Abstract:We show that a plt surface singularity $(P\in X,B)$ is $F$-liftable if and only if it is $F$-pure and is not a rational double point of type $E_8^1$ in characteristic $p=5$. As a consequence, we prove the logarithmic extension theorem for $F$-pure surface pairs and Bogomolov-Sommese vanishing for globally $F$-split surface pairs. These results were previously known to hold in characteristic $p>5$.

Abstract:An orientation-preserving non-contractible separatrix loop of a hyperbolic saddle of a vector field on a two-dimensional surface may be accumulated by a separatrix of the same saddle. We study the unfolding of such loops in generic one-parameter families of vector fields as a semi-local bifurcation. As a byproduct, we construct a countable family of pairwise non-equivalent germs of bifurcation diagrams that appear in locally generic one-parameter families.

Abstract:We show that the Bogomolov-Sommese vanishing theorem holds for a log canonical projective surface in large characteristic unless the Iitaka dimension of the round-down of the log canonical divisor is not equal to two. As an application, we prove that a log resolution of a pair of a normal projective surface and a reduced divisor in large characteristic lifts to the ring of Witt vectors when the Iitaka dimension of the log canonical divisor is less than or equal to zero. Moreover, we give explicit and optimal bounds on the characteristic unless their Iitaka dimensions are equal to zero.

Zero-sum multisets mod p with an application to surface automorphisms

Abstract:We solve a problem in enumerative combinatorics which is equivalent to counting topological types of certain group actions on compact Riemann surfaces. Let $V_2(F_p)$ be the two-dimensional vector space over $F_p$, the field with $p$ elements, $p$ an odd prime. We count orbits of the general linear group $GL_2(F_p)$ on certain multisets consisting of $R \geq 3$ non-zero columns from $V_2(F_p)$. The $R$-multisets are `zero-sum,' that is, the sum (mod $p$) over the columns in the multiset is $[\begin{smallmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \end{smallmatrix}]$. The orbit count yields the number of topological types of fully ramified actions of the elementary abelian $p$-group of rank $2$ on compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+ Rp(p-1)/2-p^2.$

Isotrivial elliptic surfaces in positive characteristic

Abstract:We study relatively minimal surfaces equipped with a strongly isotrivial elliptic fibration in positive characteristic by means of the notion of equivariantly normal curves introduced and developed recently by Brion. Such surfaces are isomorphic to a contracted product $E\times^G X$, where $E$ is an elliptic curve, $G$ is a finite subgroup scheme of $E$ and $X$ is a $G$-normal curve. Using this description, we compute their Betti numbers to determine their birational classes. This allow us to complete the classification of maximal automorphism groups of surfaces in any characteristic. When $G$ is diagonalizable, we compute additional invariants to study the structure of their Picard schemes.

Abstract:A fuzzy version of the ordinary round 2-sphere has been constructed with an invariant curvature. We here consider linear connections on arbitrary fuzzy surfaces of genus zero. We shall find as before that they are more or less rigidly dependent on the differential calculus used but that a large number of the latter can be constructed which are not covariant under the action of the rotation group. For technical reasons we have been forced to limit our considerations to fuzzy surfaces which are small perturbations of the fuzzy sphere.

Abstract:In this paper, it is shown that every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold contains an immersed quasi-Fuchsian closed subsurface of odd Euler characteristic. The construction adopts the good pants method, and the primary new ingredient is an enhanced version of the connection principle, which allows one to connect any two frames with a path of frames in a prescribed relative homology class of the frame bundle. The existence result is applied to show that every uniform lattice of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ admits an exhausting nested sequence of sublattices with exponential homological torsion growth. However, the constructed sublattices are not normal in general.

Abstract:Let $C$ be a nonsingular projective curve over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and $I\subset C$ be a finite set. If $\mathcal{U}_{C,\,\omega}$ denotes the moduli space of semistable parabolic bundles of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on $C$ with parabolic structures determined by $\omega=(k,\{\vec n(x),\vec a(x)\}_{x\in I})$, we prove that $\mathcal{U}_{C,\,\omega}$ is \textit{$F$-split} for generic $C$ and generic choice of $I$ when $p>3r$.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the local lifting problem for the action of elementary abelian groups. Studying logarithmic differential forms linked to deformations of $(\mu_p)^n$-torsors, we show necessary conditions on the set of ramification points in order to get equidistant liftings. Such conditions of combinatoric nature lead us to show new obstructions to lifting actions of Z/3Z x Z/3Z.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove some splitting results for manifolds supporting a non-constant infinity harmonic function which has at most linear growth on one side. Manifolds with non-negative Ricci or sectional curvature are considered. In dimension 2, we extend Savin's theorem on Lipschitz infinity harmonic functions in the plane to every surface with non-negative sectional curvature.

Abstract:We introduce a semi-algebraic structure on the set  of all isotopy classes of non-separating simple closed curves in any compact oriented surface and show that the structure is finitely generated. As a consequence, we produce a natural finite dimensional linear representation of the mapping class group of the surface. Applications to the Teichmüller space, Thurston's measured lamination space, the harmonic Beltrami differentials, and the first cohomology groups of the surface are discussed.

Abstract:In this article, we consider the problem of lifting the GW theory of a symplectic divisor to that of the ambient manifold in the context of symplectic birational geometry. In particular, we generalize Maulik–Pandharipande’s relative/absolute correspondence to relative-divisor/absolute correspondence. Then, we use it to lift a minimal uniruled invariant of a divisor to that of the ambient manifold.

Abstract:Replacing symmetric powers by divided powers and working over Witt vectors instead of ground fields, I generalize Kawamatas T^1-lifting theorem to characteristic p>0. Combined with the work of Deligne-Illusie on degeneration of the Hodge-de Rham spectral sequences, this gives unobstructedness for certain Calabi-Yau varieties with free crystalline cohomology modules.

Abstract:Let $(X,B)$ be a pair of a normal surface over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$ and an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor $B$ on $X$. We prove that Steenbrink-type vanishing holds for $(X,B)$ if it is log canonical and $p>5$, or it is $F$-pure. We also show that rational surface singularities satisfying the vanishing are $F$-injective.

Abstract:We show that there are $f$-vectors of balanced simplicial complexes giving a source of simplicial complexes exhibiting a Boolean decomposition similar to a geometric Lefschetz decomposition. The objects we are working with are $h$-vectors of flag spheres and balanced simplicial complexes whose $f$-vectors are equal to them. This builds on work of Nevo--Petersen--Tenner on a conjecture of Nevo--Petersen that the gamma vector of an odd-dimensional flag sphere is the $f$-vector of a balanced simplicial complex (which was shown for barycentric subdivisions by Nevo--Petersen--Tenner). We can connect our decomposition to positivity questions on reciprocal/palindromic polynomials associated to flag spheres and geometric questions motivating them. In addition, we note that the degrees in the Lefschetz-like decomposition are not halved unlike the usual $h$-vector setting.

Abstract:Let $f\colon S\to B$ a fibred surface with fibres of genus $g\geq 2$ and base curve of genus $b$. Let $u_f$ be its unitary rank. We prove many new slope inequalities involving $u_f$ and some other invariants of the fibration. As applications: (1) we prove a new Xiao-type bound on $u_f$ with respect to $g$ for non-isotrivial fibrations: \[ u_f< g\frac{5g-2}{6g-3}. \] In particular this imples that if $f$ is not locally trivial and $u_f=g-1$ is maximal, then $g\leq 6$; (2) we prove a result in the direction of the Coleman-Oort conjecture: a new constrain on the rank of the (-1,0) part of the maximal unitary Higgs subbundle of a curve generically contained in the Torelli locus; (3) we study in the detail the extremal case (for non-isotrivial $f$) where $u_f=g-1$, giving many constrains for the case $g=6$, $u_f=5$.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth variety over a field of characteristic $p$. It is a natural question whether the Frobenius pushforwards $F_*^e\mathcal O_X$ of the structure sheaf are tilting bundles. We show if $X$ is a smooth del Pezzo surface of degree $\leq 3$ or a Fano threefold with $\mathrm{vol}(K_X)<24$ over a field of characteristic $p$, then $\mathrm{Ext}^i(F_*^e\mathcal O_X,F^e_*\mathcal O_X)\neq 0$ and thus $F_*^e\mathcal O_X$ is not tilting.
