Abstract:In this work, we apply the advantage distillation method to improve the performance of a practical twin-field quantum key distribution system under collective attack. Compared with the previous analysis result given by Maeda, Sasaki and Koashi [Nature Communication 10, 3140 (2019)], the maximal transmission distance obtained by our analysis method will be increased from 420 km to 470 km. By increasing the loss-independent misalignment error to 12%, the previous analysis method can not overcome the rate-distance bound. However, our analysis method can still overcome the rate-distance bound when the misalignment error is 16%. More surprisingly, we prove that twin-field quantum key distribution can generate positive secure key even if the misalignment error is close to 50%, thus our analysis method can significantly improve the performance of a practical twin-field quantum key distribution system.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily focuses on addressing a specific issue in the field of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), namely how to improve the performance of Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution (TF-QKD) systems, especially in the scenario of collective attacks. By applying Advantage Distillation (AD) technology, the authors aim to enhance the secure key rate and maximum transmission distance of the TF-QKD protocol. The key contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Improved Transmission Distance**: By adopting the advantage distillation method, this study is able to increase the maximum transmission distance from 420 kilometers to 470 kilometers, compared to the previous work published by Maeda et al. in *Nature Communications*. 2. **Overcoming the Rate-Distance Bound**: Even with an increased misalignment error that is independent of loss, such as increasing to 12%, traditional analytical methods cannot overcome the rate-distance bound. However, the method proposed in this paper can still overcome this bound. 3. **High Fault Tolerance**: Surprisingly, when the misalignment error independent of loss approaches 50%, the TF-QKD system can still generate a positive secure key. This means that the proposed analytical method significantly improves the robustness of practical TF-QKD systems. To achieve these goals, the authors employed the following techniques and methods: - **Advantage Distillation Technology**: This is a technique originally used in classical cryptography and later widely applied in different QKD protocols to improve error tolerance. By combining the advantage distillation method with previously proposed operational advantage methods, the authors improved the security analysis of TF-QKD. - **Information-Theoretic Security Analysis**: Using this analytical method, the authors evaluated the security of the TF-QKD protocol and demonstrated that even under high error rate conditions, a positive secure key can be generated. In summary, this paper significantly enhances the performance of TF-QKD systems by introducing advantage distillation technology, particularly showcasing its potential in practical applications under high error rate conditions.
