Abstract:Let $A$ be a $n \times n$ symmetric matrix with $(A_{i,j})_{i\leq j} $, independent and identically distributed according to a subgaussian distribution. We show that $$\mathbb{P}(\sigma_{\min}(A) \leq \varepsilon/\sqrt{n}) \leq C \varepsilon + e^{-cn},$$ where $\sigma_{\min}(A)$ denotes the least singular value of $A$ and the constants $C,c>0 $ depend only on the distribution of the entries of $A$. This result confirms a folklore conjecture on the lower-tail asymptotics of the least singular value of random symmetric matrices and is best possible up to the dependence of the constants on the distribution of $A_{i,j}$. Along the way, we prove that the probability $A$ has a repeated eigenvalue is $e^{-\Omega(n)}$, thus confirming a conjecture of Nguyen, Tao and Vu.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the behavior of the least singular value of random symmetric matrices. Specifically, the authors studied \(n\times n\) random symmetric matrices \(A\), whose elements above and on the diagonal are independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.), and these elements follow a subgaussian distribution. They focused on the tail behavior of the least singular value \(\sigma_{\min}(A)\), especially the probability when \(\sigma_{\min}(A)\leq\varepsilon n^{- 1/2}\). ### Specific Problem Description 1. **Estimation of the Lower - Tail Probability of the Least Singular Value**: - The main goal of the paper is to prove that for any \(\varepsilon\geq0\), the following inequality holds: \[ P(\sigma_{\min}(A)\leq\varepsilon n^{-1/2})\leq C\varepsilon+e^{-cn} \] where \(C\) and \(c\) are constants that only depend on the distribution of the matrix elements. - This result confirms a folklore conjecture about the lower - tail probability of the least singular value of random symmetric matrices and is optimal, except that the constant terms depend on the distribution of the matrix elements. 2. **Probability of Repeated Eigenvalues**: - As a by - product, the authors also proved that the probability that a random symmetric matrix has no repeated eigenvalues is \(1 - e^{-\Omega(n)}\), thus verifying the conjecture proposed by Nguyen, Tao and Vu. ### Main Contributions - **Theoretical Results**: - Theorem 1.1: Gives the optimal estimate of the lower - tail probability of the least singular value. - Theorem 1.2: Proves that a random symmetric matrix almost never has repeated eigenvalues. - **Technical Contributions**: - Introduces the concept of "approximate negative correlation" to handle the interactions between certain linear events. - Uses the inverse Littlewood - Offord theory and the concept of the least common multiple (LCD) to analyze the relationship between small - ball events and large - deviation events. ### Historical Background - The least singular value problem was first proposed by von Neumann, and its behavior was conjectured by Smale. - Edelman obtained exact results in the case of Gaussian distribution, and Rudelson and Vershynin generalized this result to more general subgaussian distributions. - Spielman and Teng proposed an important conjecture, and this paper solves a version of this conjecture. In conclusion, through rigorous mathematical proofs, this paper solves the problem of estimating the lower - tail probability of the least singular value of random symmetric matrices and verifies some important conjectures in the process, making important contributions to the theory of random matrices.
