Abstract:In the 1980s, Erdős and Sós initiated the study of Turán problems with a uniformity condition on the distribution of edges: the uniform Turán density of a hypergraph $H$ is the infimum over all $d$ for which any sufficiently large hypergraph with the property that all its linear-size subhypergraphs have density at least $d$ contains $H$. In particular, they asked to determine the uniform Turán densities of $K_4^{(3)-}$ and $K_4^{(3)}$. After more than 30 years, the former was solved in [Israel J. Math. 211 (2016), 349-366] and [J. Eur. Math. Soc. 20 (2018), 1139-1159], while the latter still remains open. Till today, there are known constructions of 3-uniform hypergraphs with uniform Turán density equal to 0, 1/27, 4/27 and 1/4 only. We extend this list by a fifth value: we prove an easy to verify condition for the uniform Turán density to be equal to 8/27 and identify hypergraphs satisfying this condition.

Abstract:The Turán density of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, denoted $\pi(\mathcal{H})$, is the limit of the maximum density of an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph not containing a copy of $\mathcal{H}$, as $n \to \infty$. Denote by $\mathcal{C}_{\ell}$ the $3$-uniform tight cycle on $\ell$ vertices. Mubayi and Rödl gave an ``iterated blow-up'' construction showing that the Turán density of $\mathcal{C}_5$ is at least $2\sqrt{3} - 3 \approx 0.464$, and this bound is conjectured to be tight. Their construction also does not contain $\mathcal{C}_{\ell}$ for larger $\ell$ not divisible by $3$, which suggests that it might be the extremal construction for these hypergraphs as well. Here, we determine the Turán density of $\mathcal{C}_{\ell}$ for all large $\ell$ not divisible by $3$, showing that indeed $\pi(\mathcal{C}_{\ell}) = 2\sqrt{3} - 3$. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a Turán density being determined where the extremal construction is an iterated blow-up construction. A key component in our proof, which may be of independent interest, is a $3$-uniform analogue of the statement ``a graph is bipartite if and only if it does not contain an odd cycle''.

The Turán Density of 4-Uniform Tight Cycles

Abstract:For any uniformity $r$ and residue $k$ modulo $r$, we give an exact characterization of the $r$-uniform hypergraphs that homomorphically avoid tight cycles of length $k$ modulo $r$, in terms of colorings of $(r-1)$-tuples of vertices. This generalizes the result that a graph avoids all odd closed walks if and only if it is bipartite, as well as a result of Kam\v cev, Letzter, and Pokrovskiy in uniformity 3. In fact, our characterization applies to a much larger class of families than those of the form $\mathscr C_k^{(r)}=\{\text{$r$-uniform tight cycles of length $k$ modulo $r$}\}$. We also outline a general strategy to prove that, if $\mathscr C$ is a family of tight-cycle-like hypergraphs (including but not limited to the families $\mathscr C_k^{(r)}$) for which the above characterization applies, then all sufficiently long $C\in \mathscr C$ will have the same Turán density. We demonstrate an application of this framework, proving that there exists an integer $L_0$ such that for every $L>L_0$ not divisible by 4, the tight cycle $C^{(4)}_L$ has Turán density $1/2$.

Abstract:For a $k$-uniform hypergraph (or simply $k$-graph) $F$, the codegree Turán density $\pi_{\mathrm{co}}(F)$ is the infimum over all $\alpha$ such that any $n$-vertex $k$-graph $H$ with every $(k-1)$-subset of $V(H)$ contained in at least $\alpha n$ edges has a copy of $F$. The uniform Turán density $\pi_{\therefore}(F)$ is the supremum over all $d$ such that there are infinitely many $F$-free $k$-graphs $H$ satisfying that any linear-size subhypergraph of $H$ has edge density at least $d$. Falgas-Ravry, Pikhurko, Vaughan and Volec [J. London Math. Soc., 2023] asked whether for every $3$-graph $F$, $\pi_{\therefore}(F)\leq\pi_{\mathrm{co}}(F)$. We provide a positive answer to this question provided that $\pi_{\mathrm{co}}(F)=0$. Our proof relies on a random geometric construction and a new formulation of the characterization of $3$-graphs with vanishing uniform Turán density due to Reiher, R{ö}dl and Schacht [J. London Math. Soc., 2018]. Along the way, we answer a question of Falgas-Ravry, Pikhurko, Vaughan and Volec about subhypergraphs with linear minimum codegree in uniformly dense hypergraphs in the negative.

Maximal Cliques in Scale-Free Random Graphs

Abstract:We investigate the number of maximal cliques, i.e., cliques that are not contained in any larger clique, in three network models: Erdős-Rényi random graphs, inhomogeneous random graphs (also called Chung-Lu graphs), and geometric inhomogeneous random graphs. For sparse and not-too-dense Erdős-Rényi graphs, we give linear and polynomial upper bounds on the number of maximal cliques. For the dense regime, we give super-polynomial and even exponential lower bounds. Although (geometric) inhomogeneous random graphs are sparse, we give super-polynomial lower bounds for these models. This comes from the fact that these graphs have a power-law degree distribution, which leads to a dense subgraph in which we find many maximal cliques. These lower bounds seem to contradict previous empirical evidence that (geometric) inhomogeneous random graphs have only few maximal cliques. We resolve this contradiction by providing experiments indicating that, even for large networks, the linear lower-order terms dominate, before the super-polynomial asymptotic behavior kicks in only for networks of extreme size.

On local Turán density problems of hypergraphs

Abstract:For integers $q\ge p\ge r\ge2$, we say that an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ has property $(q,p)$, if for any $q$-vertex subset $Q$ of $V(H)$, there exists a $p$-vertex subset $P$ of $Q$ spanning a clique in $H$. Let $T_{r}(n,q,p)=\min\{ e(H): H\subset \binom{[n]}{r}, H \text{~has property~} (q,p)\}$. The local Turán density about property $(q,p)$ in $r$-uniform hypergraphs is defined as $t_{r}(q,p)=\lim_{n\to \infty}T_{r}(n,q,p)/\binom{n}{r}$. Frankl, Huang and Rödl [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A, 177 (2021)] showed that $\lim_{p\to\infty}t_{r}(ap+1,p+1)=\frac{1}{a^{r-1}}$ for positive integer $a$ and $t_{3}(2p+1,p+1)=\frac{1}{4}$ for all $p\ge 3$ and asked the question that determining the value of $\lim_{p\to\infty}t_{r}(\gamma p+1,p+1)$, where $\gamma\ge 1$ is a real number. Based on the study of hypergraph Turán densities, we determine some exact values of local Turán densities and answer their question partially; in particular, our results imply that the equality in their question about exact values does not hold in general.

Abstract:The generalized Turán number ex(n,H,F) is the largest number of copies of H in n -vertex F -free graphs. We denote by tF the vertex-disjoint union of t copies of F . Gerbner, Methuku and Vizer in 2019 determined the order of magnitude of ex(n,Ks,tKr) . We extend this result in three directions. First, we determine ex(n,Ks,tKr) exactly for sufficiently large n . Second, we determine the asymptotics of the analogous number for p -uniform hypergraphs. Third, we determine the order of magnitude of ex(n,H,tKr) for every graph H , and also of the analogous number for p -uniform hypergraphs.

Abstract:We study how many copies of a graph $F$ that another graph $G$ with a given number of cliques is guaranteed to have. For example, one of our main results states that for all $t\ge 2$, if $G$ is an $n$ vertex graph with $kn^{3/2}$ triangles and $k$ is sufficiently large in terms of $t$, then $G$ contains at least \[\Omega(\min\{k^t n^{3/2},k^{\frac{2t^2}{3t-1}}n^{\frac{5t-2}{3t-1}}\})\] copies of $K_{2,t}$, and furthermore, we show these bounds are essentially best-possible provided either $k\ge n^{1/2t}$ or if certain bipartite-analogues of well known conjectures for Turán numbers hold.

Abstract:Turán problems, which concern the minimum density threshold required for the existence of a particular substructure, are among the most fundamental problems in extremal combinatorics. We study Turán problems for hypergraphs with an additional uniformity condition on the edge distribution. This kind of Turán problems was introduced by Erdős and Sós in the 1980s but it took more than 30 years until the first non-trivial exact results were obtained when Glebov, Král' and Volec [Israel J. Math. 211 (2016), 349--366] and Reiher, Rödl and Schacht [J. Eur. Math. Soc. 20 (2018), 1139--1159] determined the uniform Turán density of $K_4^{(3)-}$. Subsequent results exploited the powerful hypergraph regularity method, developed by Gowers and by Nagle, Rödl and Schacht about two decades ago. Central to the study of the uniform Turán density of hypergraphs are palette constructions, which were implicitly introduced by Rödl in the 1980s. We prove that palette constructions always yield tight lower bounds, unconditionally confirming present empirical evidence. This results in new and simpler approaches to determining uniform Turán densities, which completely bypass the use of the hypergraph regularity method.

Hypergraphs with arbitrarily small codegree Turán density

Abstract:Let $k\geq 3$. Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, the minimum codegree $\delta(H)$ is the largest $d\in\mathbb{N}$ such that every $(k-1)$-set of $V(H)$ is contained in at least $d$ edges. Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$, the codegree Turán density $\gamma(F)$ of $F$ is the smallest $\gamma \in [0,1]$ such that every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with $\delta(H)\geq (\gamma + o(1))n$ contains a copy of $F$. Similarly as other variants of the hypergraph Turán problem, determining the codegree Turán density of a hypergraph is in general notoriously difficult and only few results are known. In this work, we show that for every $\varepsilon>0$, there is a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ with $0<\gamma(F)<\varepsilon$. This is in contrast to the classical Turán density, which cannot take any value in the interval $(0,k!/k^k)$ due to a fundamental result by Erdős.

Abstract:Recently Chase determined the maximum possible number of cliques of size $t$ in a graph on $n$ vertices with given maximum degree. Soon afterward, Chakraborti and Chen answered the version of this question in which we ask that the graph have $m$ edges and fixed maximum degree (without imposing any constraint on the number of vertices). In this paper we address these problems on hypergraphs. For $s$-graphs with $s\ge 3$ a number of issues arise that do not appear in the graph case. For instance, for general $s$-graphs we can assign degrees to any $i$-subset of the vertex set with $1\le i\le s-1$. We establish bounds on the number of $t$-cliques in an $s$-graph $\mathcal{H}$ with $i$-degree bounded by $\Delta$ in three contexts: $\mathcal{H}$ has $n$ vertices; $\mathcal{H}$ has $m$ (hyper)edges; and (generalizing the previous case) $\mathcal{H}$ has a fixed number $p$ of $u$-cliques for some $u$ with $s\le u \le t$. When $\Delta$ is of a special form we characterize the extremal $s$-graphs and prove that the bounds are tight. These extremal examples are the shadows of either Steiner systems or partial Steiner systems. On the way to proving our uniqueness results, we extend results of Füredi and Griggs on uniqueness in Kruskal-Katona from the shadow case to the clique case.

Multicolor Turán numbers II -- a generalization of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi theorem and new results on cliques and odd cycles

Abstract:In this paper we continue the study of a natural generalization of Turán's forbidden subgraph problem and the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem. Let $ex_F(n,G)$ denote the maximum number of edge-disjoint copies of a fixed simple graph $F$ that can be placed on an $n$-vertex ground set without forming a subgraph $G$ whose edges are from different $F$-copies. The case when both $F$ and $G$ are triangles essentially gives back the theorem of Ruzsa and Szemerédi. We extend their results to the case when $F$ and $G$ are arbitrary cliques by applying a number theoretic result due to Erdős, Frankl and Rödl. This extension in turn decides the order of magnitude for a large family of graph pairs, which will be subquadratic, but almost quadratic. Since the linear $r$-uniform hypergraph Turán problems to determine $ex_r^{lin}(n,G)$ form a class of the multicolor Turán problem, following the identity $ex_r^{lin}(n,G)=ex_{K_r}(n,G)$, our results determine the linear hypergraph Turán numbers of every graph of girth $3$ and for every $r$ up to a subpolynomial factor. Furthermore, when $G$ is a triangle, we settle the case $F=C_5$ and give bounds for the cases $F=C_{2k+1}$, $k\ge 3$ as well.

Abstract:An r ‐daisy is an r ‐uniform hypergraph consisting of the six r ‐sets formed by taking the union of an (r−2) ‐set with each of the 2‐sets of a disjoint 4‐set. Bollobás, Leader and Malvenuto, and also Bukh, conjectured that the Turán density of the r ‐daisy tends to zero as r→∞ . In this paper we disprove this conjecture. Adapting our construction, we are also able to disprove a folklore conjecture about Turán densities of hypercubes. For fixed d and large n , we show that the smallest set of vertices of the n ‐dimensional hypercube Qn that intersects every copy of Qd has asymptotic density strictly below 1/(d+1) , for all d⩾8 . In fact, we show that this asymptotic density is at most cd , for some constant c<1 . As a consequence, we obtain similar bounds for the edge‐Turán densities of hypercubes. We also answer some related questions of Johnson and Talbot, and disprove a conjecture made by Bukh and by Griggs and Lu on poset densities.

Abstract:Unlike graphs, determining Turán densities of hypergraphs is known to be notoriously hard in general. The essential reason is that for many classical families of $r$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{F}$, there are perhaps many near-extremal $\mathcal{M}_t$-free configurations with very different structure. Such a phenomenon is called not stable, and Liu and Mubayi gave a first not stable example. Another perhaps reason is that little is known about the set consisting of all possible Turán densities which has cardinality of the continuum. Let $t\ge 2$ be an integer. In this paper, we construct a finite family $\mathcal{M}_t$ of 3-uniform hypergraphs such that the Turán density of $\mathcal{M}_t$ is irrational, and there are $t$ near-extremal $\mathcal{M}_t$-free configurations that are far from each other in edit-distance. This is the first not stable example that has an irrational Turán density. It also provides a new phenomenon about feasible region functions.

Abstract:Given any $\varepsilon>0$ we prove that every sufficiently large $n$-vertex $3$-graph $H$ where every pair of vertices is contained in at least $(1/3+\varepsilon)n$ edges contains a copy of $C_{10}$, i.e.\ the tight cycle on $10$ vertices. In fact we obtain the same conclusion for every cycle $C_\ell$ with $\ell\geq 19$.

Abstract:The generalized Turán number $\ex(n,K_s,F)$ denotes the maximum number of copies of $K_s$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. Let $kF$ denote $k$ disjoint copies of $F$. Gerbner, Methuku and Vizer [DM, 2019, 3130-3141] gave a lower bound for $\ex(n,K_3,2C_5)$ and obtained the magnitude of $\ex(n, K_s, kK_r)$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $\ex(n,K_3,2C_5)$ and described the unique extremal graph for large $n$. Moreover, we also determine the exact value of $\ex(n,K_r,(k+1)K_r)$ which generalizes some known results.

On $3$-graphs with vanishing codegree Turán density

Recently, it was proved that for every $3$-graph $F$, $\pi_{\mathrm{co}}(F)=0$ implies $\pi_{\therefore}(F)=0$, where $\pi_{\therefore}(F)$ is the uniform Turán density of $F$ and is defined as the supremum over all $d$ such that there are infinitely many $F$-free $k$-graphs $H$ satisfying that any induced linear-size subhypergraph of $H$ has edge density at least $d$. In this paper, we introduce a layered structure for $3$-graphs which allows us to obtain the reverse implication: every layered $3$-graph $F$ with $\pi_{\therefore}(F)=0$ satisfies $\pi_{\mathrm{co}}(F)=0$. Along the way, we answer in the negative a question of Falgas-Ravry, Pikhurko, Vaughan and Volec [J. London Math. Soc., 2023] about whether $\pi_{\therefore}(F)\leq\pi_{\mathrm{co}}(F)$ always holds. In particular, we construct counterexamples $F$ with positive but arbitrarily small $\pi_{\mathrm{co}}(F)$ while having $\pi_{\therefore}(F)\ge 4/27$.

Abstract:For a family of k-graphs F, the Turán number T(n,F) is the maximum number of edges in a k-graph of order n that does not contain any member of F. The Turán density t(F)=limn→∞T(n,F)/nk. Let K4 be the tetrahedron that is the complete triple graph of order four. Let the triple graph Fp,q defined on the vertex set P∪Q with |P|=p and |Q|=q consist of those edges which intersect P in either one or three vertices. Let V={1,2,3,4,5} and let F5 be defined on V with E(F5)={123,145,245}. Let F5c denote the complement of F5, and let P5 be the weak pentagon obtained from F5 by adding the edge 134 and let C5 be the pentagon obtained from P5 by adding one more edge 235. We prove that•1/2≤t(F1,4)≤2/3,•23−3≤t(K4,F5c)≤2−2,•1/4≤t(F1,4,P5)≤62−8,•2/9≤t(F1,3,F3,2,C5)≤1/11. The first result relates to a conjecture of Mubayi and Markström–Talbot that t(F1,3)=2/7. The best known bounds are 2/7≤t(F1,3)<0.32908. The second result relates to an old conjecture of Turán that t(K4)=5/9. The best bounds are 5/9≤t(K4)≤(3+17)/12. The last two results relate to a result of Mubayi and Rödl that t(F1,3,C5)≤10/31.
Generalized Ramsey--Turán density for cliques

Abstract:We study the generalized Ramsey--Turán function $\mathrm{RT}(n,K_s,K_t,o(n))$, which is the maximum possible number of copies of $K_s$ in an $n$-vertex $K_t$-free graph with independence number $o(n)$. The case when $s=2$ was settled by Erd{ő}s, S{ó}s, Bollob{á}s, Hajnal, and Szemerédi in the 1980s. We combinatorially resolve the general case for all $s\ge 3$, showing that the (asymptotic) extremal graphs for this problem have simple (bounded) structures. In particular, it implies that the extremal structures follow a periodic pattern when $t$ is much larger than $s$. Our results disprove a conjecture of Balogh, Liu, and Sharifzadeh and show that a relaxed version does hold.
