Abstract:We provide general closed-form formulas for the index of type-A Lie poset algebras corresponding to posets of restricted height. Furthermore, we provide a combinatorial recipe for constructing all posets corresponding to type-A Frobenius Lie poset algebras of heights zero, one, and two. A finite Morse theory argument establishes that the simplicial realization of such posets is contractible. It then follows, from a recent theorem of Coll and Gerstenhaber, that the second Lie cohomology group of the corresponding Lie poset algebra with coefficients in itself is zero. Consequently, the Lie poset algebra is absolutely rigid and cannot be deformed. We also provide matrix representations for Lie poset algebras in the other classical types. By so doing, we are able to give examples of deformable Lie algebras which are both solvable and Frobenius. This resolves a question of Gerstenhaber and Giaquinto about the existence of such algebras.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a slightly modified version of Fraïssé theory which is used in a paper by Christopher J. Eagle, Ilijas Farah, Bradd Hart, Boris Kadets, Vladyslav Kalashnyk and Martino Lupini (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1411.4066" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1411.4066">arXiv:1411.4066</a>) and another by the author (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.00124" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.00124">arXiv:1602.00124</a>). Using this version, we also show that every UHF algebra can be recognized as a Fraïssé limit of a class of C*-algebras of matrix-valued continuous functions on cubes with distinguished traces.

Finite index rigidity of hyperbolic groups

Abstract:We prove that the topological complexity of a finite index subgroup of a hyperbolic group is linear in its index. This follows from a more general result relating the size of the quotient of a free cocompact action of hyperbolic group on a graph to the minimal number of cells in a simplicial classifying space for the group. As a corollary we prove that any two isomorphic finite-index subgroups of a non-elementary hyperbolic group have the same index.

Abstract:Using the natural action of $S_\infty$ we show that a countable hereditary class $\mathcal C$ of finitely generated structures has the joint embedding property (JEP) and the weak amalgamation property (WAP) if and only if there is a structure $M$ whose isomorphism type is comeager in the space of all countable, infinitely generated structures with age in $\mathcal C$. In this case, $M$ is the weak Fraïssé limit of $\mathcal C$. This applies in particular to countable structures with generic automorphisms and recovers a result by Kechris and Rosendal [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., 2007].

Abstract:In this paper we continue the study of the nonvanishing minors property (NVM) initiated by Garcia, Karaali and Katz, for the compressed Fourier matrix attached to a subgroup $H$ of the multiplicative group of a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and a character $\chi$ defined over $H$. Here we provide a characterization of this aforementioned property for \textit{symmetries} arising from an index-3 subgroup $H$ and a nontrivial character $\chi$.

Abstract:Analogous to subfactor theory, employing Watatani's notions of index and $C^*$-basic construction of certain inclusions of $C^*$-algebras, (a) we develop a Fourier theory (consisting of Fourier transforms, rotation maps and shift operators) on the relative commutants of any inclusion of simple unital $C^*$-algebras with finite Watatani index, and (b) we introduce the notions of interior and exterior angles between intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras of any inclusion of unital $C^*$-algebras admitting a finite index conditional expectation. Then, on the lines of [2], we apply these concepts to obtain a bound for the cardinality of the lattice of intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras of any irreducible inclusion as in (a), and improve Longo's bound for the cardinality of intermediate subfactors of an inclusion of type $III$ factors with finite index. Moreover, we also show that for a fairly large class of inclusions of finite von Neumann algebras, the lattice of intermediate von Neumann subalgebras is always finite.

Limits of limit sets in rank-one symmetric spaces

Abstract:We consider the question of continuity of limit sets for sequences of geometrically finite subgroups of isometry groups of rank-one symmetric spaces, and prove analogues of classical (Kleinian) theorems in this context. In particular we show that, assuming strong convergence of the sequence of subgroups, the limit sets vary continuously with respect to Hausdorff distance, and if the sequence is weakly type-preserving, the sequence of Cannon-Thurston maps also converges uniformly to a limiting Cannon-Thurston map. Our approach uses the theory of extended geometrically finite representations, developed recently by the second author.

Abstract:We study several explicit finite index subgroups in the known complex hyperbolic lattice triangle groups, and show some of them are neat, some of them have positive first Betti number, some of them have a homomorphisms onto a non-Abelian free group. For some lattice triangle groups, we determine the minimal index of a neat subgroup. Finally, we answer a question raised by Stover and describe an infinite tower of neat ball quotients all with a single cusp.

Abstract:We give an upper bound for the index of certain Lie algebras, called of seaweed type, introduced by V. Dergachev, A. Kirillov and D. Panyushev. We deduce from this a conjecture of D. Panyushev stated in "Inductive formulas for the index of seaweed Lie algebra, Moscow Math. Journal (2001) 221-241". We conjecture that our upper bound gives in fact a formula for the index of such Lie algebras, and we prove it in certain cases. Finally, we obtain a result concerning the index of parabolic subalgebras of a semisimple Lie algebra.

Abstract:We study Frattini subgroups of various generalizations of hyperbolic groups. For any countable group $G$ admitting a general type action on a hyperbolic space $S$, we show that the induced action of the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(G)$ on $S$ has bounded orbits. This implies that $\Phi(G)$ is "small" compared to $G$; in particular, $|G:\Phi(G)|=\infty$. In contrast, for any finitely generated non-cyclic group $Q$ with $\Phi(Q)=\{ 1\}$, we construct an infinite lacunary hyperbolic group $L$ such that $L/\Phi(L)\cong Q$; in particular, the Frattini subgroup of an infinite lacunary hyperbolic group can have finite index. As an application, we obtain the first examples of invariably generated, infinite, lacunary hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a Dedekind domain whose field of fractions $K$ is a global field. Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional separable $K$-algebra and let $\Lambda$ be an $\mathcal{O}$-order in $A$. Let $n$ be a positive integer and suppose that $X$ is a $\Lambda$-lattice such that $K \otimes_{\mathcal{O}} X$ is free of rank $n$ over $A$. Then $X$ contains a (non-unique) free $\Lambda$-sublattice of rank $n$. The main result of the present article is to show there exists such a sublattice $Y$ such that the generalised module index $[X : Y]_{\mathcal{O}}$ has explicit upper bounds with respect to division that are independent of $X$ and can be chosen to satisfy certain conditions. We give examples of applications to the approximation of normal integral bases and strong Minkowski units, and to the Galois module structure of rational points over abelian varieties.

Abstract:For a given ǫ > 0, we show that there exist two finite index subgroups of PSL2(Z) which are (1 + ǫ)-quasisymmetrically conjugated and the conjugation homeomorphism is not conformal. This implies that for any ǫ > 0 there are two finite regular covers of the Modular once punctured torus T0 (or just the Modular torus) and a (1 + ǫ)-quasiconformal between them that is not homotopic to a conformal map. As an application of the above results, we show that the orbit of the basepoint in the Teichmüller space T (Sp) of the punctured solenoid Sp under the action of the corresponding Modular group (which is the mapping class group of Sp [5], [6]) has the closure in T (Sp) strictly larger than the orbit and that the closure is necessarily uncountable.

Abstract:We use the controlled algebra approach to study the problem that whether the Farrell-Jones conjecture is closed under passage to over-groups of finite indices. Our study shows that this problem is closely related to a general problem in algebraic $K$- and $L$-theories. We use induction theory to study this general problem. This requires an extension of the classical induction theorem for $K$- and $L$- theories of finite groups with coefficients in rings to with twisted coefficients in additive categories. This extension is well-known to experts, but a detailed proof does not exist in the literature. We carry out a detailed proof. This extended induction theorem enables us to make some reductions for the general problem, and therefore for the finite index problem of the Farrell-Jones conjecture.

Abstract:We bound the number of fixed points of an automorphism of a real curve in terms of the genus and the number of connected components of the real part of the curve. Using this bound, we derive some consequences concerning the maximum order of an automorphism and the maximum order of an abelian group of automorphisms of a real curve. We also bound the full group of automorphisms of a real hyperelliptic curve.

Abstract:A countable, bounded degree graph is almost finite if it has a tiling with isomorphic copies of finitely many Følner sets, and we call it strongly almost finite, if the tiling can be randomized so that the probability that a vertex is on the boundary of a tile is uniformly small. We give various equivalents for strong almost finiteness. In particular, we prove that Property A together with the Følner property is equivalent to strong almost finiteness. Using these characterizations, we show that graphs of subexponential growth and Schreier graphs of amenable groups are always strongly almost finite, generalizing the celebrated result of Downarowicz, Huczek and Zhang about amenable Cayley graphs, based on graph theoretic rather than group theoretic principles. We give various equivalents to Property A for graphs, and show that if a sequence of graphs of Property A (in a uniform sense) converges to a graph $G$ in the neighborhood distance (a purely combinatorial analogue of the classical Benjamini-Schramm distance), then their Laplacian spectra converge to the Laplacian spectrum of $G$ in the Hausdorff distance. We apply the previous theory to construct a new and rich class of classifiable $C^{\star}$-algebras. Namely, we show that for any minimal strong almost finite graph $G$ there are naturally associated simple, nuclear, stably finite $C^{\star}$-algebras that are classifiable by their Elliott invariants.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, real semisimple Lie group. Let $K<G$ be maximal compact, and let $\Gamma < G$ be discrete and such that $\Gamma \backslash G$ has finite volume. If the real rank of $G$ is $1$ and $\Gamma$ is torsion-free, then Barbasch and Moscovici obtained an index theorem for Dirac operators on the locally symmetric space $\Gamma \backslash G/K$. We obtain a higher version of this, by constructing an index of Dirac operators on $G/K$ in the $K$-theory of an algebra on which the conjugation-invariant terms in Barbasch and Moscovici's index theorem define continuous traces. The resulting index theorems also apply when $\Gamma$ has torsion. The cases of these index theorems for traces defined by semisimple orbital integrals extend to Song and Tang's higher orbital integrals, and yield nonzero and computable results even when $\operatorname{rank}(G)> \operatorname{rank}(K)$, or the real rank of $G$ is larger than $1$.
