On the Measure of Maximal Entropy for Finite Horizon Sinai Billiard Maps

Abstract:The Sinai billiard map $T$ on the two-torus, i.e., the periodic Lorentz gas, is a discontinuous map. Assuming finite horizon, we propose a definition $h_*$ for the topological entropy of $T$. We prove that $h_*$ is not smaller than the value given by the variational principle, and that it is equal to the definitions of Bowen using spanning or separating sets. Under a mild condition of sparse recurrence to the singularities, we get more: First, using a transfer operator acting on a space of anisotropic distributions, we construct an invariant probability measure $\mu_*$ of maximal entropy for $T$ (i.e., $h_{\mu_*}(T)=h_*$), we show that $\mu_*$ has full support and is Bernoulli, and we prove that $\mu_*$ is the unique measure of maximal entropy, and that it is different from the smooth invariant measure except if all non grazing periodic orbits have multiplier equal to $h_*$. Second, $h_*$ is equal to the Bowen--Pesin--Pitskel topological entropy of the restriction of $T$ to a non-compact domain of continuity. Last, applying results of Lima and Matheus, as upgraded by Buzzi, the map $T$ has at least $C e^{nh_*}$ periodic points of period $n$ for all large enough $n \in \mathbb{N}$.

Billiards in generic convex bodies have positive topological entropy

Abstract:We show that there exists a $C^2$ open dense set of convex bodies with smooth boundary whose billiard map exhibits a non-trivial hyperbolic basic set. As a consequence billiards in generic convex bodies have positive topological entropy and exponential growth of the number of periodic orbits.

Abstract:A systematic numerical technique for the calculation of unstable periodic orbits in the stadium billiard is presented. All the periodic orbits up to order $p=11$ are calculated and then used to calculate the average Lyapunov exponent and the topological entropy. Applications to semiclassical quantization and to experiments in mesoscopic systems and microwave cavities are noted.

Abstract:Using recent work of Carrand on equilibrium states for the billiard map, and bootstrapping via a "leapfrogging" method from a previous article of Baladi and Demers, we construct the unique measure of maximal entropy for two-dimensional finite horizon Sinai (dispersive) billiard flows (and show it is Bernoulli), assuming that the topological entropy of the flow is strictly larger than s_0 log 2 where 0<s_0<1 quantifies the recurrence to singularities. This bound holds in many examples (it is expected to hold generically).

Abstract:In the paper, we establish Squash Rigidity Theorem - the dynamical spectral rigidity for piecewise analytic Bunimovich squash-type stadia. We also establish Stadium Rigidity Theorem - the dynamical spectral rigidity for piecewise analytic Bunimovich stadia whose flat boundaries are a priori fixed. In addition, for smooth Bunimovich squash-type stadia we compute the Lyapunov exponents along the maximal period two orbit, as well as the value of the Peierls' Barrier function from the maximal marked length spectrum associated to the rotation number $\frac{2n}{4n+1}$.

Abstract:We show that for the standard map family, for all values of the parameter, except one, the mapping has positive topological entropy. The main tool is the following result. Let $S$ be a compact connected orientable surface and $f:S \rightarrow S$ an area preserving orientation preserving $C \e 1$ diffeomorphism of $S$. Assume that $U$ is an invariant domain of $S$ such that $fr_S{U}$ has a finite number of connected components. Let $b$ be a regular ideal boundary point of $U$ which is fixed under the induced action by $f$ on the ideal boundary of $U$, and let $\hat{f}:C(b) \rightarrow C(b)$ the homeomorphism on the corresponding circle of prime ends. Let $Z(b)$ be the impression of $b$ in $S$ and assume that all fixed points of $f$ in $Z(b)$ are non degenerate. If there exists a fixed prime end $e \in C(b)$ then we know the following. $\left(1\right)$ If $p$ is the principal point of $e$ then $p$ is also a fixed point of $Z(b)$ and $p$ is a saddle. $\left(2\right)$ $C(b)$ has a finite number of fixed prime ends and there exists a finite singular covering $ \phi :C(b) \rightarrow Z(b)$, which is a semiconjugacy between the mapping of prime ends on $C(b)$ and the restriction of $f$ to $Z(b)$. In particular, $Z(b)$ is the connected union of finitely many saddle connections and the corresponding saddles. This can be seen as a two dimensional generalization of the dynamics of homeomorphisms of the circle with fixed points.

Abstract:Combining two existing rigorous computational methods, for verifying hyperbolicity (due to Arai) and for computing topological entropy bounds (due to Day et al.), we prove lower bounds on topological entropy for 43 hyperbolic plateaus of the Hénon map. We also examine the 16 area-preserving plateaus studied by Arai and compare our results with related work. Along the way, we augment the algorithms of Day et al. with routines to optimize the algorithmic parameters and simplify the resulting semi-conjugate subshift.

Abstract:We characterize the volume entropy of an arbitrary regular building as the topological pressure of the geodesic flow on an apartment. We show that the Liouville measure is not entropy maximizing measure for regular hyperbolic buildings. As a consequence, we obtain a strict lower bound on the volume entropy in terms of the branching numbers and the volume of the boundary polyhedrons.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate spectral complexity and Krylov complexity in quantum billiard systems at finite temperature. We study both circle and stadium billiards as paradigmatic examples of integrable and non-integrable quantum-mechanical systems, respectively. We show that the saturation value and time scale of spectral complexity may be used to probe the non-integrability of the system since we find that when computed for the circle billiard, it saturates at a later time scale compared to the stadium billiards. This observation is verified for different temperatures. Furthermore, we study the Krylov complexity of the position operator and its associated Lanczos coefficients at finite temperature using the Wightman inner product. We find that the growth rate of the Lanczos coefficients saturates the conjectured universal bound at low temperatures. Additionally, we also find that even a subset of the Lanczos coefficients can potentially serve as an indicator of integrability, as they demonstrate erratic behavior specifically in the circle billiard case, in contrast to the stadium billiard. Finally, we also study Krylov entropy and verify its early-time logarithmic relation with Krylov complexity in both types of billiard systems.

Compactness of Marked Length Isospectral Sets of Birkhoff Billiard Tables

Abstract:We prove that equivalence classes of marked length isospectral Birkhoff billiard tables are compact in the $C^\infty$ topology, analogous to the Laplace spectral results of Melrose, Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak. To do so, we derive a hierarchical structure for the integral invariants of Marvizi and Melrose, or equivalently the coefficients of a caustic length-Lazutkin parameter expansion, which are in turn algebraically equivalent to the Taylor coefficients of Mather's $\beta$ function (also called the mean minimal action). Under a generically satisfied noncoincidence condition, these are also Laplace spectral invariants and can be used to hear the shape of certain drumheads. As a byproduct, we obtain an independent proof of the compactness of Laplace isospectral sets for strictly convex planar billiard tables. The proof of the structure theorem uses an interpolating Hamiltonian for nearly glancing billiard orbits and some analytic number theory to compute its Taylor coefficients.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable discrete amenable group which acts continuously on a compact metric space $X$ and let $\mu$ be an ergodic $G-$invariant Borel probability measure on $X$. For a fixed tempered Følner sequence $\{F_n\}$ in $G$ with $\lim\limits_{n\rightarrow+\infty}\frac{|F_n|}{\log n}=\infty$, we prove the following variational principle: $$h^B(G_{\mu},\{F_n\})=h_{\mu}(X,G),$$ where $G_{\mu}$ is the set of generic points for $\mu$ with respect to $\{F_n\}$ and $h^B(G_{\mu},\{F_n\})$ is the Bowen topological entropy (along $\{F_n\}$) on $G_{\mu}$. This generalizes the classical result of Bowen in 1973.

A direct proof of the existence of MME for finite horizon Sinai billiards

Abstract:The Sinai billiard map $T$ on the two-torus, i.e., the periodic Lorentz gaz, is a discontinuous map. Assuming finite horizon and bounded complexity, we prove that the Kolmogorov--Sinai entropy map associated with the billiard map $T$ is upper semi-continuous, as well as the compactness of the set of $T$-invariant measures. In particular, for the potentials $g \equiv 0$ and $g = -h_{\rm top}(\Phi_1) \tau$, we recover the recent results of the existence of measures of maximal entropy (MME) for both the billiard map and flow $\Phi_t$, due to Baladi and Demers for $T$, jointly with Carrand for $\Phi_t$. For general finite horizon Sinai billiards, we provide bounds on the defect of upper semi-continuity of the entropy map and on the topological tail entropy. The bounded complexity condition is expected to hold generically.

Abstract:Dynamical properties of the elliptical stadium billiard, which is a generalization of the stadium billiard and a special case of the recently introduced mushroom billiards, are investigated analytically and numerically. In dependence on two shape parameters delta and gamma, this system reveals a rich interplay of integrable, mixed and fully chaotic behavior. Poincare sections, the box counting method and the stability analysis determine the structure of the parameter space and the borders between regions with different behavior. Results confirm the existence of a large fully chaotic region surrounding the straight line delta=1-gamma corresponding to the Bunimovich circular stadium billiard. Bifurcations due to the hour-glass and multidiamond orbits are described. For the quantal elliptical stadium billiard, statistical properties of the level spacing fluctuations are examined and compared with classical results.

Abstract:We prove Poisson limit laws for open billiard systems with holes in the boundary of billiard tables. Traditionally some abstract holes in the phase space of a billiard were studied. Holes in the boundary are of an intrinsic interest for billiard systems, especially for applications. Sinai billiards with or without a finite horizon, diamond billiards, and semi-dispersing billiards are considered. However, the emphasis is on focusing billiards with slow decay of correlations, where various new technical difficulties arise.

On the complexity of polygonal billiards

Abstract:We show that the complexity of the billiard in a typical polygon grows cubically and the number of saddle connections grows quadratically along certain subsequences. It is known that the set of points whose first n-bounces hits the same sequence of sides as the orbit of an aperiodic phase point z converges to z. We establishe a polynomial lower bound estimate on this convergence rate for almost every z. This yields an upper bound on the upper metric complexity and upper slow entropy of polygonal billiards. We also prove significant deviations from the expected convergence behavior. Finally we extend these results to higher dimensions as well as to arbitrary invariant measures.
