Abstract:Given a smooth bracket-generating distribution $\mathcal{D}$ of constant growth on a manifold $M$, we prove that maps from an arbitrary manifold $\Sigma$ to $M$, which are transverse to $\mathcal{D}$, satisfy the complete $h$-principle. This partially settles a question posed by M. Gromov.

Abstract:Let M be an n (>= 7)-dimensional complete submanifold with parallel mean curvature in the hyperbolic space Hn+p, whose mean curvature satisfies H-2-1 <= 0. Denote by angstrom and B-R(q) the trace free second fundamental form of M and the geodesic ball of radius R centered at q is an element of M, respectively. We prove that if lim(R ->infinity) sup integral(vertical bar angstrom vertical bar 2dM)(BR(q))/R-2 and if (integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n) dM)(2/n) + 2n(n-2)/3 root n(n-1) H(integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n/2)dM)(2/n) <= C(n), then M is congruent to an n-dimensional hyperbolic space or the Euclidean space R-n. Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional closed hypersurface with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in a unit sphere. Denote by H and S the mean curvature and the squared length of the second fundamental form. We prove that if a(n, H) <= S <= alpha( n, H)+ CnH2, where n >= 4 and H not equal 0, then S = alpha( n, H) and M is a Clifford torus Sn-1(r(1)) x S-1(r(2)). Here alpha(n, H) = n + n(3)/2(n -1) H-2 - n(n - 2)/2(n - 1) root n(2)H(4) + 4(n - 1) H-2, and C-n is a positive constant explicitly depending on n. The emphasis is that our gap theorem imposes no restriction on the range of mean curvature. Moreover, we obtain gap theorems for complete hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in space forms.

Abstract:We prove that curves of constant torsion satisfy the $C^1$-dense h-principle in the space of immersed curves in Euclidean space. In particular, there exists a knot of constant torsion in each isotopy class. Our methods, which involve convex integration and degree theory, quickly establish these results for curves of constant curvature as well.

Bloch's principle for holomorphic maps into subvarieties of semi-abelian varieties

Abstract:We generalize a fundamental theorem in higher dimensional value distribution theory about entire curves in subvarieties $X$ of semi-abelian varieties to the situation of the sequences of holomorphic maps from the unit disc into $X$. This generalization implies, among other things, that subvarieties of log general type in semi-abelian varieties are pseudo-Kobayashi hyperbolic. As another application, we improve a classical theorem due to Cartan in 1920's about the system of nowhere vanishing holomorphic functions on the unit disc satisfying Borel's identity.

A strong parametric h-principle for complete minimal surfaces

Abstract:We prove a parametric h-principle for complete nonflat conformal minimal immersions of an open Riemann surface $M$ into $\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq 3$. It follows that the inclusion of the space of such immersions into the space of all nonflat conformal minimal immersions is a weak homotopy equivalence. When $M$ is of finite topological type, the inclusion is a genuine homotopy equivalence. By a parametric h-principle due to Forstneric and Larusson, the space of complete nonflat conformal minimal immersions therefore has the same homotopy type as the space of continuous maps from $M$ to the punctured null quadric. Analogous results hold for holomorphic null curves $M\to\mathbb C^n$ and for full immersions in place of nonflat ones.

Relative $h$-principles for closed stable forms

Abstract:This paper uses convex integration to develop a new, general method for proving relative $h$-principles for closed, stable, exterior forms on manifolds. This method is applied to prove the relative $h$-principle for 4 classes of closed stable forms which were previously not known to satisfy the $h$-principle, $\textit{viz.}$ stable $(2k-2)$-forms in $2k$ dimensions, stable $(2k-1)$-forms in $2k+1$ dimensions, $\widetilde{\mathrm{G}}_2$ 3-forms and $\widetilde{\mathrm{G}}_2$ 4-forms. The method is also used to produce new, unified proofs of all three previously established $h$-principles for closed, stable forms, $\textit{viz.}$ the $h$-principles for closed stable 2-forms in $2k+1$ dimensions, closed $\mathrm{G}_2$ 4-forms and closed $\mathrm{SL}(3;\mathbb{C})$ 3-forms. In addition, it is shown that if a class of closed stable forms satisfies the relative $h$-principle, then the corresponding Hitchin functional (whenever defined) is necessarily unbounded above. Due to the general nature of the $h$-principles considered in this paper, the application of convex integration requires an analogue of Hodge decomposition on arbitrary $n$-manifolds (possibly non-compact, or with boundary) which cannot, to the author's knowledge, be found elsewhere in the literature. Such a decomposition is proven in Appendix A.

Abstract:Given a class of embeddings into a contact or a symplectic manifold, we give a sufficient condition, that we call isocontact or isosymplectic realization, for this class to satisfy a general h ‐principle. The flexibility follows from the h ‐principles for isocontact and isosymplectic embeddings, it provides a framework for classical results, and we give two new applications. Our main result is that embeddings transverse to a contact structure satisfy a full h ‐principle in two cases: if the complement of the embedding is overtwisted, or when the intersection of the image of the formal derivative with the contact structure is strictly contained in a proper symplectic subbundle. We illustrate the general framework on symplectic manifolds by studying the universality of Hamiltonian dynamics on regular level sets via a class of embeddings.

Formal principle with convergence for rational curves of Goursat type

Abstract:We propose a conjecture that a general member of a bracket-generating family of rational curves in a complex manifold satisfies the formal principle with convergence, namely, any formal equivalence between such curves is convergent. If the normal bundles of the rational curves are positive, the conjecture follows from the results of Commichau-Grauert and Hirschowitz. We prove the conjecture for the opposite case when the normal bundles are furthest from positive vector bundles among bracket-generating families, namely, when the families of rational curves are of Goursat type. The proof uses natural ODEs associated to rational curves of Goursat type and corresponding Cartan connections constructed by Doubrov-Komrakov-Morimoto. As an example, we see that a general line on a smooth cubic fourfold satisfies the formal principle with convergence.

A smooth Birman-Hilden theory for hyperkähler manifolds

Abstract:This article grew out of an effort to understand the smooth mapping class groups of certain 4-manifolds in a geometric manner. We prove a smooth analog of the Birman-Hilden theorem for manifolds that admit a hyperk\"ahler structure. This allows us to probe the smooth mapping class groups associated to certain manifolds with nontrivial fundamental groups. Along the way, and of independent interest, we prove a global Torelli theorem for generalized Enriques manifolds. The techniques used are analogous to Teichm\"uller-theoretic methods in the classical theory of mapping class groups. We apply this hyperk\"ahler Birman-Hilden theorem to obtain results regarding smooth, metric, and complex Nielsen realization on Enriques surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper we will develop a general approach which shows that generalized 'critical relations' of families of locally defined holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally. The main idea is to define a transfer operator, which is a local analogue of the Thurston pullback operator, using holomorphic motions. Assuming a so-called lifting property is satisfied, we obtain information about the spectrum of this transfer operator and thus about transversality. An important new feature of our method is that it is not global: the maps we consider are only required to be defined and holomorphic on a neighbourhood of some finite set. We will illustrate this method by obtaining transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval and circle maps, for example for maps with flat critical points, but also for maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps. As in Tsujii's approach (Tsujii M 1994 A note on Milnor and Thurston's monotonicity theoremGeometry and Analysis in Dynamical Systemvol 14 (Singapore: World Scientific) pp 60-2; Tsujii M 2000 Ergod. Theor. Dyn. Syst.20925-933), for real maps we obtain positive transversality (where > 0 holds instead of just not equal 0), and thus monotonicity of entropy for these families, and also (as an easy application) for the real quadratic family. This method additionally gives results for unimodal families of the form x -> vertical bar x vertical bar(l) vertical bar c for l > 1 not necessarily an even integer and c real.

Abstract:Contact structures, as well as their holomorphic and quaternionic counterparts are the primary examples of strongly bracket generating (or fat) distributions. In this article we associate a numerical invariant to corank $2$ fat distribution on manifolds, referred to as \emph{degree} of the distribution. The real distribution underlying a holomorphic contact structure is of degree $2$. Using Gromov's sheaf theoretic and analytic techniques of $h$-principle, we prove the existence of horizontal immersions of an arbitrary manifold into degree $2$ fat distributions and the quaternionic contact structures. We also study immersions of a contact manifold inducing the given contact structure.

Abstract:We prove that the mapping class group is not an $h$-cobordism invariant of high-dimensional manifolds by exhibiting $h$-cobordant manifolds whose mapping class groups have different cardinalities. In order to do so, we introduce a moduli space of "$h$-block" bundles and understand its difference with the moduli space of ordinary block bundles.

Abstract:Let $E \rightarrow M$ be a smooth vector bundle with a bilinear product on $\Gamma(E)$ satisfying the Jacobi identity. Assuming only the existence of an anchor map $\mathfrak{a}$ we show that $\mathfrak{a}([X,Y]) = [\mathfrak{a}X,\mathfrak{a}Y]_c$. This gives the redundancy of the homomorphism condition in the definition of Leibniz algebroid (in particular if it arises from a Nambu-Poisson manifold); an aspect not addressed in the literature. We apply our result to the brackets of Hagiwara, Ibanez et. al; we settle an old query of Uchino on redundancy for Courant bracket.

Abstract:In this note we prove that the maximum principle of Jäger–Kaul for harmonic maps holds for a more general class of maps, V -harmonic maps. This includes Hermitian harmonic maps (Jost and Yau, Acta Math 170:221–254, 1993 ), Weyl harmonic maps (Kokarev, Proc Lond Math Soc 99:168–194, 2009 ), affine harmonic maps Jost and Simsir (Analysis (Munich) 29:185–197, 2009 ), and Finsler maps from a Finsler manifold into a Riemannian manifold. With this maximum principle we establish the existence of V -harmonic maps into regular balls.

Abstract:We give a geometric proof of the Decomposition Theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein, Deligne and Gabber for the direct image of the intersection cohomology complex under a proper map of complex algebraic varieties. The method rests on new Hodge-theoretic results on the cohomology of projective varieties which extend naturally the classical theory and provide new applications.

Abstract:We strengthen the unpublished theorem of Gabai and Mosher that every depth one sutured manifold contains a very full dynamic branched surface by showing that the branched surface can be chosen to satisfy an additional property we call veering. To this end we prove that every endperiodic map admits a periodic splitting sequence of train tracks carrying its positive Handel-Miller lamination. This completes step one of Gabai-Mosher's unpublished two-step proof that every taut finite depth foliation of a compact, oriented, atoroidal 3-manifold is almost transverse to a pseudo-Anosov flow. Further, a veering branched surface in a sutured manifold is a generalization of a veering triangulation, and we extend some of the theory of veering triangulations to this setting. In particular we show that the branched surfaces we construct are unique up to a natural equivalence relation, and give an algorithmic way to compute the foliation cones of Cantwell-Conlon.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we establish some results around generalized Borel's Theorem. As an application, in the second part, we construct example of smooth surface of degree $d\geq 19$ in $\mathbb{CP}^3$ whose complements is hyperbolically embedded in $\mathbb{CP}^3$. This improves the previous construction of Shirosaki where the degree bound $d=31$ was gave. In the last part, for a Fermat-Waring type hypersurface $D$ in $\mathbb{CP}^n$ defined by the homogeneous polynomial \[ \sum_{i=1}^m h_i^d, \] where $m,n,d$ are positive integers with $m\geq 3n-1$ and $d\geq m^2-m+1$, where $h_i$ are homogeneous generic linear forms on $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$, for a nonconstant holomorphic function $f\colon\mathbb{C}\rightarrow\mathbb{CP}^n$ whose image is not contained in the support of $D$, we establish a Second Main Theorem type estimate: \[ \big(d-m(m-1)\big)\,T_f(r)\leq N_f^{[m-1]}(r,D)+S_f(r). \] This quantifies the hyperbolicity result due to Shiffman-Zaidenberg and Siu-Yeung.

Abstract:We study {\sf traversing} vector flows $v$ on smooth compact manifolds $X$ with boundary. For a given compact manifold $\hat X$, equipped with a traversing vector field $\hat v$ which is {\sf convex} with respect to $\partial\hat X$, we consider submersions/embeddings $\alpha: X \to \hat X$ such that $\dim X = \dim \hat X$ and $\alpha(\partial X)$ avoids a priory chosen tangency patterns $\Theta$ to the $\hat v$-trajectories. In particular, for each $\hat v$-trajectory $\hat\gamma$, we restrict the cardinality of $\hat\gamma \cap \alpha(\partial X)$ by an even number $d$. We call $(\hat X, \hat v)$ a {\sf convex pseudo-envelop/envelop} of the pair $(X, v)$. Here the vector field $v = \alpha^\dagger(\hat v)$ is the $\alpha$-transfer of $\hat v$ to $X$. For a fixed $(\hat X, \hat v)$, we introduce an equivalence relation among convex pseudo-envelops/ envelops $\alpha: (X, v) \to (\hat X, \hat v)$, which we call a {\sf quasitopy}. The notion of quasitopy is a crossover between bordisms of pseudo-envelops and their pseudo-isotopies. In the study of quasitopies $\mathcal{QT}_d(Y, \mathbf c\Theta)$, the spaces $\mathcal P_d^{\mathbf c\Theta}$ of real univariate polynomials of degree $d$ with real divisors whose combinatorial types avoid the closed poset $\Theta$ play the classical role of Grassmanians. We compute, in the homotopy-theoretical terms that involve $(\hat X, \hat v)$ and $\mathcal P_d^{\mathbf c\Theta}$, the quasitopies of convex envelops which avoid the $\Theta$-tangency patterns. We introduce characteristic classes of pseudo-envelops and show that they are invariants of their quasitopy classes. Then we prove that the quasitopies $\mathcal{QT}_d(Y, \mathbf c\Theta)$ often stabilize, as $d \to \infty$.
