Abstract:We propose a testable alternative to inflation directly built in a very general class of ultraviolet complete theories of quantum gravity enjoying Weyl conformal invariance. After the latter is spontaneously broken, logarithmic quantum corrections to the action make both the primordial tensor spectrum (from graviton fluctuations) and the scalar spectrum (from thermal fluctuations) quasi scale invariant. We predict a scalar spectral index $n_{\rm s}$ which only depends on two parameters and is consistent with observations, a tensor index $n_{\rm t} =1-n_{\rm s}>0$, a tensor-to-scalar ratio $r_{0.05}\approx 0.01$ detectable by BICEP Array and LiteBIRD in the immediate or near future, respectively, and a blue-tilted stochastic gravitational-wave background observable by DECIGO in the further future.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to test the quantum gravity theory in the early universe, especially to verify the quantum gravity theory through primordial gravitational waves without adopting the standard inflation mechanism. Specifically, the paper proposes an alternative to the inflation mechanism, which is directly based on a class of quantum gravity theories with Weyl conformal invariance. When this symmetry is spontaneously broken, the logarithmic quantum correction of the action makes the primordial tensor spectrum (from graviton fluctuations) and the scalar spectrum (from thermal fluctuations) quasi - scale - invariant. ### Main objectives of the paper: 1. **Provide an alternative to the inflation mechanism**: The paper proposes a model based on non - local quantum gravity theory. This model can solve the singularity, horizon and flatness problems in the Big Bang model without relying on the standard inflation mechanism, and can also explain the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB). 2. **Predict observable physical quantities**: The paper predicts the scalar spectral index \(n_s\), which depends only on two parameters and is consistent with the observational results. At the same time, it also predicts the tensor spectral index \(n_t = 1 - n_s>0\), and the tensor - scalar ratio \(r_{0.05}\approx0.01\) at \(k = 0.05\). These predictions can be tested by future experiments such as BICEP Array and LiteBIRD. 3. **Explore the high - energy gravitational wave background**: The paper also predicts a blue - shifted stochastic gravitational wave background, which can be observed in the future through experiments such as DECIGO. ### Key concepts and techniques: - **Weyl conformal invariance**: This is a symmetry that makes the theory invariant at the quantum level. When this symmetry is spontaneously broken, a quasi - scale - invariant primordial spectrum can be generated. - **Non - local quantum gravity theory**: This type of theory contains non - local operators, making the quantum properties similar to those of more general non - local theories, with unitarity, non - linear stability, the same tree - level scattering amplitude, the same macroscopic causality properties and super - renormalizability or finiteness at the quantum level. - **Spontaneous symmetry breaking**: By introducing a local Lagrangian term \(L_{\text{loc}}^2\), a Higgs - field potential is provided, which leads to the spontaneous breaking of Weyl symmetry and thus generates a local gravitational theory. ### Main contributions: - **Theoretical innovation**: The paper provides a specific setup to realize quantum conformal invariance and extracts strict predictions about the tensor part from it. - **Experimental verifiability**: The predictions proposed in the paper can be verified or falsified by current and next - generation gravitational - wave observatories, providing the possibility of experimental evidence for the quantum gravity theory. In conclusion, this paper aims to test the quantum gravity theory through primordial gravitational waves, provides a new alternative to the inflation mechanism, predicts a series of observable physical quantities, and provides a clear direction for future experimental verification.
