Abstract:This paper proposes an adaptive sparse polynomial chaos expansion(PCE)-based method to quantify the impacts of uncertainties on critical clearing time (CCT) that is an important index in transient stability analysis. The proposed method can not only give fast and accurate estimations for the probabilistic characteristics (e.g., mean, variance, probability density function) of the probabilistic CCT (PCCT), but also provides crucial information about the sensitivity of random inputs with respect to the variance of PCCT. Utilizing the sensitivity information, mitigation measures can be developed for transient stability enhancement. Numerical studies on the WSCC 9-bus system demonstrate the high accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method compared to the Monte Carlo simulation method. The provided sensitivity information and the effectiveness of mitigation measures in transient stability enhancement are also verified.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is that in the power system, with the increase of renewable energy sources (RES) and new load demands, more and more uncertain factors are introduced, and these uncertainties have an impact on the transient stability of the power system. In particular, the Critical Clearing Time (CCT), which is usually an important indicator for transient stability assessment, is no longer a deterministic value but becomes a random variable, namely the Probabilistic Critical Clearing Time (PCCT), when considering various sources of uncertainty. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate transient stability in a probabilistic sense.
To meet these challenges, although the traditional Monte Carlo Simulations (MCS) method can evaluate the probability characteristics of PCCT, it has a high computational cost and may be infeasible for large - scale systems. In addition, existing methods such as sensitivity - based methods, methods based on Transient Energy Function (TEF) and their combinations, although they can improve efficiency, inevitably make assumptions and simplifications when deriving TEF, which may affect the calculation accuracy. Although machine learning techniques can accurately predict CCT, they do not explore the impact of various uncertainty sources on CCT, nor can they provide key sensitivity information for transient stability enhancement.
In response to the above problems, this paper proposes a method based on adaptive sparse Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE) for probabilistic transient stability assessment and enhancement. This method can not only quickly and accurately estimate the probability characteristics of PCCT (such as mean, variance, probability density function, etc.), but also provide sensitivity information about random inputs relative to the variance of PCCT. Using this sensitivity information, mitigation measures for transient stability enhancement can be developed. Numerical studies on the WSCC 9 - node system show that, compared with the Monte Carlo simulation method, the proposed method has higher accuracy and efficiency. At the same time, the effectiveness of the provided sensitivity information and mitigation measures in transient stability enhancement is also verified.
