Abstract:In this paper, we describe general characteristics of the MathPartner computer algebra system (CAS) and Mathpar programming language thereof. MathPartner can be used for scientific and engineering calculations, as well as in high schools and universities. It allows one to carry out both simple calculations (acting as a scientific calculator) and complex calculations with large-scale mathematical objects. Mathpar is a procedural language; it supports a large number of elementary and special functions, as well as matrix and polynomial operators. This service allows one to build function images and animate them. MathPartner also makes it possible to solve some symbolic computation problems on supercomputers with distributed memory. We highlight main differences of MathPartner from other CASs and describe the Mathpar language along with the user service provided.

Abstract:In a broad sense, artificial intelligence is a service to find a solution to complex intellectual problems. In this sense, the MathPartner service provides artificial intelligence that allows us to formulate questions and receive answers to questions formulated in a mathematical language. For mathematicians and physicists today, such a language is \LaTeX. The MathPartner service uses a dialect of \LaTeX, which is called Mathpar. The service is a cloud-based computer algebra system and provides users with the opportunity to solve many mathematical problems. In this publication, we focus only on a small class of extremum problems, which are widely applied in economics, management, logistics, and in many engineering fields. In particular, we consider the shortest path problem and discuss an algorithm that is based on the tropical mathematics. The ability to work with many types of classical and tropical algebras, which are freely available to users, is an important distinguishing feature of this intelligent tool for symbolic-numerical calculations. We also consider the use of the simplex algorithm for solving optimization problems.

Abstract:This paper describes technologies to create and maintain a problem solving environment based on a framework for distributed mathematical web services. Our approach allows clients to access mathematical computational facilities through a uniform set of network protocols, independent of the software packages that provide the end functionality. The author of a mathematical web service need know only the specifics of the system in which the mathematical computations are performed, e.g. Maple, Mathematica or Fortran with NAG library. Whatever additional network service code that is necessary (e.g. Java, wsdl, etc), is generated and configured automatically. This paper presents a brief architectural overview of the entire framework, and then gives a detailed description of the design and implementation of the tools for mathematical servers for this environment. A set of mathematical web services currently deployed are described as examples.

Abstract:The quality of mathematics education depends largely on the quality of education in general. The main idea may be summarized as follows: in order to educate the younger generation of people to be able to meet adequately the demands of the time, it is necessary to create conditions for the high-quality mathematics education. Improving the quality of mathematics education of pupils in secondary school is one of the most pressing problems. Contents of the school course of mathematics and its teaching method has always been the subject of undammed and sometimes stormy scientific debates. There are especially true methods of teaching algebra and the analisis in the high secondary school. Still in the study process the algebraic concepts and principles of analysis are given in such an abstract and generalized form that the student may has considerable difficulties to map these general abstract concepts to the certain concrete images, they are generalizations of. Improving education quality indicators can be achieved by using the appropriate computer technology. The article deals with the use of the cloud-oriented systems of computer mathematics (SCM). The prospects of development of the Web-SCM in terms of cloud-based learning environment are considered. The pedagogical features of the SageMath Cloud use as a tool for mathematics learning are revealed. The methodological aspects of algebra and elementary analysis teaching in a high profile school using the cloud-oriented the SCM SageMath Cloud are revealed.

To date, however, most online mathematical publications do not employ the full capabilities of the medium. We describe a project to modernize online mathematics presentation and build a community-focused environment in which the lines between "author" and "reader" are blurred, enhancing collaboration and improving publication quality.

Abstract:In this paper we present the Low-budget LMS Sakai, the analysis conducted and its selection from a list of few popular Low-budget LMSs, as well as its capability in presentation of math texts and formulas. The MATHEIS e-learning system for learning mathematics and informatics and its empowering with few software agent based features including the new developed GUPA (Graphic User Presentation Agent) software agent is emphasized. The plugins offered for Sakai allow powerful mathematics presentation capabilities, one of them being the WIRIS plugin. The paper is focused on the Sakai WIRIS plugin implementation.

Abstract:A mathematical experiment has always been a key source for a mathematical discovery. Over the past 50 years, thanks to digital technologies, its role in mathematical research has grown significantly. Digital technologies have opened up fundamentally new opportunities for experimentation in mathematics education, bringing mathematical education closer to mathematical research for the majority of students. This tendency is especially desirable in the modern world, where it becomes possible thanks to digital technologies. The article discusses the results of the authors' work over the past decades on the application of a computer mathematical experiment at different levels of school and university education. Particular attention is paid to dynamic geometry environments. The possibilities of using computer algebra systems are also discussed. A project concerning schoolchildren's work on generalizations of Napoleon's theorem is considered in detail.

Abstract:A new generation of educational mathematics software is being shaped in ThEdu and other academic communities on the side of computer mathematics. Respective concepts and technologies have been clarified to an extent, which calls for cooperation with educational sciences in order to optimise the new generation's impact on educational practice. The paper addresses educational scientists who want to examine specific software features and estimate respective effects in STEM education at universities and subsequently at high-school. The key features are characterised as a "complete, transparent and interactive model of mathematics", which offers interactive experience in all relevant aspects in doing mathematics. Interaction uses several layers of formal languages: the language of terms, of specifications, of proofs and of program language, which are connected by Lucas-Interpretation providing "next-step-guidance" as well as providing prover power to check user input. So this paper is structured from the point of view of computer mathematics and thus cannot give a serious description of effects on educational practice -- this is up to collaboration with educational science; such collaboration is prepared by a series of questions, some of which are biased towards software usability (and mainly to be solved by computer mathematicians) and some of which are biased towards genuine research in educational sciences.

Abstract:We present two add-ons for Mathematica for teaching mathematics to undergraduate and high school students. These two applications, M@th Desktop (MD) and M@th Desktop Tools (MDTools), include several palettes and notebooks covering almost every field. The underlying didactic concept is so-called "blended learning", in which these tools are meant to be used as a complement to the professor or teacher rather than as a replacement, which other e-learning applications do. They enable students to avoid the usual problem of computer-based learning, namely that too large an amount of time is wasted struggling with computer and program errors instead of actually learning the mathematical concepts. M@th Desktop Tools is palette-based and provides easily accessible and user-friendly templates for the most important functions in the fields of Analysis, Algebra, Linear Algebra and Statistics. M@th Desktop, in contrast, is a modern, interactive teaching and learning software package for mathematics classes. It is comprised of modules for Differentiation, Integration, and Statistics, and each module presents its topic with a combination of interactive notebooks and palettes. Both packages can be obtained from Deltasoft's homepage at http://www.deltasoft.at/ .
The Key Features of the CoCalc Cloud Service Use in the Process of Mathematics and Science Teachers Training

Abstract:The article describes the features of the evolution of the cloud-based systems in the context of mathematics and science teachers training. The notion of the systems of computer mathematics (SCM) is considered as the special kind of learning software. The lists of the special mathematical operations, functions and methods used within the structure of modern SCM are examined. Web-SCM properties are considered as general and specific. The cloud-based SCM are taken as the special stage of Web-SCM development. The criteria for an appropriate cloud service selection to support the process of mathematics disciplines learning are revealed. The key features of the CoCalc cloud service use are considered in concern to the proposed selection criteria: the available computing capacities, the diversity of tools for training and its control, the possibility of increasing the computing capability, the openness of the program code, the availability of tools for joint editing. The results of the experimental testing of CoCalc use in the process of mathematics teachers training are described. Besides, the discussion covering the issues of integration and compatibility with the other tools and services used for mathematics learning (on the example of Octave) is presented. The main trends of the CoCalc cloud service introduction into the training process and the prospects for further research are revealed.

Abstract:We present the possibilities provided by the MathPartner service of calculating definite and indefinite integrals. MathPartner contains software implementation of the Risch algorithm and provides users with the ability to compute antiderivatives for elementary functions. Certain integrals, including improper integrals, can be calculated using numerical algorithms. In this case, every user has the ability to indicate the required accuracy with which he needs to know the numerical value of the integral. We highlight special functions allowing us to calculate complete elliptic integrals. These include functions for calculating the arithmetic-geometric mean and the geometric-harmonic mean, which allow us to calculate the complete elliptic integrals of the first kind. The set also includes the modified arithmetic-geometric mean, proposed by Semjon Adlaj, which allows us to calculate the complete elliptic integrals of the second kind as well as the circumference of an ellipse. The Lagutinski algorithm is of particular interest. For given differentiation in the field of bivariate rational functions, one can decide whether there exists a rational integral. The algorithm is based on calculating the Lagutinski determinant. Mikhail Lagutinski (1871--1915) had worked at Kharkiv (Ukraine). This year we are celebrating his 150th anniversary.

Abstract:The purpose of this work was to design and create an information system for evaluating and testing students' knowledge, which would simplify the process of forming tests and evaluating students' knowledge for teachers. The paper formed an idea about the concept of knowledge testing. The principles of implementation of this process are revealed. An overview of existing software solutions for computer training programs was conducted, the market of existing analogues was analyzed and, based on the analysis, functional and non-functional requirements for the software product being developed were formed. Based on the requirements, technical and software tools were chosen for the development of the program, namely the Java programming language and the Spring framework, the components of which allow to increase the productivity of the software product, as well as to simplify and speed up the setup, configuration and launch of the project. To achieve the goal, the following tasks are solved in the work: processing user data, creating a personal account, information about students and teachers, creating and passing a test, evaluating the quality of students' knowledge and teacher-created tests. A mathematical, information and software model of the system was built. The database was designed and built. The structural and functional scheme of the system has been developed. There are three user roles: teacher, student and unregistered user. Saving test results and the ability to obtain mathematical statistics of test results have been implemented. An important role is played by ensuring the ease and comfort of using the product for the user. Therefore, when developing the program, a lot of attention was paid to creating a friendly and ergonomic interface. The result was an information system of automated testing that fulfills the task, and also meets all the requirements and can be implemented in practice. The results of the work can be used both for the further introduction of the application into the educational process, and for students to acquire practical skills.

Abstract:The aim of this report is to describe a field trial conducted in Italy during the academic year 2009-10, with primary and secondary school teachers (grades K-8), in order to test prototypes of "ready to use" kits to be used to implement PBL laboratory sessions in the classroom. This work is meant to provide a sort of snapshot of the classroom implementation of the teaching recommendations (so that any readers can conduct their own analysis). The kits were designed by matematita (Interuniversity Research Center for the Communication and Informal Learning of Mathematics, http://www.matematita.it). I wish to thank the "Ufficio Scolastico Regionale della Lombardia" for sponsoring the trial.
Notations Around the World: Census and Exploitation

Abstract:Mathematical notations around the world are diverse. Not as much as requiring computing machines' makers to adapt to each culture, but as much as to disorient a person landing on a web-page with a text in mathematics. In order to understand better this diversity, we are building a census of notations: it should allow any content creator or mathematician to grasp which mathematical notation is used in which language and culture. The census is built collaboratively, collected in pages with a given semantic and presenting observations of the widespread notations being used in existing materials by a graphical extract. We contend that our approach should dissipate the fallacies found here and there about the notations in "other cultures" so that a better understanding of the cultures can be realized. The exploitation of the census in the math-bridge project is also presented: this project aims at taking learners "where they are in their math-knowledge" and bring them to a level ready to start engineering studies. The census serves as definitive reference for the transformation elements that generate the rendering of formulæ in web-browsers.

Abstract:The paper collects preparatory work for interdisciplinary collaboration between three partners, between (1) expertise in improving accessibility of studies for impaired individuals, (2) expertise in developing educational mathematics software and (3) expertise in designing and implementing interactive proof assistants. The cooperation was started with the goal to develop an accessible mathematics working environment for education with reasonable efforts. The start was triggered by the lucky discovery that the upcoming Isabelle/VSCode is greatly accessible for blind users without further impairments; this is envisaged as the project's target group. Technical details are described to an extent necessary to understand essential details of efforts required for development. A survey of demand from practice of education with respect to (1) and (2) leads to a vision for educational math software, which necessarily is sketchy but suffices to guide development and which shall invite experts in didactics of mathematics to collaborate.

Abstract:The article highlights the promising ways of providing access to the mathematical software in higher educational institutions. It is emphasized that the cloud computing services implementation is the actual trend of modern ICT pedagogical systems development. The analysis and evaluation of existing ex-perience and educational research of different types of mathematical software packages use are proposed. The methodological guidance on the organization of the cloud-based learning environment in higher educational institutions using the systems of computer mathematics (SCM) is outlined. The advantages and disadvantages of different cloud service models of access to SCM are de-scribed. The cloud-based learning component with the use of Maxima system is described and evaluated.

A mobile web for enhancing statistics and mathematics education

Abstract:A freely available educational application (a mobile website) is presented. This provides access to educational material and drilling on selected topics within mathematics and statistics with an emphasis on tablets and mobile phones. The application adapts to the student's performance, selecting from easy to difficult questions, or older material etc. These adaptations are based on statistical models and analyses of data from testing precursors of the system within several courses, from calculus and introductory statistics through multiple linear regression. The application can be used in both on-line and off-line modes. The behavior of the application is determined by parameters, the effects of which can be estimated statistically. Results presented include analyses of how the internal algorithms relate to passing a course and general incremental improvement in knowledge during a semester.

Abstract:Background: There are many problems with teaching and assessing impaired students in higher education, especially in technical science, where the knowledge is represented mostly by structural information like: math formulae, charts, graphs, etc. Developing e-learning platform for distance education solves this problem only partially due to the lack of accessibility for the blind. Method: The proposed method is based on the decomposition of the typical mathematical exercise into a sequence of elementary sub-exercises. This allows for interactive resolving of math exercises and assessment of the correctness of exercise solutions at every stage. The presented methods were prepared and evaluated by visually impaired people and students. Results: The article presents the accessible interactive tutoring platform for math teaching and assessment, and experience in exploring it. The results of conducted research confirm good understanding of math formulae described according to elaborated rules. Regardless of the level of complexity of the math formulae the level of math formulae understanding is higher for alternative structural description. Conclusions: The proposed solution enables alternative descriptions of math formulae. Based on the research results, the tool for computer-aided interactive learning of mathematics adapted to the needs of the blind has been designed, implemented and deployed as a platform for on-site and online and distance learning. The designed solution can be very helpful in overcoming many barriers that occur while teaching impaired students.

Abstract:This paper deals with the problem of theoretical justification and development of scientific and methodological support for using the cloud service CoCalc as a tool for the formation of mathematics teachers professional competencies. The paper describes the professional training of mathematics teachers in universities of Ukraine, and considers the national and foreign experience of using the cloud-based services in mathematics teachers pre-service training and also the tendencies and prospects of using CoCalc in teaching mathematical disciplines. The process of system design of mathematics teachers professional competencies is characterized, and the model of using the cloud service CoCalc as a tool for forming mathematics teachers professional competencies is developed. The indicators and levels (high, sufficient, medium, low) were identified for each component of the pre-service mathematics teachers professional competence system within the proposed model. The method of using CoCalc as a tool for forming professional competencies of mathematics teachers is developed and its basic components such as purpose, content, tools, methods and results are elaborated. Information regarding the stages of research and also the experimental work objectives and content are presented; the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the main stages (ascertaining, formative) of the pedagogical experiment is performed, confirming the hypothesis of the study.
