Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, linear real reductive group. We give sufficient conditions ensuring the well-definedness of the delocalized eta invariant $\eta_g (D_X)$ associated to a Dirac operator $D_X$ on a cocompact $G$-proper manifold $X$ and to the orbital integral $\tau_g$ defined by a semisimple element $g\in G$. Along the way, we give a detailed account of the large time behaviour of the heat kernel and of its short time bahaviour near the fixed point set of $g$. We prove that such a delocalized eta invariant enters as the boundary correction term in an index theorem computing the pairing between the index class and the 0-degree cyclic cocycle defined by $\tau_g$ on a $G$-proper manifold with boundary. More importantly, we also prove a higher version of such a theorem, for the pairing of the index class and the higher cyclic cocycles defined by the higher orbital integral $\Phi^P_g$ associated to a cuspidal parabolic subgroup $P<G$ with Langlands decomposition $P=MAN$ and a semisimple element $g\in M$. We employ these results in order to define (higher) rho numbers associated to $G$-invariant positive scalar curvature metrics.

Abstract:For a subgroup $H$ of a reductive group $G$, let $\mathfrak m\subset \mathfrak g^*$ be the cotangent space of $eH\in G/H$. The linear action $(H:\mathfrak m)$ is the coisotropy representation. It is known that the complexity and rank of $G/H$ (denoted $c$ and $r$, respectively) are encoded in properties of $(H:\mathfrak m)$. We complement existing results on $c$, $r$, and $(H:\mathfrak m)$, especially for quasiaffine varieties $G/H$. If the algebra of invariants $k[\mathfrak m]^H$ is finitely generated, then we establish a connection between the nullcones in $\mathfrak m$ and $\mathfrak g^*$. Two other topics considered are (i) a relationship between varieties $G/H$ of complexity at most 1 and the homological dimension of the algebra of invariants $k[\mathfrak m]^H$ and (ii) the Poisson structure of $k[\mathfrak m]^H$ and Poisson-commutative subalgebras in $k[\mathfrak m]^H$ with maximal transcendence degree.

Abstract:Let G be a real reductive group, and let chi be a character of a reductive subgroup H of G. We construct chi-invariant linear functionals on certain cohomologically induced representations of G, and we show that these linear functionals do not vanish on the bottom layers. Applying this construction, we prove two Archimedean nonvanishing hypotheses which are vital to the arithmetic study of special values of certain L-functions via modular symbols.

Abstract:We first introduce an invariant index for G-equivariant elliptic differential operators on a locally compact manifold M admitting a proper cocompact action of a locally compact group G. It generalizes the Kawasaki index for orbifolds to the case of proper cocompact actions. Our invariant index is used to show that an analog of the Guillemin–Sternberg geometric quantization conjecture holds if M is symplectic with a Hamiltonian action of G that is proper and cocompact. This essentially solves a conjecture of Hochs and Landsman.
A higher index on finite-volume locally symmetric spaces

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, real semisimple Lie group. Let $K<G$ be maximal compact, and let $\Gamma < G$ be discrete and such that $\Gamma \backslash G$ has finite volume. If the real rank of $G$ is $1$ and $\Gamma$ is torsion-free, then Barbasch and Moscovici obtained an index theorem for Dirac operators on the locally symmetric space $\Gamma \backslash G/K$. We obtain a higher version of this, by constructing an index of Dirac operators on $G/K$ in the $K$-theory of an algebra on which the conjugation-invariant terms in Barbasch and Moscovici's index theorem define continuous traces. The resulting index theorems also apply when $\Gamma$ has torsion. The cases of these index theorems for traces defined by semisimple orbital integrals extend to Song and Tang's higher orbital integrals, and yield nonzero and computable results even when $\operatorname{rank}(G)> \operatorname{rank}(K)$, or the real rank of $G$ is larger than $1$.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a discrete finitely generated group. Let $\hat{M}\to T$ be a $\Gamma$-equivariant fibration, with fibers diffeomorphic to a fixed even dimensional manifold with boundary $Z$. We assume that $\Gamma\to \hat{M}\to \hat{M}/\Gamma$ is a Galois covering of a compact manifold with boundary. Let $(D^+ (\theta))_{\theta\in T}$ be a $\Gamma$-equivariant family of Dirac-type operators. Under the assumption that the boundary family is $L^2$-invertible, we define an index class in the K-theory of the cross-product algebra, $K_0 (C^0 (T)\rtimes_r \Gamma)$. If, in addition, $\Gamma$ is of polynomial growth, we define higher indeces by pairing the index class with suitable cyclic cocycles. Our main result is then a formula for these higher indeces: the structure of the formula is as in the seminal work of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer, with an interior geometric contribution and a boundary contribution in the form of a higher eta invariant associated to the boundary family. Under similar assumptions we extend our theorem to any $G$-proper manifold, with $G$ an étale groupoid. We employ this generalization in order to establish a higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index formula on certain foliations with boundary. Fundamental to our work is a suitable generalization of Melrose $b$-pseudodifferential calculus as well as the superconnection proof of the index theorem on $G$-proper manifolds recently given by Gorokhovsky and Lott.

Abstract:The first main result of this paper is to prove that the convergence of Lott's delocalized eta invariant holds for all differential operators with a sufficiently large spectral gap at zero. Furthermore, to each delocalized cyclic cocycle, we define a higher analogue of Lott's delocalized eta invariant and prove its convergence when the delocalized cyclic cocycle has at most exponential growth. Our second main result is to obtain an explicit formula of the delocalized Connes-Chern character of all $C^\ast$-algebraic secondary invariants for word hyperbolic groups. Equivalently, we give an explicit formula for the pairing between $C^\ast$-algebraic secondary invariants and delocalized cyclic cocycles of the group algebra. When the $C^\ast$-algebraic secondary invariant is a $K$-theoretic higher rho invariant of an invertible differential operator, we show this pairing is precisely the higher analogue of Lott's delocalized eta invariant alluded to above. Our work uses Puschnigg's smooth dense subalgebra for word hyperbolic groups in an essential way. We emphasize that our construction of the delocalized Connes-Chern character is at $C^\ast$-algebra $K$-theory level. This is of essential importance for applications to geometry and topology. As a consequence, we compute the paring between delocalized cyclic cocycles and $C^\ast$-algebraic Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index classes for manifolds with boundary, when the fundamental group of the given manifold is hyperbolic.
Invariants and relative invariants under compact Lie groups

Abstract:This paper presents algebraic methods for the study of polynomial relative invariants, when the group G formed by the symmetries and relative symmetries is a compact Lie group. We deal with the case when the subgroup H of symmetries is normal in G with index m, m greater or equal to 2. For this, we develop the invariant theory of compact Lie groups acting on complex vector spaces. This is the starting point for the study of relative invariants and the computation of their generators. We first obtain the space of the invariants under the subgroup $H$ of $\Gamma$ as a direct sum of $m$ submodules over the ring of invariants under the whole group. Then, based on this decomposition, we construct a Hilbert basis of the ring of G-invariants from a Hilbert basis of the ring of H-invariants. In both results the knowledge of the relative Reynolds operators defined on H-invariants is shown to be an essential tool to obtain the invariants under the whole group. The theory is illustrated with some examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce several new secondary invariants for Dirac operators on a complete Riemannian manifold with a uniform positive scalar curvature metric outside a compact set and use these secondary invariants to establish a higher index theorem for the Dirac operators. We apply our theory to study the secondary invariants for a manifold with corner with positive scalar curvature metric on each boundary face.
Nilpotent Invariants for Generic Discrete Series of Real Groups

Abstract:Let $G(\mathbb{R})$ be a real reductive group. Suppose $\pi$ is an irreducible representation of $G(\mathbb{R})$ having a Whittaker model, and consider three invariants of $\pi$ related to nilpotents elements of the Lie algebra of $G$ (or its dual): the associated variety, the wave-front set, and the set of Whittaker data for which $\pi$ has a Whittaker model. If $\pi$ is a discrete series representation, these invariants are known to determine each other. We provide a self-contained account of this and related results, including an elementary proof that passage from $\pi$ to the three invariants defines natural bijections between the generic discrete series in an $L$-packet, the possible Whittaker data for $G(\mathbb{R})$, and the appropriate sets of nilpotent orbits. Given one of the three invariants, we also explain how to reconstruct the other two. Many of the results were known: we give simplified proofs for several of them, for instance a simple proof (for generic discrete series) that the associated variety and the wave-front set are related by the Kostant-Sekiguchi correspondence.

Refined invariants of finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras

Abstract:We define and study refined Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of contractible curves in complex algebraic 3-folds, alongside the cohomological Donaldson--Thomas theory of finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras. These Gopakumar-Vafa invariants can be constructed one of two ways: as cohomological BPS invariants of contraction algebras controlling the deformation theory of these curves, as defined by Donovan and Wemyss, or by feeding the moduli spaces that Katz used to define genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants into the machinery developed by Joyce et al. The conjecture that the two definitions give isomorphic results is a special case of a kind of categorified version of the strong rationality conjecture due to Pandharipande and Thomas, that we discuss and propose a means of proving. We prove the positivity of the cohomological/refined BPS invariants of all finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras. This result supports this strengthening of the strong rationality conjecture, as well as the conjecture of Brown and Wemyss stating that all finite-dimensional Jacobi algebras for appropriate symmetric quivers are isomorphic to contraction algebras.

Stability of nearly Kähler and nearly parallel $G_2$-manifolds

Abstract:We investigate generalisations of Hitchin's functionals, whose critical points correspond to nearly Kähler and nearly parallel $G_2$-structures. Our focus is on the gradient flow of these functionals and the spectral decomposition of their Hessians with respect to natural indefinite inner products. We introduce a Morse-like index for these functionals, termed the Hitchin index. We prove this index provides a lower bound for the Einstein co-index and explore its relationship with the deformation theory of $G_2$- and $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$-conifolds.

Abstract:What are called secondary characteristic classes in Chern-Weil theory are a refinement of ordinary characteristic classes of principal bundles from cohomology to differential cohomology. We consider the problem of refining the construction of secondary characteristic classes from cohomology sets to cocycle spaces; and from Lie groups to higher connected covers of Lie groups by smooth infinity-groups, i.e., by smooth groupal A-infinity-spaces. Namely, we realize differential characteristic classes as morphisms from infinity-groupoids of smooth principal infinity-bundles with connections to infinity-groupoids of higher U(1)-gerbes with connections. This allows us to study the homotopy fibers of the differential characteristic maps thus obtained and to show how these describe differential obstruction problems. This applies in particular to the higher twisted differential spin structures called twisted differential string structures and twisted differential fivebrane structures.

Abstract:In the first part of this series, we defined an equivariant index without assuming the group acting or the orbit space of the action to be compact. This allowed us to generalise an index of deformed Dirac operators, defined for compact groups by Braverman. In this paper, we investigate properties and applications of this index. We prove that it has an induction property that can be used to deduce various other properties of the index. In the case of compact orbit spaces, we show how it is related to the analytic assembly map from the Baum-Connes conjecture, and an index used by Mathai and Zhang. We use the index to define a notion of K-homological Dirac induction, and show that, under conditions, it satisfies the quantisation commutes with reduction principle.

Discrete Torsion in Singular G_2-Manifolds and Real LG

Abstract:We investigate strings at singularities of G_2-holonomy manifolds which arise in Z_2 orbifolds of Calabi-Yau spaces times a circle. The singularities locally look like R^4/Z_2 fibered over a SLAG, and can globally be embedded in CICYs in weighted projective spaces. The local model depends on the choice of a discrete torsion in the fibration, and the global model on an anti-holomorphic involution of the Calabi-Yau hypersurface. We determine how these choices are related to each other by computing a Wilson surface detecting discrete torsion. We then follow the same orbifolds to the non-geometric Landau-Ginzburg region of moduli space. We argue that the symmetry-breaking twisted sectors are effectively captured by real Landau-Ginzburg potentials. In particular, we find agreement in the low-energy spectra of strings computed from geometry and Gepner-model CFT. Along the way, we construct the full modular data of orbifolds of N=2 minimal models by the mirror automorphism, and give a real-LG interpretation of their modular invariants. Some of the models provide examples of the mirror-symmetry phenomenon for G_2 holonomy.

Abstract:Let G be a connected real reductive group. Orbit integrals define traces on the group algebra of G. We introduce a construction of higher orbit integrals in the direction of higher cyclic cocycles on the Harish-Chandra Schwartz algebra of G. We analyze these higher orbit integrals via Fourier transform by expressing them as integrals on the tempered dual of G. We obtain explicit formulas for the pairing between the higher orbit integrals and the K-theory of the reduced group C*-algebra, and discuss their applications to representation theory and K-theory.

Abstract:Suppose V is a finite dimensional, complex vector space, A is a finite set of codimension one subspaces of V, and G is a finite subgroup of the general linear group GL(V) that permutes the hyperplanes in A. In this paper we study invariants and semi-invariants in the graded QG-module H^*(M(A)), where M(A) denotes the complement in V of the hyperplanes in A and H^*( . ) denotes rational singular cohomology, in the case when A is a reflection arrangement and the pair (A,G) arises from a reflection coset. Our main result is the construction of an explicit, natural (from the point of view of Coxeter groups) basis of the space of invariants, H^*(M(A))^G. In addition to leading to a proof of the description of the space of invariants conjectured by Felder and Veselov for Coxeter groups that does not rely on computer calculations, this construction provides an extension of this description of the space of invariants to arbitrary finite, complex reflection groups. The main result also leads to simplifications of some cohomology computations of Lehrer, Callegaro-Marin, and Marin.

Abstract:Given a 3-cocycle $\psi$ in the cohomology of a finite group $G$, we can define the Dijkgraaf-Witten invariant of closed 3-manifolds. In this paper, we focus on the case where $\psi$ is a 3-cocycle canonically obtained from the second Chern class of a representation of $G$, and show some procedures for computing the invariant, and clarify its topological interpretation under some conditions.

Abstract:We consider left-invariant $G_2$-structures on $7$-dimensional almost Abelian Lie groups. Also, we characterise the associated torsion forms and the full torsion tensor according to the Lie bracket $A$ of the corresponding Lie algebra. In those terms, we establish the algebraic condition on $A$ for each of the possible $16$-torsion classes of a $G_2$-structure. In particular, we show that four of those torsion classes are not admissible, since $\tau_3=0$ implies $\tau_0=0$. Finally, we use the above results to provide the algebraic criteria on $A$, satisfying the harmonic condition $div T=0$, and this allows to identify which torsion classes are harmonic.

Abstract:In [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2008.04625" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.04625">arXiv:2008.04625</a>] the authors constructed a classifying space for polystable holomorphic vector bundles on a compact Kähler manifold using analytic GIT theory. The aim of this article is to show that this classifying space taken in the weakly normal category is a coarse moduli space in the sense of complex geometry when the topology is fixed as induced by the space of Hermite-Einstein connections modulo the group of unitary gauge transformations.
