Abstract:Cake cutting is a widely studied model for allocating resources with temporal or spatial structures among agents. Recently, a new line of research has emerged that focuses on the discrete variant, where the resources are indivisible and connected by a path. In some real-world applications, the resources are interdependent, and dividing the cake may reduce their effectiveness. In this paper, we introduce a model that captures the effect of division as switching utility loss and investigate the tradeoff between fairness and efficiency for various settings. Specifically, we measure fairness and efficiency using the popular notions of envy-freeness up to one item (EF1) and social welfare, respectively. The goal of our study is to understand how much social welfare must be sacrificed to ensure EF1 allocations and design polynomial-time algorithms that can compute EF1 allocations with the best possible social welfare guarantee.

Abstract:We study the problem of fairly allocating $m$ indivisible goods to $n$ agents, where agents may have different preferences over the goods. In the traditional setting, agents' valuations are provided as inputs to the algorithm. In this paper, we study a new comparison-based query model where the algorithm presents two bundles of goods to an agent and the agent responds by telling the algorithm which bundle she prefers. We investigate the query complexity for computing allocations with several fairness notions including proportionality up to one good (PROP1), envy-freeness up to one good (EF1), and maximin share (MMS). Our main result is an algorithm that computes an allocation satisfying both PROP1 and $\frac12$-MMS within $O(\log m)$ queries with a constant number of $n$ agents. For identical and additive valuation, we present an algorithm for computing an EF1 allocation within $O(\log m)$ queries with a constant number of $n$ agents. To complement the positive results, we show that the lower bound of the query complexity for any of the three fairness notions is $\Omega(\log m)$ even with two agents.

Fair Division with Subjective Divisibility

Abstract:The classic fair division problems assume the resources to be allocated are either divisible or indivisible, or contain a mixture of both, but the agents always have a predetermined and uncontroversial agreement on the (in)divisibility of the resources. In this paper, we propose and study a new model for fair division in which agents have their own subjective divisibility over the goods to be allocated. That is, some agents may find a good to be indivisible and get utilities only if they receive the whole good, while others may consider the same good to be divisible and thus can extract utilities according to the fraction of the good they receive. We investigate fairness properties that can be achieved when agents have subjective divisibility. First, we consider the maximin share (MMS) guarantee and show that the worst-case MMS approximation guarantee is at most $2/3$ for $n \geq 2$ agents and this ratio is tight in the two- and three-agent cases. This is in contrast to the classic fair division settings involving two or three agents. We also give an algorithm that produces a $1/2$-MMS allocation for an arbitrary number of agents. Second, we adapt the notion of envy-freeness for mixed goods (EFM) to our model and show that EFM is incompatible with non-wastefulness, a rather weak economic efficiency notion. On the positive side, we prove that an EFM and non-wasteful allocation always exists for two agents if at most one good is discarded.

Abstract:Fair division considers the allocation of scarce resources among agents in such a way that every agent gets a fair share. It is a fundamental problem in society and has received significant attention and rapid developments from the game theory and artificial intelligence communities in recent years. The majority of the fair division literature can be divided along at least two orthogonal directions: goods versus chores, and divisible versus indivisible resources. In this survey, besides describing the state of the art, we outline a number of interesting open questions and future directions in three mixed fair division settings: (i) indivisible goods and chores, (ii) divisible and indivisible goods (mixed goods), and (iii) indivisible goods with subsidy which can be viewed like a divisible good.

In this survey, we delve into the intricacies of fair allocation, focusing specifically on the challenges associated with indivisible resources. We define fairness and efficiency within this context and thoroughly survey existential results, algorithms, and approximations that satisfy various fairness criteria, including envyfreeness, proportionality, MMS, and their relaxations. Additionally, we discuss algorithms that achieve fairness and efficiency, such as Pareto Optimality and Utilitarian Welfare. We also study the computational complexity of these algorithms, the likelihood of finding fair allocations, and the price of fairness for each fairness notion. We also cover mixed instances of indivisible and divisible items and investigate different valuation and allocation settings. Abstract:The fair allocation of mixed goods, consisting of both divisible and indivisible goods, has been a prominent topic of study in economics and computer science. We define an allocation as fair if its utility vector minimizes a symmetric strictly convex function. This fairness criterion includes standard ones such as maximum egalitarian social welfare and maximum Nash social welfare. We address the problem of minimizing a given symmetric strictly convex function when agents have binary valuations. If only divisible goods or only indivisible goods exist, the problem is known to be solvable in polynomial time. In this paper, firstly, we demonstrate that the problem is NP-hard even when all indivisible goods are identical. This NP-hardness is established even for maximizing egalitarian social welfare or Nash social welfare. Secondly, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm for the problem when all divisible goods are identical. To accomplish these, we exploit the proximity structure inherent in the problem. This provides theoretically important insights into the hybrid domain of convex optimization that incorporates both discrete and continuous aspects.

Abstract:We consider the age-old problem of allocating items among different agents in a way that is efficient and fair. Two papers, by Dolev et al. and Ghodsi et al., have recently studied this problem in the context of computer systems. Both papers had similar models for agent preferences, but advocated different notions of fairness. We formalize both fairness notions in economic terms, extending them to apply to a larger family of utilities. Noting that in settings with such utilities efficiency is easily achieved in multiple ways, we study notions of fairness as criteria for choosing between different efficient allocations. Our technical results are algorithms for finding fair allocations corresponding to two fairness notions: Regarding the notion suggested by Ghodsi et al., we present a polynomial-time algorithm that computes an allocation for a general class of fairness notions, in which their notion is included. For the other, suggested by Dolev et al., we show that a competitive market equilibrium achieves the desired notion of fairness, thereby obtaining a polynomial-time algorithm that computes such a fair allocation and solving the main open problem raised by Dolev et al.

Abstract:The theory of algorithmic fair allocation is within the center of multi-agent systems and economics in the last decade due to its industrial and social importance. At a high level, the problem is to assign a set of items that are either goods or chores to a set of agents so that every agent is happy with what she obtains. Particularly, in this survey, we focus on indivisible items, for which absolute fairness such as envy-freeness and proportionality cannot be guaranteed. One main theme in the recent research agenda is about designing algorithms that approximately achieve the fairness criteria. We aim at presenting a comprehensive survey of recent progresses through the prism of algorithms, highlighting the ways to relax fairness notions and common techniques to design algorithms, as well as the most interesting questions for future research.

Abstract:We study the fair division of a continuous resource, such as a land-estate or a time-interval, among pre-specified groups of agents, such as families. Each family is given a piece of the resource and this piece is used simultaneously by all family members, while different members may have different value functions. Three ways to assess the fairness of such a division are examined. (a) Average Fairness means that each family's share is fair according to the "family value function", defined as the arithmetic mean of the value functions of the family members. (b) Unanimous Fairness means that all members in all families feel that their family's share is fair according to their personal value function. (c) Democratic Fairness means that in each family, at least a fixed fraction (e.g. a half) of the members feel that their family's share is fair. We compare these criteria based on the number of connected components in the resulting division and on their compatibility with Pareto-efficiency.

Keeping the Harmony Between Neighbors: Local Fairness in Graph Fair Division

Abstract:We study the problem of allocating indivisible resources under the connectivity constraints of a graph $G$. This model, initially introduced by Bouveret et al. (published in IJCAI, 2017), effectively encompasses a diverse array of scenarios characterized by spatial or temporal limitations, including the division of land plots and the allocation of time plots. In this paper, we introduce a novel fairness concept that integrates local comparisons within the social network formed by a connected allocation of the item graph. Our particular focus is to achieve pairwise-maximin fair share (PMMS) among the "neighbors" within this network. For any underlying graph structure, we show that a connected allocation that maximizes Nash welfare guarantees a $(1/2)$-PMMS fairness. Moreover, for two agents, we establish that a $(3/4)$-PMMS allocation can be efficiently computed. Additionally, we demonstrate that for three agents and the items aligned on a path, a PMMS allocation is always attainable and can be computed in polynomial time. Lastly, when agents have identical additive utilities, we present a pseudo-polynomial-time algorithm for a $(3/4)$-PMMS allocation, irrespective of the underlying graph $G$. Furthermore, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm for obtaining a PMMS allocation when $G$ is a tree.

Abstract:We consider the fair allocation problem of indivisible items. Most previous work focuses on fairness and/or efficiency among agents given agents' preferences. However, besides the agents, the allocator as the resource owner may also be involved in many real-world scenarios, e.g., heritage division. The allocator has the inclination to obtain a fair or efficient allocation based on her own preference over the items and to whom each item is allocated. In this paper, we propose a new model and focus on the following two problems: 1) Is it possible to find an allocation that is fair for both the agents and the allocator? 2) What is the complexity of maximizing the allocator's social welfare while satisfying the agents' fairness? We consider the two fundamental fairness criteria: envy-freeness and proportionality. For the first problem, we study the existence of an allocation that is envy-free up to $c$ goods (EF-$c$) or proportional up to $c$ goods (PROP-$c$) from both the agents' and the allocator's perspectives, in which such an allocation is called doubly EF-$c$ or doubly PROP-$c$ respectively. When the allocator's utility depends exclusively on the items (but not to whom an item is allocated), we prove that a doubly EF-$1$ allocation always exists. For the general setting where the allocator has a preference over the items and to whom each item is allocated, we prove that a doubly EF-$1$ allocation always exists for two agents, a doubly PROP-$2$ allocation always exists for binary valuations, and a doubly PROP-$O(\log n)$ allocation always exists in general. For the second problem, we provide various (in)approximability results in which the gaps between approximation and inapproximation ratios are asymptotically closed under most settings. Most results are based on novel technical tools including the chromatic numbers of the Kneser graphs and linear programming-based analysis.

Abstract:We study the problem of fairly and efficiently allocating indivisible chores among agents with additive disutility functions. We consider the widely-used envy-based fairness properties of EF1 and EFX, in conjunction with the efficiency property of fractional Pareto-optimality (fPO). Existence (and computation) of an allocation that is simultaneously EF1/EFX and fPO are challenging open problems, and we make progress on both of them. We show existence of an allocation that is - EF1+fPO, when there are three agents, - EF1+fPO, when there are at most two disutility functions, - EFX+fPO, for three agents with bivalued disutilities. These results are constructive, based on strongly polynomial-time algorithms. We also investigate non-existence and show that an allocation that is EFX+fPO need not exist, even for two agents.

Abstract:We investigate the price of fairness in multi-agent scheduling problems and focus on the case of two agents, each having a set of jobs, that compete for use of a single machine to execute their jobs. We consider the situation where the two agents aim at minimizing their respective objective functions, namely, total completion time or maximum tardiness (possibly with respect to a common due date) of their jobs. In this scenario, we propose a definition of utility associated to the agents’ objectives, and then we study both max-min and proportionally fair solutions, providing a tight bound on the price of fairness for each notion of fairness. Most of these results are reported in [1].

Abstract:We study temporal fair division, whereby a set of agents are allocated a (possibly different) set of goods on each day for a period of days. We study this setting, as well as a number of its special cases formed by the restrictions to two agents, same goods on each day, identical preferences, or combinations thereof, and chart out the landscape of achieving two types of fairness guarantees simultaneously: fairness on each day (per day) and fairness over time (up to each day, or the weaker version, overall). In the most general setting, we prove that there always exists an allocation that is stochastically-dominant envy-free up to one good (SD-EF1) per day and proportional up to one good (PROP1) overall, and when all the agents have identical preferences, we show that SD-EF1 per day and SD-EF1 overall can be guaranteed. For the case of two agents, we prove that SD-EF1 per day and EF1 up to each day can be guaranteed using an envy balancing technique. We provide counterexamples for other combinations that establish our results as among the best guarantees possible, but also leaving open some tantalizing questions.

Abstract:We consider the fair division of indivisible items using the maximin shares measure. Recent work on the topic has focused on extending results beyond the class of additive valuation functions. In this spirit, we study the case where the items form an hereditary set system. We present a simple algorithm that allocates each agent a bundle of items whose value is at least $0.3636$ times the maximin share of the agent. This improves upon the current best known guarantee of $0.2$ due to Ghodsi et al. The analysis of the algorithm is almost tight; we present an instance where the algorithm provides a guarantee of at most $0.3738$. We also show that the algorithm can be implemented in polynomial time given a valuation oracle for each agent.

Repeated Fair Allocation of Indivisible Items

Abstract:The problem of fairly allocating a set of indivisible items is a well-known challenge in the field of (computational) social choice. In this scenario, there is a fundamental incompatibility between notions of fairness (such as envy-freeness and proportionality) and economic efficiency (such as Pareto-optimality). However, in the real world, items are not always allocated once and for all, but often repeatedly. For example, the items may be recurring chores to distribute in a household. Motivated by this, we initiate the study of the repeated fair division of indivisible goods and chores, and propose a formal model for this scenario. In this paper, we show that, if the number of repetitions is a multiple of the number of agents, there always exists a sequence of allocations that is proportional and Pareto-optimal. On the other hand, irrespective of the number of repetitions, an envy-free and Pareto-optimal sequence of allocations may not exist. For the case of two agents, we show that if the number of repetitions is even, it is always possible to find a sequence of allocations that is overall envy-free and Pareto-optimal. We then prove even stronger fairness guarantees, showing that every allocation in such a sequence satisfies some relaxation of envy-freeness. Finally, in case that the number of repetitions can be chosen freely, we show that envy-free and Pareto-optimal allocations are achievable for any number of agents.

Abstract:Fair division of indivisible resources is a fundamental problem in many disciplines, including computer science, economy, operations research, etc. The existence of PMMS allocations of goods is a major open problem in fair division, even for additive valuations. At the state of the art, there is no identified setting where PMMS allocations are deemed impossible, and the known existing results regarding their existence are limited to highly constrained settings. In this paper, we provide an algorithm for computing a PMMS allocation for identical variant. We also use the algorithm to find the PMMS allocations for 3 agents in line graphs . Moreover, we show that a 45 -PMMS allocation can be computed in polynomial time when agents agree on the ordinal ranking of the goods. A quantitative gauge for assessing the impact on social welfare is known as the price of fairness , which quantifies the maximum possible reduction in social welfare due to the imposition of fairness constraints. Originally explored in the context of divisible goods, the concept of the price of fairness continues to be a pivotal metric for evaluating the effect of fairness considerations on overall social welfare. Consequently, we study the efficiency decrease under PMMS allocations and prove a tight upper bound on the price of PMMS allocations.
