Abstract:We prove that the normal metric on the homogeneous space $E_7/\mathrm{PSO}(8)$ is stable with respect to the Einstein-Hilbert action, thereby exhibiting the first known example of a non-symmetric metric of positive scalar curvature with this property.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce notions of nonlinear stabilities for a relative ample line bundle over a holomorphic fibration and define the notion of a geodesic-Einstein metric on this line bundle, which generalize the classical stabilities and Hermitian-Einstein metrics of holomorphic vector bundles. We introduce a Donaldson type functional and show that this functional attains its absolute minimum at geodesic-Einstein metrics, and we also discuss the relations between the existence of geodesic-Einstein metrics and the nonlinear stabilities of the line bundle. As an application, we will prove that a holomorphic vector bundle admits a Finsler-Einstein metric if and only if it admits a Hermitian-Einstein metric, which answers a problem posed by S. Kobayashi.
Stability of standard Einstein metrics on homogeneous spaces of non-simple Lie groups

Abstract:The classification of compact homogeneous spaces of the form $M=G/K$, where $G$ is a non-simple Lie group, such that the standard metric is Einstein is still open. The only known examples are $4$ infinite families and $3$ isolated spaces found by Nikonorov and Rodionov in the 90s. In this paper, we prove that most of these standard Einstein metrics are unstable as critical points of the scalar curvature functional on the manifold of all unit volume $G$-invariant metrics on $M$, providing a lower bound for the coindex in the case of Ledger-Obata spaces. On the other hand, examples of stable (in particular, local maxima) invariant Einstein metrics on certain homogeneous spaces of non-simple Lie groups are also given.

Abstract:We consider the homogeneous space $M=H\times H/\Delta K$, where $H/K$ is an irreducible symmetric space and $\Delta K$ denotes diagonal embedding. Recently, Lauret and Will provided a complete classification of $H\times H$-invariant Einstein metrics on M. They obtained that there is always at least one non-diagonal Einstein metric on $M$, and in some cases, diagonal Einstein metrics also exist. We give a formula for the scalar curvature of a subset of $H\times H$-invariant metrics and study the stability of non-diagonal Einstein metrics on $M$ with respect to the Hilbert action, obtaining that these metrics are unstable with different coindexes for all homogeneous spaces $M$.

Abstract:We prove that the irreducible symmetric space of complex structures on $\mathbb R^{2n}$ (resp.\ quaternionic structures on $\mathbb C^{2n}$) is spectrally unique within a $2$-parameter (resp.\ $3$-parameter) family of homogeneous metrics on the underlying differentiable manifold. Such families are strong candidates to contain all homogeneous metrics admitted on the corresponding manifolds. The main tool in the proof is an explicit expression for the smallest positive eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator associated to each homogeneous metric involved. As a second consequence of this expression, we prove that any non-symmetric Einstein metric in the homogeneous families mentioned above are $\nu$-unstable.

Abstract:The action of the subgroup $\operatorname{G}_2$ of $\operatorname{SO}(7)$ (resp.\ $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$ of $\operatorname{SO}(8)$) on the Grassmannian space $M=\frac{\operatorname{SO}(7)}{\operatorname{SO}(5)\times\operatorname{SO}(2)}$ (resp.\ $M=\frac{\operatorname{SO}(8)}{\operatorname{SO}(5)\times\operatorname{SO}(3)}$) is still transitive. We prove that the spectrum (i.e.\ the collection of eigenvalues of its Laplace-Beltrami operator) of a symmetric metric $g_0$ on $M$ coincides with the spectrum of a $\operatorname{G}_2$-invariant (resp.\ $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$-invariant) metric $g$ on $M$ only if $g_0$ and $g$ are isometric. As a consequence, each non-flat compact irreducible symmetric space of non-group type is spectrally unique among the family of all currently known homogeneous metrics on its underlying differentiable manifold.

A conformal approach to the stability of Einstein spaces with spatial sections of negative scalar curvature

Abstract:In this article, it is shown how the extended conformal Einstein field equations and a gauge based on the properties of conformal geodesics can be used to analyse the non-linear stability of de Sitter-like spacetimes with spatial sections of negative scalar curvature. This class of spacetimes admits a smooth conformal extension with a space-like conformal boundary. Central to the analysis is the use of conformal Gaussian systems to obtain a hyperbolic reduction of the conformal Einstein field equations for which standard Cauchy stability results for symmetric hyperbolic systems can be employed. The use of conformal methods allows us to rephrase the question of the global existence of solutions to the Einstein field equations into considerations of finite existence time for the conformal evolution system.

Positive scalar curvature with point singularities

Abstract:We show that in every dimension $n \geq 8$, there exists a smooth closed manifold $M^n$ which does not admit a smooth positive scalar curvature ("psc") metric, but $M$ admits an $\mathrm{L}^\infty$-metric which is smooth and has psc outside a singular set of codimension $\geq 8$. This provides counterexamples to a conjecture of Schoen. In fact, there are such examples of arbitrarily high dimension with only single point singularities. We also discuss related phenomena on exotic spheres and tori. In addition, we provide examples of $\mathrm{L}^\infty$-metrics on $\mathbb{R}^n$ for certain $n \geq 8$ which are smooth and have psc outside the origin, but cannot be smoothly approximated away from the origin by everywhere smooth Riemannian metrics of non-negative scalar curvature. This stands in precise contrast to established smoothing results via Ricci-DeTurck flow for singular metrics with stronger regularity assumptions. Finally, as a positive result, we describe a $\mathrm{KO}$-theoretic condition which obstructs the existence of $\mathrm{L}^\infty$-metrics that are smooth and of psc outside a finite subset. This shows that closed enlargeable spin manifolds do not carry such metrics.

Abstract:We prove that in any rank one symmetric space of non-compact type $M\in\{\mathbb{R} H^n,\mathbb{C} H^m,\mathbb{H} H^m,\mathbb{O} H^2\}$, geodesic spheres are uniformly quantitatively stable with respect to small $C^1$-volume preserving perturbations. We quantify the gain of perimeter in terms of the $W^{1,2}$-norm of the perturbation, taking advantage of the explicit spectral gap of the Laplacian on geodesic spheres in $M$. As a consequence, we give a quantitative proof that for small volumes, geodesic spheres are isoperimetric regions among all sets of finite perimeter.

Abstract:We construct new classes of exact solutions in metric--affine gravity (MAG) with string corrections by the antisymmetric $H$--field. The solutions are parametrized by generic off--diagonal metrics possessing noncommutative symmetry associated to anholonomy framerelations and related nonlinear connection (N--connection) structure. We analyze the horizon and geodesic properties of a class of off--diagonal metrics with deformed spherical symmetries. The maximal analytic extension of ellipsoid type metrics are constructed and the Penrose diagrams are analyzed with respect to adapted frames. We prove that for small deformations (small eccentricities) there are such metrics that the geodesic behaviour is similar to the Schwarzcshild one. The new class of spacetimes do not possess Killing symmetries even in the limits to the general relativity and, in consequence, they are not prohibited by black hole uniqueness theorems. Such static ellipsoid (rotoid) configurations are compatible with the cosmic cenzorship criteria. We study the perturbations of two classes of static black ellipsoid solutions of four dimensional gravitational field equations. We conclude that such anisotropic black hole objects may be stable with respect to the perturbations parametrized by the Schrodinger equations in the framework of the one--dimensional inverse scattering theory.

Abstract:Given an embedded stable hypersurface in a four-dimensional symplectic manifold, we prove that it is stable isotopic to a $C^0$-close stable hypersurface with the following property: $C^\infty$-nearby hypersurfaces are generically unstable. This shows that the stability property is neither open nor generic, independently of the isotopy class of hypersurfaces and ambient symplectic manifold. The proof combines tools from stable Hamiltonian topology with techniques in three-dimensional dynamics such as partial sections, integrability and KAM theory. On our way, we establish non-density properties of Reeb-like flows and a generic non-integrability theorem for cohomologous Hamiltonian structures and volume-preserving fields in dimension three.

Abstract:Given any compact homogeneous space $H/K$ with $H$ simple, we consider the new space $M=H\times H/\Delta K$, where $\Delta K$ denotes diagonal embedding, and study the existence, classification and stability of $H\times H$-invariant Einstein metrics on $M$, as a first step into the largely unexplored case of homogeneous spaces of compact non-simple Lie groups. We find unstable Einstein metrics on $M$ for most spaces $H/K$ such that their standard metric is Einstein (e.g., isotropy irreducible) and the Killing form of $\mathfrak{k}$ is a multiple of the Killing form of $\mathfrak{h}$ (e.g., $K$ simple), a class which contains $17$ families and $50$ individual examples. A complete classification is obtained in the case when $H/K$ is an irreducible symmetric space with $K$ simple. We also study the behavior of the scalar curvature function on the space of all normal metrics on $M=H\times H/\Delta K$ (none of which is Einstein), obtaining that the standard metric is a global minimum.

Abstract:For negatively curved symmetric spaces it is known that the poles of the scattering matrices defined via the standard intertwining operators for the spherical principal representations of the isometry group are either given as poles of the intertwining operators or as quantum resonances, i.e. poles of the meromorphically continued resolvents of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. We extend this result to classical locally symmetric spaces of negative curvature with convex-cocompact fundamental group using results of Bunke and Olbrich. The method of proof forces us to exclude the spectral parameters corresponding to singular Poisson transforms.

Abstract:In this note we show that every (real or complex) vector bundle over a compact rank one symmetric space carries, after taking the Whitney sum with a trivial bundle of sufficiently large rank, a metric with nonnegative sectional curvature. We also examine the case of complex vector bundles over other manifolds, and give upper bounds for the rank of the trivial bundle that is necessary to add when the base is a sphere.

Abstract:We show that the metric on a full component of Stab(풞) for which the central charges factor through a finite rank quotient of the Grothendieck group K(풞) is complete. As an example, we compute the metric on the space of numerical stability conditions on a smooth complex projective curve of genus greater than 1, and show that the quotient Stab(풞)/ℂ by the natural action of the complex numbers is isometric to the upper half‐plane equipped with half the hyperbolic metric. We also make two observations about the way in which the heart changes as we move through the space of stability conditions. First, hearts of stability conditions in the same component of the space of stability conditions are related by finite sequences of tilts. Secondly, if each of a convergent sequence of stability conditions has the same heart, then the heart of the limiting stability condition is obtained from this by a right tilt.
