Abstract:In this article, we prove that the height function associated with the square-ice model (i.e.~the six-vertex model with $a=b=c=1$ on the square lattice), or, equivalently, of the uniform random homomorphisms from $\mathbb Z^2$ to $\mathbb Z$, has logarithmic variance. This establishes a strong form of roughness of this height function.

Abstract:We survey the connections between the six-vertex (square ice) model of 2d statistical mechanics and random matrix theory. We highlight the same universal probability distributions appearing on both sides, and also indicate related open questions and conjectures. We present full proofs of two asymptotic theorems for the six-vertex model: in the first one the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and GUE-corners process appear; the second one leads to the Tracy-Widom distribution $F_2$. While both results are not new, we found shorter transparent proofs for this text. On our way we introduce the key tools in the study of the six-vertex model, including the Yang-Baxter equation and the Izergin-Korepin formula.

Abstract:In this paper, we study lower tail probabilities of the height function $\mathfrak{h}(M,N)$ of the stochastic six-vertex model. We introduce a novel combinatorial approach to demonstrate that the tail probabilities $\mathbb{P}(\mathfrak{h}(M,N) \ge r)$ are log-concave in a certain weak sense. We prove further that for each $\alpha>0$ the lower tail of $-\mathfrak{h}(\lfloor \alpha N \rfloor, N)$ satisfies a Large Deviation Principle (LDP) with speed $N^2$ and a rate function $\Phi_\alpha^{(-)}$, which is given by the infimal deconvolution between a certain energy integral and a parabola. Our analysis begins with a distributional identity from BO17 [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1608.01564" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1608.01564">arXiv:1608.01564</a>], which relates the lower tail of the height function, after a random shift, with a multiplicative functional of the Schur measure. Tools from potential theory allow us to extract the LDP for the shifted height function. We then use our weak log-concavity result, along with a deconvolution scheme from our earlier paper [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2307.01179" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.01179">arXiv:2307.01179</a>], to convert the LDP for the shifted height function to the LDP for the stochastic six-vertex model height function.

Abstract:We report on Monte-Carlo simulations of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions. In thermal equilibrium such boundary conditions force a fluctuating line separating the disordered region from the perfectly ordered ones. Specifically we study the ice point at which all vertex weights are equal. With high precision the one-point fluctuations of the line are confirmed to be of order $N^{1/3}$ and governed by the Tracy-Widom distribution. Furthermore, the non-universal scaling coefficients are computed for a wide range of interaction strengths. A draft of this paper was completed in January 2019. We improved the presentation and updated references.

Abstract:We study the emptiness formation probability (EFP) in the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions. We present a conjecture according to which at the ice point, i.e., when all the Boltzmann weights are equal, the known multiple integral representation (MIR) for the EFP can be given as a finite-size matrix determinant of Fredholm type. Our conjecture is based on the explicit evaluation of the MIR for particular values of geometric parameters and on two kinds of identities for the boundary correlation function. The obtained representation can be further written as the Fredholm determinant of some linear integral operator. We show that as the geometric parameters of the EFP are tuned to the vicinity of the arctic curve arising in the scaling limit, the conjectured determinant turns into the GUE Tracy–Widom distribution.

On the duality between height functions and continuous spin models

Abstract:We revisit the classical phenomenon of duality between random integer-valued height functions with positive definite potentials and abelian spin models with O(2) symmetry. We use it to derive new results in quite high generality including: a universal upper bound on the variance of the height function in terms of the Green's function (a GFF bound) which among others implies localisation on transient graphs; monotonicity of said variance with respect to a natural temperature parameter; the fact that delocalisation of the height function implies a BKT phase transition in planar models; and also delocalisation itself for height functions on periodic ``almost'' planar graphs.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the asymptotic behaviors of the {\it height} for a birth-and-death process which related to a mean-field model \cite{FFS}(or the Anick-Mitra-Sondhi model \cite{DDM}). Recently, the asymptotic mean value of the height for the model is given in \cite{LAV}. In this paper, first, the asymptotic variance of the height is given, and as a consequence, a weak Law of Large Number for the height is obtained. Second, the centered and normalized height is proved to converge in distribution to a degenerate distribution, this indicates that the desired Central Limit Theorem fails.

Abstract:The square ice is a canonical example of a Coulomb phase in two dimensions: Its ground state is extensively degenerate and satisfies a local constraint on the spin arrangement (the so-called ice rule). In this paper, we use a loop flip algorithm to explore the properties of this ground state that we analyze not in terms of a spin texture, but rather in terms of a spatial distribution of ice-rule satisfying vertices. More specifically, we determine for various lattice sizes the average vertex populations characterizing the ice manifold, the pairwise vertex correlations, and the size distribution of vertex clusters. Comparing these results to those obtained from random, constraint-free vertex tilings, the square ice manifold is found to resemble an almost ideal vertex gas, and the cluster size distribution of ice-rule satisfying vertices is well approximated by percolation theory. Remarkably, this description remains reasonably accurate when monopoles are present in a dilute amount, allowing a direct comparison with experiments. Revising former experimental results on two artificial square ice systems, we illustrate the interest of our approach to spot the presence of a Coulomb phase from a vertex analysis.

We prove that if $1 / f(x, z)$ is twice differentiable, then there exists a constant $\mu$ such that the distribution of $(Y_n - \mu n) / \sqrt{n}$ converges weakly to a normal distribution as $n \to \infty$. If $Y_n = X_1 + \cdots + X_n$, where $(X_n)_n$ are i.i.d. random variables, then we recover the classical (Lindeberg$\unicode{x2013}$Lévy) central limit theorem. We also prove the 2020 conjecture of Defant that if $\pi_n \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ is a uniformly random permutation, then the distribution of $(\operatorname{des} (s(\pi_n)) + 1 - (3 - e) n) / \sqrt{n}$ converges, as $n \to \infty$, to a normal distribution with variance $2 + 2e - e^2$.

Abstract:Let U be a homogeneous variety over rational numbers of some linear algebraic group. Fix an integral model and assume the existence of infinitely many integral points. Then one would like to give an asymptotic count with the help of some height function. In many cases, with the help of measure rigidity of unipotent flows, we reduce this problem to one on equivariant birational geometry. For instance, we show that if G and H are both connected, semisimple, simply connected and without compact factors, then U=G/H is strongly Hardy-Littlewood with respect to certain height function. We also show that when H is "large" in H and both G and H are connected, reductive and without non-trivial Q-characters, then for every equivariant height, the asymptotic of integral points is the same as the volume asymptotic up to a constant. Three concrete examples with explicit heights are also provided to illustrate our approach.

Abstract:In the paper "Uniformity of Mordell-Lang" by Vesselin Dimitrov, Philipp Habegger and Ziyang Gao (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2001.10276" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.10276">arXiv:2001.10276</a>), they use Silverman-Tate's Height Inequality and they give a proof of the same which makes use of Cartier divisors and hence drops the flatness assumption of structure morphisms of compactified abelian schemes. However, their proof makes use of Hironaka's theorem on resolution of singularities which is unknown for fields of positive characteristic. We try to slightly modify their ideas, use blow-ups in place of Hironaka's theorem to make the proof effective for any fields with product formula where heights can be defined and any normal quasi-projective variety as a base. We work in the more general set up of dynamical systems. As an application we prove certain variant of Silverman's Specialization Theorem with restricted hypotheses in higher dimensional bases.

Symmetric functions from the six-vertex model in half-space

Abstract:We study the stochastic six-vertex model in half-space with generic integrable boundary weights, and define two families of multivariate rational symmetric functions. Using commutation relations between double-row operators, we prove a skew Cauchy identity of these functions. In a certain degeneration of the right-hand side of the Cauchy identity we obtain the partition function of the six-vertex model in a half-quadrant, and give a Pfaffian formula for this quantity. The Pfaffian is a direct generalization of a formula obtained by Kuperberg in his work on symmetry classes of alternating-sign matrices. One of our families of symmetric functions admits an integral (sum over residues) formula, and we use this to conjecture an orthogonality property of the dual family. We conclude by studying the reduction of our integral formula to transition probabilities of the (initially empty) asymmetric simple exclusion process on the half-line.

Abstract:A quantitative central limit theorem for the simple symmetric exclusion process (SSEP) on a $d$-dimensional discrete torus is proven. The argument is based on a comparison of the generators of the density fluctuation field of the SSEP and the generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, as well as on an infinite-dimensional Berry-Essen bound for the initial particle fluctuations. The obtained rate of convergence is optimal.

Abstract:The theorem of Shannon-McMillan-Breiman states that for every generating partition on an ergodic system, the exponential decay rate of the measure of cylinder sets equals the metric entropy almost everywhere (provided the entropy is finite). In this paper we prove that the measure of cylinder sets are lognormally distributed for strongly mixing systems and infinite partitions and show that the rate of convergence is polynomial provided the fourth moment of the information function is finite. Also, unlike previous results by Ibragimov and others which only apply to finite partitions, here we do not require any regularity of the conditional entropy function. We also obtain the law of the iterated logarithm and the weak invariance principle for the information function.

Abstract:We consider the disordered monomer-dimer model on general finite graphs with bounded degrees. Under the finite fourth moment assumption on the weight distributions, we prove a Gaussian central limit theorem for the free energy of the associated Gibbs measure with a rate of convergence. The central limit theorem continues to hold under a nearly optimal finite $(2+\epsilon)$-moment assumption on the weight distributions if the underlying graphs are further assumed to have a uniformly subexponential volume growth. This generalizes a recent result by Dey and Krishnan (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2109.12716" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2109.12716">arXiv:2109.12716</a>) who showed a Gaussian central limit theorem in the disordered monomer-dimer model on cylinder graphs. Our proof relies on the idea that the disordered monomer-dimer model exhibits a decay of correlation with high probability. We also establish a central limit theorem for the Gibbs average of the number of dimers where the underlying graph has subexponential volume growth and the edge weights are Gaussians.

Quantitative Equidistribution of Small Points for Canonical Heights

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over a number field $K$ and let $\varphi: X \to X$ a polarized endomorphism of degree $d \geq 2$. Let $\widehat{h}_{\varphi}$ be the canonical height associated to $\varphi$ on $X(\overline{K})$. Given a generic sequence of points $(x_n)$ with $\widehat{h}_{\varphi}(x_n) \to 0$ and a place $v \in M_K$, Yuan [Yua08] has shown that the conjugates of $x_n$ equidistribute to the canonical measure $\mu_{\varphi,v}$. When $v$ is archimedean, we will prove a quantitative version of Yuan's result. We give two applications of our result to polarized endomorphisms $\varphi$ of smooth projective surfaces that are defined over a number field $K$. The first is an exponential rate of convergence for periodic points of period $n$ to the equilibrium measure and the second is an exponential lower bound on the degree of the extension containing all periodic points of period $n$. When $X$ is an abelian variety, we also give an upper bound on the smallest degree of a hypersurface that contains all points $x \in X(\overline{K})$ satisfying $[K(x):K] \leq D$ and $\widehat{h}_X(x) \leq \frac{c}{D^8}$ for some fixed constant $c > 0$ where $\widehat{h}_X$ is the Neron--Tate height for $X$.
