealed that overall the number of immigrant spouses had a positive correlation with suicides in older adults. Further, the gender of immigrant spouses had different impacts on elderly suicides. Conclusions: This is the first study to examine relation between immigrant spouses and the elderly suicides. The study results provide another viewpoint of understanding of the role of immigrant spouses in elder care, while promoting elder-caregiver interactions for optimal elder health outcomes.
Migration as Feminisation? Chinese Women's Experiences of Work and Family in Australia

Abstract:Like many Western governments, the Australian government increasingly views migration through the lens of economic efficiency, arguing that skilled professionals achieve the best employment outcomes and therefore constitute the ideal migrant. This paper challenges these claims, showing that skilled migrants do not always successfully transfer their skills to new labour markets. It argues that the government's ‘success story’ narrative disguises a much more complex reality, in which migrants’ employment outcomes are shaped by broader social and cultural factors, as well as just economic ones. In particular, it shows that men and women typically experience migration differently, and the challenges of re-negotiating work and care in a new setting often lead to a ‘feminisation’ of women's roles, as they find themselves taking up more traditional gender roles as wives and mothers. Using in-depth interviews with Chinese women and survey data from the Australian government, I show that, in Australia, migrant women often experience downward occupational mobility and a re-orientation away from paid work and towards the domestic sphere.

Hukou-Based Rural–Urban Migration Status and Domestic Violence Against Wives in China: Implications for Policy and Practice

Abstract:Affilia, Ahead of Print. Migration in China has been shaped by the household registration system (hukou) that determines stratified citizenship among migrants. Adopting a feminist intersectionality lens, this study investigated how hukou institution, class, and regionality intersect to have an impact on migrant women's experience of physical, psychological, and sexual violence perpetrated by their husbands. The analysis of nationally representative data from the third wave of Women's Social Status Survey in China (n = 5411) revealed that compared to rural non-migratory wives, (a) return migrants were more likely to experience all three forms of violence; (b) temporary migrants had higher odds to suffer from psychological violence; and (c) permanent migration was not a significant predictor of any form of domestic violence (DV). The findings indicate that migration should be examined in all its complexity from an intersectionality perspective and a within-gender heterogeneity framework may be necessary if we aim to address the multiplicity in migrant women's lives. In practice, attempt to alleviate the negative impact of migration on DV requires reforms or the abolition of the hukou system, and programs and services should be provided in particular to return women migrants who face triple oppression of institutional discrimination, socioeconomic stratification, and regionality marginalization.
Origin-Country Culture, Migration Sequencing, and Female Employment: Variations among Immigrant Women in the United States

Abstract:Recent studies suggest that the employment rates of foreign-born women are related to cultural norms regarding gender and work in their origin countries. However, origin-country culture may have less influence on the labor-supply decisions of women who self-select into migration precisely in order to pursue work abroad. Female migrants self-select on the basis of employment opportunities to varying extents, and it is hard to measure which ones do and which do not. We propose “migration sequencing” (the timing of married partners’ respective migrations) as a proxy for female migrant selectivity with respect to gender-role beliefs and work incentives: female lead migrants and individual (unmarried) migrants are, on average, more motivated by labor-market opportunities or human-capital formation than concurrent or follower migrants. Using data from the American Community Survey, we analyze employment rates of female immigrants to the United States from 130 countries. Our results confirm that sending-country cultural legacies have smaller effects for lead and unmarried migrants and the largest effect for follower migrants. Consistent with our theoretical reasoning, lead and unmarried migrants apparently self-select on economic motivations or less traditional gender norms more than do follower migrants, whose employment rates are thus more influenced by origin-country culture. The findings yield a more nuanced understanding of the variable role origin-country culture plays in immigrants’ structural incorporation in the United States and potentially in other destinations as well.
