Abstract:We study deformations of certain crepant resolutions of isolated rational Gorenstein singularities. After a general discussion of the deformation theory, we specialize to dimension three and consider examples which are good (log) resolutions as well as the case of small resolutions. We obtain some partial results on the classification of canonical threefold singularities that admit good crepant resolutions. Finally, we study a non-crepant example, the blowup of a small resolution whose exceptional set is a smooth curve.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the study of the deformation theory of certain local Calabi - Yau manifolds. Specifically, the authors study the crepant resolutions of Calabi - Yau manifolds with isolated rational Gorenstein singularities and their deformations. The main objectives of the paper can be summarized as follows:
1. **General discussion of deformation theory**:
- The paper first conducts an extensive discussion of deformation theory, especially the deformation theory of crepant resolutions of isolated rational Gorenstein singularities. This includes studies from both local and global aspects.
- Locally, if \(x\in Y\) is a singularity, one can study the deformation functor Def(Y, x) of the germ (Y, x). In particular, the tangent space of this functor, that is, the "first - order deformation", is classified by the finite - dimensional vector space \(T^1_{Y,x}\).
- Globally, for a compact analytic space \(Y\), there is a deformation functor Def \(Y\), and its tangent space is a finite - dimensional vector space \(T^1_Y\).
2. **Special study of the three - dimensional case**:
- The paper pays special attention to the three - dimensional case and considers examples of good (log) resolutions and small resolutions.
- The authors obtain some partial results on the classification of classical triple singularities with good crepant resolutions in the three - dimensional case.
3. **Study of non - crepant examples**:
- The paper also studies a non - crepant example, that is, the Blow - up of a small resolution, whose exceptional set is a smooth curve.
4. **Main obstacles and solutions**:
- In the local setting, whether the image of \(H^1(\tilde{X}, T_{\tilde{X}})\) in \(H^0(X, T^1_X)\) is a birational invariant, that is, not independent of the choice of good resolutions.
- In the global setting, there are difficulties in lifting these deformations to global deformations. Especially in the three - dimensional and small - resolution cases, this problem is related to the Clemens conjecture.
5. **Main results**:
- Theorem 1.6 gives some very general results on the first - order deformations of \(\tilde{X}\) and their relationship with the first - order deformations of \(E\).
- Theorem 0.2 partially classifies isolated Gorenstein classical singularities with good crepant resolutions.
- Theorem 0.3 further explores the deformation - theory invariants of different types of singularities.
Through these studies, the authors hope to better understand the geometric structure of Calabi - Yau manifolds and their deformation theory, especially the applications in the three - dimensional case. This not only helps to understand the properties of these singularities but also provides an important tool for the geometric study of moduli spaces.
