Abstract:If G is a finite group, we have proposed new conjectures on the interaction between different primes and their corresponding Brauer principal blocks. In this paper, we give strong support to the validity of these conjectures.

Abstract:Problem 21 of Brauer's list of problems from 1963 asks whether for any positive integer k there are finitely many isomorphism classes of groups that occur as the defect group of a block with k irreducible characters. We solve this problem for principal blocks. Another long-standing open problem (from 1982) in this area asks whether the defect group of a block with 3 irreducible characters is necessarily the cyclic group of order 3. In most cases we reduce this problem to a question on simple groups that is closely related to the recent solution of Brauer's height zero conjecture.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:Let p,q be different primes and suppose that the principal p- and the principal q-block of a finite group have only one irreducible complex character in common, namely the trivial one. We conjecture that this condition implies the existence of a nilpotent Hall {p,q}-subgroup and prove that a minimal counter-example must be an almost simple group where pq divides the order of its simple nonabelian normal subgroup. As an immediate consequence we obtain that the conjecture holds true for p-solvable or q-solvable groups. Furthermore, we prove the conjecture in case 2∈{p,q} using the classification theorem of finite simple groups. Finally, we consider the situation that the intersection of an arbitrary p-block with an arbitrary q-block contains only one irreducible character.

Abstract:Recently, Malle and Navarro obtained a Galois strengthening of Brauer's height zero conjecture for principal $p$-blocks when $p=2$, considering a particular Galois automorphism of order~$2$. In this paper, for any prime $p$ we consider a certain elementary abelian $p$-subgroup of the absolute Galois group and propose a Galois version of Brauer's height zero conjecture for principal $p$-blocks. We prove it when $p=2$ and also for arbitrary $p$ when $G$ does not involve certain groups of Lie type of small rank as composition factors. Furthermore, we prove it for almost simple groups and for $p$-solvable groups.

Abstract:Let p be a prime. In this paper we provide a lower bound for the number of almost p-rational characters of degree coprime to p in the principal p-block of a finite group of order divisible by p. We further describe the p-local structure of the groups for which the above-mentioned bound is sharp.

Abstract:We classify principal $2$-blocks of finite groups $G$ with Sylow $2$-subgroups isomorphic to a wreathed $2$-group $C_{2^n}\wr C_2$ with $n\geq 2$ up to Morita equivalence and up to splendid Morita equivalence. As a consequence, we obtain that Puig's Finiteness Conjecture holds for such blocks. Furthermore, we obtain a classification of such groups modulo $O_{2'}(G)$, which is a pure group theoretical result and of independent interest. Methods previously applied to blocks of tame representation type are used. They are, however, further developed in order to deal with blocks of wild representation type.

Abstract:We pose 100 new conjectures on representations involving primes or related things, which might interest number theorists and stimulate further research. Below are five typical examples: (i) For any positive integer n, there exists $k\in \{0,\ldots ,n\}$ such that $n+k$ and $n+k^2$ are both prime. (ii) Each integer $n>1$ can be written as $x+y$ with $x,y\in \{1,2,3,\ldots \}$ such that $x+ny$ and $x^2+ny^2$ are both prime. (iii) For any rational number $r>0$, there are distinct primes $q_1,\ldots ,q_k$ with $r=\sum _{j=1}^k1/(q_j-1)$. (iv) Every $n=4,5,\ldots $ can be written as $p+q$, where p is a prime with $p-1$ and $p+1$ both practical, and q is either prime or practical. (v) Any positive rational number can be written as m/n, where m and n are positive integers with $p_m+p_n$ a square (or $\pi (m)\pi (n)$ a positive square), $p_k$ is the kth prime and $\pi (x)$ is the prime-counting function.

Abstract:For $$n\in \mathbb {N}$$ , we denote by $$\pi (n)$$ the set of prime divisors of n. For a block B of a finite group G, let $${{\,\mathrm{Irr}\,}}(B)$$ be the set of irreducible complex characters of G belonging to B. Let $$\rho (B)$$ be the set of those primes dividing the degree of some character in $${{\,\mathrm{Irr}\,}}(B)$$ , and let $$\sigma (B)$$ be the maximal number of primes dividing such a degree. For a solvable group G, we prove that $$|\rho (B)|\le 3\sigma (B)+1$$ . This provides a block result in the spirit of Huppert’s $$\rho $$ - $$\sigma $$ conjecture.

Abstract:We investigate the separation of characters by blocks at different primes and the inclusions of q-blocks in p-blocks (viewed as sets of characters), and use these notions to prove results on the structure of the corresponding groups. In particular, we provide a new criterion for the nilpotence of a finite group G based on the separation by principal blocks, and we show that a condition on block unions has strong structural consequences.

Abstract: We pose many conjectures involving primes and quadratic forms, which might interest number theorists and stimulate further research. Below are five typical examples: (i) For any positive integer, there is an integer k=0,...,n such that n+k and n+k^2 are both prime. (ii) Any integer n>11 can be written as p+q with p, p+6, 6q-1 and 6q+1 all prime. (iii) For each n=6,7,... there is a prime p<n such that 6n-p and 6n+p are both prime. (iv) Any integer n>3 can be written as p+q, where p is a prime with p-1 and p+1 both practical, and q is either prime or practical. Also, every even number n>8 can be written as p+q+r, where p is a prime with p-1 and p+1 both practical, q is a prime with q-1 and q+1 both practical, and r is a practical number with r-1 and r+1 both prime. (v) Any positive rational number can be written as $m/n$, where $m$ and $n$ are positive integers with $p_m+p_n$ a square (or with $\pi(m)\pi(n)$ a positive square, or with $\varphi(m)$ and $\sigma(n)$ both squares).

Abstract:In this note, it is shown that a finite group G is solvable if for each odd prime divisor p of |G|, |Irr(B0(G)2)∩Irr(B0(G)p)|≤2, where Irr(B0(G)p) is the set of complex irreducible characters of the principal p-block B0(G)p of G. Also, the structure of such groups is investigated. Examples show that the bound 2 is best possible.

Abstract:Since the mathematicians of ancient Greece until Fermat, since Gauss until today; the way how the primes along the numerical straight line are distributed has become perhaps the most difficult math problem; many people believe that their distribution is chaotic, governed only by the laws of chance. In this article the author tries to resolve satisfactorily all matter related to the distance between primes, based on the determination of a lower bound for the primes counting function, the estimate of Legendre's conjecture, and the iterative method for solving equations.

Abstract:We investigate the separation of irreducible characters by blocks at different primes and the covering of irreducible characters by blocks (viewed as sets of characters); these notions are used to prove results on the group structure. The covering of all characters of a group by principal blocks is only possible when already one principal block suffices or the generalized Fitting subgroup has a very special structure.

On the set of bad primes in the study of Casas-Alvero Conjecture

Abstract:The Casas-Alvero conjecture predicts that every univariate polynomial over a field of characteristic zero having a common factor with each of its derivatives $H_i(f)$ is a power of a linear polynomial. One approach to proving the conjecture is to first prove it for polynomials of some small degree $d$, compile a list of bad primes for that degree (namely, those primes $p$ for which the conjecture fails in degree $d$ and characteristic $p$) and then deduce the conjecture for all degrees of the form $dp^\ell$, $\ell\in\mathbb{N}$, where $p$ is a good prime for $d$. In this paper we calculate certain distinguished monomials appearing in the resultant $R(f,H_i(f))$ and obtain a (non-exhaustive) list of bad primes for every degree $d\in\mathbb{N}\setminus\{0\}$.

Abstract:Slattery has generalized Brauer's theory of p-blocks of finite groups to pi-blocks of pi-separable groups where pi is a set of primes. In this setting we show that the order of a defect group of a pi-block B is bounded in terms of the number of irreducible characters in B. This is a variant of Brauer's Problem 21 and generalizes Külshammer's corresponding theorem for p-blocks of p-solvable groups. At the same time, our result generalizes Landau's classical theorem on the number of conjugacy classes of an arbitrary finite group. The proof relies on the classification of finite simple groups.
