Abstract:As an emerging interaction paradigm, physiological computing is increasingly being used to both measure and feed back information about our internal psychophysiological states. While most applications of physiological computing are designed for individual use, recent research has explored how biofeedback can be socially shared between multiple users to augment human-human communication. Reflecting on the empirical progress in this area of study, this paper presents a systematic review of 64 studies to characterize the interaction contexts and effects of social biofeedback systems. Our findings highlight the importance of physio-temporal and social contextual factors surrounding physiological data sharing as well as how it can promote social-emotional competences on three different levels: intrapersonal, interpersonal, and task-focused. We also present the Social Biofeedback Interactions framework to articulate the current physiological-social interaction space. We use this to frame our discussion of the implications and ethical considerations for future research and design of social biofeedback interfaces.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on two aspects: 1. **Systematically understanding the interactive environment of social biofeedback systems**: Although previous studies have explored the application of physiological signals as social cues and means of measuring social interactions, there is still a lack of systematic understanding of the interactive environment of social biofeedback systems at present. In particular, there are still knowledge gaps regarding in which physical, temporal and social environments these systems are used and how these environments affect their effectiveness. Therefore, one of the core problems of the paper is to identify and describe the characteristics of the interactive environment of social biofeedback systems, including physiological - temporal and social contexts, through a systematic review of existing literature. 2. **Evaluating the impact of social biofeedback on socio - emotional skills**: Another key issue is to explore whether social biofeedback can help users practice and develop socio - emotional skills, rather than just providing a short - lived experience. This involves analyzing the effectiveness of social biofeedback systems in promoting intimacy, connectivity and shared experiences among individuals, and whether these effects are persistent and transferable. To answer these questions, the author conducted a systematic literature review and comprehensively analyzed 64 studies, aiming to construct a comprehensive framework - the "Social Biofeedback Interactions framework" to describe the current physiological - social interaction space and discuss the ethical considerations and potential impacts of future research and design of social biofeedback interfaces. In addition, the paper also provides a qualitative analysis of the impact of social biofeedback on socio - emotional skills and a meta - analysis of its positive emotional effects.
