Abstract:Sea surface temperature (SST) proxies including B/Ca, Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, U/Ca and δ 18 O were analyzed in the skeleton of a Porites coral collected from the Zhujiang River (Pearl River) Estuary (ZRE). These geochemical proxies are influenced by river runoff and this area of the northern South China Sea is strongly affected by seasonal freshwater floods. We assessed the robustness of each SST proxy through comparison with the local instrumental SST. Coral Sr/Ca shows the highest correlation with SST variations ( r 2 =0.59), suggesting Sr/Ca is the most robust SST proxy. In contrast, coral δ 18 O ( r 2 =0.46), B/Ca ( r 2 =0.43) and U/Ca ( r 2 =0.41) ratios were only moderately correlated with SST variations, suggesting that they are disturbed by some other factors in addition to SST. The poor correlation ( r 2 =0.27) between SST and Mg/Ca indicates that Mg/Ca in coral skeletons is not a simple function of SST variations. This may ultimately limit the use of Mg/Ca as a coral paleothermometer.
The Responses of Sr/Ca, δ18O, and δ13C in the Porites Coral Skeleton to Extreme Thermal Events in the Nansha Islands

Abstract:In recent years, extreme thermal events have become one of the main reasons for coral reef degradation. Determining the variation of coral skeletal geochemical proxies in response to extreme thermal events would be vital evidence for reconstructing historical extreme thermal events using corals. In this study, cores from modern Porites corals YSL24 that lived in 1987-1999 and YSL2A that lived in 1971-1999 were collected from the Yongshu Reef, Nansha Islands, southern South China Sea (SCS) for high-resolution analysis of skeletal Sr/Ca, δ18O, and δ13C to determine the responses of these geochemical proxies to past extreme warming events. There is evidence that extreme warming events occurred in 1973, 1983 and 1998 in the southern SCS during the period 1971-1999. The Sr/Ca ratios in the Porites corals showed a significant negative correlation with the variation in local sea surface temperature (SST), and the values in the bands of these three years were much lower. This suggested a clear record of higher temperatures than other years in response to the warming events in these episodes. Compared with the Sr/Ca ratios, skeletal δ18O proxies in the two Porites corals also revealed a negative correlation with SST, but the δ18O values in these three bands were likely to be less sensitive to the thermal events. This is mainly because the variation in this proxy was controlled by both local SST and sea surface salinity, while the two factors had opposite effects on the seasonal variation of coral δ18O in the SCS. After the removal of the SST contributions, the ∆δ18O series of the Porites corals showed clear annual cycles and a negative correlation with seasonal precipitation, but the records in the bands of those warming years did not reveal clear anomalous shifts due to thermal stress, which might be an inappropriate proxy for identifying extreme warming episodes. In the skeletal δ13C series of Porites corals, an abnormal negative shift was detected during the summers of 1973, 1983, and 1998. This was likely caused by a substantial reduction in photosynthesis of symbiotic zooxanthellae in the coral host cells, a biological reaction of corals responding to thermal stress in the three years. In conclusion, the lower Sr/Ca ratios and negative δ13C shifts in the summer that occurred in the bands of Porites corals in this study, revealed significant coincidence with past extreme warming events. As the Porites corals had a stronger tolerance to thermal stress and much lower bleaching rates than other corals, the abnormal geochemical records in the Porites corals are potential signals indicating local past mass coral bleaching events in recent years.

Abstract:Degradation of inshore water quality associated with catchment modification is threatening global coral reef ecosystems. Coral trace element proxies are widely applied to document the magnitude and timing of historical changes in river runoff and other disturbances. However, conflicting interpretations of commonly used coral proxies (Ba/Ca, Y/Ca and Mn/Ca) complicate their application for examining historical changes in coastal water quality. The exploration of other coral trace element proxies (such as rare earth elements, REE) is limited in space and time, and to few coral genera. This study examined the dynamics of dissolved REE and yttrium (REEY) in the Fitzroy and Burdekin river tributaries and estuaries, Queensland, Australia. In addition, monthly-resolution long-term temporal records of Ba/Ca, Mn/Ca, Y/Ca and REEY proxies were investigated in two Porites and one Cyphastrea coral colonies from the central and southern Great Barrier Reef in order to test the reliability of these proxies to record the variability of river runoff and local anthropogenic disturbances. The results showed large scale removal of REEY (55 – 86 %) in the low salinity mixing zones of both estuaries with significant fractionation of Nd-Yb and Y-Ho, confirming the ability of coral REEY to act as a terrestrial runoff proxy. Coralline Ba/Ca, Y/Ca and Mn/Ca records generally lack coherence with proximal discharge. However, temporal fluctuations of REEY proxies, irrespective of geographic location and coral genus, showed consistent behaviour relative to regional discharge with progressive increase of total REE/Ca and shale normalized Nd/Yb and decrease of Y/Ho during high-flow summer periods. The shifting baselines of REEY proxies in Cyphastrea grown in the turbid water setting of Rat Island effectively captured the timing of Gladstone Port dredging activities. Our findings suggest that shale normalized coral REEY distributions outperformed other commonly used trace element proxies and are robust indicators of changing inshore water quality. Longer-term records of coral REEY, even covering the period before European settlement from the 1850s, may provide a means to identify shifting baselines and evaluate and quantify the impacts of catchment alteration on coastal water quality and specific coral reef communities.

Abstract:The abundances of some macronutrients, and trace elements (K, Al, P, V, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cs, Ba, Pb, Th, U, Y and REE) were determined in a series of coralline algae ( Lithothamnion corallioides ) samples ( n = 101) collected alive in the Bay of Brest and the Iroise Sea (Western Brittany, NW France), in order to assess the potential of these algae as archives of seawater chemistry and potential metal pollution. REY patterns are similar in shape to those of local seawater, exhibiting similar La, Ce and Y anomalies, but with abundances ranging between 4 and 5 orders of magnitude higher than seawater values. Variations in La anomalies (La/La* = 1.29–2.08), Y anomalies (Y/Ho = 38.6–55.8), and heavy rare earth enrichments (Pr sn /Er sn = 0.22–0.52) are consistent with mixing of seawater with rivers flowing into the Bay of Brest. The behavior of other trace elements, such as Al and Cs, also reflects this mixing. Other parameters and processes can control the abundances of the other elements measured. For example, the presence of organic matter in studied samples controls the abundances of K and Rb. The abundances of base metals (e.g., Co, Ni, Cu) are highly sensitive to the various pollutants present in the Bay of Brest. In particular, the Pb content of coralline algae clearly reflects the pollution caused by mining of a nearby Pb deposit from the 18th to the early 20th century. Our results demonstrate the potential of coralline algae not only for tracing water masses, but also for studying metal pollution.

Abstract:The Red Sea has been recognized as a coral reef refugia, but it is vulnerable to warming and pollution. Here we investigated the spatial and temporal trends of 15 element concentrations in 9 coral reef sediment cores (aged from the 1460s to the 1980s AD) to study the influence of global warming and industrialization on the Eastern Red Sea coral reefs. We found Na, Ca, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, and Sr concentrations were higher in the northern Red Sea (i.e., Yanbu), whereas Mg, P, S, Mn, and Cd concentrations were higher in the southern Red Sea (i.e., Thuwal & Al Lith) reef sediments. In the central (i.e., Thuwal) to southern (i.e., Al Lith) Red Sea, the study revealed diverse temporal trends in element concentrations. However, both reef sedimentation rates (−36.4 % and −80.5 %, respectively) and elemental accumulation rates (−49.4 % for Cd to −12.2 % for Zn in Thuwal, and −86.2 % for Co to −61.4 % for Cu in Al Lith) exhibited a declining pattern over time, possibly attributed to warming-induced thermal bleaching. In the central to northern Red Sea (i.e., Yanbu), the severity of thermal bleaching is low, while the reef sedimentation rates (187 %), element concentrations (6.7 % for S to 764 % for Co; except Na, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Cd), and all elemental accumulation rates (190 % for Mg to 2697 % for Co) exponentially increased from the 1970s, probably due the rapid industrialization in Yanbu. Our study also observed increased trace metal concentrations (e.g., Cu, Zn, and Ni) in the Thuwal and Al Lith coral reefs with severe bleaching histories, consistent with previous reports that trace metals might result in decreased resistance of corals to thermal stress under warming scenarios. Our study points to the urgent need to reduce the local discharge of trace metal pollutants to protect this biodiversity hotspot.

Abstract:We present a monthly resolved stable Ba isotope record (δ138Bacoral) of a young fossil coral (Porites) from the eastern side of the Andaman Islands (NE Indian Ocean), which grew prior to the 19th century. This δ138Bacoral record complements 19-years of monthly resolved Ba/Cacoral, Sr/Cacoral, U/Cacoral, δ18Ocoral and δ13Ccoral data from the same colony that can serve as a baseline of environmental variability before the industrialised era. The δ138Bacoral record exhibits small but significant seasonal variability ranging from 0.16 to 0.27 ± 0.03‰ over two continuous annual cycles. The δ138Bacoral signature is generally low during the South Asian summer monsoon (SAM, June-September) and post-SAM seasons (October-January), which are characterised by high Ba/Cacoral and more depleted δ18OSW values. We suggest that Ba desorption from suspended fluvial sediments followed by lateral advection are the main causes of the low δ138Bacoral and elevated Ba/Cacoral values during the SAM and post-SAM. However, this promising Ba proxy behaviour is interrupted by pronounced spikes of low δ138Bacoral and high Ba/Cacoral signatures observed during the pre-SAM season (February-May) throughout the 19-year record. Possible explanations for these spikes observed during dry seasons are (1) Ba enrichment associated with decreased mixed layer depth or (2) Ba release from sediments trapped by local fringing mangroves. Surface seawater from the coral site sampled over an annual cycle exhibits a wide range of dissolved δ138BaSW and [Ba]SW values, with significantly lowered δ138BaSW of 0.29 ± 0.04‰ and high [Ba]SW of 66.03 nmol/kg during the SAM, which is broadly consistent with the coral skeletal signals. Our results establish a clear link between monsoon-driven freshening events and Ba isotope variability of surface waters and assess the utility of coral skeletal Ba isotopes to trace riverine inputs into tropical coastal oceans.

Abstract:Coral reef ecosystems are delicately balanced and are thus prone to disruption by stressors such as storms, disease, climate variability and natural disasters. Most tropical coral populations worldwide are now in rapid decline owing to additional anthropogenic pressures, such as global warming, ocean acidification and a variety of local stressors. One such problem is the addition of excess sediment and nutrients flux to reefs from increased soil erosion from land use changes. Here we present century‐long Ba/Ca records from two Siderastrea siderea colonies as a proxy for local riverine discharge and sediment flux to the southern Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (MBRS). The coral colonies have linear extension trends, which can be seen as a first‐order indicator for coral health and response. The coral colony that exhibits a decline in linear extension rate from the forereef of the MBRS, mainly receives riverine input from Honduras, whilst the coral from the backreef, which does not exhibit a decline in extension rate, primarily receives riverine input from more sparsely populated regions of Belize. Coral Ba/Ca increased (>70%) through time in the forereef colony, while the backreef colony showed little long‐term increase in Ba/Ca over the last century. Our results suggest that increasing sediment supply may have played a role in the decline of forereef skeletal extension in the southernmost MBRS region, likely stemming from increasing land‐use changes in Honduras.

Elemental characteristics and biogeochemical cycles of trace metals in coastal seawater around coral reefs elucidated by multi-element profiling analyses

Abstract:The present study applied multi-element profiling analysis to the monitoring of coastal seawater around coral reefs to elucidate the elemental characteristics and the biogeochemical cycles. In temporal concentration variation, the long-term monitoring (monthly over one year) and short-term monitoring (3-hourly over two days) were subjected to multi-element determination by ICP-MS with solid phase extraction using chelating resin. In the long-term monitoring, the nutrient-type elements Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd and the scavenging-type elements Mn, Co, and Pb showed wide variations in their total, dissolved, and acid-soluble concentrations. The elevated total concentrations of Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in short-term variation of October 2011 were possibly caused by mucus secreted from coral. The increased concentrations of trace metals in the coastal seawater around the reefs might play important role to provide bio-essential trace metals to zooxanthellae living in symbiotic animals, such as corals, anemones, and giant clams.
The Distribution Coefficients of Major and Minor Elements in Coral Skeletons Under Variable Calcium Seawater Concentrations

Abstract:Coral skeletons are one of the best archives for past ocean seawater (SW) chemistry and isotopes. However, the distribution coefficients of major and minor elements in coral skeletons are not well determined. In this study, we launched an experiment to determine the distribution coefficients of multiple elements in corals’ skeletons by changing Ca concentrations in SW (Ca SW ). Two scleractinian corals, Pocillopora damicornis and Acropora cervicornis were cultured in modified Gulf of Eilat water (Red-Sea) with Ca SW of approximately 10, 15, 20, and 25 mM. After almost three months, the newly grown skeletons were analyzed for the following elements: Li, Na, Mg, K, Sr, and Ba. Their ratios to Ca in the coral skeleton (El/Ca coral ) increased linearly with El/Ca SW (with R 2 values above 0.98), crossing the origin and thus indicating constant distribution coefficient for each element over the experimental range of El/Ca SW . The values of D El were in good agreement with values reported for corals collected in natural seawater. However, differences were observed between the two species, and both were slightly deviating from inorganic aragonite D values. These deviations are well explained by Rayleigh fractionation process in the calcifying fluid (assuming it is mainly seawater). This was observed both for elements with D > 1 (Ba and Sr) and D < 1 (Li, Mg, Na, and K). P. damicornis showed open system behavior (∼20% of its Ca utilized) while A. cervicornis showed more closed calcifying reservoir (∼50% of its Ca utilized). The finding that the distribution coefficients of the six minor and trace elements are constant for a given species, should help in the reconstruction of past seawater chemistry based on multielement measurements in fossil corals. In particular, Na/Ca coral can be used to reconstruct past ocean Ca concentrations and with El/Ca coral ratios for other elements, their concentrations for the Cenozoic can be reconstructed.

Abstract:Excess nutrient loading to nearshore environments has been linked to declining water quality and ecosystem health. Macro-algal blooms, eutrophication, and reduction in coral cover have been observed in West Maui, Hawaii, and linked to nutrient inputs from coastal submarine groundwater seeps. Here, we present a forty-year record of nitrogen isotopes (δ15N) of intra-crystalline coral skeletal organic matter in three coral cores collected at this site and evaluate the record in terms of changes in nitrogen sources. Our results show a dramatic increase in coral δ15N values after 1995, corresponding with the implementation of biological nutrient removal at the nearby Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility (LWRF). High δ15N values are known to be strongly indicative of denitrification and sewage effluent, corroborating a previously suggested link between local wastewater injection and degradation of the reef environment. This record demonstrates the power of coral skeletal δ15N as a tool for evaluating nutrient dynamics within coral reef environments.

Abstract:Coral reefs play an important role in the high-resolution paleoclimate and paleoenvironment records. In particular, the contents, distribution patterns and elemental anomalies of the rare earth elements can reflect the paleoceanic conditions and sedimentary environments. In this study, we focus on the SSZK1 core in the Coral Reef of Yongxing Island, South China Sea (SCS). The sediments of this core can be divided into two stages: P1 (18.00-24.95m) and P2 (24.95-55.92m), based on the dating results. The results show that the coral reefs of P1 and P2 stages have slightly different REE contents, but similar REE+Y patterns. In general, the REE+Y patterns of both P1 and P2 stages are similar to those of normal marine carbonates (rocks), showing LREE depletion, negative Ce anomaly and high Y/Ho ratios. This indicates that the REEs of coral preserved their pristine geochemical features although they have experienced the diagenetic alteration to some degree. However, the samples, such as the YX-2300 coral bone formed at 114 ka, have obvious positive Eu anomalies except the similar REE+Y characteristics as the normal marine carbonates (rocks). The positive Eu anomalies indicate that some hydrothermal fluids may be input into the surrounding water at the time of coral bone formation. Based on the model calculations, at least 0.1% of hydrothermal fluids were added to the surrounding seawater during the growth of YX-2300 coral bone. By comparing the data and ages, it is suggested that these hydrothermal fluids could be associated with volcanic activities on Gaojishi Island or Hainan Island. This evidence is important to trace the occurrence of modern worldwide volcanism or deep faults activity in the deep-sea.

Abstract:The impacts of ocean acidification on coral reef macroalgal community composition and metabolism have implications for the habitat supporting capacity of future reefs. In this pilot study, we use co-located semi-hourly measurements of total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity, and the stable carbon isotope composition of DIC ( δ 13 C DIC ) over a 27 + h period from Tetiaroa Atoll, French Polynesia, to investigate the potential for reef carbonate chemistry to record information related to benthic photosynthetic community composition and response to natural gradients in ambient acidity and dissolved carbon dioxide. The results of this preliminary sampling and modeling exercise suggest that Tetiaroa's macroalgal communities express plastic carbon-concentrating mechanisms (CCMs) over daily cycles of productivity but may potentially vary this expression as a function of ambient CO 2 and acidity within the ecosystem. Additional studies are, therefore, underway to investigate the implications of these observations for reef macroalgal compositional differences under rapidly acidifying oceans.

Abstract:Water clarity on the inshore Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is greatly influenced by terrestrial runoff of suspended particulate matter (SPM). Catchment sediment tracing studies often do not extend into the marine environment, preventing the analysis of preferential marine transport. This study employs novel collection and sediment tracing techniques to examine the transport of the terrigenous 'mineral' component of plume SPM within the GBR lagoon for two flood events. Utilising geochemical, radionuclide and clay mineral analysis, we trace terrigenous mineral sediments > 100 km from the river mouth. We show that the SPM geochemistry is highly influenced by particle-size fractionation, desorption, and dilution within the plume, rendering traditional tracing methods unviable. However, the ratios of rare earth elements (REE) to thorium (Th) provide stable tracers of mineral SPM transported across the catchment to marine continuum and allow the identification of discrete catchment sources for each flood event. Plume sediment radionuclides are also stable and consistent with sub-surface erosion sources.
Stable isotopes reveal spatial variability in the trophic structure of a macro-benthic invertebrate community in a tropical coral reef

Abstract:Rationale: Studies of organic matter fluxes in coral reefs are historically based on physical and biogeochemical approaches. It is important to link these approaches to community analysis as the abundance and behaviour of species, populations or trophic groups can have a profound effect on nutrient budgets. Methods: We determined the carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions of coral reef organic matter sources and macro-benthic invertebrate communities using a Europa Geo 20/20 isotope ratio mass spectrometer interfaced to an ANCA-SL elemental analyzer in continuous flow mode. Isotopic ecology metrics and a mixing model were used to analyze and interpret the data. Results: The coral reef macro-invertebrate community principally relies on detrital or recycled food sources. An increased reliance on reef nitrogen-derived sources was observed in the cold-dry season. The community food-web lengths differ noticeably across the coral reef and reflect the characteristics and origin of organic matter reservoirs. Conclusions: Anthropogenic and terrestrial inputs lead to a loss of biological diversity. Exclusive dominance of suspension-feeding species is observed in areas receiving direct surface riverine particulate organic matter. The accumulation of sediment organic matter in eutrophic areas leads to dominance of deposit-feeding species. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
A benthic bioindicator reveals distinct land and ocean-Based influences in an urbanized coastal embayment

Abstract:Biogeochemical maps of coastal regions can be used to identify important influences and inputs that define nearshore environments and biota. Biogeochemical tracers can also track animal movement and their diet, monitor human coastal development, and evaluate the condition of habitats and species. However, the beneficial applications of spatial biogeochemical analysis are hindered by a limited understanding of how tracer distribution is affected by different land and ocean-based influences. To help address these knowledge gaps, we determined the spatial trends of three stable isotopes (δ13C-carbon, δ15N-nitrogen, δ34S-sulfur) and 13 major and trace elements in an urbanized coastal embayment (Moreton Bay, Australia), as incorporated into the muscle tissue of a marine consumer, the eastern king prawn Melicertus plebejus. Results were used to identify unique biochemical regions within the bay and to discuss how spatial patterns in tracers could be used to indicate the relative importance of catchment, urban and offshore drivers in coastal bays. Discriminant analysis identified seven biogeochemical regions that were likely distinguished by variation in catchment, urban, and offshore input, and habitat type. δ13C and δ15N patterns suggested nearshore areas could be distinguished by increased sediment resuspension and higher wastewater inputs from catchments. High inshore lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) concentrations were likely the result of urban input. Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) increased further from shore. This trend implied oceanic influences were a significant control over As and Cd bioavailability. Cobalt (Co) and rare earths were also used to differentiate some nearshore areas, but incongruent distribution patterns in Co suggested it may be less reliable. Overall, results indicated that δ15N, δ13C, Cd, Cu, Pb and rare earth elements were the most reliable tracers to differentiate nearshore and offshore environments, and catchment-based effects. We encourage future studies to consider using a similar multivariate approach in coastal spatial analysis, and to include unrelated tracers that reflect distinct coastal influences.
Rare earth element geochemistry of Middle Devonian reefal limestones of the Dianqiangui Basin, South China: implications for nutrient sources and expansion of the reef ecosystem

Abstract:The Givetian Age witnessed the greatest expansion of stromatoporoid-coral reefs from low to higher latitudes of the Phanerozoic. Multi-proxy seawater surface temperature reconstruction suggests the establishment of a super-greenhouse climate as a major reason for reef expansion, yet many questions remain. This article presents the results of a rare earth element and yttrium (herein referred to as REY, derived from REE + Y) geochemical study as well as mineralogy and oxygen isotope values of two well-documented Middle Givetian reefal carbonate sections (Jiwozhai and Buzhai) of the Jiwozhai Formation of South China. The nearshore Jiwozhai patch reef succession displays greater biodiversity and more abundant coral than the marginal platform Upper Buzhai reef. Reefal and micritic carbonates of the Jiwozhai section are characterized by shale-like post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalized REY patterns, by very weak negative Ce anomaly values (Ce/Ce* 0.80-0.96; average = 0.89), slightly elevated Y/Ho values (28.9-39.1; average = 34.1), and near-unity values of (Pr/Yb)N (average = 0.87), (Pr/Tb)N (average = 0.80), and (Tb/Yb)N (average = 1.09). Moreover, REY patterns of deposits of the Jiwozhai section differ markedly from those of modern seawater. The described geochemical aspects of the Jiwozhai section and the positive correlation of REY and Th contents displayed by the section point to a terrestrial siliciclastic contribution contemporaneous with reef-building. In contrast, REY patterns of the Upper Buzhai reef section samples are similar to those of modern seawater characterized by light rare earth element (LREE) depletion (average (Pr/Yb)N = 0.76), negative Ce anomalies (average Ce/Ce* = 0.88), and average super-chondritic Y/Ho ratios (average = 45.4)). Slightly positive Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.93-1.94; average = 1.36) of the Upper Buzhai reef section samples are attributed to the negligible effect of hydrothermal fluids. Middle REE (MREE) enrichment (average (Tb/Yb)N = 1.48) of Buzhai section carbonate samples and positive correlation of REY and Th suggest a riverine input. Combined with siliciclastic mineralogy, oxygen isotope values, and reef-building biota morphology of the studied two sections, we suggest that terrestrial nutrients delivered by rivers far outweighed upwelling as a source of nutrients supplied to the Givetian reef ecosystem of South China. Coral and stromatoporoid in tropic oceans thrived in turbid water containing abundant terrestrial sediment and the nutrient-laden water helped expand reef-builder habitats during the Givetian time.
N and C Isotope Variations Along an Extreme Eutrophication and Salinity Gradient in the Coorong Lagoon, South Australia

Abstract:The Coorong Lagoon is a unique hydrological and depositional system at the terminus of the Murray–Darling Basin, the largest river system in Australia. It exhibits large salinity, nutrient, and organic matter gradients, providing a modern analogue to study and validate the use of δ 15 N and δ 13 C as tracers of past and contemporary geochemical cycles in estuarine environments. To this end, water and surface sediment samples were analyzed for particulate organic nitrogen (PON) and carbon (POC) concentrations, and the respective δ 15 N and δ 13 C signatures of particulate nitrogen and carbon. PON and POC exhibited positive relationships to chlorophyll-a, indicating the dominance of phytoplankton production upon suspended organic matter. There was also a general trend of increasing δ 15 N of PON (δ 15 N PON ) values and decreasing δ 13 C of particulate carbon (δ 13 C PC ) values with increasing salinity and eutrophication in the restricted South Lagoon. In a multiple linear regression for δ 15 N PON , the best two predictors in combination are PON and C:N molar ratio, highlighting the importance of productivity and the type or source of organic matter. For δ 13 C PC , the best two predictors are total dissolved phosphorus and latitude, suggesting influences from productivity and proximity to the ocean. Sediment δ 15 N values across the Coorong Lagoon overlap with the δ 15 N PON in the water column, suggesting that PON derived from algal material represents the main source of nitrogen to lagoon sediments. We hypothesize that limited N loss via denitrification leads to PON being recycled almost exclusively to ammonium, due to low rates of nitrification and dominance of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). We propose that preferential volatilization of 14 N in ammonia increases the δ 15 N of ammonium assimilated by phytoplankton, thereby increasing the δ 15 N within suspended organic matter and surface sediment in the South Lagoon. By contrast, the gradient exhibited in δ 13 C PC data was countered by a relatively constant sedimentary organic carbon δ 13 C. Data from the Coorong, therefore, suggest that δ 15 N values in sediments can be used to infer palaeoproductivity in this hypereutrophic and hypersaline depositional environment, however, the measured δ 13 C PC may be influenced by δ 13 C DIC or preferential loss of 13 C during sedimentation that alter the sedimentary δ 13 C record of organic carbon.

Abstract:Stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) in marine ecosystem are useful proxies for environmental record. In this study, a time-series analysis of δ13C and δ15N in two black coral samples collected from off-shore and near-shore environment was performed to investigate variations in climate and environment changes over the last 110 years. The results showed a decreasing trend of δ13C in both samples, implying an increase of fossil fuel consumption in modern age - the Suess effect. Meanwhile, a difference in δ15N between the offshore and nearshore black coral samples can be attributed to atmospheric transport of natural terrigenous source input and local anthropogenic activities. This study demonstrates that black coral has advantages as an environmental proxy compared with other traditional ones, and suggests that δ13C and δ15N in black coral can be used as new proxy indicators for climate changes related to anthropogenic activities.

Abstract:Despite being some of the largest bio-constructions on the planet, coral reefs are made by many millions of cm- to mm-sized polyps of Scleractinian corals. Calcification occurs in a micron sized space sandwiched between the coral animal and the existing skeleton, known as the extra cellular medium (ECM). The coral animal has a tight control on the carbonate system in this space through deploying enzymatic pumps (e.g. Ca-ATPase) and secreting acidic-rich proteins. Tracking the state of the carbonate system in the ECM is therefore key to forming a mechanistic understanding of how environmental change, such as ocean acidification, influences skeletal formation and ultimately the growth and resilience of these important ecosystems.Traditional means to examine ECM composition is through the use of micro-electrodes. While these approaches have revealed many key insights they are, by their nature, invasive.&#160; They also only provide snap shots of information for corals grown in the laboratory. The boron isotopic composition of the coral skeleton and its boron content (expressed as B/Ca ratio) have recently emerged as a viable alternative approach to fully characterise the carbonate system in the ECM.&#160; However, most studies employ bulk sampling techniques which require averaging across both structural elements of the coral skeleton and many months to years of growth. Laser ablation MC-ICP-MS approaches are now available as an alternative sampling protocol (e.g. Standish et al. 2019), and along with B/Ca (and other trace element) measurements this not only allows a reconstruction of the full carbonate system of the ECM from an analysis of the skeleton of any coral (cultured or wild) at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution, but it also allows an examination of the influence of the carbonate system in the ECM on trace element incorporation.&#160;Here we present boron isotope and trace element analyses of several tropical, reef-building, corals to examine the nature and magnitude of fine scale variation in ECM composition.&#160; By studying corals from locations where external seawater is well known we also gain insights into trace element incorporation and whether external seawater pH can be accurately reconstructed from the boron-based proxies at weekly (or better) resolution.&#160;&#160;Standish, C.D., Chalk, T.B., Babila, T.L., Milton, J.A., Palmer, M.R., Foster, G.L. Abstract:Globally, coral reefs are under threat, with many exhibiting degradation or a shift towards algal-dominated regimes following marine heat waves, and other disturbance events. Marginal coral reefs existing under naturally extreme conditions, such as turbid water reefs, may be more resilient than their clear water counterparts as well as offer some insight into how reefs could look in the future under climate change. Here, we surveyed 27 benthic habitats across an environmental stress gradient in the Exmouth Gulf region of north Western Australia immediately following a marine heatwave event. We used multidecadal remotely sensed turbidity (from an in-situ validated dataset) and temperature, to assess how these environmental drivers influence variability in benthic communities and coral morphology. Long-term turbidity and temperature variability were associated with macroalgal colonisation when exceeding a combined threshold. Coral cover was strongly negatively associated with temperature variability, and positively associated with depth, and wave power, while coral morphology diversity was positively associated with turbidity. While moderate turbidity (long-term average ~ 2 mg/L suspended matter) appeared to raise the threshold for coral bleaching and macroalgal dominance, regions with higher temperature variability (> 3.5 °C) appeared to have already reached this threshold. The region with the least turbidity and temperature variability had the highest amount of coral bleaching from a recent heatwave event and moderate levels of both these variables may confer resilience to coral reefs.
