Abstract:We examined the flexodomains (FDs) in chiral bent-core nematics (BCNs), and demonstrated the morphology changed from parallel stripes in pure BCN to oblique ones in chiral BCNs. While the magnitude of obliqueness angle strongly depended on the concentration of chiral dopant, its sign was determined by the polarity of the driving voltage, thus FDs appeared alternately as symmetrical oblique stripes in the positive and negative half a.c. voltage cycles, respectively. Also the HTP value of chiral dopant in BCNs can be determined based on this phenomenon. The polarity-dependent behavior of FDs can be potentially exploited in photonic devices with a bistable function. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The effective flexoelectric coefficient and flexoelectric polarization are investigated for a bimesogenic liquid crystal CBC11CB with a twist bend nematic phase (Ntb). The effective flexoelectric coefficients for CBC11CB in the ordinary nematic phase (N) are obtained to be much larger in comparison to conventional calamitics, and is almost twice higher for CBC11CB than that reported for another odd symmetric bimesogen. The flexoelectric polarization (Pf) in the N phase is found to be almost 2.5 times higher than in rod-like molecules. Additionally, Pf is obtained to be much larger in the Ntb phase than in the nematic phase.

Abstract:A cultivation procedure for the preparation of a new tempeh-like fermented soybean containing a high level of γ-aminobutyric acid was developed. Steamed soybeans were incubated aerobically with Rhizopus microsporus var. oligosporus IFO 8631 for 20 h, and then anaerobically incubated for 5 h by replacement of the atmosphere with nitrogen. The GABA content in the aerobically fermented soybeans was about 30 mg per 100 g dry fermented soybeans, while the anaerobically cultivation was about 370 mg/100 g dry fermented soybeans. The incubation with several strains of Rhizopus species showed that all of R. microsporus var. oligosporus and R. oryzae examined accumulated GABA in the anaerobically fermented soybeans. In particular, R. microsporus var. oligosporus IFO 32002 and IFO 32003 showed the highest content of GABA (1,740 mg/100 g dry fermented soybeans and 1,500 mg/100 g dry fermented soybeans, respectively). Moreover, the free protein amino acids increased greatly in the fermented soybeans during the anaerobic cultivation.

Abstract:We present a new observation of photorefractive (PR) effects in bent-core nematic (BCN) liquid crystal (LC) materials, where two kinds of optical-induced gratings are demonstrated and compared in pure and surface-doped BCN systems. The experimental results showed that these two kinds of gratings exhibit distinctive different polarization-dependent and angular-dependent behaviors, respectively. Furthermore, we supplied the pure and surface-doped rodlike LC systems for comparison, which revealed that V shape molecular structure of BCN can produce charge carrier more efficiently than rodlike molecular structure does. Thus BCN materials can offer an exciting potential for optical information processing.

Abstract:We develop a Landau theory for bend flexoelectricity in liquid crystals of bent-core molecules. In the nematic phase of the model, the bend flexoelectric coefficient increases as we reduce the temperature toward the nematic to polar phase transition. At this critical point, there is a second-order transition from high-temperature uniform nematic phase to low-temperature nonuniform polar phase composed of twist-bend or splay-bend deformations. To test the predictions of Landau theory, we perform Monte Carlo simulations to find the director and polarization configurations as functions of temperature, applied electric field, and interaction parameters.

Abstract:The recent discovery of nematic liquid crystals with polar order (ferroelectric nematic) has created immense interest. Despite intensive research, several physical properties of this liquid crystal are yet to be investigated and understood. Here, we report experimental studies on the birefringence and exoelectric coefficient of a polar nematic (NF) liquid crystal. Our experiments directly reveal that the splay fluctuations influence the birefringence several degrees above the nonpolar (N) to polar-nematic (NF) phase transition temperature and the heat capacity exponent obtained from the tilt angle fluctuations is close to the value reported in adiabatic scanning calorimetry measurements. The flexoelectric coefficient of the nonpolar nematic phase shows a power-law dependence on temperature. Our results demonstrate a strong coupling of splay fluctuations with electric polarization that reduces the splay elastic constant and consequently enhances the flexoelectric coefficient. These results are important for forthcoming applications as well as for understanding all pretransitional effects in ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals.

Abstract:We describe the unusual electro-optic response of a biaxial bent-core liquid crystal molecule that exhibits an anticlinic, antiferroelectric smectic phase (Sm-CAPA) with a molecular tilt angle close to 45 degrees. In the ground state, the sample shows very low birefringence. A weak applied electric field distorts the antiferroelectric ground state, inducing a small azimuthal reorientation of the molecules on the tilt cone. This results in only a modest increase in the birefringence but an anomalously large (similar to 40 degrees) analog rotation of the extinction direction. This unusual electro-optic response is shown to be a consequence of the molecular biaxiality.

Abstract:Polar nematic liquid crystals have two special features, compared with conventional nematic liquid crystals. First, because of flexoelectricity, the combination of polar order and splay reduces the free energy. Second, because of electrostatics, any splay generates a bound charge density, which increases the free energy. To assess the competition between these two effects, we develop a theory that combines flexoelectricity and electrostatics. The theory predicts a phase diagram that includes ferroelectric, antiferroelectric, and conventional nematic phases.

Abstract:The dipole flexoelectric (FE) polarization in liquid crystals is derived in the thermodynamic limit at small distortions and small density. General microscopic expressions for the FE coefficients are obtained in the case of the uniaxial and biaxial nematic phases composed of C_2v molecules. The expressions involve the one-particle distribution function and the potential energy of two-body short-range interactions. In the case of the biaxial nematic phase, six basic deformations produce FE polarization but there are only five independent FE coefficients.

Observation of "de Vries-like" properties in bent-core molecules

Abstract:"de Vries" liquid crystals, defined by a maximum layer shrinkage of ≤1% from the smectic A to C phase transition, are an integral component of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) displays. Bona fide de Vries materials described in the literature are primarily perfluorinated, polysiloxane and polysilane-terminated rod-like (or calamitic) LCs. Herein, for the first time, we report a series of newly designed achiral unsymmetrical bent-core molecules with terminal alkoxy chains exhibiting similar properties to "de Vries" LCs. The new molecular structure is based on the systematic distribution of four phenyl rings attached via ester and imine linkers having 3-amino-2-methylbenzoic acid as the central core with a bent angle of 147°. Detailed microscopic investigations in differently aligned (planar as well as homeotropic) cells along with SAXS/WAXS studies revealed that the materials exhibited a SmA-SmC phase sequence along with the appearance of the nematic phase at higher temperatures. SAXS measurements divulged the layer spacings (d-spacings) and hence, the layer shrinkage was calculated ranging from 0.19% to 0.68% just below the SmA-SmC transition. The variation of the calculated molecular tilt angle (α) derived from the temperature-dependent SAXS data, followed the power law with exponent values 0.29 ± 0.01 and 0.25 ± 0.01 for compounds 1/10 and 1/12, respectively. The experimental values obtained were very close to the theoretically predicted values for the materials with de Vries-like properties. The analysis of temperature-dependent birefringence studies based on the prediction of the Landau theory, showed a dip across the SmA-SmC phase transition typical of compounds exhibiting the de Vries characteristics. The collective results obtained suggest "de Vries" SmA as a probable model for this bent-core system which may find applications in displays.

Abstract:The flexoelectric (FE) effect provides a linear coupling between electric polarization and orientational deformation in liquid crystals. It influences many electrooptical phenomena and it is used in some bistable nematic devices. A statistical theory of dipole FE polarization in biaxial nematic liquid crystals is used to calculate temperature dependence of order parameters, elastic constants, and FE coefficients. The splitting of the two Meyer FE coefficients and the appearance of new FE coefficients is obtained at the uniaxial-biaxial nematic transition. The ordering of the splited FE coefficients corresponds to the ordering of the splited elastic constants.

Abstract:Mesogenic dimers in the twist-bend nematic phase exhibit much higher flexoelectric polarization than in their uniform nematic phase. In order to theoretically investigate this data, we extend the symmetry based linear elastic theory of the twist-bend nematic phase developed in Phys. Rev. E 92, 030501(R) 2015, by including flexoelectricity under the action of an external electric field perpendicular to the helical axis. We show that at the nematic towards twist-bend nematic transition, a new flexoelectric mode becomes active. Consequently, the present model predicts the increase of the effective flexoelectric coefficient when the system is entering the twist-bend nematic phase. The influence of the flexoelectric coupling on the equilibrium wavevector and the spontaneous heliconical tilt angle are investigated. The electroclinic coefficient is calculated. Finally we argue that the helix could be unwound giving rise to a splay-bend nematic phase.

Abstract:The chiral, heliconical (twist-bend) nematic ground state is reported in an achiral, rigid, bent-core mesogen (UD68). Similar to the nematic twist-bend (N-TB) phase observed in bent molecular dimers, the N-TB phase of UD68 forms macroscopic, smecticlike focal-conic textures and exhibits nanoscale, periodic modulation with no associated modulation of the electron density, i.e., without a detectable lamellar x-ray reflection peak. The N-TB helical pitch is p(TB) similar to 14 nm. When an electric field is applied normal to the helix axis, a weak electroclinic effect is observed, revealing 50-mu m-scale left- and right-handed domains in a chiral conglomerate.

Abstract:Smectics of achiral, tilted bent-core liquid crystal molecules are chiral, but their optical activity is generally small. Here, we study the effect of conformational chirality on optical activity in smectic phases of an achiral, bent-core mesogen, W513. The neat material has a modulated B4 phase, which appears dark under crossed polarizers and shows no observable optical rotation under decrossed polarizers. However, mixtures of W513 with a rod-like mesogen, 8CB, show a conventional B4 phase, in which distinct left- and right-handed chiral domains with opposite optical activity are observed. The optical behavior of the mixtures is consistent with NMR results, which show a splitting of the carbonyl peak of the bent-core molecules into two, indicating a twisted conformation between the two molecular arms of the bent-core molecules as in conventional B4 materials.

Abstract:Wide band dielectric spectroscopy of bent-shaped achiral liquid-crystal dimers 1″-n″-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl) n-alkanes (CBnCB n = 7, 9, 11) has been investigated in a frequency range 0.1 Hz-100 MHz using planar-aligned cells of sample thicknesses ranging from 2 to 10 (μm) over a temperature range that covers both nematic and twist bend nematic phases. Two peaks in the dielectric spectrum in the higher frequency range are assigned to the molecular relaxation processes. The peak at the highest frequency, ∼40 to 80 MHz, is assigned to an internal precessional rotation of a single unit of the dimer around the director. The mode in the next lower frequency range of 2-10 MHz is assigned to the spinning rotation of the dimer around its long axis. This involves fluctuations of the dipole moment of the bent-shaped conformation that is directed along its arrow direction of the bow shape formed by the dimer. The peak in the frequency range 100 kHz-1 MHz can be assigned to the collective fluctuations of the local director with reference to the helical axis of the NTB structure. The dependence of its frequency on temperature is reminiscent of the soft mode observed at the SmA* to SmC* phase transition. This result clearly corresponds to the electro-clinic effect-the response of the director to the applied electric field in an electro-optic experiment. The lowest frequency mode, observed in the frequency range of 0.1 Hz-100 Hz, is identified with the Goldstone mode. This mode is concerned with the long range azimuthal angle fluctuations of the local director. This leads to an alternating compression and expansion of the periodic structure of the NTB phase.

Abstract:Elastic constants of splay K11 , twist K22 , and bend K33 of nematic liquid crystals are often assumed to be equal to each other in order to simplify the theoretical description of complex director fields. Here we present examples of how the disparity of K11 and K33 produces effects that cannot be described in a one-constant approximation. In a lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal, nematic droplets coexisting with the isotropic phase change their shape from a simply-connected tactoid to a topologically distinct toroid as a result of temperature or concentration variation. The transformation is caused by the increase of the splay-to-bend ratio K11/K33 . A phase transition from a conventional nematic to a twist-bend nematic implies that the ratio K11/K33 changes from very large to very small. As a result, the defects caused by an externally applied electric field change the deformation mode of optic axis from bend to splay. In the paraelectric-ferroelectric nematic transition, one finds an inverse situation: K11/K33 changes from small to large, which shapes the domain walls in the spontaneous electric polarization field as conic sections. The polarization field tends to be solenoidal, or divergence-free, a behavior complementary to irrotational curl-free director textures of a smectic A.

Abstract:Liquid crystals formed by acute-angle bent-core (ABC) molecules with a 1,7 naphthalene central core show an intriguing phase behavior with the nematic phase accompanied by poorly understood additional phases. In this work, we characterize the physical properties of an ABC material, such as birefringence, dielectric permittivities, elastic constants, and surface alignment, and present X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies of their ordering. The ABC molecular shape resembling the letter $\lambda$ yields a very small splay elastic constant in the uniaxial nematic phase and results in the formation of a tetragonal positionally ordered columnar phase consisting of molecular columns with a uniform uniaxial director that can be bent but not splayed.

Abstract:Blue phase liquid crystals are not usually considered to exhibit a flexoelectrooptic effect, due to the polar nature of flexoelectric switching and the cubic or amorphous structure of blue phases. Here, we derive the form of the flexoelectric contribution to the Kerr constant of blue phases, and experimentally demonstrate and measure the separate contributions to the Kerr constant arising from flexoelectric and dielectric effects. Hence, a non-polar flexoelectrooptic effect is demonstrated in blue phase liquid crystals, which will have consequences for the engineering of novel blue-phase electrooptic technology.

Abstract:Twist-bend ( Ntb ) and ferroelectric ( NF ) nematic liquid crystals exhibit several novel effects and new physical properties. Here, we report experimental studies on the phase diagram and some physical properties of binary mixtures of CB9CB and RM734 mesogens. Both N- Ntb and N- NF phase transition temperatures and the corresponding enthalpies decrease significantly and, eventually, these transitions disappear at some intermediate compositions, stabilizing wide nematic phase (N). Temperature-dependent birefringence several degrees above the N- Ntb phase transition shows strong director tilt fluctuations. The critical range of the fluctuations increases with the nematic range and the critical exponent is consistent with the mean field. The spontaneous polarization of RM734 decreases drastically with the addition of CB9CB mesogen. The temperature dependence of the splay elastic constant of the mixtures' high-temperature nematic (N) phase strikingly differs from that of the pristine CB9CB and RM734 mesogens.
